Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and thank you for supporting UWSP and Pointer Athletics! UWSP has a proud tradition of excellence in the classroom and in our athletic programs. That suc-

cess comes from a commitment to help our students excel in developing their full potential as future leaders, communi-ty members, and citizens. That success also comes from the commitment of people outside the university who provide their support to our students and student athletes. We couldn’t provide the level of excellence we have achieved without your support. Our fans and supports are an integral part of UWSP’s story of excellence.

This promises to be another highly competitive season. Last season, the Pointers won a national second place fi nish in women’s golf, eight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championships, and four WIAC tourna-ment championships. We fi nished seventh in the Division III Directors Cup standings, which marks the 12th straight season we have fi nished in the top-25 of the prestigious Directors’ Cup standings.

Our student-athletes and coaches have earned respect and admiration throughout the state and nation. We also have the most supportive fans in the state! I look forward to joining you at the games this season. Go Pointers!

Thanks again,

The College of Professional Studies, the academic home of UW-Stevens Point Athletics, is proud of the students who dedicate themselves to both their academic and athletic goals.

This past year, UW-Stevens Point placed 7th in the Director’s Cup standings, measuring the top overall Division III athletics program. Our squads also qualifi ed teams or athletes for NCAA tournament competition in 15 differ-ent sports and had six teams place in the top 10 nationally. Two student-athletes were named their sport’s respective WIAC scholar athletes and several others won academic honors from various sport organizations.

Every year, generous alumni, parents, and friends give to the Excellence in Athletics fund to help pay for the ongo-ing operation of our Athletics department and its 20 intercollegiate sports. For this, we are very grateful. For more information about making a gift to support athletic excellence, contact me at [email protected] or call 715-346-2947 or contact Assistant Director of Development for Athletics Tony Romano at [email protected] or 715-346-3406.

Welcome to another year of Pointer Sports. The athletic program and school of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics at UW-Stevens Point are designed to be an integral part

of the community while supporting the educational mission of the university.

Our faculty and coaching staff take as much pride in the academic achievements of our student-athletes as they do in their athletic accomplishments. We expect our student-athletes in all 20 sports to excel both in the classroom and on the fi eld of competition. We believe this diffi cult but gratifying combination is being satisfi ed here at UW-Stevens Point.

We hope you enjoy today’s competition, as well as all Pointer Sports, and that your enjoyment is equal to the pride we have in sponsoring these contests. Enjoy the game!

THE POINTERS celebrate a 66-60 NCAA tournament win at Washington University in 2002 that snapped the then four-time defending national champion’s 70-game home win streak.

One of four schools to win two NCAA Division III women’s basketball champion-ships, UW-Stevens Point boasts an outstanding tradition with national titles in 1986-87 and in 2001-02.

The success has been at its peak in recent seasons where the Pointers have posted eight straight 20-win campaigns while making trips to the final four two of the past seven seasons.

Over the last eight seasons, the Pointers have posted a 191-42 overall record. They have been incredibly tough against non-conference competition with a 84-9 record over their last 91 games with two of the losses coming in the 2003-04 final four when the Pointers placed fourth in the country after winning the WIAC regular sea-son and tournament titles.

In fact, UW-Stevens Point’s 16-5 all-time NCAA tournament record is the best of any school that has played at least 10 postseason games.

In 1987, the Pointers won the WWIAC title and finished 27-2 overall under coach Linda Wunder en route to their first national title. They beat Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) 81-74 in the championship game in Scranton, Pa. and also played three home games before reaching the final four. Donna Pivonka and Karla Miller were both named to the all-tournament team.

The Pointers finished runner-up in the WIAC regular season and post-season tournament in 2002, but still earned an at-large bid to the nation-al tournament and took full advantage.

They defeated St. Lawrence (N.Y.) 67-65 in the finals in Terre Haute, Ind. to finish the season 30-3. Along the way, the Pointers ousted four-time defending champion Washington (Mo.), snapping the Bears’ 70-game home court winning streak. UW-Stevens Point also played three home games among the six postseason contests and packed Berg Gym with nearly 1,800 fans for the sectional tournament. Carry Boehning was the tournament MVP and Tara Schmitt also earned all-tournament acco-lades.

In 2004-05, the Pointers featured the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division III National Player of the Year in Amanda Nechuta, who led the WIAC in scoring three straight seasons and earned the opportunity to play in the WBCA all-star game against the nation’s top Division I players at the 2005 Women’s Final Four.

In 2003, Groshek was presented the NCAA Today’s Top VIII Award, which is presented to the top eight student-athletes from all NCAA divisions and all NCAA sponsored sports over a calendar year. Groshek (above) was the second straight UW-Stevens Point student-athlete to receive the award as former track and field and cross country standout Leah Juno was selected in 2002. They were the first two athletes from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference earn the award in its 32-year history.

Groshek, a Rosholt native, led the wom-en’s basketball team to the 2002 national championship, while posting a 3.74 grade point average in Biology.

In 2005, senior Amanda Nechuta became the first UW-Stevens Point player to be named NCAA Division III National Player of the year.

She was presented with the award in April of 2005 at the WBCA Awards Luncheon at the Indiana Convention Center during the 2005 Division I Women’s Final Four. She is only one of two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players to be selected for the award in its 25-year history.

During her senior season, Nechuta averaged 16.8 points per game and led the Pointers to their second straight WIAC championship. During her four-year career, the Pointers had a 101-19 record, including the 2002 national championship and a fourth place finish at the 2004 final four.

Nechuta was a two-time Kodak All-American First Team member and was the first two-time winner of the WIAC Player of the Year award and set UW-Stevens Point's all-time scoring record with 1,801 points from 2001-05. The point total ranks third in WIAC history and Nechuta also holds the school record with 681 field goals made. She led the WIAC in scoring her sopho-more, junior, and senior seasons. Nechuta ranked fourth in school history in career rebounds and was a three-time member of the WIAC’s All-Defensive Team. Nechuta also was a three-time All-American in the shot put.

Schmitt was honored in the fall of 2005 as the NCAA Woman of the Year finalist for the state of Wisconsin. She was also select-ed as the winner of the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to one male and one female stu-dent-athlete in each NCAA division across all sports. Both awards honor outstanding student-athletes who have excelled in aca-demics, athletics and community leader-ship.

Schmitt, a Brookfield native, was also a key member of the 2002 national champi-onship team and led the Pointers back to the final four in 2004. She was a four-time all-conference selection in women’s soccer and the WIAC Player of the Year in 2004. Schmitt also competed one season in track and field and anchored the conference out-door champion 400-meter relay.

Schmitt posted a 3.85 grade point aver-age and was very active in community organizations, while serving two years as president of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

As the field of sports medicine has grown, so

has the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s ath-letic training program. The UW-Stevens Point athletic training program has long prided itself in providing superior athletic health care to the student-athletes and high

caliber instruction to student athletic trainers. As the program steps into the new millennium, the athletic training program is now a full-fleged major in the School of Health, Exercise Science, and Athletics. UW-Stevens Point is the first UW-System school to be granted the athletic training major. The athletic training program is overseen by Holly Schmies, Director of Athletic Training Education, Nathan Weiler, Head Athletic Trainer, and Assistant Athletic Trainers Rhonda Verdegan, Michael Koroch, Dawn Wedeking and Beth Kinslow. Schmies, a native of Mishicot, Wis., earned a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science with an emphasis in athletic training from UW-La Crosse in 1996. She obtained a M.S. in Educational Administration from UW-Madison, and most recently, worked at Penn State University before joining the UW-Stevens Point staff in 2000. Weiler is in his sixth year as a member of the UW-Stevens Point staff and his fifth year as the head athletic trainer, having completed a Master’s Degree at UW-Madison. An Auburndale, Wis. native, Weiler graduated from UW-Stevens Point in 2001. Verdegan, an Edgar, Wis. native, is a UW-Stevens Point graduate and in her fifth year as a full-time staff member. She earned her Master’s Degree at Illinois State University and also worked at St. Ambrose University and Coe College. Koroch, an Appleton, Wis. Native, earned a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2005 and a Master’s of Arts Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia. Wedeking, a Clarksville, Iowa native, earned a Bachelor’s Degree at Iowa State University in 2005 and a Masters of Education Degree at the University of Nebraska. Kinslow, a native of Fall River, Wisconsin, returns to Stevens Point after completing her undergraduate degree at UWSP in 2002. She earned her Masters in Sports & Exercise Psychology from Oregon State University in 2006. The team physicians provide an invaluable service to Pointer athletics and the athletic training program. With weekly visitations to the athletic training room, on-call times, and game coverage through the year, the team physicians offer an exceptional level of care. Dr. James Banovetz is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist. Kari Zdroik is a physician’s assistant in sports medicine.

The team physician services, provided by Aspirus and Klasinski Clinic, are an invaluable component of Pointer athletics and the ath-letic training education program. Dr. James Banovetz, MD PhD, a board certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, offers exceptional care with weekly visits to the athletic training facili-ty, on-call services, and game coverage throughout the year. The Pointers also have the help of certified physician assistants Kari (Groshek) Zdroik PA-C, a former NCAA All-American and member of the NCAA Champion women’s basketball team, and Jim Lepak PA-C .

The mission of the UW-Stevens Point Athletic Training Education Program is to provide students with a unique and comprehensive education and clinical foundation as it relates to the profession of athletic training. The program involves didactic and clinical educa-tional opportunities in collegiate, high school, and sports medicine clinic environment.
