2009-10 Women’s Basketball Roster

Page 10: 2009-10 University of Mobile Women's Basketball Media Guide

The University of Mobile women's basketballteam will look to bounce back in 2009-10 afterputting up a losing record in Gulf CoastAthletic Conference play for the first timesince 1993-94.

The Lady Rams finished 2008-09 14-18 overalland 6-12 in GCAC action. In 1993-94, theteam went 15-16 overall and 5-11 in GCACplay.

"The University of Mobile women's basketballteam has a proud history and we expect toturn things around quickly," Head CoachMichael Berry said.

Mobile does not have a lot of experiencereturning, with only two starters returning, andfive players that saw action in 2008-09 return-ing. Gerica Johnson, a 5-8 guard fromTheodore, Ala., and Kyiona Boulton, a 5-8forward from Pascagoula, Miss., are the return-ing starters. Walker, La. native MorganMelancon averaged 23 minutes per contest andwill need to step up and replace 2008-09NAIA All-American Danielle Goodly at thepoint guard spot.

"We do not have a ton of experience comingback, so the few we do have need to step up ina big way," Berry said. "If Gerica picks upwhere she left off last year, she can be an All-American, and Kyiona can give us some toughdefense and rebounding if she makes stridesfrom her freshman to sophomore year."

"Everyone knows the point guard spot is cru-cial in basketball, and Morgan needs to fill thatspot for us," Berry said. "She showed flasheslast season, but was inconsistent and does nothave an All-American to turn to like she didlast year. She will have to step up and be aleader."

The trio combined for 905 of the team's 2,227points last season. Joining the trio are MandyEads and Bianca Phillips, who saw action in acombined 23 games in 2008-09. Eads is a 5-11forward who was limited to 10 games due toinjury, while Phillips is a 5-10 forward.

"Mandy showed she can contribute some valu-able minutes in the post, but we just need herto stay healthy," Berry said. "Hopefully, after

playing as a freshman, Bianca can make stridesand help us out in the paint."

Six newcomers will join the five returning play-ers to round out the 2009-10 squad. In thatgroup are three guards and three post players. The newcomers are Alyssa Lane (5-8, G,Houston, TX), Morgan Crawford (5-6, G,Theodore, AL), Davina Jefferson (5-7, G,Miami, FL), Adrienne Mackay (5-10, F, Laurel,MS), Trenell Spears (5-9, F, New Orleans, LA)and Alice Honnery (6-2, P, New South Wales,Australia).

"I think Alice and Adrienne have what it takesto be legit starters in this league," Berry said."At 6-2, Alice offers a nice mismatch in thepost, while Adrienne has experience comingfrom Mississippi Gulf Coast CommunityCollege and is a tenacious rebounder."

"The other six newcomers will be looked tofor valuable minutes, and we need them toimprove throughout the early part of the sea-son so they are ready to contribute in a bigway when conference play starts on January7th," Berry said.

The Lady Rams will have 11 non-conferencegames to prepare for GCAC play. They openthe year Oct. 30-31 when they host the PortCity Tip-Off Classic. Martin Methodist, Xavier

and Talladega will come to town for the tour-nament. Among the 11 non-conference gamesare five games against NCAA affiliates:University of Southern Mississippi (Nov. 5,Away, 7 pm), Alabama State University (Nov.13, Away, 6 pm), University of West Florida(Nov. 16, Away, 5 pm), University ofArkansas-Monticello (Nov. 20, Away, 7:30 pm)and Southern Arkansas University (Nov. 21,Away, 12 pm).

"We will have some tough tests in non-confer-ence play, and that is good," Berry said."Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Miss areNCAA programs that combined for 41 winslast year, and we have our normal home-awayseries with an Auburn-Montgomery team thatwon 20 ball games last season. Hopefully thetough slate will prepare us for conferenceplay."

Thanksgiving week will take the Lady Rams toSpring Hill College for the SHC ThanksgivingClassic. Mobile will face Aquinas College andDavenport College, which went a combined50-14 last season. Four of the 11 non-confer-ence games will take place at Pharr Gym.

After the Lady Rams make their way throughthe tough non-conference play, they will openGCAC action Jan.7 at home against LoyolaUniversity. Loyola went 16-2 in conferenceaction last year and won the Regular SeasonConference Championship. Loyola, LSUS andXavier went a combined 44-10 in GCAC playlast year and held down the top three spots inthe league. William Carey finished 10-8, whilethe rest of the league finished below .500 inconference play.

"It was a bit of a strange year in our league, with six teams finishing below .500, but Iexpect teams to improve and the league to bea bit more competitive," Berry said."Obviously Loyola, LSUS and Xavier are thecream of the crop, but any team in the confer-ence can beat you any give night, you have toshow up."

Spring Hill College will visit Mobile Jan. 30 at5 pm, while the Lady Rams will visit SpringHill to close out the regular season on Feb. 27at 5 pm.

Gerica Johnson was a 2008-09 All-GCACselection in her first season at Mobile.

The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference developed out of a series ofmeetings held over a period of almost four years. A number of pri-vate four-year schools in the Gulf Coast region with similar educa-tional standards, enrollments, budgets, and athletic philosophies mutu-ally felt the need for a conference.

In April and May, 1981, a constitution was developed, officerswere elected and the decision was made to proceed with conferencecompetition during the 1981-82 school year. Charter officers wereAnthony M. Rachal, Jr., Xavier University, president; John Burton,Spring Hill College, vice president; Mark Windham, Belhaven College,secretary-treasurer; and Thomas Howell, Louisiana College, commis-sioner. Charter members were Belhaven College of Jackson,Mississippi; Dillard University and Xavier University of New Orleans,Louisiana; Louisiana College of Pineville, Louisiana; Spring HillCollege of Mobile, Alabama; Tougaloo College of Tougaloo,Mississippi; and William Carey College of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

In August, 1981, the GCAC received recognition as an NAIA-affiliated conference. The University of Mobile was admitted inOctober, 1985; Southern University in New Orleans was grantedadmission in May, 1986; Loyola University was admitted in April,1995; and Talladega College was admitted in April, 1999. In May2000, Louisiana College and Belhaven College withdrew whileLouisiana State University - Shreveport became a member in August,2000. Belhaven College rejoined the GCAC in 2002.

The purpose of the conference is to regulate and promote all rec-ognized activities of intercollegiate athletics sponsored by memberinstitutions through the maintenance of high standards of honor, integrity, and fair play. All member institutions agree to pursue thehighest standards of ethical conduct and personal integrity in allaspects of intercollegiate athletics.

The 2008-09 season saw theUniversity of Mobile women's bas-ketball team start with four straightvictories, before fading down thestretch to suffer the team's first los-ing season since 2000-01.The LadyRams finished 14-18 with a 6-12mark in Gulf Coast AthleticConference action.

"We started the year with wins overthree very good teams in AUM,Berry and Shorter and had very highexpectations," Mobile Head CoachMichael Berry said. "But, then afterplaying okay ball the rest of non-con-ference play, we really struggled inconference and had a disappointingseason."

After the 4-0 start, the Lady Ramsplayed their next six contests againstNCAA affiliates and went 2-4 inthose match ups, beating AlabamaState and West Alabama, but fallingto West Florida and Montevallo bysingle-digits.

The team then split a pair of gamesagainst SSAC foes AuburnMontgomery and Berry Collegebefore heading into conference play.

"Going into the year, I knew that six-game stretch against the NCAAteams would be rough, but we were10 points away from going 4-2instead of 2-4, and that could'vegiven us a lot of momentum headinginto conference play," Berry said.

The Lady Rams had gone a com-bined 50-19 in conference play since2005, but struggled to 6-12 despitebeating SUNO and Dillard to startthe GCAC schedule. Mobile wonthose games by a combined 30points, but then lost the next three tostart the downward spiral.

"After cruising in our first twogames, we lost to Belhaven andWilliam Carey by a combined sixpoints and I think that hurt our con-fidence," Berry said. "Then, two ofour next three were against two ofthe best teams in Loyola and Xavier, and that put us in a hole that wecouldn't climb out of."

A seven-game skid from Feb. 7 toFeb. 26 highlighted the season's dis-appointment, but at least the LadyRams took care of business againstrival Spring Hill, beating the LadyBadgers 87-83 in overtime and 82-74.

Despite the lack of team success, theLady Rams did have some individualaccomplishments. Senior point guardDanielle Goodly left her mark on theschool, becoming the school's all-time steal's leader with 291, 3rd all-time in assists with 328 and the 5thall-time leading scorer with 1,386points. Sherri McIntosh finished up

her Mobile career as the 9th all-timeleading scorer with 940 points and4th all-time leading rebounder with695.

Goodly was named HonorableMention NAIA All-American, andjoined newcomer Gerica Johnson as a2009 All-GCAC selection. Johnsonled the Lady Rams with 18.3 pointsper game, racked up 212 reboundsand led with 104 steals. Goodly aver-aged 17.5 points per game, led theteam with 105 assists and finishedwith 79 steals.

"It's always nice to have playersawarded for their performances,"Berry said. "Our seniors, Sherri,Danielle and Johnitia Williams all lefta lasting impression on our programand will be missed next season."

Sherri McIntosh became the 9th all-time lead-ing scorer at UM in 2008-09.

Danielle Goodly was a 2008-09 NAIAHonorable Mention All-American selection.
