TenaKrause

Following her 20th season at the helm of the Taylor University Lady Trojans, the milestone season was not the first taste of success for head coach Tena Krause. She has logged more victories than any women’s basketball coach in Taylor’s history with a 389-267 record. She has coached 9 NAIA All-Americans, 3 conference players of the year, 7 NAIA All-District players, 25 All-Conference players, and 2 NCCAA All-Americans. She has led her squad to five NAIA national tournaments and two conference championships. But for Krause, the game has been about more than the accolades. “It has been my goal since I came to Upland that our teams use the talents and abilities God gave us to glorify Him through our efforts both on and off the court,” Krause said. Coaching for Krause is more of a platform to teach a variety of life lessons. “I love this sport because it has chal-lenged me in more areas of my life than anything else in which I have competed. My hope and desire is that our play-

When Krause took over the Lady Trojan basketball squad for the 1989-90 season, she inherited a program with just six winning seasons in its 20-year history. In just her second season on the Taylor bench, Krause’s team posted the most wins in the program’s history with a 23-11 record. The season ended with a Hoosier Conference for Women championship and Krause capturing the HCW Coach of the Year award. The Lady Trojans went on to break that win record two more times including a 24-9 record in 1995-96 and a 28-8 mark in 1996-97. The 1995-96 group won the program’s first Mid-Central College Conference championship, and Krause was named MCC Coach of the Year. The 1996-97 team currently holds the record for the best winning percentage

of any team in the program’s history (28-8, .778) and the first NAIA Division II national ranking for the program. They reached as high as 11th in the polls. Krause and the Lady Trojans made their first trip to the NAIA National Tournament in 1996-97 and repeated the following year when they won the MCC championship and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. The 2000-01 edition of the Lady Trojans climbed to eighth in the NAIA national polls and finished second in the MCC. A win over the top-rated St. Francis Cougars on the road highlighted the 24-8 season. Four seasons ago Taylor posted a 23-10 record and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the third time during Krause’s tenure. Just a year later, Krause surpassed the 300-win plateau. The 2006-07 Lady Trojans may have been the most decorated unit in the program’s history. The team notched a 23-12 record concluding with a NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight appearance and a #22 ranking in the final NAIA national poll. Paced by four seniors and five juniors, the Lady Trojans made quick work of Huntington University in the first round of the conference tournament which set up a third meeting with undefeated and top-ranked cross-county rival Indiana Wesleyan. TU led the Wildcats at halftime and held them to their lowest offensive output of the season with just 46 points. However, Taylor scored just 41 points, and the loss forced the Lady Trojans into a waiting game before they received notification of their at-large selection to the national tournament. Prior to arriving at Taylor, Krause spent one year as an assistant softball coach at Eastern Illinois University and three seasons at Altamont (IL) High School as the head coach for basketball, volleyball, and softball. Her 1980-81 basketball team at Altamont advanced to the Illinois State

Tournament Elite Eight, and her volleyball squad made it to the “Sweet Sixteen” in 1981. A native of Shipman, Illinois, Krause earned her B. S. degree in physical education from Greenville College in 1980. At Greenville, Krause starred in basketball, softball, and tennis. She was named to the All-State team in basketball, the NAIA Player of the Week in basketball, and was also

the team MVP in tennis. Krause was honored by her alma mater in the spring of 1996, as she was inducted into the Greenville College Athletic Hall of Fame for her accomplish-ments at Greenville and at Taylor. In 1998, Krause was awarded another accolade as she was inducted into Greenville’s Hall of Fame as a member of the 1980 Greenville women’s basketball team. Krause earned a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development in physical education at Eastern Illinois University in 1988. In the summer of 1996, Krause earned her M.A. in Health Science/Physiology from Ball State University. Krause served as head coach of the Taylor women’s tennis team from 1989-1993. During that time, the Lady Trojans won or tied for the NAIA District title four times, and her 1992 team finished 21st in the nation. A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the American Health Association (AHA), and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), Krause resides in nearby Muncie, Indiana. In addition to her coaching duties, Krause is an associ-ate professor in the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance at Taylor.

When Tena Krause arrived in Upland in 1989, she inherited a team that had produced only one winning season in the previous six years and had never won 20 games in a season. Sixteen seasons later Krause reached her milestone 300th victory as head coach of the Lady Trojans and has compiled a career total of 389 wins heading into the 2009-10 season. In 1996-97, her squad was an at-large selection to the NAIA Division II National Tournament, the first team in Taylor women’s basketball history to do so. The following season the Lady Trojans won the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 at the National Tournament. Krause’s accomplishments at Taylor: • Most wins: 389 • An average of over 19 wins per season with 12 seasons of at least 20 wins • A 28-8 record in 1996-97--the most wins and the best winning percentage in program history (.778) • Five trips to the NAIA Division II National Tournament • NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight in 2007 • NAIA National Tournament Sweet Sixteen in 1997 • MCC Regular Season Champions in 1996 • MCC Tournament Champions in 1998 • MCC Coach of the Year in 1998 • MCC Coach of the Year in 1996 • HCW Coach of the Year in 1991 • 2001 WBCA District 5 Coach of the Year

What former players say about Coach Tena Krause

“Playing for Coach Krause was such a blessing! Being an alum, I truly realize what an amazing woman of God that she is. The skills Coach Krause taught me about basketball brought great achievements and some memorable wins, but the life lessons she taught and the Christian values she modeled continue to affect my life on a daily basis. I am thankful every day for the opportunity I had to play for her as she coached for Christ.”Jenny (Dawes) TynerTaylor University (2003-2007)

‘‘I came to Taylor for the bas-ketball program, to build on my abil-ity. But somewhere in the process of achieving that, I found myself develop-ing so much more under the leader-ship of Coach Tena Krause. She taught me the skills and fun-damentals of basketball, but the great-est thing was the personal character traits she cultivated along the way. Traits I would carry with me throughout the remainder of my life: commitment, respect, honesty, and relationships. I have learned more than basketball; I have learned skills I need to move for-ward in life as a better person. I would not trade that experience for anything and thank God for having allowed the door to open to Taylor University and Coach Krause’s basketball program.’’Lydia HarrisTaylor University (2001-2005)

“During my four years at Taylor, Coach Krause not only helped me to develop as a player and a person, but in my spiritual walk as well. Her knowl-edge, dedication, and care for the team are what have made us success-ful on the floor and in life. I am thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of the TU Women’s Basketball fam-ily.”Katie MaddenTaylor University (2004-2008)

Denise Johnson is head assistant for the Lady Trojans. Coach Johnson is also part of the faculty and teaches in the departments of Physical Education Human Performance and Psychology. She enters her 15th season of working with the Lady Trojans where her responsibilities include recruit-ing, scouting, and many behind-the-scenes duties. As head recruiter, Johnson has built relationships with coaches, prospective recruits, parents, and teachers across the Midwest. These relationships have been the core of her success, having produced athletes that have led TU to the NAIA National Tournament three of the past five seasons. A 1984 graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Johnson received her MS in Educational Psychology and Counseling from Eastern Illinois University in 1989. In 2007 Coach Johnson received her Master’s Degree in physical education at Ball State University.

A 2008 graduate of Taylor University, Kristen Ludwig joins the Lady Trojan bench for her first season of coaching. While at Taylor, Ludwig earned a degree in Social Studies education. During her four years at TU, the Lady Trojans posted an 81-50 record and twice earned a trip to the NAIA National Tournament, reaching the Elite Eight in 2007. Ludwig was named as both an NAIA and a Mid-Central College Conference Scholar-Athlete. A native of Naperville, Ill., Ludwig’s responsibili-ties with the Lady Trojans include assisting in scouting and recruiting. age for a career. Sophomore Morgan McLeish is the only pure guard that returns from last year’s roster, but even she averaged just under nine minutes per game as a fresh-man. Alissa Goeglein returned from off-season surgery that kept her out of action for most of last season, but the sophomore suffered a career-ending injury during pre-season practice. Thanks to an outstanding recruiting class, a group of six new guards dot the Taylor roster. Becca Morris, a junior transfer from Bryan (Tenn.) College, joins Courtney Turner as the Lady Trojans’ only two upperclassmen in the backcourt. The lack of experience on the roster could spell trouble early for Taylor, but with time this group’s talent is expected to take over as they learn what it takes to compete against a demanding MCC schedule. The unity, cohesiveness, and work ethic that Krause has observed in the preseason could go a long way toward the long-term success of this version of the Taylor wom-en’s basketball team.

SENIORS

Bethany Ballard (5-11, Center/Forward, Warren Central High School) is the only senior on the roster for Taylor this sea-son and one of two team captains. Her 2008-09 season totals of 13.3 points and 6.6 rebounds earned Ballard a Second Team All-Conference selection as a junior. Ballard is no longer a secret in the MCC, and she can very likely expect double teams throughout much of the season. She has the basketball IQ necessary to know how to find her teammates when that hap-pens. Her leadership both on and off the court will be instrumental to the develop-ment of this team.

JUNIORS

Allison Reece (6-0, Center/Forward, New Castle High School) joins Ballard as the other team captain for the Lady Trojans this season. After posting per game totals of 8 points and 5.8 rebounds a season ago, Reece will be called upon to detract attention away from Ballard in the post. Her ability to get to the free throw line will be a key again this season. She finished the 2008-09 campaign with a team best 83.7% (72 for 86) at the line.

Courtney Turner (5-9, Guard/Forward, Heritage Christian High School) has bat-tled injuries throughout much of her career,

The youth of the 2009-10 Taylor University women’s basketball team will be forced into action early and often for Lady Trojans head coach Tena Krause. With just three upperclassmen returning from last year’s NAIA National Tournament qualifier, Taylor will look to a talented group of six newcomers and three sopho-mores to bolster a lineup centered around senior forward Bethany Ballard. Ballard, the lone senior on the team, has proven for the last three years to be a force in the competitive Mid-Central College Conference. The Indianapolis native was a second team All-MCC pick a year ago after finishing her junior season with career totals of 921 points and 464 rebounds. Her presence as a floor leader and team captain will play a pivotal role in the development of Taylor’s younger play-ers.

The strength of Taylor is expected to be its play in the post. Junior Allison Reece and sophomore Nellie Eskew return to join Ballard in forming one of the best low-post units in the conference. The trio combined for over 27 points and 15 rebounds a contest last season, with that production expected to increase this season. Due mainly to the experience of this group, Taylor once again received national recognition to begin the 2009-10 season as the 23rd-ranked team in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Top 25 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. There is no ignoring the fact that the loss of senior guards Paige Rudolph and Nikki Kassebaum from last year’s squad leaves a big hole for Krause to fill in the perimeter game. Rudolph was a two-time All-American and sixth on Taylor’s all-time scoring list, while Kassebaum graduated with the program’s top three-point percent-

and that trend continued during preseason camp for the Lady Trojans. Once fully healthy, Turner can be expected to add depth and experience to a young Taylor roster. Her ability to rebound the basket-ball from the guard or forward position is a strength this team will need against a physical set of opponents.

Becca Morris (5-7, Guard, University School of Jackson) is a transfer from Bryan College in Tennessee that comes to Taylor as a great threat from beyond the 3-point line. Although her shooting can be streaky at times, when she is on, she becomes the Lady Trojans’ top deep threat. Added to her game this offseason was the ability to penetrate the defense. Her deceiving quickness and ability to knock down free throws will give opposing defenses another weapon to defend.

SOPHOMORES

Nellie Eskew (6-2, Center, Anderson High School) began last season as somewhat of a project in the post, but she developed into a much more complete player as the season progressed. Krause will continue to look for that improvement as Eskew pro-vides a great complement to the 1-2 punch of Ballard and Reece in the post. After battling back from offseason surgery, it may take some time before the sophomore returns to last season’s form.

Morgan McLeish (5-6, Guard, Ryle High School) will be asked to fill a much larger role this season following the graduation of Rudolph and Kassebaum. Her quick-ness is unmatched in the MCC, but she lacks experience at the point guard posi-tion where she will be expected to run the show for the Taylor offense. An improved outside game will help with her transition to being the primary ball handler for the Lady Trojans this season.

Kaycee Sullivan (5-10, Forward, Rushville High School) spent most of her fresh-man season battling through injuries, but showed glimpses of her outstanding poten-tial when she scored six points on 3 of 3

shooting in the closing minutes of Taylor’s national tournament game to close out last season. Finally injury free, Sullivan provides the Lady Trojans with a physi-cal presence in the post and a consistent shooting touch from inside and outside the paint.

FRESHMEN

Libby Bird (6-0, Guard, Southwest Christian High School) shows plenty of untapped potential as the tallest guard on Taylor’s roster. Her enthusiasm and willing-

ness to work at developing her raw talent gives Krause confidence in Bird’s ability to contribute this season. Throughout much of her high school career, Bird played in the low post, but she emerged as a star at the guard position in her final prep season. That trend is expected to continue as she learns how to play at the college level.

Erin Guarneri (5-10, Freshman, Marion High School) becomes the third player from Grant County to play under Krause in the last 20 years. A four-year stand-out for Marion High School, Guarneri led the Giants with more than 16 points and 9 rebounds per game last season. Her experience in the highly competitive North Central Conference is expected to pay divi-dends in her adjustment to the speed and physicality of the college game.

Hillary Guion (5-7, Freshman, Lapel High School) was extremely impressive in pre-season camp for the Lady Trojans, but early season surgery will likely keep her out of the lineup for at least a third of the season. When she returns, Guion will bring a “no-fear” mentality to the point guard position with the strong ability to find her open teammates.

Erika Redweik (5-7 Freshman, Winamac High School) led Taylor in the scoring column in both preseason scrimmages to give coach Krause a glimpse of what this scrappy youngster has to offer. Redweik, who can play both inside and out, just finds ways to get it done on both ends of the court. Her ability to rebound from the guard position coupled with her offensive acumen makes Redweik a prime candi-date to see plenty of playing time early in her career.

Tess Rudolph (5-7, Freshman, Evansville Memorial High School) adds another out-side threat to the team that can consis-tently knock down open three-pointers. The younger sister of former Lady Trojan and two-time All-American Paige Rudolph, Tess brings with her knowledge of what it takes to compete in the MCC. An extreme-ly hard worker, the Evansville native is expected to compete for early minutes at the guard position.

THE SCHEDULE

Each season the Taylor women’s bas-ketball team faces one of the toughest schedules in the Midwest. This year is no different as the slate features five games

against 2009 NAIA National Tournament qualifiers, four of which advanced to the Sweet 16. After opening the season with five straight road games, the Lady Trojans will debut in Odle Arena on November 24 when they play host to conference foe Saint Francis. The following week Taylor will travel to Huntington on Dec. 2 before Spring Arbor comes to town on the 5th. Sandwiching the first-semester con-ference action is a trip to Cornerstone (Mich.) on Nov. 14 and a visit from Aquinas (Mich.) on December 9. Cornerstone fin-ished No. 7 in last season’s final top 25 poll and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the national tournament. Aquinas finished receiving votes in the final 2008-09 poll and topped out at No. 14 early in the sea-son. They also appeared in the national tournament. Just prior to tipping off the bulk of conference action in January, Taylor will once again host the Taylor Holiday Classic on December 30-31, which will feature 2009 national tournament qualifier, IU-Southeast, and Indiana Tech. The final weeks of January will be nothing short of challenging as the Lady Trojans will take on each of last season’s top three conference finishers in less than two weeks. The stretch will feature back-to-back games against 2009 regu-lar season conference champion, Bethel, and Indiana Wesleyan, who finished last season ranked No. 16 and No. 19, respec-tively. Huntington finished last season ranked No. 13 after winning the confer-ence tournament and will travel to Taylor on January 27 to wrap up the grueling week-and-a-half block. The Lady Trojans will open the season on November 7 at Wilberforce College.

Taylor University’s athletic department maintains high academic and graduation goals for over 300 student-ath-letes involved in its intercollegiate athletic program.

To help achieve these goals, Taylor created the Student-Athlete Academic Support Program in 1998. Student achievement and performance has continued to improve ever since. After the spring 2008 semester, the cumu-lative grade point average for all student-athletes was 3.16. There were also 56 student-athletes who earned a spot on the Dean’s List during the spring semester with a 3.60 minimum grade point average.

Ten of Taylor’s fifteen intercollegiate athletic teams were recognized by the NAIA as scholar teams for the 2007-2008 academic year. To be named a scholar team, the team’s average GPA must be 3.0 or above.

Taylor student-athletes commit countless hours to practices, competitions, and training. The Student-Athlete Academic Support Program seeks to assist student-athletes in the effort to balance those hours with their aca-demic demands. All incoming freshmen and transfer student-athletes attend seminars during the fall semester that discuss topics such as time and stress management, study skills, learning styles, test taking, and campus resources. The program also offers a monitored study table, tutor possibilities, and academic advising. Upon the request of their respective coaches, returning student-athletes also become involved in the program.

Robin Lockridge enters her second year as the director of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Program. She oversees all details of the program and works in conjunction with the Academic Enrichment Center to connect student-athletes with the tutoring program and the writing center. In addition, she is also the staff mentor of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council which is comprised of one student-athlete from each varsity team. Their goal is to be a voice for student-athletes and to unify Taylor athletic teams while maintaining the Taylor University vision of reflecting Christ through their words and actions. The council also seeks out service opportunities for Taylor athletic teams to become involved in the community.

The 2008-09 Lady Trojans began the season ranked No. 16 in the pre-season polls and appeared in 10 of the 12 NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 polls be-fore finishing the season ranked 25th and earning their second trip to the national tournament in three seasons.

Taylor surged out of the gates winning its first four games including two wins over NAIA Division I opponents, the University of Illinois-Springfield and Missouri Baptist University.

However, the early success was soon humbled when the Trojans lost to NAIA Div. I member St. Francis (IL) in the first of five straight losses. The season’s longest skid included four games against top 25 schools and the first conference game of the season.

With a 4-5 record, the Trojans did not waver, winning 10 of their next 11 contests including a season-long seven-game streak. League wins over No. 6 Huntington and No. 10 Bethel highlighted the seven-week span and propelled them to a season-best No. 12 national ranking.

No. 21 Indiana Wesleyan halted the hot Trojans with a six-point win but not before Taylor was able to mount a 14-6 record and a 5-2 conference mark.

From that point on, the Trojans lost just three more regular season games entering the postseason with a 19-10

record. A 10-6 league record was good for fourth in the competitive Mid-Cen-tral College Conference and set up a first round home game in the confer-ence tournament.

Avenging its early-season loss to Saint Francis with a convincing 18-point win, Taylor advanced to the semifinals for a rematch on the road with top-seeded Bethel. The two teams split regular season meetings with the Pilots win-ning the finale 78-68.

The Lady Trojans picked up the win when it mattered most, as Third Team All-American Paige Rudolph’s 27 points on 10-for-11 shooting lifted Taylor past the MCC regular season champion Pilots by the final score of 66-54. The 12-point win advanced the Lady Trojans to the MCC tournament championship game.

In the title game, Taylor was matched with Huntington, who like Bethel, split the season series and won the last meeting. The Trojans received double-digit scoring contributions from three different players, but the Forest-ers held Rudolph to just four points on their way to defeating the Trojans 65-60 and earning the automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.

The loss left the 25th-ranked Trojans playing the waiting game to learn of their postseason fate. Two days later the NAIA announced that Taylor received an at-large bid in the 32-team

national tournament, their third ap-pearance in five years.

Paired with No. 10 Concordia (Neb.), the Trojans were poised for their fifth national tournament appearance in school history. The Trojans went up 29-25 at halftime, but they were un-able to hang on as the third-seeded Bulldogs overwhelmed Taylor in the second half for a 68-51 win. Adding to Rudolph’s All-American honor and her First Team All-MCC selection was junior Bethany Ballard’s Second Team All-Conference selec-tion. Throughout the season, Ballard was honored twice as the MCC Player of the Week, while Rudolph earned the distinction on one occasion. Rudolph was also named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

Senior Nikki Kassebaum capped her three-year Taylor career as the school’s all-time leader in career three-point percentage with a mark of 38.7%. Rudolph broke another school record as the career leader in free throw percentage at 82.9% in her four seasons. With 1,558 career points, Rudolph is sixth on Taylor’s career scoring charts.

For the first time in three seasons, Taylor finished outside the top spot in the national free throw percentage rankings. The Trojans were third in the NAIA with a 77.3% efficiency rate from the line.

2009-10 LADY TROJAN BASKETBALL

The Mid-Central College Conference, which enters its 51st sea-son in 2009-10, is one of the oldest conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Founded in 1959, the conference currently consists of nine colleges and universities located in Indiana and Michigan. MCC member institutions are Bethel College (Mishawaka, Ind.); Goshen College (Goshen, Ind.); Grace College (Winona Lake, Ind.); Huntington University (Huntington, Ind.); Indiana Wesleyan University (Marion, Ind.); Marian University (Indianapolis, Ind.); University of Saint Francis (Fort Wayne, Ind.); Taylor University (Upland, Ind.); and its newest mem-ber, Spring Arbor University (Spring Arbor, MI). The purpose of the Mid-Central College Conference is to promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program, maintain high ideals, and to promote

sportsmanship. The league sponsors championships in the following men’s sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, ten-

nis, and track and field. The MCC also sponsors cham-pionships in the following women’s sports: basketball, cross country, soccer, soft-ball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Last year, 64 Mid-Central College Conference athletes were named NAIA All-Americans. Also, 202 MCC student-athletes were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes. MCC teams are frequently found in the NAIA National Polls in all sports. In addition to honoring outstanding achievement on the playing fields in all 14 sports, the conference also recognizes achievement in the classroom. Each year an Academic All-Mid-Central Conference Team is select-ed. Last year, over 250 ath-letes representing each of the nine member institutions were so honored. On June 1, 2008, J.D. Collins, a former Indiana business CEO and veteran NCAA college basketball referee, was named the first commissioner of the MCC. Collins is responsible for administering all aspects of the men’s and women’s ath-letic programs for the con-ference and will promote the MCC as an integral part of the NAIA.

2009-10 LADY TROJAN BASKETBALL

Now in her 18th year at Taylor, former Trojan head women’s volleyball coach Dr. Angie Fincannon enters her second year directing Taylor’s intercollegiate athletic depart-ment as the dean of human performance and athletics. “As dean for human performance and athletics, I’m confident that Dr. Fincannon’s leadership will advance and strengthen Taylor’s athletic program,” said Dr. Ste-phen Bedi, Taylor’s provost. “She is recognized and re-spected by her peers as a colleague and winning coach who took the women’s volleyball program to a national level of prominence.” Administrative duties for Fincannon include over-seeing the entire operation of the Trojans’ 15-sport in-tercollegiate athletic department. She is responsible for the budgeting, personnel evaluations, facilities manage-ment, representing the department at various organiza-

tional meetings, and the overall leadership of the depart-ment. A holder of three degrees from Ball State Uni-versity, including a master’s (‘90) and doctorate (‘04) in educational administration, Fincannon has led the PHP department for the past four years and also served as the associate dean for special projects in Taylor’s office of aca-demic affairs for the past two years. As PHP department chair, Fincannon oversees an academic department of 15 full-time professors and 7 ad-junct professors, which serves over 150 students in three distinct majors. Fincannon also served as Taylor’s Director of Summer School programs from 2005-2008. Fincannon began her time at Taylor in 1992 when she was hired as Taylor’s head volleyball coach and as an assistant professor of PHP. That was the beginning of a very successful 13-year coaching career for the 2006 Tay-lor University Athletic Hall of Fame inductee. During that span, Fincannon amassed a career record of 496-131 for a .791 winning percentage. Her teams won seven Mid-Central Conference championships and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament four times (1995, 1997, 1999, 2001). The Dream Team of 1997 finished the season with a school record 48-3 mark and advanced to the Elite 8 of the national tournament. Fincannon was named MCC Coach of the Year five times, coached 10 All-Americans, and led her teams on three mission trips.

Amy Stucky is serving Taylor athletics for her 15th year. A 1992 Taylor graduate with a major in biology and a specialization in athletic training, she received her Mas-ter’s Degree from Ball State University in Higher Educa-tion Administration in 1998. Stucky worked for Fox Valley Orthopedics in Elgin, Ill., as an athletic trainer for two years before returning to her alma mater. While assisting in the administration of women’s athletics, Stucky has played a major role in progressively improving the Taylor athletic department. Stucky also serves as an assistant professor in the school’s physical education and human performance de-partment. She begins her second year of service on the university assessment council. Amy is an active member of Hazlewood Christian Church in Muncie, Ind., where she also resides.

The 10th Annual Odle Classic was held on Friday, Aug. 7 at Walnut Creek Golf Course in Upland, Ind., attracting 26 foursomes and over 30 sponsors, with all proceeds benefiting the Taylor University Athletic Department and its student-ath-letes. Making up the 26 teams were groups of alumni, parents, student-athletes, coaches, staff, and other athletic boosters. Over 150 people par-ticipated in the largest single fundraiser the athletic department sponsors each year. Each head coach from Taylor’s 15 sports either played as part of a foursome or served as a greeter on various holes throughout the course.

“I really enjoyed the chance for our coaches to be directly involved with the participants this year,” said Dr. Angie Fincannon, Taylor’s Athletic Director. “This is one of the few opportunities we have as an athletic department to reach out to people who love Taylor athletics.” Also in attendance was Bonnie Odle, the wife of the late Don Odle, who began sports evan-gelism trips at Taylor nearly 60 years ago. Con-tinuing the legacy of Coach Odle, 25 percent of the funds raised by the Taylor University Athletic Hall of Fame at the event are used to send Taylor athletic teams on sports mission trips. The remain-ing 75 percent of the money brought in from the Odle Classic will go toward scholarships for Taylor’s student-athletes. “As a former coach, I know the great re-sponsibility we have to provide appropriate scholar-ship opportunities so that we can recruit the best student-athletes for Taylor University,” Fincannon said. “The key for us in raising scholarship dollars is to make this a yearly event so that we can create endowed scholarships for our teams.” The 11th Annual Odle Classic will be held on Friday, Aug. 6, 2010. For more information, please call (765) 998-5181.
