Wilkes University men’s basketball coach Jerry Rick-rode is excited about the possibilities of his team during the 2009-2010 season and for good reason. The Colonels have eight returning players from last year’s squad that went 15-11 including seven of their top eight scorers from a year ago. Back for the Colonels is the 2007 Freedom Conference Rookie of the year and two-time all-Freedom Conference selection in Tom Kresge as well as the 2008 Freedom Con-ference Rookie of the Year in Chris DeRojas, who was also a second-team selection last season. The two combined to score 33.3 points per contest and hit 75 of the team’s 131 three-pointers last season. Rickrode will have plenty of depth at the guard posi-tion with returnees as well as newcomers that will come in and contribute immediately. With the abundance of ball handlers and shooters, Rickrode will be able to do things offensively his team’s haven’t been able to in the past. “This team has a little bit of a different ticker,” Rickrode said. “They are excitable and have given great effort. The pace they like to play at seems to be much more up-tempo at this point.” While DeRojas, who has scored 784 points in just two seasons, is the main shooting threat for the Colonels, he now has a backcourt partner in Tyler Breznitsky that will

draw defenders away from him. While both will see time at the point, DeRojas looks to be the fl oor leader once again for Wilkes. “Tyler is the rare freshman who possesses

the basketball IQ, court presence and ability level to step in immediately,” Rickrode said. At 5-9, Breznitsky’s talents are deceiving. “Don’t let this backcourt’s size fool you. They are highly skilled and can re-ally play,” said the head coach. DeRojas, who is one of the Freedom Con-ference’s biggest outside threats, has hit 125 three-point fi eld goals over the past two seasons, is on pace to set the school record for three’s in a ca-reer. “Chris has elevated

his game even further. His work ethic has set the bar very high for everyone else in our program,” Rickrode said. Senior Chris Gulla will also be in the mix and will be called upon for his experience and leadership. Gulla aver-aged fi ve points a year ago after starting 23 of 26 games. He hit 40 percent from the fi eld and drained 14 three-pointers while dishing out 42 assists. “Chris will thrive in his role and has been completely business like in his approach so far,” said Rickrode. Over his three-year career, Gulla has put in 390 points and has dished out 127 assists. While Rick-rode will be deep at the guard position, he will also have plenty of options around the basket with Kresge, senior Anthony Gabriel and sophomores Paul Huch and Kendall Hinze.

Kresge became Wilkes’ 23rd player in school history to reach the 1000-point barrier and now has 1117 points to go along with 523 rebounds throughout his career. He becomes the 12th player in school history to reach the 1000-point and 500-rebound plateau for his career. “Tom is the epitome of overall consis-tency. He has the ability to beat you in so many differ-ent ways,” Rick-rode said. Gabriel has been a consistent player both offen-sively and defen-sively for Rickrode and looks to be more of a scoring threat in his fi nal season with the Colonels. Accord-ing to the head coach, Gabriel’s hard work in the offseason is not

only paying off, but showing as well. “There has been a metamorphosis here. He’s in outstanding physical shape and is much stronger,” commented Rickrode. Last year Gabriel was third on the team in rebounds with 4.3 a game while putting in 5.5 points per contest. Huch returns for his second season after leading the team in blocks with 30. The 6-5, 192-pound guard/forward ap-peared in all 26 games where he averaged 3.3 points and 2.7 re-bounds a game. “Paul could be an X factor type of player who brings great versatil-ity to the table at both ends of the fl oor.” Hinze comes back for this sophomore season as one of the team’s best offensive rebounders with 48 last season which was second-best on the team. “Kendall has become more of a physical presence. He’s a throwback player. The kind of guy that packs the lunch pale and goes to work every day,” Rickrode said. The Colonels will open the 2009-2010 season on Nov. 16 when they host PSU Hazelton which will be the fi rst of 10 home games this year. This year’s slate features 11 non-conference contests and two tournaments including the Wilkes-Barre Challenge on Jan. 1-2. Wilkes, which was picked to fi nish third in the Free-dom Conference, opens league play on Dec. 2 against Misericordia at home followed by a Dec. 5 matchup with FDU-Florham in the Marts Center. “The overall process through the fi rst three weeks of practice has been pretty enjoyable. There doesn’t seem to be any ego’s out there and they really seem to be in this for each other.”

Jerry Rickrode returns for his 18th season at the helm of the Wilkes men’s basketball program and during that time he has led the Colonels to a 318-130 record. His .709 winning percentage is among the best all-time in NCAA Division III history for coaches with at least 10 years experience. He also holds the Division III record for being the fastest coach to reach the 200-win plateau, achieving the feat in his fi rst 249 games. Since coming to Wilkes in 1992, Rickrode has led the Colonels to 15 MAC and Freedom Conference playoff appearances, including 10 straight from 1992-2002. He also led the Colonels to fi ve-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including four Sweet Sixteens, three Elite Eights and one Final Four appearance. During the 2000-01 season, Rickrode led Wilkes to a 23-3 record, the Freedom Conference championship, and the school’s sixth berth in the NCAA Tournament in seven years. During the 1997-98 campaign the Colonels posted a 26-5 overall record, won the MAC title, and advanced to the Division III Final Four for the fi rst time in school history. Both the 1995-96 team, which fashioned a 28-2 record, and the 1994-95 teams advanced to the Division III Elite Eight. During Rickrode’s tenure the Colonels have been ranked number-one in Division III twice. Under the guidance of Rickrode the Colonels have posted 17-straight winning seasons, including seven campaigns in which they have registered at least 20 wins. Rickrode was honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches as their Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year after the 2000-01, 1998-99, 1997-98 and 1995-96 seasons. Previously, he has also been named the Freedom coach of the year on three occasions, including 2000-01. Rickrode came to Wilkes after spending four years

as a full-time assistant coach at Ithaca College, where he was in charge of coordinating recruiting and scouting, along with assisting at practices and fl oor coach during games. In addition, Rickrode directed the pre-season and in-season strength and conditioning programs and was a full-time instructor in the Health and Human Performance Department. Prior to Ithaca, Rickrode was an assistant at Utica College in 1987-88, a graduate assistant at Ithaca in 1986-87, and head freshman coach at Skidmore College in 1985-86. Rickrode is a graduate of Skidmore College with a degree in Biology and Physical Education and from Ithaca College with a Master’s Degree in Physical Education. At Skidmore, Rickrode set school records for points and assists in a single season as well as fi eld goal percentage for a career. In 1985 he was named an NAIA Academic All-American and the Skidmore College Senior Athlete of the Year. Rickrode, his wife Kathy, daughter Jordyn, and son Christian, reside in Mountain Top.

Biscaldi is entering his third season on the Colonels sidelines. The combination of basketball experience and a terrifi c basketball mind makes him a great fi t with the Wilkes staff. Biscaldi’s coaching responsibilities include recruiting, preparing the team for opponents, on-court coaching duties, scouting, travel planning and monitoring of student-athletes’ academic progress. He was instrumental in bringing in a highly-recruited freshman class this season. Success has followed Biscaldi at all levels of collegiate basketball. He has served on the coaching staffs of fi ve NCAA Tournament teams throughout his career. His wealth of basketball experience makes him no stranger to successful college basketball. Most recently, Biscaldi served as an assistant coach at St. Francis College, N.Y., where he helped lead them to a conference best re-cord over a four year period. Prior to that, Biscaldi, served

as an assistant coach at Bloomfi eld College and helped guide them to their fi rst conference tournament as an NCAA Divi-sion II program. He was an assistant at Fairleigh Dickinson University when the Knights beat Long Island University in the Northeast Conference Tournament to earn a berth in the 1998 NCAA Division I Tournament, where they played the University of Connecticut to an 11-point loss. Biscaldi also served as an assistant at Gettysburg Col-lege, where he helped lead them to there fi rst NCAA Divi-sion III Tournament. He began his coaching career at Rowan University, where they went to the Sweet 16 and two Final Fours, and were ranked number-one in Division III on three occasions. Biscaldi has coached a countless number of All-Confer-ence and All-American players, including several who have played or are still playing in various places overseas.

Former King’s College standout John Soboleski enters his second season on the Wilkes men’s basketball staff. Soboleski is involved in all facets of the Colonel bas-ketball program with an emphasis in working with the post players. “I feel very comfortable having John working side by side with me in all aspects of the program,” Rickrode said. “He has a very bright future in this profession.” Soboleski was a fi rst-team all-Freedom Conference per-former for King’s, averaging a team-high 16.1 points, 7.8 rebounds while hitting 61.6 percent from the fi eld his senior season. Not only was he the team’s best shooter, he led the team in blocks with 53. The Hanover native led the Freedom Conference in scor-

ing in league games with 18.6 as well as fi eld goal percent-age, hitting 67.5 percent from the fi eld and blocks per game with 2.08. “Obviously John was an outstanding player in our con-ference, but more importantly I was always overly impressed with his demeanor and attitude. He is the kind of young man that demands great respect and our players respond well to him,” Rickrode said.

Paul Burke brings 18 years of coaching experience to the Wilkes staff, including seven as an assistant at Dickinson College from 2001-2008. There, he played a major role in all phases of the program including recruiting, compliance, scouting, scheduling as well as practice and game preparation. Not only did he spend his time with the men’s basketball program, but he served as the head women’s golf coach at Dickinson in 2007 and 2008. Prior to his time at Dickinson College, Burke was an

assistant coach at Annville-Cleona High School in Annville, Pa. There, he assisted in all phases of running a high school and junior high school basketball program which was comprised of six assistant coaches and 60 student athletes. Before Burke entered the coaching ranks, he was a Network Operations Manager for Verizon Communications for 30 years where he managed 150 employees that were responsible for maintaining the voice and data communications for 850,000 customers in Pennsylvania.

Jeremy Kable played basketball for three years at Wilkes University from 2004-2007. During his three years as a Colonel, Kable averaged just over seven points per contest, highlighted by averaging 10 points and over two rebounds his junior season while leading the team in three-point baskets with 61. He appeared in 68 games throughout his career, start-ing in 16 in his fi nal season. Kable hit 112 three-pointers in his career, and participated on Wilkes teams that were over .500 all three seasons. Unfortunately, Jeremy’s career was cut short by a knee injury following his junior season. He will graduate in May with a degree in criminal justice.
