Goshen College student-athletes train and compete in one of the best small college athletic facilities in the nation. The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate ath-letic teams and is one of the newest additions to an ever-growing college campus. The $7.3 million facil-ity houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Whether

you are a member of the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a bas-ketball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes every chance to train and compete successfully.

The luxury of such a large athletic training facil-ity allows athletes to train when their schedule permits. The recreation-fitness center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. With these hours, athletes also have the opportunity to train and compete without sacrificing their academic pursuits. Dur-ing their respective seasons, Goshen teams can all take advantage of the facility in a three-hour time frame and are not forced to practice at odd hours. The spring sports season brings five Gos-hen teams into the facility at one time. The golf team is able to hit balls in one area, while the softball team takes cuts in the batting cage, the baseball team has infield practice and the track-and-field squad trains on the indoor track. Not many institutions can boast of such an efficient use of time or space, and that is one reason Goshen has continued to excel both athletically and academically.

Wiktorowski Cautiously Optimistic About 2009-10Are Struggling With

Depth in 2008-09,Variety and Talent

Of Large GroupNow A Strength For Maple Leafs Squad

GOSHEN, Ind. – “We are optimistic, but cautiously so,” Wiktorowski ex-plained. “We probably play in the best conference in the country. Anytime you are dealing with MCC teams, it is just tough to predict where you will be be-cause everyone is so strong.” Torn ligaments, sprained wrist, broken leg, broken finger, ankle sprains, and sick-nesses depleted a 2008-09 Goshen Col-lege women’s basketball roster that started the season with just 11 players. Injuries limited the Maple Leafs to just five “healthy” players at times and made everything more difficult, from game planning to staying out of foul trouble just to keep everyone out on the floor. Against the odds, Goshen still pulled off some remarkable wins, including a 45-42 victory over #8 ranked Huntington University. The Leafs did not have the depth, however, to compete with the top of the conference on a daily basis, but had the firepower and talent to put up some outstanding fights. After graduating just one senior and bringing in a recruiting class of seven, Wiktorowski now believes he has the depth to be much more consistent. “This is the most talented and deep team I have had here in a long time,” he

explained. “We have tremendous balance both inside and outside and with upper-classmen and new players. I feel like we have a lot of ability and have the chance to surprise some people.” Even with an outstanding recruiting class, the Leafs fortunes in 2009-10 will still rise and fall with the experience and play of their returnees. Leading the way is junior Cassie Greives. Greives has led Goshen in both points (13.8) and re-bounding (9.3) in each of her two seasons and can control the game from the low post. The cautious part of Wiktorowski’s outlook, though, comes from the fact that so many of his players either have had some time off or have no experience at the collegiate level at all. In addition to Gangloff and Yost missing all of last season, Wiktorowski has six freshman on the roster, including several that will see significant minutes right away. After turning last year’s weakness, depth, into a strength for the 2009-10 Maple Leafs, Wiktorowski has reason to be optimistic. While the depth and talent appears to be there, only time will tell how long it will take for Goshen to come together and make some noise in the pow-erful Mid-Central College Conference.

7 – MAPLE LEAFS BASKETBALL

Steve Wiktorowski begins his ninth season as head coach of the Maple Leafs in 2009-10, seven years removed from leading his team to the school’s first ever Mid-Central Conference Championship and NAIA National Tournament berth in 2003-2004. Wiktorowski is intent on returning his team to the promised land. It did not take long for Wiktorowski to put his own brand on the Goshen College women’s basketball program, leading the team to a 10-17 record in his first season (2002-2003) before producing the most wins in school history in his second year. Prior to arriving at Goshen, Wiktorowski spent the previous 21 years of his professional life coaching Indiana high school boys’ basketball, with the last 14 years serving as the head coach at two area schools. From 1995 to 2002, Wiktorowski was the head coach at Prairie Heights High School in LaGrange, Indiana, while serving as the head coach at Fairfield High School in the seven years prior to that. Before becoming a head coach at the varsity level, Wiktorowski spent seven years as an assistant coach at both Fairfield and Northridge High School. During his 14-year career as a head high school coach, he compiled an overall record of 123-176 and was 72-38 while at Fairfield against Northeast Corner Conference opponents. Wiktorowski graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington with a degree in physical education in 1980. He acquired his master’s degree in secondary education from Indiana University-Fort Wayne in 1990. He lives with his wife, Donna, and their two children, Troy (13) and Erin (10) in Goshen.
