As we move into winter we start to look for more social activities in which to continue to enjoy the friendships developed out on trips. Keith Wilcox has put together a number of activities over the coming three months that I am sure many of you will enjoy. To be able to effectively plan these events and activities and to make appropriate bookings requires people to register their names for the event well in advance. So, if you have thought you would like to be part of an event, please put your name down on the trip sheet at the meeting or email the organiser, copying Keith Wilcox (social organiser) and Josan Moss (trip coordinator) as well.

The committee has now decided the venue for the Annual Dinner in October will be out at the Beverley Freemasons Hotel. We looked at venues in York but found them too expensive. Beverley is only 30km away from York so provides easy access to its attractions either on the way to or back from there. As an added treat, David Peck is going to arrange for discounted “gliding experience” flights from the local gliding club of which he is a member and will be duty pilot for the weekend! We have yet to put out social event sheets for the dinner, but keep 17th October free till then. Keith has included a promo to give you details of what we are planning.

Our Club membership tally has just reached 50 cars again! with recent memberships for the Leserve family and the Hurst family - Richard Leserve wrote a trip report whilst still only a prospective member! and of course there is Phil and Souk Wong and Daniel and Tanya Snape who joined early in the year and were on the Yeagarup Dunes trip over Easter. Please welcome and say hello to them when you meet them “out there”. It is good to see some younger members joining the club again. On the flip side of youth, many of our members are now retired or not working and are not confined to weekend only activities. I would be interested to hear from members whether they think we should consider arranging mid week trips as well.

There has been poor progress on the entry form for the A4WDA

“Experience Gold Class, a cinema that's in a class of its own and a world apart from the rest - an intimate setting that seats 26-34 peo-ple. Whilst you relax in this first class cinema setting, try our new taste menu offering a wide variety of dishes such as canapés and cock-tails, dips and desserts, platters and pizza, wraps and wedges and a bar menu to satisfy all tastes. There's waiter service too. You can arrange to have your order de-livered to your seat at a time specified by you or relax in the lounge setting of the Gold Class Bar.”

The above is their advertising promotion for Gold Class. I have booked the 26 seat cinema with their $49 package which includes the Gold Class movie experience and a supper which they have not yet finalised but is likely to be a something like a gourmet mini burger and pizza with a bottle of water.

The movie is yet to be determined and this will be advised some-time prior. The time will be probably around 7 – 7.30pm and if we get there early we can lounge in the bar having pre-movie drinks to get us in the mood for the evening. You must be over 18 for Gold Class.

We will need to fill the entire cinema, so if it is not filled by mem-bers by mid August it will be open to friends and relatives to make up the numbers. We need full payment by the August 11th gen-eral meeting.

Date: Saturday 5 September

Cost: $49 for movie and supper

TRIP PROMOTIONS/INFORMATION

Nanga 4 WD Heritage Track

Alternatively, this day trip could be titled “Almost spring time in the Jar-rah”. The core of this trip comes from: “Western Australia 4 WD Top 50” by M. and J. Pelusey.

The route goes through very attractive forest. Some elements from past logging activities are also present. Early wildflowers should hope-fully be emerging by this stage

The Peluseys state “this is no Canning Stock Route, but is prone to eroded gullies from heavy winter rains.” Having done a recce run the day after heavy rain, I’d say this is fair comment.

The level of difficulty is sufficient to be interesting without being overly challenging so is well suited for beginners.

Approximate return distance ex Perth is around 280 km.

Meet at: Coventry’s car park-2888 Albany Hwy, Kelmscott (corner of Davis St & Albany Hwy)

On: Sunday 2nd August

Time: 9 am for 9.15 start

Bring: Morning tea, lunch, CB radio

Put your name down on the trip sheet if you are taking part. Phone Tom Minto on 9382 4678 if you have any questions.

Fremantle Prison Tunnels Tour - Sunday 12 July

“Do you need a prison adventure?

Get into your hardhat, slip into your overalls, pull on your boots and charge your headlamps before locking into the ladder system and de-scending 20 metres into the depths below.

Trek through sections of the labyrinth of tunnels by foot, then board the replica convict punts to explore the submerged passageways ac-cessible only by boat.

Discover original blast holes, bores, oil lamp recesses and artefacts from the days when working in the tunnels was hard labour for prison-ers. Dodge tree roots and find the plaque as you journey through this underground maze of tunnels on your extreme heritage adventure.”

The above is their promo for the Tunnel Tour, you can see why they say you must be physically able, OK with heights, confined spaces and they give you an alco-hol breath test.

I have booked for the 9.45 am tour which lasts for 2-1/2 hours. The cost is not cheap but it cer-tainly sounds like an adventure.

All equipment is supplied except BYO socks. They suggest shorts or jeans and long hair tied back. Get your name down quick as there are only 12 people per tour.

Date: Sunday 12 July

Time: 9.30 am for the 9.45 am tour

Where to meet: Fremantle Prison Entrance

Cost: $59 Adult, $49 Concession, $39 Children (over 12 only)

Mundaring Day trip July 19th

Our regular Power line trip is on again. A chance to learn or hone up our skills in some hilly /rocky country. This area close to Perth gives us a chance to practice in terrain that you may come across when venturing up north or down south and you have to make a decision as to whether you can successfully and safely get in and out or just get through. As they say, do it often enough and it becomes easy.

Meeting spot : Corner Great Eastern Hwy and Flynn Rd. turn into Flynn Rd and there is an area on the right that makes a nice meeting spot. If you miss the turn off the next signage will be Lakes turnoff to YORK.

Meeting Time : 9.15 for a 9.30 am start. As a guide around 45-60 mins from Perth centre.

What to bring: Picnic lunch, morning/afternoon nibbles, good foot-ware camera hats etc. We may let our tyres down, so tyre pump and gauge. If you are new to the Club just bring yourself, we will have gauge and pump for you.

Finishing time: Opportunity for those that need to leave after lunch to do so. For the rest I would expect that we would be heading back to Perth around 3.30-4.00pm . There is a further option for those who have no time constraint at the end of day.

Difficulty : We have had first timers on this run and they have en-joyed the day. Likewise the experienced driver can also be chal-lenged. We have also done this run at night.

CONTACT: For more info contact me on 9440 4075.

Western Flora Caravan & Tourist Park

Western Flora is situated 22 km north of Eneabba, 300km north of Perth on the Brand Highway. It is a 160 acre park and is famous for its diversity of flowering plants which should be at their best at this time of year. They have a daily guided wildflower discovery walk at 4.30 – 7.00pm which I suggest we take on Saturday. The option is to have a meal prepared by them after the walk.

They also have two room self contained mud brick chalets, onsite caravans & standard twin rooms if you wish to upgrade but these would have to be booked well in advance.

To make the most of the weekend I will be leaving Friday afternoon others are welcome to join me. If you wish to stay longer please make your own bookings, mention the Subaru Club booking and advise me of your intentions. Visit the Western Flora website for more info:

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS

JULIMAR CONSERVATION PARK

Sunday 10 May 2009 (Mother’s Day)

Tony Richards took us to a beautiful conservation park not far from Perth, one that many of us were completely unaware of. Half past nine and Ginger’s (Caltex) Roadhouse, Great Northern High-way Upper Swan saw nine Subarus ready to leave at the appointed time - two Outbacks and seven Foresters. We headed north, turning right into Muchea East Road which became Chittering Road. At Julimar Road we turned right again and, a short distance along, left into Western Boundary Road which lives up to its name. So a mere 45 minutes after leaving Gin-ger’s we were in the Julimar Conservation Park which covers 28,000 hectares between Bindoon and Toodyay. Most were expecting a bit of a doddle of a day. According to Western Patrol Club website nearly half the area now cov-ered by the Julimar Conservation Park was farmed early last century, but many of the farms were abandoned in the 1930s Depression. It later be-came State Forest and was logged for timber until about 1970. The Park is now an important reserve for native fauna conservation. Despite the Park's history, there are still extensive well-established, picturesque wan-doo woodlands in the valleys and on the slopes around Julimar Brook, and mixed jarrah-wandoo forest (and dryandra) on the surrounding later-ite plateaus.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) had warned Tony that a bulldozer had recently been through the park to clear storm debris from the tracks. Consequently much of the track was loose, with rocks and stones and smaller branches. A swirl of fine brown dust blew up around each vehicle and adhered so well that it looked as though CSI had sent their fingerprinting team over. So we spread out along the track making radio communication difficult at times. The rays of the morning sun were highlighted by the dust rising between the trees beside the tack.

The track featured a number of steep rocky ascents and descents, most no bother at all in 1st Low. The bush beside the track was beautiful wan-doo bushland, with powderbark wandoo (Eucalyptus accedens), marri, dryandra, hakea, xanthorrhoea (balga) and zamia palm. Although dry at

the moment eve-ryone recognised the spring time potential of this bushland. The smooth pale cream and pink bark of the wan-doo and powder-bark were very attractive and made a change from jarrah re-growth of the eastern hills closer to Perth.

On a tip from Simon we hopped out of cars to rub our hands on the powderbark, more powdery than regular wandoo, and pinker too.

Since 1992 the DEC has been releasing various native marsupials into the park under the Western Shield program including the chuditch (western quoll), quenda (southern brown bandicoot), woylies (bettongs), and the tammar wallaby. Apparently this strategy has suc-cessfully created an island refuge among the farmland. We of course saw none of these, being the shy creatures that they are (mostly). There were, however, plenty of grazing kangaroos - spotted by the lead vehicles at least - and a few emu.

A recently constructed culvert showed a creative, if expensive, con-struction method: unopened bags of quick-set cement had been stacked up like bricks to stabilise the bank. Now there’s a building tip you can try out at home folks.

We continued into dryandra woodland with jarrah and more wandoo. There was evidence of the 2007 fire with much regrowth, particularly in the jarrah areas. There was also plenty of mature post-logging re-growth.

Turning into Flat Rocks Road we continued to wind around the park boundaries with the park on our right and arid farmland on our left. At times rocky steps at the top of a hill or some deeply eroded ruts re-

quired a careful approach. By this time the orange ball bearing gravel had appeared too. Though delightful in spring it would be more of a challenge if wet and slippery.

The track skirted an-other farm which is lo-cated within the park boundary eventually turning into Whittaker Road, Cooks Road, and Gakaling Road where we stopped for lunch when I dis-covered an-other vege-tarian mem-ber, Rae Le Serve.

At one o’clock we resumed our Julimar ramble turning off Gakaling Road to Mortimer Road and later on to Cooks Road again. Although most of the track was brown laterite, towards the later part of the trip we verged into a few areas of banksia woodland on sand. After further kangaroo sightings several members suggested that they be made honorary club members, since they are Super-Roos. We crossed a number of bone dry creek beds with little difficulty but a big gutter down the middle of one upward slope ahead caused drivers to check out the track on foot. This was tackled successfully by all with a go-around which included a sharp left hand turn. Another spot required a group lift of a medium tree which had fallen across the track. This occurred only once, with evidence of the bull-dozer’s work in various piles along the track. Towards the end of the afternoon we were thrilled when a short-beaked echnida (or spiny ant-eater, Tachyglossus aculeatus) made an appear-ance. This solitary and generous monotreme stayed put beside the road rolled up as they often do, with its snout buried under a rock, per-haps hoping that the large collection of people with digital cameras would go away.

The patience of Dave Peck and Fiona Willcox was rewarded by seeing the echidna walking! Perhaps one of them will put a link to the video clip made on the club’s website. A brief afternoon tea/pee stop at 3.30pm and we packed up stumps for

home. As we headed back along the Chit-tering Road blacktop, Simon, who was near the rear of the convoy, an-nounced in his drollest voice the imminent arrival of a group of organ donors (motor bike riders) passing into the convoy. Photo by David Peck

In all, the driving was more challenging and the landscape more inter-esting than most of us had expected. It’s always a delight to discover a beautiful place, so close to Perth too. We returned to Perth, turning off in Muchea to Muchea South Road and Railway Road and right onto Neaves Road. This led us past new housing estates and directly to Wanneroo Road and the Mitchell Free-way. Another nice shortcut to know. And another thoroughly enjoyable day trip with the Subaru Club. Swan Valley Sojourn

Sunday morning found us gathering at Lake Monger for Simon's Swan Valley tour. It was a beautiful morning and by 10 am we were climbing aboard the bus to begin our tour, with Simon as driver. After an im-promptu tour of Osborne Park industrial area we headed down Reid highway to West Swan road and our first stop-the Margaret River Choc. factory. We picked up Wendy and Robert here and went inside to sam-ple and buy chocs.

As we had half and hour here most took the opportunity to get a caffeine fix before going over the road to Lancaster's winery. Quite a few groups had the same idea as we gathered under the vine covered patio to sam-ple some of their whites and reds which went down very nicely. Soon it was back on the bus with Simon making sure we didn't dilly-dally as we had a tight schedule to follow!! It was a pleasant drive to Oakover Estate winery where we had more tastings and our lunch stop. This time we were inside and those not tasting we able to admire the many paintings, cards, jewelry other products for sale. Lunch was entree and mains with several choices for both and this turned out to be a resounding success. I think we could have used a "nana nap" afterwards! We overstayed at this stop so it was back on the bus and off to the Mondo Nougat factory, about 10 minutes away. Lots of people enjoying the day. Some of us purchased goodies and then back on the bus and off to Great Western Distillery where some of us had cocktails to top up our alcohol intake for the day! Oggie's ice creamery was the next stop and due to the popular-ity of the place we had to queue up so took longer than expected but it was worth the wait. Very yummy!! Our last stop was Edgecombe Bros winery. We had coffee outside under cover and just enjoyed the ambi-ence of the place and the great company. We tried a nice Muscat and Tokay which was "free and on the house" as Basil Fawlty would say. All too soon we were back on the bus and off to the Chocolate factory to drop off Robert and Wendy. It was quite mellow driving back to our cars. What a great day thanks to Wendy and Keith for organizing our venues and to Simon for driving us so expertly.

Thanks also to all our fellow travelers for making it such a good day.

See you on the next trip.

Roz Carey.

DON’T remove battery from Subaru

I removed the battery from a Forester to get at the headlight to replace the globe and am still trying to get it to run properly again.

The later models have learning computers and removing the battery gave it amnesia. After much frustration as to why it would not idle after-wards I found out that some get really get upset and the only cure is to keep driving it around going from very low revs to very high until it slowly relearns what to do. After a couple of hours it is just driveable with regard to stalling every time you stop and now only does it occa-sionally instead of every time. Some cars seem a lot worse than others and this one is bad. So motto is plug in a backup battery to the ciga-rette lighter with car on accessories before changing the battery. Also saves hassle if your radio is coded with a pin number and won’t work again until you re-enter it. (and you don’t know it, do you)

Brass Monkey

CANNON BALLS!!! DID YOU KNOW THIS? I DIDN'T

It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the can-non on old war ships. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem. The best storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.

Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for reasons unknown, a Monkey. But if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make them of brass - hence, Brass Monkeys.

Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.

Thus, it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. And all this time, you thought that was just a vulgar expres-sion, didn't you? Ian

Low Coolant Alarm I had been looking around for quite some time at low coolant warning devices that worked off a probe inserted into a radiator hose.

But I ended up getting an Engine Watchdog TM2 ($149 ex Queen-sland) because of some benefits I believe it has over the other type. It actually measures engine temperature (not coolant) and has an audio alarm for high temperature (which you set) and it can also be con-nected to your low oil pressure light for an audio warning.

Fitting was easy as the unit comes pre-wired and I mounted the ther-mocouple under a bolt holding a bracket onto the cylinder head (this was the hardest part) and connected up the alarm wire to the low oil pressure switch. The display has a very bright LED and I decided to put it out of my direct line of sight in the area just under the auxiliary switch panel. This meant cutting out the central support for the switch panel and cutting/bending the mounting bracket on the Engine Watch-dog but it ended up a perfect fit after a bit of filing.

It works- I had my car serviced today and they forgot to put the radia-tor cap on properly. I first noticed the coolant smell then glanced at the Scan gauge which showed 111 degrees (normally high 80's) and the engine watchdog was at 96 degrees (normally high 70's) as I had set the trigger temperatures at 100 degrees.

I stopped and refilled the expansion tank with distilled water then picked Jason up from school and as I was explaining all this to him the engine watchdog alarm went off. So stop again and recheck the cool-ant level, which was OK and put the heater on full and air conditioning

on to bring the temperature down to normal. There may have been a bit of an air lock in it.

The dealer was most apolo-getic and sent one of their mechanics to collect my car from work, with a container of coolant. They drained / refilled the coolant system at their expense.
