Pek Yew ChaiChairmanSingapore infocomm Technology Federation

This year is the 25th anniversary of the SiTF and it will mark a watershed year in the Federation’s role as a vanguard organization for the Singapore infocomm industry. Two themes permeate our work – international impact, and providing ballast for the Singapore infocomm industry. Underpinning these two themes is a continuing branding campaign to support growth.

Providing leadership, evangelism and representative support, as well as an avenue for the infocomm industry to make links and develop enduring and profi table partnerships with major players including industry stakeholders, have always been central to our mission. Our work is divided into six areas: marketing and branding; business networking; business intelligence; internationalization; education and development; and, industry representation.

Ongoing programs across each chapter enable a fertile breeding ground for local visionaries, as well as opportunities for Singapore entrepreneurs to interact with their counterparts from foreign multinationals.

This year, we raise activity to new strategic levels by taking steps towards opening doors and providing leverage for our membership to take their businesses to new heights, both locally and internationally.

Ultimately, we will be working to carve out a blue chip, global platform for Singapore’s infocomm industry so that, in addition to the country’s worldclass commercial and trading infrastructure, we can proudly lay claim to a world-class, leading edge infocomm industry.

With the economic growth averaging 7% over the past two years, the time is ripe for increased efforts in this area. So, in addition to other programs, we are also reviewing opportunities to add to the two highly successful Singapore solutions centres already established in Shanghai and Hangzhou in China.

“Providing leadership, evangelism and representative support, as well as an avenue for the infocomm industry to make links and develop enduring and profi table partnerships with major players including industry stakeholders, have always been central to our mission.”

Internationalization needs a strong brand, and with this in mind, we are doubling efforts to raise the profi le of the Singapore infocomm industry to give our members better visibility in the global IT solutions arena. Hence, we are increasing the circulation of this directory and are distributing it to other countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.

This directory is a starting point for those wanting to make inroads into the infocomm industry. I encourage you to use it in the spirit in which it was developed.

FLAGSHIP EVENTSSiTF V-Day 200701

A Helping HandSiTF reaches out to the community with volunteer outings and $31,000 raised for the President’s Challenge

While the nature of Singapore information Technology Federation (SiTF) is about the hardware (read: complex binary and computer codes), there is also the software evident in its makings. The good people at SiTF remembers the community at large and continues to pledge support every year to the President’s Challenge with a series of fundraising events, volunteer outings and the annual Volunteer’s Day celebration.

On Volunteer’s Day held on August 18 2007 at The Legends, Fort Canning Park together with the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), SiTF managed to raise a remarkable $31,000 for the President’s Challenge 2007.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, graced the occasion as the Guest-of-Honour. Dr Vivian delivered an opening address and awarded tokens of acknowledgement to all sponsors and participating companies. Ms Tan Yen Yen, the organising chairman of SiTF’s V-day 2007, gave a warm welcome address to kick-off the day’s event.

The event saw 115 attendees together with more than 300 volunteers and 18 corporate companies taking part. Generous donations came in from companies like Microsoft Singapore Pte Ltd, Cisco Systems (USA) Pte Ltd, E-Cop Pte Ltd and individual donors such as Mr Mock Pak Lum.

Event sponsors include Hewlett-Packard Singapore (Sales) Pte Ltd, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, and Singapore Technologies Electronics Pte Ltd (Platinum), ECS Computers Asia Pte Ltd (Gold), E-Cop Pte Ltd, Oracle Corporation Singapore Ltd, Siemens IT Solutions and Services Pte Ltd (Silver) and Watchfi re Asia Pacifi c Ltd (Bronze). Other participating company includes E-Book Systems Pte Ltd.

In total, SiTF has raised $31,000 for the President’s Challenge 2007 but volunteerism extends beyond the monetary contributions. It is also about the groundwork where staff and employees get more involved with the community in order to foster a closer relationship. For instance, the SiTF Secretariat and welfare home volunteers took a group of 26 children from MacPherson Moral Family Services Centre on an outing to the Singapore Science Centre.

In addition, corporate participation goes up a gear. Many corporations got into the act of reaching out to the less fortunate and benefi ciaries of Volunteer Welfare Organisations (VWO) with a series of activities held from August to September 2007.

Companies like Crimson Logic Pte Ltd, e-Cop Pte Ltd, Frontline Technologies Corporation Ltd and SQLView Pte Ltd & NetAssist Services Pte Ltd held various excursions with their respective VWOs, which include the Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore, the Handicaps Welfare Association, the Singapore Visually Handicapped and the Society for the Physical Disabled.

FLAGSHIP EVENTSASOCIO APICTA AWARDS 200701

Two Become OneThe ASOCIO ICT Summit and the APICTA Awards hosted by SiTF turned out to be a great success

It was history making in the process. For the fi rst time ever, SiTF had the honour to host two prestigious events at the same time – the Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation (ASOCIO) ICT Summit and the Asia Pacifi c ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards.

Both events had a total of 400 delegates in attendance, including senior infocomm managers, venture capitalists and top governmental offi cers from the Asia Pacifi c region. The combined efforts provided the perfect platform for technology exchanges, ICT innovation and creativity, trade partnerships as well as cross-pollination of ideas.

The ASOCIO comprises of 20 member associations from the region, which includes more than 10,000 ICT companies. The ASOCIO ICT Summit is one of the most prestigious events in the region where ICT business leaders and top government offi cers from the key regional economies, namely Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore provided updates on their countries’ ICT masterplans.

Meanwhile, the distinguished Asia Pacifi c ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards is an international awards event that aims to increase ICT awareness and promote ICT innovations within respective member economies. The awards and host of auxiliary activities created an excellent platform for networking and product benchmarking to ICT innovators and entrepreneurs in the region.

A series of activities were held during the ASOCIO summit and APICTA awards for the delegation. Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Dr Lee Boon Yang, graced the welcome reception at the Fort Canning Park. Delegates from 22 countries such as Australia, Pakistan and Thailand attended the reception.

Dr Lee was also present at the Meet-the-Minister session. A total of 35 delegates and the Minister exchanged ideas and information on the ICT landscape of the ASOCIO economies during the hour-long session. In addition, the ASOCIO 25th general assembly was held on November 27 at the Raffl es Convention Centre.

As the hosting nation, Singapore was more than delighted to showcase its capabilities. Five local enterprises hosted the delegates, namely ST Electronics, NCS, Hewlett-Packard Singapore (HP Cooltown), e-Government Leadership Centre and Ascendas. And of course there was fun involved amidst the hustle and bustle. 16 golfers participated in a half-day golf session at the Marina Golf Course.

One of the highlights in the programme includes the ASOCIO ICT Summit. The theme was Powering the Engine of Growth in Asia through Entrepreneurship & Innovation and the objective was to highlight the opportunities opened to the ASOCIO member countries.

Singapore, Japan, Korea and Malaysia presented their respective countries’ ICT masterplans to the audience, which consisted of about 230 participants.

Similarly, 17 organisations participated in the birds-of-a-feather marketplace at the summit venue foyer, which was primarily an exhibition to allow exchanges between delegates and non-summit professionals. Likewise, the birds-of-a-feather presentation sessions were designed to present an excellent networking platform where ICT industry players would be able to interact and discuss potential business collaboration. A total of 25 companies presented.

And then came the night to celebrate and remember, especially for the people at Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). At the ASOCIO Gala Dinner, about 170 guests were entertained by the dance duo of Sharon & Melvin, Dr William McCelland and Buddy Loren. The ASOCIO IT Award, which had been organised since 1995 to honour leading industry or government personality in the host economy for their leadership in developing the IT industry, was presented to IDA at the dinner.

It was another record to go into the books because for the fi rst time in ASOCIO history, the ASOCIO IT Award was presented to a leading ICT enterprise. And to end the night on a nice note, the privilege to host ASOCIO 2008 was handed over to Hong Kong. The special guest from Hong Kong, Mrs. Rita Lau, JP, Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology), The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, gave a welcome address for ASOCIO 2008.

Certainly, kudos must be given to SiTF for organising two of the most important and prestigious events in the ICT industry to clockwork perfection and excellence. The success of the events is a testament of SiTF’s reputation to create opportunities for everyone on a like-minded platform.

FLAGSHIP EVENTSGOLF CLASSIC 200801

It’s Raining MenAnd women. The SiTF Golf Classic saw male and female golfers gath-ered for some tee-off action

“Rain rain go away, please come back another day” – that was a common refrain heard at the SiTF Golf Classic 2008 held on April 24 at the Raffl es Country Club. And interestingly, it’s as if the gods heard the prayers and the downpour in the morning did pave way for clear skies in the afternoon for the golf game.

The annual SiTF Golf Classic fl agship event is organised to gather golfers within the infocomm industry for a day of fun, networking and teeing off at the green. Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, graced the event this year. Mr Pek Yew Chai, Chairman of SiTF and Ms Ho Semun, Executive Director SiTF, welcomed the Minister.

Before hitting the green, the golfers got their stomachs fi lled with a sumptuous Hainanese chicken rice buffet lunch. And then it was game on. The GOH fl ight consisted of Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Mr Pek Yew Chai, Mr Loh Teck Heng (SiTF Golf Classic 2008 Chairman) and Mr Chris Khang from Cisco, who is the tee-to-green sponsor.

The guests started off on the Palm Course Hole 1 at about 1.30 pm. The good weather ensured that the golfers had as much fun as possible. Despite a drizzle in the late afternoon, the golfers were not deterred one bit. Kudos to the female golfers who were equals to the game as well. The ladies had just as much fun teeing off and hitting the drives.

The game ended in the evening and it was time to relax those muscles. The participants were treated to a gastronomical dinner spread amidst special entertainment performances put by the Baobei sisters, whose lovely voices were heard in the local movie 881. Trophies were awarded to the winners of the golf game and tokens given to the sponsors, who made the event possible. Here’s to more fun at the next golf classic event – sans the rain of course.

FLAGSHIP EVENTSSITEX 200701

Going GreenSITEX 2007 was a tremendous success in visitorship, sales and of course, doing its part for charity and the environment

Green was the colour of choice at SITEX 2007. Besides drawing the insurmountable crowds to the IT and consumer lifestyle fair, the 19th edition of SITEX got into the act and played Captain Planet. For the fi rst time ever, SITEX 2007, a fl agship event of SiTF, partnered with fi rst-time exhibitors Cash Converters and Clean Solutions in a bid to reduce environmental damage arising from e-wastes.

From computers, televisions to other consumer electronics, these products are potentially hazardous to the environment when discarded, otherwise known as e-wastes. As a result, SiTF went the extra mile in encouraging visitors at the mega exhibition to trade in their unwanted but working electronic products for instant cash at the Cash Converter’s booth.

Similarly, those with items that didn’t meet Cash Converter’s requirements did their bit for charity by discarding their electronic items into recycling bins provided by Clean Solutions. The organisers then donated the revenue collected from the extraction of precious metals from the electronic refuse to the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD).

In addition, 6 new segments were unveiled in this year’s show, which comprised of Automobile Electronics, IT Education, IT for Kids, Business IT, New Technology and Smart Home. This gamut of segments simply provided more lifestyle options for the discerning consumers. From the digital media technologies, automobile, home to offi ce environment, the assortment of choices proved SITEX to be more than just an IT event.

Of course, there were the usual segments that consumers still fl ocked to for the best bargains and prices. They include Animation, Camera & Camcorder, Computer & Hardware, Gaming, New Technology, Home Entertainment, Mobile Communications and MP3/MP4.

New technology products were introduced as well and one of the highlights included the “Ladies Go Tech!” segment, where the organisers and exhibitors were out in full force to woo the independent women. The fi rst 50 ladies to present a single receipt with a minimum purchase of $200 can redeem a free gift. Also, popular gadgets for the ladies such as the i.Tech (i.Lady bluetooth headset) and Personal Automation Mart (Kohjinsha mobile PC) were heavily promoted.

As for the men, they were kept busy checking out displays and models of the intelligent cars of the future at the Automobile Electronics segment. The lads were impressed with the wide range of auto electronics showcased, including audio and video accessories, GPS and navigation systems, handheld information devices and in-car entertainment from brand leaders such as Hanman, Smart-I, Nextbase, Tibo and MapKing.

Held at the Singapore Expo, the Singapore’s longest running IT event generated more than $35 million in sales over four days with more than 500 exhibitors showcasing their wares. The event was certainly a success and cheers to SiTF for doing its bid for the environment.

FLAGSHIP EVENTSSiTF 25th ANNIVERSARY01

And the Award goes to…Razzle dazzle with the stars and award nominees at the 25th Anniver-sary Academy Awards Gala Dinner

It was all about fun and glamour at the 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner held at the Marina Mandarin Hotel. Based on the Academy Awards theme, all 310 guests sashayed up the stairs and showed up at the ballroom in style and substance.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Ministry for Information, Communications and the Arts was invited as the Guest-Of-Honour to grace this rambunctious event. And like the Hollywood awards show, recipients went onstage to receive their Oscars, or trophies.

The ceremony began with speeches from the SiTF Chairman and Guest-of-Honour followed by the “serious awards” presentation to e-Learning competition winners, past chairmen, business partners and SiTF chapters’ chairmen. The “fun awards” were then promptly given out to the SiTF 06/07 councillors, who were presented with caricatures of themselves all cheekily drawn and nicely framed up.

Similarly, it is constantly identifying new markets and opportunities through active engagement with various industry delegations, which will then be made available to the members. In short, the BSC is doing its best to help one another to capitalise on the market.

A prime example would be the networking session held with the delegates from Shandong on April 18 2008. The province of Shandong, located in the eastern coastal region of China, is one of the most developed provinces in the country. A team led by Mr Pek Yew Chai, Chairman of SiTF, played host to the Chinese delegation.

The delegation team, comprising of Mr Liu Xiaojiang, Vice Director General, Department of Foreign Trade & Economic Cooperation of Shandong Province, and Mr Ma Weigang, Vice Director General, Qingdao Economic & Technological Development Zone, visited SiTF to seek collaboration opportunities of developing the information industry in Shandong province.

During the session, SiTF and Infocomm Singapore gave short presentations while the Shandong delegation provided an update on the rapid development of information industry in Shandong province. This networking session provided plenty of opportunities for both sides to work closely together in the near future.

The BSC is looking forward to more of such networking sessions in the coming year. More opportunities will be explored, which means things are looking good on the horizon for Singapore to become a highly attractive outsourcing destination for businesses.
