By Telly Halkias HOOSICK FALLS – Ten wins might have

been a respectable total for a rebuilding Hoosick Falls Central School boys’ varsity baseball team last season, but the key to missing the post-season was their performance in the Wasaren League, managing just four wins as a result of a number of nail-biters that didn’t go their way.

But longtime Coach Mike Lilac has a squad that will rely on its stud senior pitcher-slugger, aggressive play, and attention to detail in its defensive efforts, something that eluded them in 2007.

All eyes will be on Mike “Moose” Magazu, who leaves no secrets on the mound or at the plate. A prototypical power arm, and a south-paw to boot, Magazu is the type of player that can blow the competition away on any given inning, whoever the opponent. His alter ego, right hander Andrew Morin will be called upon to baffle opposing hitters with his mix of well placed, varied pitches, a control artist if ever there was one.

“Moose” will also continue his slugging ways, taking that natural left-handed uppercut of his that struck fear in right-handed opponents. For his part, though, Morin is expected to be squad’s top hitter and run producer with an on-base percentage of .526 to his credit in 2007.

Up-and coming sophomore Seth Foster is expected to show-off his defensive versatility, and may see playing time at nearly every position. The Panthers just need to work hard at catching the ball, and a trip to the sectionals should be their just reward.

BENNINGTON – Lacrosse is a venerable game, handed down by the Iroquois to become one of New England’s beloved. It’s also steeped in esoterica, and care for details is as important an element as fitness and skills.

This spring, the Mount Anthony Union High School girls’ lacrosse team will try to heed the X’s and O’s of Coach Tom Otero’s approach, and in the process, win the first state championship under his eight year watch.

Early signs are promising. Otero already had to whittle down a large group of dedicated athletes who spent the winter voluntarily driv-ing themselves to improve on the 8-8 record of the 2007 campaign, one which began with much promise in the Marble Valley League and ended in a disappointing manner that none of the seniors on this year’s squad want repeated.

Led by co-captains Rochelle McGurn and Che Albowicz, the Lady Patriots will look to be anchored in goal by stalwart Danica Hill. Kristen Carra will seek not only to maintain her scoring prowess of last season, but to challenge McGurn for the team lead, something she is very capable of doing when playing at her peak.

Ultimately, the team’s fortune will rest on improv-ing the overall stick-handling skills, and their ability to stay mentally tough. Otero is being handed the reins to what just might be his most talented team since the 2003 state semi-finalist. How well he inspires his senior lead-ers might very well make the difference between a good season, and binging home some hardware.
