Building on Tradition

Trent University has a proud and distinctive history – one that is built on a foundation of excellence and exemplified daily by our students, faculty, staff, alumni and donors. Trent is also a place that prides itself on tradition and, as the University’s new president, I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to build on that tradition, to honour Trent’s founding principles and values, and transition us towards a dynamic new future.

As a scholar, I know first-hand of the importance of collaboration and as I begin my role as president, I look forward to meeting both donors and friends of the University alike to learn more about the distinctions and strengths of Trent. I am also eager to greet members of our distinguished alumni family – both domestic and international – and I look forward to welcoming all alumni back to campus at Head of the Trent and meeting you throughout the year.

Dr. Steven E. Franklin, Ph.D., FCASIPresident and Vice-Chancellor

International Legacy

At Trent, high quality of education and a genuine sense of community combine to make the “Trent Experience” truly distinctive. It is this experience that brings together all members of the Trent community – from international students and faculty to alumni and donors and partners.

Trent graduates are truly making an impact in our world through distinguished careers and desire to make a difference. It is a lesson they learned from their time at Trent and these alumni are now choosing to invest in an institution where they feel connected to things that matter. In the last year alone, alumni contributed an incredible $2.6 million to Trent, including a generous $1 million gift from international alumnus and world-renowned property developer, Justin Chiu. Internationalization is a key component of the Trent experience. Not only do we invite the world in to study at Trent, we also offer unparalleled study abroad experiences for our Canadian students, and our faculty collaborate on critical international research projects.

As always, Trent is grateful for the generosity and support of our donors, especially in this challenging economic climate. This year, we are particularly thankful to our alumni and friends who have continued to support the University, investing in our students and the future of the institution.

New Nature Trail Named in Honour of Former Board Member

In a special ceremony on October 3, 2008 Trent University paid tribute to John de Pencier, a long time friend, supporter and honorary board member, with the official opening of a new trail in the Trent Nature Areas named in his honour. The John de Pencier Nature Trail, a two kilometre trail located in the Canal Nature Areas on the east bank of Trent University’s Symons campus, was made possible through the generosity of Mr. de Pencier’s friends and family who established the John de Pencier Fund for Trent’s Nature Areas in 2000. Over $100,000 has been raised for the endowment.

Building on a Foundation of International Scholarship

A leader in international scholarship since its inception, Trent prides itself on a long tradition of excellence that remains in full swing today. To ensure the future of international education at the University remains bright, an impressive $1.8 million was donated to Trent in 2008/09 to support our students from around the globe and those domestic students who wish to experience the world first-hand. Shawn T. Callaghan Memorial Prize

In April 2009, Trent announced the creation of a new student award, the Shawn T. Callaghan Memorial Prize, to support undergraduate students who wish to pursue study abroad opportunities. The prize, valued at $1,000, was created by the Champlain College Cabinet in honour of Shawn Callaghan, a student at Champlain College who died hiking in the Swiss Alps in 2007.

“Shawn was a very adventurous and curious student, so we hope this award will inspire other students to further their knowledge and see the world beyond the doors of Trent.”

Anonymous Donor Honours Jack Matthews

In honour of foundingdirector of the Trent International Program (TIP), a generous anonymous donor established the Jack Matthews Study and Research Abroad endowed bursary fund, totalling $400,000 to help to support both undergraduate students who are participating in a Trent Study Abroad program and Trent graduate students who hope to study and explore research opportunities in an international setting. The first bursaries will be awarded in the 2009/10 academic year through an application process coordinated by the TIP office.

“Study Abroad bursaries awarded in Jack’s name continue his legacy in the most meaningful way possible.” – Celia Dyer, Trent alumna who participated in Study Abroad experience in France and studied under Jack Matthews at Pearson College.

Past and Present Meet at Alumni House

Memories of almost 40 years of special times at the Champlain College Master’s Lodge were front and centre at Alumni House on November 15, 2008 when former Champlain College leaders, along with alumni and friends who had supported the Alumni House refurbishment campaign, were honoured at a special event. Over $250,000 was raised to restore and refurnish the former Master’s Lodge, as well as establish a permanent endowment fund to support future improvements to Alumni House. About 50 people gathered for the reception and luncheon, during which TD Insurance Meloche Monnex was honoured for their establishment of two student work internships, anchored at Alumni House.

“Being a varsity athlete at Trent University has

taught me so many important lessons about hard

work, who I am, and how far I can push myself.

These are lessons that will outlast my season.

Your support of varsity sport does more than

support athletics – it supports student athletes.

I am very thankful to have had this support during

the academic year. As a full-time student, athlete

and part-time employee at the PSB Wilson Athletic

Trent Experts Discuss Latest Risks to World’s Water

Inside Trent, an annual lecture designed to engage the community in the groundbreaking research taking place at the University, expanded in 2008/2009 with two events, one in Peterborough and the other in Toronto. On November 13, 2008, over 100 members of the Peterborough community turned out to hear three Trent experts discuss the topic of “Our Water; Our Future.” In Toronto, over 60 people, gathered at RBC Plaza on February 12, 2009 to learn about the new realities facing our world’s most precious resource. In Memory of Jane Dudas

Jane Dudas was a much admired and respected member of the Trent Board of Governors and University community. She started her volunteer contributions to the University in 1995 when she joined Trent’s

Development Committee. She was appointed to the Board in 1996 and served three terms until 2006, providing 10 full years of dedicated service, including a term as vice-chair. In 1999, the Dudas Award was established by Frank and Jane Dudas and is awarded to a first-year student who demonstrates high academic achievement and financial need. For all of her contributions to Trent, the University honours Jane, who passed away in June 2008.

Donor Impact 2008/2009

More than 200 students and faculty filled Gzowski College’s largest lecture hall on October 7, 2008 to hear Yale Sterling Professor and titan in the field of global politics and development studies, Dr. James C. Scott, present the inaugural David Morrison Lecture in International Development. Robust interaction between this leading figure in political science and the Trent community was much enjoyed by Professors David Morrison and Alena Heitlinger, who created the endowed lecture series in 2007 for exactly this reason.
