Message from Guy BurtonChairman of the Management Committee

The revenue of Ethias Insurance was more than € 3.8 billion in

2007, which is slightly up on 2006. The revenue in Non-Life rose

8.89% (+16% in Group Non-Life, +1% in Individual Non-Life). Life

dipped slightly by -2.25% (-8.7% in Group Life, +4.3% in Individual

Life).

The refunds and profi t participations awarded to our members

continue to rise. They went from € 131.8 million to € 152.2 mil-

lion. The receipts surpluses are € 167.2 million (€ 117.8 million

in 2006).

For many years we have been trying to explain the social and eco-

logical role of the company. Ethias has therefore committed itself

fully to the strategy of sustainable development.

In that regard a great deal has been accomplished. Ethias received

the Diversity Label from the Federal Ministers of Employment and

the Civil Service and signed the Walloon Diversity Charter. In that

context an awareness-raising day around Diversity was organ-

ized for the personnel. We launched an energy-savings plan for

our buildings and solar panels were installed on the roof of our

headquarters.

Sustainable management and sustainable development also fea-

ture in our products and services. For instance, we are the only

insurer to cover risks for a wind farm in the North Sea, and we

developed two types of consumer credit for the fi nancing of own

investment: the Eco-package Car and the Eco-Renovation Credit.

The essential self of a mutual insurance company? To be set up by

its members and to live for its members. We have translated this

philosophy in a slogan: “We think with you!” That means acting

for the welfare of our members and of our personnel. All these ac-

tions are summarized in our fi rst societal report*. With this report

Ethias now has a new instrument to position itself on three levels:

social, societal and ecological. We may also ask the question: “is

sustainable development possible without insurance and without

fi nancing?” Probably not. So our role is to offer the possibility of

assuming such risks.

In 2007 Ethias continued to apply itself to searching for products

and services that meet the expectations of its clients, groups as

well as private individuals: the new family insurance, the annual

travel cancellation insurance, the pilot project for the use of the

electronic identity card (e-ID).

Solidarity of GMFduring the January storms

In 2000 Ethias stood beside GMF and offered assistance in handling the cases of loss and

damage resulting from the severe storms that swept across France. In January 2007 Ethias

can in turn count on the aid of the staff of GMF’s Loss and Damage Department to process

the storm fi les under the best conditions.

During the second edition of the BeCommerce Awards 2007 the website

www.ethias.be receives a Silver Award in the business-to-consumer category for My Ethias.

Launch of the new Ethias Family Insurance

The Belgian Offi cial Gazette of 27 February 2007 published the Royal Decree

relating to easier access to law via the legal protection insurance. Ethias did not wait

for this announcement to review its Private Life Civil Liability product in which the legal

protection guarantee is mostly included.

Ethias buys Belstar from Dexia

Belstar belongs to the top 10 life insurers active via the insurance brokers’ network. The

acquisition by our group of Belstar, followed by the merger of Belstar with our subsidiary

Nateus, will bring the opportunity to reinforce our presence in the brokers’ network.

Ethias launches a pilot project for the use of the electronic identity card (e-ID) for the

protection of the online insurance portfolio. Via the e-ID the clients of Ethias will be able

to execute every transaction in their insurance portfolio with a high degree of security.

Diversity Label

Ethias is one of the 10 organizations to receive the Diversity Label from the Ministers of Employment

and of the Civil Service. Different fi elds of action were chosen in the creation of the Diversity Plan

2007-2009. Various aspects will be covered: work-life balance, training and communication around Diversity, improved career follow-up, …

Expo Devreux

Art and pleasure in the strings! Museums have been abandoned in favour of the supermarket.

A major sponsor of this cultural event, Ethias invites visitors to take a light-hearted stroll in a

«super-bazart» of art ... Pierre Devreux-style.

Ethias is main sponsor of the 3rd Quality Congress “Inspiring People” for the local

public authorities in Flanders. The starting point is the power of people to inspire.

Ethias received the 2007 Decavi Non-Life Insurance Trophy for its «Private Life Civil

Liability Insurance» (family insurance).

Ethias is main sponsor of the exhibition “Octave Landuyt Ricorso/Goetic”.

Construction of a wind farmin the North Sea

Ethias is actively involved in an ambitious and unique windmill project in the North Sea by

offering various insurance contracts. The project includes the construction of 60 windmills (of

5 MW) that will generate 1 000 GWh per annum, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of 600 000 inhabitants. After completion the project

should allow, ecologically speaking, an annual reduction of 450 000 tonnes of CO2 emissions

(or avoid the felling of 90 000 ha of wood).

Ethias Sports Day

A multisport day for the whole family to discover 20 different sport disciplines in a

party atmosphere with a free concert in the Ethias Country Hall Liège to cap it all.

Concert at La Monnaie

Ethias wanted to pay thanks to its public service sector clients … in a music way, with

a production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Royal Opera House in Brussels.

Fitch confi rms the A+ rating

The rating agency Fitch confi rms the A+ rating for fi nancial soundness. This rating was awarded for the fi rst time in 2005 to the mutual insurance associations Ethias Life and Ethias Common Law.

Ethias is partner of the 19th Walloon Heritage Day, of the Dinant Jazz Night, of the International

Festival of the French-speaking Film in Namur, the European Ladies’ Volleyball Championship and “Kamiel in vuur en vlam!” a fi re prevention

comic strip designed for children.

Ethias is partner of “On the Road”, an initiative that gives youngsters between the age of 18 and 24 the chance to take interactive driving lessons.

Ethias supports the “Night Without Accidents” in partnership with RYD

(Responsible Young Drivers). Ethias is also a structural partner of the RYD.

Declaration of fi re damagenow also possible in My Ethias

Our clients can now submit their fi re damage declarations in their protected space in My

Ethias. The entry of the claim is fully integrated in our databanks and is available 24 hours a

day. After Vehicle this is the second loss or damage declaration to be available online.

FIRST: Decavi Life Insurance Trophy 2007

After 2002 and 2005 the FIRST Account received its third Life Insurance Trophy from Decavi. The criteria that made the difference

are, among others, the yield and the clarity of the fi nancial information fi le. Belstar, new

acquisition of the group integrated in Nateus, for its part received two trophies

for its investment funds in branch 23.

Ethias Trophy

After Olivier Rochus in 2005 and Janko Tipsarevic in 2006, Latvian Ernests Gulbis

won the game against Kristof Vliegen during the third edition of the Ethias Trophy. This ATP Challenger Tournament has grown to become

the international men’s tennis event in Belgium.

Creation of the RENT range

With this product range clients can make investments and receive a regular income.

A simulation module for clients has also been placed on the internet. Via this simulator the

client is presented with the suitable “formula” according to his/her requirements.

Ethias launches its new travel cancellation insurance. This insurance covers all travel

for one year by members of the family living in the same house as the policyholder.

Ethias Bank launches the Eco-Renovation Credit

This product is designed as an incentive for energy-saving renovation of buildings.

The Mobility guarantee sees the light of day

As a mutual insurance association Ethias pursues no strict profi t motive. Its clients,

thanks to the direct contact, also enjoy fast and effi cient service.

Ethias is thus able to reinvest in constant improvement of its products and serv-

ices and to offer its clients advantageous rates, premium refunds and the best

coverage.

In its 2007 Management Report the Board of Directors proposed allocating more

than 152.2 million euros in profi t participations and premium refunds to groups

and private individuals.

That is precisely why Ethias offers the best service and the best coverage against

competitive prices.

A stakeholderr in the social economy

A mutual insurancee association does noot exclude the profi t

motive, but pursuess profi t solely in the innterests of its mem-

bers and employeess. A mutual insurer ppromotes the values

of solidarity and resspect for others.

Ethias has always aspired to make innsurance accessible

rather than excludinng coverage. In otherr words, Ethias aims

to apply insurance in its original sensee, namely solidarity.

Ethias remains a fi xxture in an economic landscape that is

prey to sudden fl ucttuations on the stockk exchange. And be-

ing a mutual insuraance company is alsoo synonymous with

delivering a good peerformance.

Multiyear Plan foor Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Ethias started an acction plan for Social RResponsibility within

its various activitiess. A multiyear plan waas approved in 2003

in this perspective. The Ethics Committtee guarantees its

implementation andd monitoring. To date the following initia-

tives have been broought to a successful conclusion:

• obtaining the 1stt Social Label for the Ethias

Home Insurancee (2003) - this label wwas extended

in 2006 for a further period of 3 yearrs

• creation of a soccial-ethical code,

• introduction of aa joint ethics committtee,

• development of an ethical and solidaarity-

based fund “Ethhico Boost”,

• creation of a codde of practice,

• creation of an investment code,

• obtaining the fi rrst Ethibel quality labbel for

the “FIRST pension savings plan”

• development of an ethical and solidaarity-

based fund in brranch 21 for groups,

• launch of MultiSSecurity editions withh the Ethibel label,

• obtaining the Diversity Label.

A mutual insurer

Since the legislator has recently permitted the merger by ac-

quisition between mutual insurance associations, a merger

is now planned between Ethias Common Law and Ethias Fire

to form a single association in IARD (property & casualty in-

surance). This merger will be put to the vote of the members

of Ethias Fire and Ethias Common Law at the Extraordinary

General Assembly to be held in the fi rst half of 2008.

A mutual insurance association is an alliance of persons who

agree to mutually insure themselves and to share the cost

of any sustained loss, damage or injury. To this end they set

up a fund that is replenished with their own contributions.

Under this formula each member is, at the same time, an

insurer and an insured party, and there is no capital stock

and therefore no shareholders to remunerate.

Taking out insurance with Ethias thus means that you buy

the necessary security for yourself, but you also contribute

towards the security of others and to the solidarity that is

the essence of insurance. Ethias regards its policyholders as

true partners, not merely as clients.

Besides Boost Ethico and the FIRST Pensions Savings Plan

Ethias also offers Global 21 Ethical. Boost Ethico is an ethical

and solidarity-based fund of branch 23, consisting of funds

recognized by Ethibel and/or Triodos. The FIRST Pensions

Savings Plan is the only product of this type bearing the

Ethibel Quality Label. Global 21 Ethical is an allocated fund

from brand 21 for the public service sector and bears the

Ethibel Quality Label.

In 2007 Ethias received the Diversity Label from the

Ministers for Social Integration and Work. Ethias is the only

enterprise in the banking and insurance sector with this

label, conferred for a period of 3 years. This label connects

with the introduction by Ethias of a Diversity Plan around

various projects, such as training in diversity, the adapta-

tion of premises for persons with a handicap, a “diversity”

announcement in vacant situations, adaptation of the inter-

The Ethias internet site (www.ethias.be) is a fully-fl edged

distribution channel.

The site is a pioneer, particularly with the personal space

“My Ethias”. Here affi liates can consult and manage their

insurances and submit a vehicle/fi re damage claim online.

2007 was again a record year for the internet site: there

were more than 5 million visitors. 1 139 000 quotes were

given and more than 47 600 contracts were taken out.

“My Ethias” accounted for more than 3.2 million contract

consultations and more than 833 000 visits. The e-newslet-

ter has more than 170 000 subscribers.

These fi gures continue to rise and reinforce Ethias’ position

as leader in online insurances!

A general insurance companywith a wide product range

In January 2000 Ethias opened up to everyone. Since then

the company no longer only offers insurance policies to

public sector employees and their families. Ethias, the third-

largest insurer in Belgium, is a general insurance company

with a wide range of products spread across the two main

branches of traditional insurance: Life and Non-Life.

In the Life branch the facilities include: the FIRST Account,

In October 2002 Ethias launched e-sante.be, a free health portal focusing on

current health issues, prevention and well-being. This portal, developed on the

initiative of GMF (e-sante.fr) and Ethias, also has ambitions to stand out at the

European level.

E-sante has become the leading health site in Belgium, with more than 750 000 vis-

its each month. 2 000 000 pages viewed and 135 000 subscribers to the e-letter.

Besides a weekly health magazine e-sante.be also offers medical guides, health

catalogues, tests, recipes, etc.

Natural insurer of public authorities

Ethias (Smap at the time) was founded in 1919 by repre-

sentatives of the public authorities to offer an answer to a

twofold concern: the need for solidarity in rebuilding the

country after the First World War and to offer insurance pre-

miums that were cheaper (up to 50 %) in comparison with

the rates applied by traditional insurers.

Ethias has always remained committed to the task of insur-

and school accidents. Around 5 000

groups make use of it: Flemish- and

In the context of an electronic docu-

ment management system the use

of the extranet is now increasingly

evolving towards a genuine means of

communication between insured and

A team of prevention specialists is

also available for public authorities

and businesses. These specialists can

always be called upon for step-by-

In 2006 Ethias Bank further developed its product range in order to meet as far

as possible the needs of the Ethias Insurance policyholders. In 2007 Ethias Bank

mainly focussed on the complementarity of its products with those of Ethias

Insurance.

In 2007 a campaign was developed promoting the savings account as a short-term

alternative to the FIRST Account.

The success of this campaign demonstrates, on the one hand, the need for short-

term savings products for Ethias policyholders and, on the other, the commercial

interaction between the savings account and the range of FIRST products.

In the range of consumer credits too,

greater cooperation was sought with

Ethias Insurance. Consumer credits

are now offered in 14 of the 39 offi ces

The bank for the public service sector

2007 was characterized by an intensifi ed cooperation between the bank and insur-

ance teams in the Group Life sector.

At organizational level the bank teams were reinforced by the Employee Benefi t

Consultants from the Life branch. The integration of these advisors makes it

possible for us to give the client an all-inclusive answer to questions concerning

investments, and this for a period of 1 week up to 30 years.

With regard to group insurance products, bank investment products and FIRST

Company products (branch 26) clients can now call upon the same team offering

them a total solution package.

In keeping with Ethias’ initiatives

around “sustainable entrepreneur-

ship and management”, 2 types of

consumer credit were developed

for the fi nancing of environmentally

friendly investments: the Eco-Package

for Cars and the Eco-Renovation

Credit.

The success of these products shows

that the Ethias client is far from insen-

sitive to this important societal topic.On a commercial level the emphasis

was on the further development of

short-term investment products. This

led to the successful launch of the

FIRST Company Short Term product

in branch 26. In addition to a capital

guarantee, this investment product

also offers a guaranteed minimum

return, plus a bonus on the end date.

Ethias Protection Plus was also

launched, offering clients the possibil-

Back in 1999, Ethiias forged a partnersship with AZUR-GMF,

one of the key playyers in the French insurance sector. Each

of the groups retaains its identity, but they work together

actively in areas ooffering effi cient syneergies and important

economic scale inccreases. Examples arre reinsurance, fi nan-

cial management aand claims.

The GMF Group, reference insurer ffor public serviceemployees

GMF takes the fundamental values of tthe mutual insurer to

Besides a comprehhensive range of conttracts and services in

Group has 4000 points of sale, nearly 6 000 employees

France (includding all subsidiaries), more than 3 million

clients, 5 milllion managed contracts in loss and dam-

age insurancce. More than 600 000 persons have a life

Nateus 2007:merger, innovationand good results

2007 was the year of the merger with Belstar, specialized in

life insurance. Belstar, which sold its products exclusively

through independent brokers, was purchased by Ethias in

early 2007 and merged with Nateus on 27 December 2007.

With this merger Nateus reinforced its position as a brokers’

company.

In 2007 the total premium receipts stood at € 379 million, of

which € 205 million in the branch Life and another € 174 mil-

lion in the branches Liability, Loss/Damage and Transport.

The fi nancial year closed showing a profi t of more than € 12

million. The balance total rose to more than € 2 billion at

the end of 2007. A staff of 453 employees guarantee an

enthusiastic support of the brokers’ network.

The Credit Cell was created to meet more effectively the ex-

pectations of the independent broker. Brokers can call upon

this Cell to fi nd solutions for mortgage loans, consumer

credits and investment loans. Ethias Bank is the preferred

partner.

In 2007 a new interactive web application was developed.

With this tool users can now input new policies and make

changes in their insurance portfolio. An evolution that bro-

kers particularly appreciate.

In early 2008 Nateus was the fi rst insurer to launch an in-

surance solution for the designated driver (Bob

driver). By so doing Nateus confi rms

only its innovative role in the insurance

landscape but, as a subsidiary of Ethias,

also contributes to providing solutions

for societal problems.

In 2007 the turnover of GMF in Loss and Damage rose to

1.35 billion euros despite the tariff reductions that were

regularly implemented over the past 4 years in Vehicle in-

surance. The receipts in the same period in Life Insurance,

generated by subsidiary GMF Life, were 1 167 million euros,

which is a 7% increase. Still in Life Insurance, GMF has for

three consecutive years offered the best returns on the mar-

ket, i.e. 4.55% on its most important contracts.

GMF is now part of COVEA, a strong mutual group, leader on

the French insurance market for private individuals,

with a turnover of more than 12 billion euro

and 10 million members.

Mutual companies in Europe

Ethias is at the hub of a European networ

of relations thanks to its membership of major

European associations representative of the mutual in-

surance companies. It played an important role in the merger

of these organizations in a single organization (AMICE), of

which it is a founding member. It works actively in actions

conducted to make the international and European authori-

ties aware of the particularities and the values of the mutual

insurers.

Together with other European insurers in the social econo-

my, Ethias has committed itself, among other things, to the

creation of a European Status for Mutual Insurers, a legal

instrument whereby it can develop its own activities on a

European scale.

LEGIBEL

LEGIBEL is the legal protection dispute

setttlement offi ce at the service of the

Ethhias policyholders. This separate system of managgement

is designed to ensure the best possible settlemeent for

confl icts of interest or differences of opinions that Ethias

poolicyholders may be faced with.

In order to achieve its goals, LEGIBEL has adopted sspecifi c

toools tailored to this kind of settlement procedure aand re-

fl eecting state-of-the-art dispute settlement techniquees.

LEGIBEL offers policyholders the opportunity to settle their

confl ict on the basis of alternative settlement proceedures:

arbbitration and mediation. Towards this end, it enlists the

aidd of accredited mediators who have received mediation

traaining from CIFORM (www.ciform.org).

Ouur processing procedures are based on a legal protection

me-line” whose stringent application makes its gener-

ally possible to avoid legal proceedings.
