Lt. GeneralJohn W. Rosa

Meet the Administration

President Second YearThe Citadel (1973)

LesRobinson

Athletics Director Seventh YearN.C. State (1965)

Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa was born in Springfield, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After gradu-ating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Mili-tary College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel Rosa was starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree

in business administration and was awarded a commis-sion in the Air Force.

A command fighter pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force.

Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange officer flying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in South Korea, Idaho, South Carolina, New Mexico and Georgia. He served as inspector general for Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and com-mandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in Sep-tember of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. He remained in that position until his retirement from active duty in November 2005. On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th president. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Com-mand and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. And he has stud-ied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Har-vard Graduate School of Education. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the De-fense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has flown the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircraft, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (’03), and a grandson, Mi-chael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the cur-riculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Ath-letics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson is in his seventh year as the Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and bas-ketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first six years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robin-son’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. Robinson has been faced with having to hire three football coaches during his tenure. The process in which he hired Ellis Johnson, John Zernhelt and current coach Kevin Higgins , fea-tured a coast-to-coast whirlwind tours of the entire Citadel family, and was received extremely well. He was successful in getting numerous people to talk about Citadel football months in advance. He recently hired basketball coach Ed Conroy, and administratively, has realigned the Athletics Department’s administration. During the past four years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. He hired the school’s first senior woman administrator, taken measures to revamp totally the department’s weight room, and is personally spearheading the football stadium project. The stadium project has entered the forefront in The Citadel Athletics community as the West Side stands have been torn down and rebuilding expected to be complete in August. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the South-ern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Confer-ence Coach of the Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach of the Year in 1979 and 1985. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Con-ference men’s basketball history to earn league coach of the year hon-ors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. As athletic director at N.C. State from 1996-2000, Robinson over-saw a department with an operating budget of $25 million and sent 11 teams to postseason play. During his final year, the department wit-nessed a $1.1 million surplus. In addition, the cumulative grade point average of athletes at the ACC institution exceeded that of the general student body. Robinson and the N.C. State family also witnessed the opening of the Entertain-ment and Sports Arena, a 19,700-seat facility which serves as the home of the Wolfpack men’s basketball program and the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League. Robinson earned a bachelor of science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965. The Robinson’s, who have main-tained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Ctiadel, have four children: Greg, Robby, Kelly and Barbara; and eight grandchildren: L.G. Robinson, Savannah Graves, Lily Graves, James Graham Boyd, Hugh Bissell Graves, Mary Emma Graves, Charles Simon Boyd and Samuel Robinson Boyd.

Assistant Coach First YearOhio State (2006)

Beginning his sixth season at The Citadel and fifth as head coach, Toby Simpson has the tennis program becoming a force to be reckoned with in the Southern Conference. Simpson continues to develop cadet-student-ath-letes into winning tennis players and winning teams. Under Simpson’s guid-ance, The Citadel has reached the quarterfinals (or further) in the Southern Conference Tournament in the past four consecutive seasons. The Bulldogs finished the 2006 campaign with a sixth place finish in the league as the Bulldogs featured two of the best players in the SoCon. James Eason finished the year as the only player in the SoCon to go undefeated in conference singles play, garnering All-SoCon Second Team honors. Eason paired up with Daniel Dossetor to bring home All-SoCon First Team honors as the two dominated doubles play throughout the year. Simpson’s teams excelled in the classroom as well as two Cadets - Eason and Nick Medica - were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team while Medica was named Academic All-American (Second Team). After graduat-ing, he finished school as the second highest cadet, completing four years with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Prior to the 2006 season, the Bulldogs posted two fourth-place finishes in the league’s final rankings. During the 2003-04 campaign, the Cadets started with an impressive SoCon record of 6-0. In his five years at The Citadel, Simpson has taken the Bulldogs from 11th in the SoCon to fourth, with great expectations for this year’s team. Along with the team’s success, Coach Simpson has had many team members gain individual honors on the courts as well. In 2004-05, he coached freshman Danny Dossetor to the First Team All-Southern Confer-ence team as well as receiving the SoCon Freshman of the Year Award. Along with Dossetor, freshman James Eason was tabbed Second Team All-SoCon, and teamed with Dossetor to claim a First Team All-SoCon se-lection in doubles. In 2003-04, under Simpson, senior Matt Stubbs was a First Team All-SoCon selection and senior John Williams was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, presented annually to one player in the conference and voted by all of the league’s coaches, as the player who demonstrates sportsmanship in all his endeavors. Additionally, Stubbs was also a First Team All-SoCon pick his sopho-more campaign in Simpson’s first year at The Citadel. During his senior year, John Williams was awarded The Citadel Brigadier Foundation’s Senior Athlete of the Year Award as the top senior cadet-student-athlete at The Citadel as voted on by his fellow seniors. Simpson stresses classroom perfection from his team as well. In three of his four years as head coach, tennis has led the men’s athletics in overall GPA. In 2002, ̀ 04 and ̀ 05, the tennis team achieved the honor as an NCAA/ITA All-America Team with an overall GPA of 3.2 or better, the best of 3.5 in `02. Simpson has coached 14 NCAA/ITA Academic All-Americans (overall GPA of 3.5 or better) with five athletes achieving perfect 4.0 GPAs. Along with the All-Americans, Simpson has had 20 team members on the South-ern Conference All-Academic Team and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Simpson is no stranger to success at the collegiate level, on and off the court. As a player at the University of Southern Mississippi, he garnered many athletic and academic awards. Simpson was a three-time All-Confer-ence USA selection while at USM and was a member of the first team in school history to reach the NCAA Tournament. He concluded his senior year with a final NCAA singles ranking of No. 52 nationally, the highest in school history. During his senior campaign, Simpson posted wins over the No. 1 and No. 7 players in the NCAA, respectively. Upon completion of his collegiate career, Simpson played profession-ally for a summer before returning to his alma-mater to begin coaching. During this time, Simpson played club tennis in Stuttgart, Germany, as well as many futures and money tournaments throughout Europe. After return-ing from Europe, Simpson joined the coaching staff at USM as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons. After completing work on his master’s degree, Simpson became an as-sistant coach at Penn State for one season. While coaching for the Nittany Lions, Simpson helped guide players to two All-Big Ten selections as well as

national rankings before coming to The Citadel. In addition to collegiate coaching, Simpson has taught and worked with many current collegiate players and na-tionally-ranked juniors, and is certified at the Professional Level of the United States Tennis Professional Registry (USPTR). Simpson has served as a hitting partner for some of the best players in the world, such as Jennifer Capriatti, Venus and Serena Williams, Conchita Martinez and Justine Hennin-Hardenne at The Family Circle Cup held in Charleston for the past four years. Simpson was selected to serve as a clinician at the NCAA Y.E.S. Clinic in May of 2003. As a player, Simpson won a USTA National Championship in 2003 in Las Ve-gas, Nev. He is very active in Charleston Tennis, South Carolina Tennis, and has been selected to the USTA High Performance Coaching Program. Simpson is married to the former Kelly Lasher of Weaverville, N.C. She is currently the Assistant Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator in The Citadel De-partment of Athletics.

Todd Wojtkowski enters his first season as an assistant coach at The Citade. Wojtkowski comes to The Citadel after spending two years on the nationally-ranked Ohio State Buckeye men’s tennis team. Wojtkowski, a native of Columbus, Ohio, spent three years playing at the University of Toledo before transferring to Ohio State. As a scholarship student-athlete at Toledo, Wojtkowski was a three-time Varsity T award winner, Team Leadership Award winner and team captain. Immediately upon transferring to Ohio State, Wojtkowski redshirted his senior year to come back and play another year, academically his first year of graduate school, as the Buckeyes won the Big Ten Championship and rose to a No. 5 national ranking. At Ohio State, Wojtkowski worked tirelessly on and off the court and was honored with several awards, in-cluding the Ohio State Scholar Athlete Award, the 2006 Senior Leader Award and the Men’s Varsity “O” Post-graduate scholarship. “I am extremely excited to have Todd join our program,” said Simp-son. “Todd is going to help enhance what is already becoming a solid pro-gram in the Southern Conference. His experience both on and off the court will be a valuable asset to the program and it speaks volumes of both our program and our school to be able to lure such a quality person to The Citadel.” Born Jan. 15, 1983, Wojtkowski earned his degree in middle child-hood education in 2006 at The Ohio State University. He currently resides in Charleston.

It was a season of close calls for The Citadel men’s tennis team as the Bulldogs closed out seven matches by a score of 4-3. The ‘Dogs finished the year with a 10-12 record, 4-5 in the Southern Conference. Sophomores Daniel Dossetor and James Eason shined for The Citadel, both receiving two All-Conference honors while Eason closed out the season as the only player in the South-ern Conference to go undefeated in SoCon play, going 18-3 over-all and 9-0 in the SoCon.

Dossetor received All-Conference honors in doubles (first team) with Eason, as well as singles (first team). Meanwhile, Eason received only Second Team All-SoCon honors in singles despite going undefeated in conference play in addition to receiving First Team doubles honors. The Bulldogs opened up the regular season with a trip to Con-way, S.C. to face Coastal Carolina and brought home a 5-2 victory to start the season off. After two weeks to prepare, the Bulldogs were thrown down the gauntlet as they traveled to Clemson, S.C. for the challenging Clemson Invitational. Facing the host No. 25 Tigers, the Bulldogs were swept in Tigertown, 7-0, as The Cita-del was only able to muster one doubles match win, an 8-6 deci-sion. Daniel Dossetor and Derek Jose posted that 8-6 victory over Clemson’s Sander Konig and Clement Reix.

In the second match of a doubleheader at the Clemson Invitational, the NetDogs dropped a 6-1 decision, this time facing the Trojans of Troy. Dossetor recorded the lone Bulldog point, scoring a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over Troy’s Irving Morales. Rebounding off that defeat, the NetDogs closed out the Clemson Invitational with a 4-3 win over Tennessee Tech, in a preview of what most the season would hold. The Bulldogs took the doubles point then edged TTU in the singles matches to hold on for the win. The match against Tennes-see Tech holds particular significance as sophomore James Ea-son was moved to No. 3 singles and, with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over Tennessee Tech’s Tiago Gilioli began a streak of wins that would be unmatched in the Southern Conference in 2006.

After a week’s break, The Citadel opened up conference play in Spartanburg, S.C., traveling to Wofford. In 2005, the Bulldogs edged Wofford 4-3, both in the regular season and in the SoCon Tournament and The Citadel continued that trend into 2006, taking their third consecutive 4-3 decision over Wofford.

Finally, after almost a month on the road, the Bulldogs returned to the friendly confines of the Earle Tennis Center for their first home match of the year, as they rolled over Davidson, 6-1. The NetDogs had started hot by this point, accumulating a 4-2 overall record and taking their first two Southern Conference contests. Immediately following that match, the Southern Conference honored James Eason for the first of many times in 2006, awarding him the men’s tennis Player of the Week honor.

The NetDogs were unable to keep their momentum going as Georgia Southern rolled into Charleston and put a halt to the Dogs’ three-match winning streak, taking the 4-3 contest from The Citadel. A shake up in the lineup awoke the ‘Dogs as The Citadel rebounded three days later with a 5-2 dropping of UNC Greens-boro.

Continuing their seven match homestand, The Citadel then kicked off a marathon of five matches in four days, starting off with host-ing the 49ers of Charlotte. The Bulldogs made a little bit of history as they recorded the program’s first ever win over Charlotte, a 6-1 defeat of the 49ers. Dossetor highlighted the match, recording his first win over a ranked opponent on the season with a dramatic straight set victory over No. 81 Roy Sichel. After winning the first

set 6-1, Dossetor fell down by as much as 5-2 in the second set before rallying to tie the set at six games apiece. Dossetor then ran the table in the tiebreaker, 7-3, to take the 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory over Sichel.

The Bulldogs kept their momentum rolling as they notched their third consecutive win of the season the next day with a 6-1 defeat of James Madison. Eason strolled to another victory with a 6-3, 6-0 win over JMU’s Bob Allensworth as he began to exert his dominance over opponents. The NetDogs’ momentum could not aid them against No. 54 Virginia Tech as they fell, 6-1, but Eason continued to shine. The Hokies’ No. 2 singles play-er, Alexei Sergeev, dropped down to No. 3 singles to attempt to disrupt Eason’s winning streak but the sophomore from Christchurch, New Zealand, made Sergeev another mark on the wall with a 6-1, 6-0 win. In the second match of a doubleheader that day, Ea-son notched his winning streak up to nine with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Richmond’s Matt Stillwagon, but the Bulldogs dropped the 4-2 decision as they closed out five matches in four days and a seven match homestand.

The Citadel left home briefly as they fell at Elon, 5-2, before re-turning to face the tough-minded Mocs of Chattanooga. Down 3-1 and with their backs against the wall, the Bulldogs were facing their fourth consecutive loss before igniting an improbable rally that propelled the Bulldogs to a 4-3 rally as Eason’s 11th consecu-tive victory earned him his second Player of the Week honor for the 2006 season.

Marquette came to town and used a rally of their own to notch the 4-3 victory but the most surprising aspect of the match was not The Citadel’s almost victory against the BIG EAST Confer-ence power, but the Golden Eagles would edge The Citadel in the Bulldogs’ fifth 4-3 decision of the season. However, the big loss came at No. 3 singles as Trent Hagan’s 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win gave him a claim that less than a handful of opponents could boast about: a win over James Eason. Eason’s winning streak came to a halt at 11 consecutive matches as Hagan delivered Eason’s first loss in close to a month. It would be the last time that Eason would lose a match in 2006.

A 6-1 thumping of Bucknell gave the Bulldogs some momentum heading into their trip to Hawaii, where they fought torrential rains more than they fought opponents. The Citadel was able to quickly sweep Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7-0, but was unable to face No. 14 BYU-Hawaii as torrential rains plagued the islands.

The rain followed the Bulldogs back to the mainland as The Cita-del would drop their final five matches of the season, including a 4-3 match at Appalachian State and a 4-1 match against the Col-lege of Charleston in the Southern Conference Tournament.

The Citadel bade adieu to three seniors - Ananda Sawmynaden, Nick Medica and David Lara - but welcomes back All-Southern Conference Honorees Dossetor and Eason in 2007.

The Southern Conference

The Southern Conference, which began its 86th season of intercollegiate com-petition in 2006, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premier Division I-AA football conference since earning that classification in 1981. The Conference cur-rently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradi-tion. League athletes have been recognized countless times on Verizon/CoSIDA Aca-demic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from the conference.SPORTS In baseball, Wake Forest advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Col-lege World Series in 1949. Demon Deacon second baseman Charles Teague was named the CWS Most Valuable Player. The Citadel made history in 1990 by becom-ing the first military school to make an appearance at the College World Series. The Bulldogs were joined that season at the CWS by current conference member Georgia Southern. One of the Southern Conference’s more famous baseball alums is Duke’s Dick Groat. The Blue Devil shortstop, who was also a basketball standout, was the con-ference’s Athlete-of-the-Year in 1951 and 1952. He went on to a 14-year career in the major leagues. In 1960, he was named the National League MVP after he led the league in batting with a .325 average for the World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Among Southern Conference alums to grace Major League Baseball fields have been Atlee Hammaker (East Tennessee State), Jeff Montgomery (Marshall) and Mike Ramsey (Appalachian State). Other SoCon players to go on to a career in the major leagues include Angels third baseman Dallas McPherson (The Citadel), and pitchers Britt Reames (The Citadel) and Ryan Glynn (VMI) who both pitched with Oakland in 2005. Arnold Palmer, perhaps the most famous golfer to have ever lived, competed under the Southern Conference banner at Wake Forest. He took medalist honors at the Southern Conference Tournament in 1948 and 1949 and was the tournament’s runner-up in 1950. Palmer was the medalist at the NCAA Golf Championships in 1949 and 1950. Women’s sports are relatively young in the league’s history. In 1992-93, the South-ern Conference celebrated its 10th Anniversary of women’s athletics. Furman golfer Dottie Pepper was named the Southern Conference Women’s Athlete of the Decade in conjunction with that event. Appalachian State’s Mary Jayne Harrelson won the NCAA Outdoor title at 1500 meters in 1999 and 2001. Most recently, Furman’s Brandi Jackson won the NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional in the spring of 2003.COACHES AND ADMINISTRATORS The Southern Conference has also been a breeding ground for some of college athletics’ most recognized coaches and administrators. Legendary basketball coach-es Adolph Rupp of Kentucky and Everett Case of North Carolina State both worked the sidelines in the Southern Conference. Lefty Driesell coached Davidson to three Southern Conference Tournament championships in 1966, 1968 and 1969. Former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins earned league Coach of the Year honors three times in the late ’70s and early ’80s while at Appalachian State and is in his first season as head coach at the College of Charleston. As coach men’s bas-ketball at Davidson Terry Holland was honored as the Southern Conference Coach of the Year for three consecutive seasons from 1970-72. J. Dallas Shirley, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, spent 21 years as the assistant to the commissioner and supervisor of officials in the Southern Conference. The legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant got his coaching start in the Southern Confer-ence as he guided the Maryland Terrapins in 1945. A legendary Southern Conference football coach is the late Frank Howard of Clemson, who guided the Tigers as a league member from 1940-52. The incomparable Howard won 69 Southern Confer-ence games which still ranks tied for fourth on the league’s all-time coaching victories list. The Southern Conference has been represented on the sidelines at five Super Bowls in recent years. Bobby Ross, who piloted the San Diego Chargers to the 1996 Super Bowl, was the head coach at The Citadel from 1973-77. Former Buffalo Bills head coach Marv Levy directed William & Mary from 1964-68. He was succeeded at William & Mary by Lou Holtz. William & Mary competed in the Southern Conference from 1936-77.
