Entering his sixth season at the helm of the Revolution in2007, Steve Nicol was named head coach of the teamon November 6, 2002, after serving as the interim head

coach for the final 21 games of the 2002 regular season andthe postseason. In each of his five seasons at the helm of theRevolution, Nicol has guided the club to the MLS EasternConference Championship game, and has three times led theteam to MLS Cup (2002, 2005 & 2006), including each of thelast two seasons. The Revs are one of just two MLS clubs toever return to MLS Cup in back-to-back season.

Nicol's hiring marked yet another impressive accom-plishment in the Scotland native's distinguished career. Duringhis playing days Nicol, 44, gained worldwide fame while play-ing for Liverpool in England's top division before moving on toplay for Notts County, West Bromwich Albion, SheffieldWednesday and Doncaster Rovers.

Nicol, who was born in the Scottish town of Troon,began his pro career at the age of 18 with Ayr United beforebeing signed by Liverpool in 1981. The £300,000 transfer feeremains the Ayr United club record.

While with Liverpool, Nicol made 467 appearances asa defender and midfielder and scored 46 goals. He was at theheart of a Liverpool side that won four English League Titles,three F.A. Cup Titles and the 1984 European Cup. In 1989, hisimportance to the team was honored when Britain's soccerwriters named him Footballer of the Year. Between 1984 and

1992 Nicol appeared 27 times for the Scottish National Team,and started for his country at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Nicol's coaching career began in 1995 when he wasnamed player/manager at Notts County. Four years later, hearrived in New England as a player/assistant coach with theBoston Bulldogs. In September of that year, he joined theRevs as interim coach for the final two games of the season,both of which were Revolution wins. He returned to theBulldogs as a player/coach for the 2000 and 2001 seasonbefore re-joining the Revs as an assistant coach prior to the2002 campaign.

Nicol was named the 2002 MLS Coach of the Yearafter leading the Revolution within a goal of the MLS Cup. In2003 and 2004, he led the Revs to within an extra time goaland a penalty kick shootout, respectively, of making theleague final. He coached the Revs to his second MLS Cupfinal in 2005, after winning the Eastern ConferenceChampionship with New England for a second time.

Nicol was also honored for his coaching excellence inAugust 2005, when he was chosen to lead the MLS Select XIagainst Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeau Stadium.

Nicol holds a USSF “A” coaching licence. In addition to his coaching duties, Nicol is also a guest

analyst for ESPN International. Nicol resides in Hopkinton, Mass., with his wife,

Eleanor, and the couple have two children, Michael and Katy.

Paul Mariner enters his fourth season as Steve Nicol'stop assistant coach in 2007. He has helped lead theRevolution to three straight MLS Eastern Conference

Championship games, as well as MLS Cup 2005 and MLSCup 2006.

Born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, Mariner is remem-bered by world soccer fans as one of the top center forwardsin English football in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Heearned 35 international caps playing for his country, and ledthe England attack in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He is the co-holder for the England National Team record for goal scoringin consecutive games (6).

After starting his professional club career with PlymouthArgyle, Mariner scored 97 goals in eight seasons for IpswichTown from 1976-84, before playing three seasons with ArsenalFC in London and finishing his English Leagues career withPortsmouth.

Mariner's many honors as a player include winning the1978 FA Cup Final with Ipswich Town, a game in which hewas named Man of the Match despite not being the goal scor-er, in the memorable 1-0 classic win over Arsenal. He wasalso a key member of the 1981 UEFA Cup-winning IpswichTown team. He scored for England against France in the 1982World Cup, and also scored in a qualifying match againstHungary on Nov. 18, 1981, a 1-0 victory at Wembley Stadiumthat put England through to the 1982 World Cup.

Mariner came to the United States in 1988 to coach theAlbany Capitals of the APSL, followed by a stint with theleague’s San Francisco Bay Blackhawks. Before joining theRevolution, Mariner was an assistant to former Revs forwardand current Harvard University head men's soccer coach JohnKerr, Jr. Mariner has also served as Technical Director for theFC Greater Boston Bolts, one of the top youth soccer clubs inthe U.S.

Mariner has worked as a color commentator on BBCNorth West broadcasts of the English Premier League and asa World Cup analyst on New Zealand television and ESPNInternational.

Mariner and his wife, Dee, live outside of Boston.

ASSISTANT COACH ASSISTANT COACH

Gwynne Williams is in his first season as the goalkeep-ers coach for the New England Revolution. He joinedthe Revolution coaching staff in February 2007 after 11

seasons on the staff of NCAA Division II soccer powerhouseLynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.

An NSCAA National Goalkeeping Instructor, Williams isa member of the USSF National Coaching Staff and holds aUSSF "A" coaching license.

A native of St. Helens, England, Williams has been onthe coaching advisory councils of the Canadian SoccerAssociation and Bermuda Football Association.

Williams earned his certificate of education fromNonington College of Physical Education in 1975, and com-pleted his bachelor of education degree at London Universityin 1976.

EQUIPMENTMANAGER

Brian Banfill is in his second season as the equipmentmanager of the New England Revolution. Banfill'sresponsibilities include organizing and maintaining the

team's uniforms, practice gear and equipment, and overseeingthe gameday equipment staff that assists in both the Revs’and visitors’ locker rooms and on the field. He also worksclosely with the technical staff on setting up and equippingtraining sessions both at home and on the road.

Banfill joined the organization as the Revs' equipmentmanager on Nov. 28, 2005 after three seasons working withthe team's volunteer gameday staff, the Revs Brigade. Hecontributed in many areas during this time, also working in thepopular Soccer Celebration pregame interactive entertainmentarea before joining the gameday staff where he worked boththe home and visitors' locker rooms.

Prior to joining the Revolution, Banfill worked for eightyears in the sporting goods retail industry. He is an avid icehockey fan and participates in several recreational leagues inhis spare time.

Banfill lives in central Massachusetts with his wife,Melissa, and their son, Kyle.

HEAD ATHLETICTRAINER

Wayne Penniman, P.T., A.T.C., CSCS , is in his firstseason with the Revolution as the team's head athlet-ic trainer. In addition to being a certified athletic train-

er, Penniman is also a registered physical therapist and certi-fied strength and conditioning specialist.

Penniman comes to the Revs from the Bancroft Schoolin Worcester, Mass., where he was the head athletic trainersince 2006, and the Clinton Irish Blizzard of the EasternFootball League, where he has had two stints as the head ath-letic trainer. Prior to his work at the Bancroft School,Penniman was the Director of Athletic Training Services atNashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, Mass., a staff physicaltherapist at South County Physical Therapy, and a seniorphysical therapist at Spaulding Neighborhood RehabilitationCenter in Wellesley, Mass.

He has completed work toward his master's degree inpost-professional physical therapy at Oakland University -where he was the head trainer for the men's soccer and base-ball teams during the 2002-03 academic year - and expects toearn his masters during the 2007 Revs season.

A fitness expert, Penniman also likes to ride motorcy-cles and work around his house in his spare time. Penniman,a native of Maynard, Mass., now lives in the suburbs west ofBoston with his wife, Leigh.

HEAD TEAM PHYSICIAN

Dr. Bertram Zarins has been the New EnglandRevolution's head team physician since the team'sinception in 1996. He is Associate Clinical Professor of

Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Chief ofthe Sports Medicine Service at the Massachusetts GeneralHospital.

Zarins also has been team physician for the NewEngland Patriots since 1982 and the Boston Bruins since1976. He served on the U.S. Olympic Committee SportsMedicine Council for 12 years and was Head Physician for theXIV Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in l984.

Dr. Zarins is an orthopedic surgeon and specializes inthe treatment of athletic injuries. He is an expert on the kneeand shoulder, especially injuries such as torn anterior cruciateligament (ACL), torn meniscus (knee cartilage), shoulder insta-bility and torn rotator cuff.

Zarins received his M.D. degree from the StateUniversity of New York, Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse in1967. He later completed an internship and assistant residen-cy program in general surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospitalin Baltimore. Additionally, Zarins completed the HarvardCombined Orthopedic Residency Program in 1973, beforeserving as Chief of Orthopedics at the US Naval RegionalMedical Center in Guam for two years. Following his militaryservice, Zarins completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine withDr. Carter Rowe and the Edward F. Cave Travelling Fellowshipin 1976.

Zarins is a former Chairman of the American Academyof Orthopedic Surgeons Committee on Sports Medicine, andis a member of the AAOS Committee on ArthroscopyEducation. He has also served on the Board of Directors ofthe International Arthroscopy Association and has been activein the Arthroscopy Association of North America, AmericanOrthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and other profession-al organizations including the FDA.

Recognized worldwide for his medical knowledge,Zarins has been president of the Latvian Medical and DentalAssociation and is a foreign member of the Latvian Academyof Science. Dr. Zarins is Honorary President of the SpainArthroscopy Association. Zarins received the DistinguishedAlumnus Award from Syracuse Health Sciences Center in1997 and has been on the editorial boards of several medicaljournals. He is currently a Consulting Editor for SportsMedicine for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

His 10 assists were the second-highest total in MLSbehind five players with 11. Played a career-high 2,834 min-utes to rank sixth in MLS. Was also ranked fifth in the leaguein shots on goal (33). 2004: Dorman bided his time as a squad player before estab-lishing himself as a "super sub" in the latter part of the cam-paign when 18 of Dorman's 20 regular season appearanceswere as a sub. Finished seventh on the team in scoring (twogoals, one assists, five points) despite playing just 365 min-utes.

2003: Led MLS in points per game (1.55) and goals per game(0.68) and tied Carlos Ruiz atop the goal-scoring chart with 15goals. Tied for third in MLS in points (34). Voted Revolution TeamMVP.
