Objective Figures of Merit for Front Projection Screens

Gain Dimensionless ratio of the measured luminance of the screen material (numerator) and a white diffuse standard (denominator)

Vertical ½ Angle

The angle where the initial signal has declined to 50% of its’ original on-axis value

Horizontal ½ Angle

The angle where the initial signal has declined to 50% of its’ original on-axis value

Diffuse Reflectance – Source

This ratio shows us how efficiently the screen distributes the projected image back into ambient surround. This dimensionless ratio of a luminance signal of the projection screen (numerator) divided by a luminance signal of a white standard (denominator).

Diffuse Reflectance – Ambient

This ratio tells us how efficiently the screen distributes the ambient illumination back to the projection screen viewer. The dimensionless ratio of illuminance signal of the projection screen (numerator) divided by the illuminance signal of a white standard (denominator)

Ambient Rejection Ratio

This ratio of the previous two measurements (Diffuse Source/Diffuse Ambient) gives a convenient figure of merit of how well the screen rejects ambient illumination.
