Top 200 continued on 25

While October con-jures up thoughts of ghosts and goblins for most

folks—and signals the begin-ning of Christmas shopping season for the more ambitious among us—here at Franchise Times headquarters it marks the unveiling of our annual Top 200 ranking of the country’s largest franchise companies.

After months of soliciting sales and unit count data from more than 1,000 companies, ranging from multinational household names to lesser-known franchisors, we offer readers a look back on what the prior year held for some of the largest players in franchising.

Without further adieu, then, we present our 2007 Top 200 ranking of the country’s largest franchisors based on worldwide system sales for 2006. Once again, not content with ranking

just the largest 200 franchi-sors, we’ve compiled our ‘Up & Comers’ ranking of the next largest 100 systems, too. And we do mean systems. ough

Quick-service restaurants may dom-inate the Top 200, but if you’re looking for franchisors with the largest number of systems

on the list, look for hotels. Lodging companies like Wyndham, Marriott, Hilton and InterContinental, among others, own several of the largest franchise systems.

It’s also worth noting that the vast major-ity of companies have only a single system in

the Top 200—franchisors with more than one company on the list represent only 61 systems.

Here is a list of the companies with the largest number of systems on the list.

Taco John’s International, Inc. Contacts: Brett Miller

Phone: 800 854-0819

E-Mail: [email protected]

Web site: www.tacojohns.com

Taco John’s new look supports their brand icons like Taco Tuesday® and Potato Olés®. Stone-accented buildings reflect the quality of the food inside. Comfortable dining rooms feature fresh salsa bars where patrons customize their favorite menu items. The re-imaging program for Taco John’s 425 restaurants has customers and operators raving. A contemporary new image, hometown hospitality, and bold fresh flavors, that’s The Fresh Taste of West-Mex®.

In describing the Up & Comers last year, we joked that since more than half had actually lost ground

on the ranking from the year prior, “up” was perhaps an inap-propriate choice of terms. Would

“Down & Outers” have been bet-ter? Hardly.

While these companies are a far cry from the McDonald’s’ of the world, who isn’t? And the claim of being one of the larg-est 300 franchise systems in the country, given the explosive growth of the industry, should be made with pride.

is year’s esteemed group of Up & Comers does our descrip-tor proud, with over half securing a higher ranking than last year, each making positive headway in their eff orts to follow eight of last year’s Up & Comer brethren to the big list.

In keeping with the dynamic nature of the Up & Comers, this year we welcome 24 new fran-chise companies to the ranking.

In 2006, these 100 franchise systems combined to gener-ate $11.1 billion in sales across 31,700 company and franchised units around the world, both fi g-ures slightly less under last year’s total. is is a heavily franchised lot with 96 percent of these units operated by franchisees, far more concentrated than the Top 200 systems. The Up & Comers operate 87 percent of all loca-tions here in the United States.

Relative to the Top 200, these 100 companies draw far more evenly from the various indus-try sectors, though restaurants still dominate here, too. e 28 restaurant companies accounted for 28 percent of last year’s Up & Comer revenue, though they

operate just 13 percent of total units. e quick service sector contributed most to the $3.2 bil-lion in restaurant sales, but fast casual concepts are coming on strong.

Companies catering to the country’s love of the automobile combined for nearly $1 billion in revenue at over 1,600 units pro-viding car sales, maintenance and glass repair. Franchise systems catering to homeowners—cov-ering everything from lawns, siding and painting on the exte-rior to plumbing, basements and closet designs on the interior—generated over $1 billion in sales last year at over 2500 almost-ex-clusively franchised units.

e record numbers of cruise ship travelers in 2006 certainly helped the three cruise travel franchise companies on the ranking as they rang up nearly a

half-billion in sales last year. And the variety of retail businesses selling all variety of consumer products contributed over $1.5 billion in sales to the mix.

—Paul Olson

Methodology questions on the Top 200 ranking

How does a brand qualify for the Franchise Times 200 ranking?

A franchise brand must meet one important qualifi cation: A minimum of 20 percent of the company’s total units must be operated by franchisees.

What are systemwide sales?Systemwide sales consist of

the total 2006 sales of the brand from both company and franchi-see-operated stores. For example, the systemwide sales of Pizza Hut include the sales from all of the restaurants in the entire system—both company and franchised.

In the FT 200 list, more than one company has the same sales, but are ranked dif-ferently. How do you decide who is ranked fi rst?

In the event of a tie in the systemwide sales of two or more companies, the company with the most units ranks highest.

My company’s revenue is greater than what is shown on the ranking.

is may be due to the fact that your company may have other operations not directly related to franchising. In the Franchise Times 200 ranking, we tallied only the annual sys-

temwide sales derived from the business operated by the franchi-sor and its franchisees.

My company should qualify and did not show up on the list. Or, my fi rm is listed, but the number of units or sales esti-mates are not accurate.

Two things may have hap-pened. First, we may have neglected you simply by acci-dent or your company may have ignored our repeated pleas for data. Secondly, if you did not help us out, we estimated the sales. We may have estimated high or low. Let us know next time!

How did you pull all of this data together?

We had our crack research team led by Paul Olson iden-tify the franchise companies that might qualify. The team contacted companies to find the information or located it on the Internet and through 10-Ks, annual reports or Web sites. ey then went to work calling com-panies to confi rm the data.

Franchising is like golf...

ranchising is a crowded field. Before you can bring

franchisees through your door, you have to help them

over an enormous hurdle: trust. They won’t sit down to

consider your franchise until they know that yours is a stand-up

organization.

That’s why the Fair Franchising Seal is so important. It’s a clear

sign that says integrity. Fair play. And commitment to a business

model in which all players win.

The Fair Franchising Seal comes from only one source, the

American Association of Franchisees & Dealers, an independent

trade association dedicated to promoting collaborative franchise

cultures that embrace equitable franchising practices. As an

objective third-party, we’re uniquely qualified to review your

franchise’s practices, policies and contracts. If your organization

meets the standards required for fair franchising, the AAFD can

honor you with credibility -- a Fair Franchising Seal that helps you

stand out among your competitors.

Visit www.aafd.org/golf to learn more about the AAFD and Total Quality Franchising. Then take a step towards Fair Franchising Seal accreditation by calling Bob Snelling at: 800-733-9858 Ext. 123 or email: [email protected]

“Earning the AAFD Fair Franchising Seal gets the attention of our franchisee

prospects and validates our franchise culture that fosters a genuine working relationship

between us and our franchises.”Terry L. Kline, Senior

Vice President Franchise Development Settle Inn

and Guest House Franchise Systems LLC

numbers of franchisees, some large public companies and other single-unit entrepreneurs, all contributing mightily to the sales and unit counts shown here.

e economic environment in 2006 was not nearly so tur-bulent as it is right now, though it wasn’t without it’s uncertain-ties and concerns. Economic growth was relatively strong last year, with GDP growth of 3.3 percent, slightly ahead of 2005. e fallout of irresponsible subprime lending—and borrow-ing—had yet to materialize and many homeowners continued to tap their home equity for discre-tionary spending. is helped to buoy consumer sentiment despite meager wage growth, and Americans spent $9.2 trillion on goods and services, growing con-sumer spending at a healthy 3.2 percent rate in the process.

Of that, the Census Bureau estimates that $4.3 trillion went to retail and food service pur-chases, those made at the types of businesses that dominate fran-chising. Compared to 2005, this wasn’t robust growth, and con-cerns about rising gas prices and stalling home values began to increase. Average gas prices began and ended 2006 at around $2.20 per gallon, but jumped a full dollar higher during the summer months.

Against this backdrop, the companies of the Top 200 man-aged collective worldwide sales of nearly $445 billion, an impressive 6.4 percent increase over 2005. Unit growth for these compa-nies was not nearly so robust, however, with the 5,879 addi-

tional company and franchised locations up a mere 1.5 percent over 2005. e Top 200 compa-nies actually shed domestic units last year, counterbalancing con-tinued global expansion by the multinationals to the tune of 6,500 additional foreign loca-tions. Unlike the prior year’s heavily franchised-led growth, unit development in terms of company versus franchised loca-tions was far more balanced last year.

The Top 200 retains 184 companies from last year, 81 of which improved their rank-ing along with 18 that held pat and 85 that edged down. e 16 companies new to the Top 200 are evenly split between those that graced the Up & Comers list last year and those that are completely new to the ranking. All-in-all, franchise-operated units continue to outnumber company-operated units by a ratio slightly better than 4 to 1.

In terms of industry rep-resentation on the Top 200, restaurants again reign supreme. Despite the myriad problems faced by the casual dining sec-tor last year, the 71 Top 200 restaurant chains accounted for $188 billion in sales, a 7-per-cent increase over 2005. The 119,000 domestic restaurants they operated at the end of last year accounted for about 20 per-cent of all restaurants opened in the United States. Still, nearly 30 percent of these companies’ restaurants serve customers over-seas, and 83 percent of those locations belong to the fi ve big-gest restaurant brands.

e quick-service sector can take credit for much of the increase in restaurant sales, benefiting as it has from con-sumer anxiety, in addition to rapid international expansion. McDonald’s reported systemwide sales growth of 7 percent across the globe in 2006 and Yum! Brands’ KFC chain expanded heavily across India and China. A total of 17 fast food compa-nies on the ranking had sales in excess of $1 billion last year.

Not surprisingly, sales growth was swiftest nearer the other end of the ranking. Zaxby’s increased sales some 40 percent last year as it added half again as many units. Buff alo Wild Wings managed to grow sales over 30 percent in 2006, rewarding sharehold-ers with 60 percent returns in the process. And bad-boy-of-the-sandwich-set Jimmy John’s increased its unit count by more than 100.

While restaurants gener-ated the most sales, the 41 hotel chains on the Top 200—with a combined 20,000 domestic and 4,000 international locations—generated the most sales growth. Smith Travel Research estimates that domestic hotels managed to raise rates some 7.4 percent on average last year, at nearly twice the rate of infl ation. is helped the industry to grow domestic revenues to just under $100 bil-lion last year despite occupancy rates that were essentially fl at.

e ability of hotels to suc-cessfully take such significant pricing is the function of a few variables, including continued business traveler demand and the falling dollar. Smith Travel Research’s Vice President of

Global Development Jan Freitag points to healthy midweek group and business travel and strong weekend leisure business as rev-enue drivers for the lodging industry. Additionally, he cites the role the weakening dollar has played in attracting European tourists to America for relatively cheap vacations.

e ranking’s retail compa-nies managed collective sales of $76 billion last year led by the No. 2-ranked 7-11 chain, opera-tor of some 25,000 international convenience stores. Five retail chains on the ranking—Ace Hardware, Matco Tools, The Athlete’s Foot, Cartridge World, and Play It Again Sports—boast 100-percent franchised systems.

e catchall group of compa-nies combined in the “All Other” industry category includes fran-chisors from all corners of the economy. While these businesses generated just 7 percent of all Top 200 sales last year, they col-lectively account for one in fi ve Top 200 units and are respon-sible for spreading the franchise model into new and evolving economic sectors.

The healthcare sector may not spring to mind in relation to franchising, but a number of Top 200 companies are taking advantage of aging demograph-ics and the growing demands on our healthcare sector by franchis-ing elder care solutions, medical staffi ng services, pharmacies and other health and fi tness concepts. Numerous companies have found niches tending to the vari-ety of services demanded by our ever-growing commercial and residential building supply.
