FACTS 2006-2007South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has a proud heritage of excellence in preparing graduates to serve

as leaders in the professions of engineering and science. The university provides graduate and undergraduate degreesin science, engineering, and interdisciplinary sciences.

There are 16 academic departments organized into two colleges. A total of 30 degree programs in engineering andscience are offered at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels.

Our students, in combination with an exceptionally talented faculty and great support from the community, providean exciting environment for education excellence.

RAPID CITY AND THE BLACK HILLSSouth Dakota School of Mines and Technology is located in Rapid City, the state's second-largest city. The city of

60,000 is the regional center for health care, shopping, banking, and other services, and is a major tourist destinationbecause of its proximity to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Badlands, and other attractions.There are caves, mountains, streams and lakes, and a vast variety of rocks, minerals, wildlife, and plant life. The Badlandsrepresent some of the world's greatest fossil resources as well as serving as an outdoor laboratory for the School ofMines.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENTSouth Dakota School of Mines and Technology embraces research to solve problems of industry, the military, gov-

ernment agencies, and to generate economic development in Rapid City, the Black Hills, and the state of SouthDakota.

FY 05 RESEARCH FUNDINGApproximately 50 School of Mines faculty members and researchers received 98 research awards totaling $12.7 mil-

lion during the 2005 fiscal year. The funding came from many different agencies, including the Army ResearchLaboratory, Air Force Research Laboratory, National Science Foundation, NASA, U.S. Department of the Interior, theState of South Dakota, and more.

HARDROCKER FOOTBALLDR. CHARLES RUCH PRESIDENT OF SDSM&T

Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of theSouth Dakota School of Mines and Technology on July1, 2003.

Ruch holds master's and doctorate degrees in educa-tion from Northwestern University and a bachelor'sdegree in chemistry from The College of Wooster(Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Mines, Dr. Ruchserved as President at Boise State University for 10years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years at VirginiaCommonwealth University, first as an associate deanand dean, and as provost and vice president. His firstuniversity assignment came at the University ofPittsburgh, where he was a faculty member anddepartment chair.

An active participant in higher education organizations,Dr. Ruch has chaired the Urban and MetropolitanUniversities Committee for the American Association ofState Colleges and Universities. He also has served onthe presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, andWestern Athletic conferences, and as chair of theWestern Interstate Commission for Higher Education.

Dr. Ruch's professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education,the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of StateUniversities and Land Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for TeacherEducation. Dr. Ruch has written and edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters,and has delivered Congressional testimony.

In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to makethose communities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially whenit comes to economic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expert-ise to build an even brighter regional economic future. Since joining Mines, Dr. Ruch also hasopened lines of communication with the community through a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strate-gic planning process, and created numerous partnerships to improve Mines, the community, thestate, and the region.

Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children,and three grandchildren.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

DAN KRATZERDan Kratzer will enter his second season as Hardrocker head coach this

fall. He was selected as head coach after five seasons as receivers coachand assistant head coach at Kent State University in Ohio.

Kratzer spent six seasons as head coach at Lindenwood University inMissouri from 1995-2000, where he guided the team to its first ever NAIAplayoff game in 1998. He served as head coach at Hastings College inNebraska, from 1990-1994, where he won conference championships in1991 and 1992, and guided the team to three NAIA playoff appearances. Hehas had additional experience as an assistant at Miami (Ohio) in 1986, as thehead coach at Ohio Northern University in 1984 and 1985, and as an assis-

tant at Indiana University in 1983.A native of Lathrop, Missouri, Kratzer received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Missouri

Valley in 1971, and earned his master's degree in education from Central Missouri State University in1976. He was selected in the 8th round of the 1972 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and moved to theKansas City Chiefs in 1973. He served in 1982 as the administrative assistant for Coach Bill Walsh andthe San Francisco 49ers summer camp.

He and his wife Suzanne have two grown children, daughter Danielle and son Reggie, who played forhis father at Lindenwood. They are proud grandparents of Danielle's daughter Reaghan.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/OKLAHOMA '69FIRST SEASON AT MINES

LONNIE MESSICKAfter the 2004 season and being responsible for coaching the leading tack-

ier on the Kent State University, Defense coach Messick was called to duty totrain a military unit in Belgium, Congo. After six months extended duty he isback coaching as Defensive Coordinator here at the South Dakota Mines.Coach Kratzer says he is glad to have such an addition to our staff, and willbring the type of discipline, intensity and most of all long term commitmentthat our players here so deserve.

His coaching stops include Kent State, Hargrave Military Academy, MarineMilitary Academy, Naval Academy and Bowie State University.

In addition, Messick has coached numerous interservice teams at U.S. Marine Corps bases, includingPearl Harbor, Hawaii (1977-79); Camp Pendelton, California (1981-82); and Parris Island, South Carolina(1983-84). He retired from the Marine Corps in 1997 as a Lieutenant Colonel following 28 years in theservice. Messick graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in educa-tion. He and his wife Virginia reside in Rapid City. Their family includes daughter Jessica and son Scottand his wife Deirdre and twins Jake and Matt, and daughter Caroline.
