HELIO D’ANNACoach Helio D’Anna or simply Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world) begins his fourth season as head coach of the LMU soccer program on the heels of last season’s banner year and the best season in school history.

In 2005 the Railsplitters captured their second ever GSC Championship and were ranked among the top four teams in the NCAA South Region at the end of the year. The Lady Railsplitters also advanced to the NCAA South Regional Tour-nament for the second consecutive year to defend their 2004 crown. Although the LMU women were defeated in the semi-finals, the team layed the foundation for a big start in their new endevors as a member in the NCAA Southeast Region and the South Atlantic Conference in 2006.

A product of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program. While with the Bulldogs, D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. In addition, Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match and finished ranked No. 3 in the country in 2001.

D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil and coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil, as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer back-ground also includes having worked as a coach and instructor at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-to-back world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and Cincinnati-Brazil Soccer.

D’Anna now possesses an overall winning record of 167-95-16 in his collegiate career as a head coach (132-76-13 with the men and 35-19-3 with the women).

Coach D’Anna is part of the Olympic Development Program as a coach in the state of Ken-tucky. He and his wife, Debbie, reside in Barbourville, Kentucky.

MATT AKINSMatt Akins, a native of Lisbon, New York, and graduate of LeMoyne College, enters his second year with the Lincoln Memorial University soccer staff.

Last season, Akins contributions of time and effort were instrumental in help-ing the Lincoln Memorial University men’s and women’s soccer teams capture the Gulf South Conference Championships, and in helping the women reach the NCAA Regional Tournament for the second consecutive year.

Following four years of collegiate soccer and a bachelor’s degree in psychol-ogy from LeMoyne College, an NCAA Division II institution in Syracuse, New York, Akins worked as an assistant soccer coach at the University of Kentucky

where he also received his master’s degree in sports management.

His responsibilities included assisting with individual and team daily workouts, monitoring the academic progress of the soccer athletes and various other daily duties. “It’s great adding Matt to the family,” says Coach D’Anna. “He is a hard worker, a student of the game and someone who is eager to pro-duce. I know the players will benefit from his coaching skills, his experience and his willingness to sacrifice for them. He’s a nice final touch to the staff and someone who brings a lot to the table.” Akins additional coaching experience includes working with the Bluegrass Soccer Club in Versailles, Kentucky, and with the Olympic Development Program in the state of Kentucky.

As a collegiate athlete, Akins competed in the Northeast-10 Conference from 1998 to 2001, one of the strongest leagues in the nation. He has also traveled throughout England competing against various clubs and was a member of the Adirondack men’s open soccer team in the 2000 Empire State Games.

ROBERT MACNEILL

Coach MacNeill begins his third season with the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer program as graduate assistant coach while he pursues his M.B.A. Coach MacNeill hails from Scotland in the United Kingdom, and spent four years playing a major role in the soccer program at the University of Glasgow. MacNeill played his first three years at one of the strongest colleges in the United Kingdom; unfortunately, during his senior season; a severe injury ended his playing career. The University of Glasgow and the Scottish Football Association guided him through his youth qualifications in soccer. He has also

completed and gained his youth D license with the USSF, obtaining national status. MacNeill spent the 2003-04 season guiding Glasgow University U19s, along with Head Coach Raymond Farrelly, to a top three finish in the West Scotland Youth level, an accomplishment in Glasgow Univer-sity’s first season competing for the championship. Playing amateur soccer in the west and central portions of Scotland has given MacNeill a great deal of experience at the club level as well. Coach MacNeill has helped the program both by developing play-ers as well as finding talent from the United Kingdom. He is also the first coach to be given a scholar-ship in the United States through Firstpoint Scholarship Agency based in the United Kingdom. “Bob is a veteran coach and knows the ins and outs of our men’s soccer program,” states Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “He spent the summer doing clinics in Scotland and is ready and excited to start another great season.”

CAMILA MOURAGraduate Assistant Camila Moura is a native of Campo Limpo Paulista, Brazil, and enters her second season with the Lady Railsplitters.

Moura played soccer while attending the University of Campinas, Bra-zil, where she received a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She recently coached soccer at the University of Campinas as well as Gua-rani Football Club, one of the premiere women’s soccer clubs in Brazil. She also works for Datafolha, the official statistics compiling company for the professional soccer teams in Brazil.

“CP” as Camila is known, is pursuing a master’s degree in education at Lincoln Memorial Uni-versity. The nickname comes from the abbreviation of her hometown.

“It’s exciting to have “CP” working with the ladies,” said D’Anna. “Camila has stepped right in and has become a big part of our program. The players relate well to her, and Camila is an extremely intelligent and dedicated young lady that we are thrilled to have.”

Moura also has a strong background in Futsal which is the international version of indoor soccer. She has played the sport in all levels including for clubs such as Parmalat Jundiai FC and Internacional FC from Campo Limpo Paulista.

LMU Athletic Director Jay Nidiffer congratulates the Lady Railsplitters after winning the 2005 Gulf South Conference Championship in Pensacola, Florida.

2006 LADY RAILSPLITTERSEASON OUTLOOK

As we enter a new era in college athletics, the women’s soccer team will have several adjust-ments to make. Important players have graduated,we will compete in a new conference and a new tough region is ahead of the Lady Railsplitters. There will be a slim margin of error for our women since they will not be eligible to compete for a conference championship. That means every regional game will be important in the effort to qualify for nationals for the third year in the row.

With all this pressure and expectations ahead of us, all players and the coaching staff have done the right things to prepare for the fall, and to make 2006 a year to remember. Our

spring conditioning and training was very de-manding. We also had a strong show in the spring games going undefeated despite playing a num-ber of Division I teams. This summer, we have had a record number of players participating in soccer leagues (W-league and the WPDL, as well as various adult leagues in the USA and abroad). We also set a tough conditioning program for the players to follow in the summer. As it has been in the past years, we have also brought in a very strong recruiting class that will challenge the re-turnees and raise the level of the team.

We will be solid in every position and will have a lot of scoring power in the roster. Our defenders will be athletic and aggressive and our posses-

sion will be a strong point as usual. We return eight starters from last year although several new players will contend to start. The positions considered “up for grabs” will be fought for by returnees and incoming freshmen. The healthy internal competition will make everyone better. We also continue to become a seasoned team, having now four seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores, and seven freshmen (almost 50% of upperclassmen and underclassmen). Our new leaders have tremendous charisma and personality and will carry on our tradition of leadership.

Our schedule will also include new competition, and new rivalries will be established. Ca-tawba, Carson Newman, Mars Hill and Tusculum are among well-known top opponents we will play. USC Upstate, Columbus State, Clayton State and Lander will also be tough games. Salem International, Newberry, Presbyterian, Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate are certainly among teams that will challenge us as well. All in all, our women will have very few (if any) easy games. It’s a strong schedule from top to bottom.

Maintaining high academic standards has become a tradition. Once again we start the year with a high team GPA (around 3.4), and one of our goals is to make the NSCAA team aca-demic award.

Our supportive coaching staff is ready to take it to the next level after a year of experience under their belt. We are a well oiled machine!

Anyone looking at all of the above has to agree: there is plenty to be excited about. Soccer is never a predictable sport but one thing is for sure. Anyone coming out to watch the Lady Railsplitters will enjoy the style of play, the effort and the quality of the players.

Let it all begin!

2006 RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOKOur men seem to have amassed a number of broken records in the past few years. However, an unfulfilled goal remains: qualifying for the NCAA National Tournament. We have had close calls in the past two years. In fact, much to the surprise of the nation, our men missed the past two cuts. And of course things will not be any easier in 2006: since we are changing conferences, we will not be eligible to compete for a conference championship. That makes the regular season and the regional games that much more important. That will be our ticket to make it to nationals and we will have a very slim margin of error. But the Railsplitters are ready; all you need to do is look into their eyes.

All through the spring our men laid the foundations for this fall. They conditioned, lifted, got faster and stronger, as well as more eager to produce. With the loss of key players, the returnees took up the challenge to fill shoes and made no excuses during the spring matches. In fact, we went undefeated despite playing several Division I opponents. Our players also joined a number of PDL teams to play for this summer, as well as adult leagues in the USA and abroad. They have followed a tough conditioning program through the summer and now return fit and ready to fly. On top of it, we brought in an incredible recruiting class, possibly the best in the history of the program.

Our roster will be loaded with talent. In fact, we will be at least two players deep in every position with possibly three players being able to become starters in some positions. We are also going to be very balanced in terms of experience, with four seniors, five juniors, seven sophomores, and six freshmen. We will also have four redshirts that will raise the level of practice every day. The leadership will be a strong aspect as well, and we will have not only two strong captains, but also several strong leaders. No doubt about it, it is hard to point out a weakness in this year’s team. Perhaps the only unanswered question in the roster will be how to solve the puzzle of choosing starters. Although we will have eight returning starters, we could easily have an entire new team on the field. That is really not a problem but a great dilemma to have! Our schedule will also include new teams and new rivalries will be established. Catawba, Carson Newman, Barry University, Christian Brothers, and Tusculum are among well known top opponents to be played. West Virginia Wesleyan, Salem International, Shepherd University, and the University of Charleston will also be tough games. Newberry, Presbyterian, and Mars Hill are certainly among teams that will challenge us as well. In fact, no team can be overlooked this year. The men will face a tough schedule and will embrace the challenge that comes with it.

We have also to tackle the academic challenge that comes in playing and traveling. It is an important goal of ours to repeat as NSCAA team academic award recipients. And we start the year on a good spot: our team GPA is above 3.0 to begin with.

Our support coaching staff is also experienced and competent. We are a well oiled machine!

Without a doubt all that could be done to ensure a successful season has been done.

Let it all begin!

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us

we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 109th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2005 enrollment of approximately 2,802 students and 96 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 31st year of ath-letic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba Col-lege, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became neces-sary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Ap-palachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s bas-ketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s

golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women’s soc-cer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal art colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Divi-sion II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA tournaments. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University became the league’s newest member. The league membership now includes Carson-New-man College in Jefferson City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC; Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC; Newberry College in Newberry, SC; Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC; Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University in Wingate, NC.
