Tave Lamperez The St Charles Canoe Club has something to smile about! The 2006 Current Buster and Aluminum Nationals was a great success. We had 95 participants, most of them racing on both days! We had 8 different states represented! It was a busy two days in the Fox River in St Charles, IL. Not often in northern Illinios can one have two wonderful days of 70+ degree temps and calm winds on the first weekend of May. We really could not have had better race conditions. The weekend of races had three distances. The National Championship Aluminum races had the 28 competitors (14 Aluminum canoes) paddle a full 15 miles with 7.5 miles upstream and 7.5 miles downstream in a two-lap pattern. That distance took over 2 1/2 hours to complete. The other USCA events were 9.5 miles of a single loop. The recreation classes did a single loop of 6 miles in length. We had over 20 club members helping out in the event. The volunteers from the Club were outstanding! We put on a professional race and the lunch for participants and volunteers was outstanding!!!! Thanks to the leadership of Karl Teske, Steve Conlon, and Jennie Quill we had all areas covered. Your Race Chairperson, Tave Lamperez, got help from everybody this year. Aluminum Nationals / Current Buster

Notes from Gareth Stevens on the Aluminum raceTave Lamperez and I expected Rocky Caldwell & Dale Burris to be strong, but it surprised me how strong! Rocky and Dale quickly established a lead and put time on us all throughout the race.

Josh Quintel & Griffi n Williams from Michigan, whom we had seen last year in Wisconsin, and again at Nationals, got off to a very impressive start - those boys have some good sprint speed. Although they couldn’t keep the pace they hit at the start, they nonetheless showed huge improvement over the previous year and fi nished with a fi ne time.

We had quite the battle with Doug Berg & Greg Zophy, and after we fi nally got clear of them after the start, they kept coming back. It was only our wave that fended of attack after attack over the last three to four miles.

The teams we envied most, however, were Cliff & Casey Rickey and Doug Pennington & Jim Short, who rode each other for the whole race – and kept well out of our reach.

I could fi nd very few photos from Saturday’s races (the Aluminum Nationals and ten of the Current Buster classes). Sunday’s pick was somewhat better, with a nice collection from Rich Hodgkins, (see photo to left and the next pages).
