The Steelville High Schoolvarsity boys’ basketball teamhad another fine season in2006-07. The Cardinals fin-ished with an overall record of17-9 and went 7-3 inGasconade Valley Conference(GVC) play, earning a share ofthe conference title.Highlights of the season

included winning the champi-onship of the ValleyTournament and finishingthird in both the Linn andOwensville tournaments. Theteam earned a third seed in thedistrict tournament, but lost inthe opening round.The Cardinals averaged 54

points per game this season,while giving up an average of51.8 points per game.The Cards put five seniors—

Brandon Martin, MarkHammonds, Nathan Booker,Heath Turnbough and KrisChambers—on the floor thisseason. They were joined onthe squad by juniors StevenHille and Grant Oaker.Three members of the team

were selected to the GVC all-conference team at the end ofthe season. Picked for thesquad were Turnbough, Hilleand Booker, who was namedthe league’s most valuableplayer.

Hille led the team in scoringand rebounding with a total of455 points and 212 rebounds.He averaged 17.5 points pergame. Booker was second inscoring with 311 points, whileTurnbough was second inrebounding with 128.Booker led the team in

assists with 142, whileTurnbough had the most stealson the season with 46.Chambers led the teamwith 42three-point field goals on theseason and Booker was best atthe free-throw line, shooting 75percent.The varsity Cardinals were

coached this year by SteveBoeh.The JV Cardinals, who were

coached by Tim Winkle, fin-ished the year with a record of7-12.The JV were led this year by

freshmen Ethan Farr andJacob Becker, who averaged12.4 and 11.2 points per gamerespectively. Nathan Rice hada 6.3 points per game average,while Aaron Mahurin averaged4.1, Travor Garrison 2.6 andDillon West 1.9.Other members of this

year’s junior varsity teamwere: Jason Wangson and TGalbraith.

The 2006 Steelville Middle School girls had a mixed season ofresults this school year. The eighth grade girls finished with amark of 4-10, while the seventh grade girls were 7-2.“The girls worked hard this season,” said Coach Sheila Becker.

“I saw a lot of improvement in their fundamentals and their teamplay. I was proud of both teams and I wish the eighth grade play-ers a successful high school career.”The SMS eighth grade girls started off the season with three

wins, but then lost eight games in a row before closing out theseason with one more win and two losses. The seventh gradersalso got off to a hot start, winning their first four games. Theironly losses of the year were to Salem and Cuba, although theysplit a pair of games with the Wildcats.Stats for the seventh and eighth grade were as follows:

The Steelville High Schoolvarsity girls’ basketball teamfinished the season with an 8-16 overall record. The LadyCardinals were 3-7 inGasconade Valley Confernece(GVC) play.While the girls didn’t have

the season they were expect-ing, the Lady Cardinals didhave a fine showing in one ofthe two tournaments theyplayed. The varsity girls madeit to the championship of theValley Tournament and fin-ished second. They also defeat-ed their closest rivals, Cuba,two out of three games.Senior Erin Ransom was the

team leader for the LadyCardinals. She was the onlymember of the team selected tothe GVC all-conference squadand fell just one vote short ofbeing named the league’s mostvaluable player for 2006-07.Ransom will play college bas-ketball at Missouri Valley inMarshall, Mo., next season.Ransom had a great season

for the Lady Cardinals. Sheaveraged 16.4 points per game,scoring a total of 395 points.She also had 104 rebounds, 34steals and shot 79 percent fromthe free-throw line.Ransom was one of four sen-

iors on this year’s team. Herclassmates on the varsitysquad were Sammi Smith,Erin Whitson and EndiViehman.Smith scored 145 points,

pulled down 142 rebounds tolead the team and shot 66 per-cent from the line. Whitsonhad 79 rebounds, shot 37 per-cent from the field and aver-aged three points per game.

Viehman averaged 1.3 pointsand 1.5 rebounds per game.Juniors Kim Jones and

Jessie Stice started for the var-sity Lady Cardinals all season.Jones scored 76 points and had80 rebounds and 20 steals.Stice put up 177 points as thesecond-highest scorer on theteam and had 105 rebounds togo along with 43 assists and 30steals.Sophomore Morgan

Hammonds was also a starter,scoring 131 points. She had 76assists, 71 rebunds and 30steals. Hammonds shot 66 per-cent from the free-throw line.Sophomore Michelle Martin

led the JV with 103 points thisseason. She also averaged twopoints and one rebound pergame in limited varsity action.Freshman Olivia Santhuff alsoplayed some varsity, averagingtwo points and 1.2 assists pergame. She shot 75 percent fromthe free-throw line.Freshman Jamie Mabe aver-

aged 1.5 points and tworebounds per game when sheplayed on the varsity level andscored 96 points for the JV.Classmate Lindsie Woods putup 56 points for the JV and hadtwo points and 1.7 reboundsper game in limited varsityaction.Jessica Keeven, also a fresh-

man, was the leading three-point shooter for the juniorvarsity and scored a seasontotal of 65 points. Sunni Smithalso played for the JV.The varsity Lady Cardinals

were coached by Jeff Tolleyand the JV team was coachedby Allie Farley. The JV had aseason mark of 5-7.
