Goodman Theatre is Chicago’s oldest and largest not-for-profit theater, internationally renowned for the quality of its produc-

tions, the depth and diversity of its artistic leadership, and for its many education and community programs.

The vision of the Goodman is to become the premier cultural organization in Chicago through productions and community

programs that make an essential contribution to the quality of life in our society.

The Goodman has identified three institutional values that form the basis for the vision and objectives of Goodman Theatre,

and serve as guiding pillars for our productions and programming. These values are:

VISION

QUALiTyGoodman Theatre believes that live theater illuminates the past, informs the present and

imagines the future. We seek to provide our audiences with the definitive theater experience.

We strive to give our artists the resources that enable them to do the best possible work with

the highest standards of excellence.

DivERSiTyGoodman Theatre believes that respect for diversity is a cornerstone of our community and

our society. Our work features a variety of aesthetics, cultures and modes of theatrical expres-

sion. We are committed to promoting creativity, collaboration, artistic risk-taking, freedom of

expression and cultural diversity.

COmmUniTyGoodman Theatre believes that live theater plays a unique role in the educational, social and

economic development of a community. For example, theater develops cognitive skills, emotion-

al growth and moral awareness, particularly in young people. Since the Goodman is a part of

the community, we believe that we have a responsibility to improve the quality of life through

our productions and education programs.

as one of america’s leading professional theaters, the

Goodman is committed to the development of new plays

that may in time become tomorrow’s classics. The creation

of new work is effected in a number of ways: new and es-

tablished writers are commissioned; works in progress enjoy

readings and workshops; and full productions are mounted.

During the 2005/2006 Season, the new Work Development

Committee, under the co-chairmanship of Trustees eugene

Zeffren and Cyndi Simon, provided ongoing support to these

play development efforts.

New play development activities during the Season included the following:

COmmiSSiOnS

a new work (tentatively titled Two Echoes) by playwright

noah haidle, whose play Vigils received its world premiere

at the Goodman in October 2006. haidle’s other plays in-

clude Mr. Marmalade, Rag and Bone, Princess Marjorie and

Persephone. his work has been produced at South Coast

repertory, long Wharf Theatre, roundabout Theatre and

huntington Theatre.

a new work by playwright rebecca Gilman, whose plays Spin-

ning into Butter, Boy Gets Girl, Blue Surge and Dollhouse

were each commissioned and premiered at the Goodman.

many of these have gone on to subsequent productions in

new york, regionally and abroad.

COmmiSSiOnS CurrenTly in DevelOPmenT

under the auspices of the Joyce awards (sponsored by The

Joyce Foundation), a Goodman commission was awarded in

2004 to playwright naomi iizuka for the creation of a new

play titled Ghostwritten that deals with Southeast asian refu-

gees living in the midwest. The author of such award-winning

plays as 36 Views, Polaroid Stories and The Language of

Angels, iizuka conducted research through interviews with

members of the South asian community in Chicago, as well

as through travel to Cambodia in 2005 and 2006.

Playwright lynn nottage, in collaboration with director kate

Whoriskey, is developing a new play inspired by her travels

to africa. nottage is the author of such plays as Crumbs

from the Table of Joy (staged in the spring of 2006), Inti-

mate Apparel and Fabulation, all of which have received

numerous professional productions.

Our Lady of the Underpass, a new play by Chicago-based

playwright Tanya Saracho, was commissioned under the

auspices of the Ofner Prize—an award granted biennially to

a promising local playwright. Based on interviews and re-

search surrounding the apparent image of the virgin mary on

the Fullerton avenue underpass in Chicago’s logan Square

neighborhood, the play received a public reading as part of

the 2006 new Stages Series.

WOrkShOPS

in the summer of 2006, the Goodman hosted a week-long

workshop of Vigils by noah haidle, in preparation for the

production of the play during the 2006/2007 Owen Theatre

Season. The workshop allowed the playwright to hone the

script and to begin the collaboration with director kate

Whoriskey, members of the cast and the designers.

laTinO TheaTre FeSTival neW WOrkS WeekenD

in conjunction with the biennial latino Theatre Festival, the

Goodman hosted workshops of four new plays, as well as

several panel discussions on topics related to new work by

latino playwrights. Taking place over the course of the first

weekend of the festival, readings and performances included

a new solo piece by nationally recognized playwright and

performance artist luis alfaro entitled The Night Minnie

Ripperton Saved My Life; a reading of Tanya Saracho’s Quita

Mitos in conjunction with Teatro luna; a reading of migdalia

Cruz’s play El Grito Del Bronx in conjunction with Teatro

vista; and a reading of Chicago-based playwright Carlos

murillo’s Dark Play, or Stories for Boys. The weekend was

attended by a number of local and national theater artists

and producers, both at the Goodman and the Palmer house

hilton, in conjunction with the annual association for Theatre

in higher education Conference.

From an exhilarating revival of a classic Broadway musical to a new play about one of america’s economic

and cultural icons, the 2005/2006 Goodman Theatre Season featured a diverse blend of the old and the

new, the contemporary and the classic—and festivals honoring the prolific career of David mamet, our

celebrated native son, and the best of latino theater.

The albert season roared to exuberant life with Purlie, a galvanizing reworking by director Sheldon epps

of the 1970 musical based on Ossie Davis’s wicked satire of the Old South, co-produced with the Pasa-

dena Playhouse. in January, manilow resident Director mary Zimmerman’s incandescent reinvestigation

of Pericles, one of Shakespeare’s most magical and moving works, came to the albert stage direct from a

triumphant run at Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. another much-lauded young direc-

tor, Jessica Thebus, made her Goodman debut with The Clean House, Sarah ruhl’s quirky, funny, deeply

affecting study of death, love and the saving force of humor. artistic associate regina Taylor closed the

albert season with The Dreams of Sarah Breedlove, a moving portrait of the public successes and private

heartbreak of madam C. J. Walker, america’s first self-made female millionaire, a role that was vibrantly

portrayed by l. Scott Caldwell.

in the Owen, actor/playwright Stephen lang mesmerized audiences with Beyond Glory, his one-man tour-de-force, bringing to

life eight american heroes, all recipients of the medal of honor. in may, resident Director Chuck Smith mounted a richly tex-

tured revival of lynn nottage’s Crumbs from the Table of Joy, a beautifully resonant coming-of-age story set in 1950s harlem.

and in the midst of all of this activity, we proudly honored Chicago’s own David mamet with a six-week festival of his work,

featuring the old (my own revival of A Life in the Theatre) and the new (Pam mackinnon’s caustically hilarious rendering of

mamet’s most recent play, Romance), plus evenings of one-acts, special events (including a memorable interview with mamet

himself, conducted by retired Chicago Tribune chief theater critic richard Christiansen) and even a show for children, The

Revenge of the Space Pandas or Binky Rudich and the Two-Speed Clock.

Special events included A Christmas Carol, celebrating its 28th birthday this season and once again featured the sparkling

direction of kate Buckley and the wonderfully resonant Scrooge of William Brown. and to cap it all off, the two-week latino

Theatre Festival, curated by resident artistic associate henry Godinez in august, was a feast for theatergoers from all commu-

nities, featuring return visits by performers luis alfaro and marta Carrasco; Chicago premieres of productions by Spain’s fabled

Comediants, Brazil’s Pia Fraus, and the new york-based universes; readings of new works by the newest generation of latino

authors; and other noteworthy events, including a concert reading of hugo Salcedo’s contemporary tragedy The Crossing,

followed by a compelling discussion of america’s controversial immigration policies with noted local political luminaries.

Of course, none of this activity would have been possible without the dedicated efforts of literally dozens of outstanding artists;

our collective of resident artists, whose passions are at the core of our artistic mission; a talented staff, led by General manager

katherine murphy and associate Producer Steve Scott; our distinguished boards, whose support forms the backbone of Goodman

Theatre; and my producing partner of nearly two decades, executive Director roche Schulfer. and to our legions of supportive,

discerning, dedicated audience members and donors i offer my most sincere thanks. as i’ve noted many times before, you are

the lifeblood of our work.

The 2005/2006 Season was filled with powerful playwrights, artists and productions that furthered

the Goodman’s mission and embodied our continuing commitment to quality, diversity and the

Chicago community.

artistic Director robert Falls and the artistic Collective created an amazing season of visually stunning and

provocative works that increased the scope of the plays produced in the albert Theatre, drew new patrons

into the Owen Theatre and linked both of these spaces with two festivals of unprecedented proportion.

accomplishments of the 2005/2006 Season include:

• The Goodman produced 22 plays, presentations, programs and special events for an audience

of 300,000.

• attendance reached 90% for the second consecutive year, with more than 25,000 subscribers

between the albert and Owen Theatres.

• The theater raised $500,000 in new annual support, including a record number of production

sponsorships, and saw dramatic growth in the Scenemakers Council, an auxiliary group comprised of young, diverse pro-

fessionals who aid audience development.

• a major new branding campaign was launched, including a fully updated website featuring photos, interviews and

behind-the-scenes footage for all albert productions, that eases the process for purchasing tickets and subscriptions, and

making on-line donations.

This season, Trustee lester n. Coney assumed the role of Board Chairman with the contagious enthusiasm and visionary

leadership that inspires the work of his fellow Trustees. The dedication of our Board of Trustees and Women’s Board, combined

with the tireless efforts of the Goodman staff under the leadership of General manager kathy murphy, associate Producer Steve

Scott, Finance Director Peter Calibraro, Director of management Deb Clapp, Director of Development Dorlisa martin, marketing

and Pr Director lori kleinerman, Production manager Scott Conn and Publicity Director Denise Garrity, is the foundation of the

Goodman’s success.

Finally, i would like to thank our audiences, volunteers and more than 6,000 donors for your support this season and every

season. it simply would not happen without you. if you would like more information about the Goodman, please do not hesi-

tate to contact me at [email protected].

We reached diverse audiences with the grand scope of works on our stages, built upon the Goodman’s

longstanding dedication to new work, and supported the work of the Goodman’s artistic Collective, as

well as some of america’s most influential theater artists.

in addition to the productions in our subscription season, a number of special events graced the Goodman’s

stages this year including the annual production of A Christmas Carol; the David mamet Festival, a com-

prehensive look at the works of one of Chicago’s best-known playwrights; and the latino Theatre Festival.

During the 2005/2006 Season, the Goodman’s education and Community Programs were a vital part

of the theater’s programming with the 20th anniversary of the Student Subscription Series; the summer

youth Drama Workshop, yollocalli, in collaboration with the mexican Fine arts Center museum; and The

General Theater Studies program. The Student Subscription Series grew from 1,800 to 2,700 partici-

pants—the largest increase in the program’s history.

The Goodman family, composed of artists and staff, the Board of Trustees, the Women’s Board, the Scenemakers Council, insti-

tutional and individual donors, and our patrons and subscribers, was incredibly generous this year in supporting the Goodman’s

artistic excellence and vision. i am truly grateful for all they do to further our mission to become the premier cultural institution

in Chicago. i am especially thankful for the leadership of vice Chairs Shawn m. Donnelley and Peter i. mason and President

vicki v. hood, who are terrific partners in leading the charge of this amazing organization.

There are many leaders in our community who have contributed unprecedented support to the Goodman this year: katherine a.

abelson and robert J. Cornell, american airlines, american Family insurance, Susan and James annable, aon Corporation, The

Boeing Company, Cna Foundation, Chase, The Chicago Community Trust, Patricia Cox and Family, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley

Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Julius Frankel Foundation, albert ivar Goodman and his late mother’s foundation the

edith-marie appleton Foundation, harris Private Bank, illinois arts Council, The Joyce Foundation, katten muchin rosenman llP, kraft

Foods, laSalle Bank, The John D. and Catherine T. macarthur Foundation, meg and Peter mason, mcCormick Tribune Foundation, nancy

lauter mcDougal and alfred l. mcDougal, andrew W. mellon Foundation, The elizabeth morse Charitable Trust, national endowment for

the arts, Polk Bros. Foundation, The renaissance hotel, The Shubert Foundation, Wal-mart and the Women’s Board of Goodman Theatre.

it has been a pleasure serving as Chairman of the Board during this 2005/2006 Season, and i am thankful for having the

finest artists, the hardest-working staff and the most engaged boards to help me represent the Goodman as one of the finest

cultural organizations in Chicago.

Goodman Theatre’s education and Community Programs are

models of excellence in arts integration for the City of Chicago

and the national theater community. Providing year-round

programs for learners of all ages through innovative partner-

ships with schools, teachers, students, audience members,

Chicago-area cultural institutions and the community at large.

STuDenT SuBSCriPTiOn SerieS

For 20 consecutive seasons, the free Student Subscription

Series has been offered to Chicago public high schools and

continued to attract national and international attention. This

season, through the addition of A Christmas Carol to the

roster of productions available to the Series, we were able

to increase the number of participating students and high

schools by 50 percent. as a result, nearly 2,700 students

and 69 teachers from 45 schools received free subscriptions

including Saturday seminars on teaching Shakespeare, the

adaptation of actor training techniques for classroom use

and a semester-long class helping teachers create curricu-

lua for teaching dramatic literature. Participating teachers

in both programs received “lane Change” credit from the

Chicago Public School system.

yOuTh Drama WOrkShOP

it was another banner year for the Summer youth Drama

Workshop (yDW). in its ninth year, the yollocalli yDW, in

partnership with the mexican Fine arts Center museum

(mFaCm), brought together a group of teenagers from the

Pilsen neighborhood to collaborate on a production of Jun-

galbook, adapted from rudyard kipling. under the artistic

leadership of resident artistic associate henry Godinez and

developed by teaching artists maritza Cervantes and Tony

Sancho, the students were guided through a series of writing

and performance activities, as well as workshops in animal

behavior and movement. They brought the world of the jun-

gle to life for a full house of friends, family and community

members. it was a privilege to continue the relationship with

the mFaCm and the Pilsen community. This year was made

even more special by the continuation of yollocalli yDW

alumna hilda Franco as a member of the teaching staff, after

serving as an apprentice artist in the program for five years.

General TheaTer STuDieS PrOGram

in its second year, the General Theater Studies program

brought 46 high school students from around the city together

to collaborate in the Goodman’s rehearsal halls. resident

Director Chuck Smith served as program director—with lead

teaching artist reginald lawrence and teaching artists kevin

Douglas and larry nance—and designed a curriculum which

used the study of directing and set, costume, lighting and

sound design as a basis for building reading and writing skills,

teamwork and ensemble, and introducing students to theater

basics. Though none of the participants had ever attempted

to direct or design a play before, in five short weeks they had

collaboratively created full design presentations and staged

readings of selected scenes from Shepsu aakhu’s play Fascia.

The students performed their staged readings and presented

their designs to their family and friends and Goodman staff

and supporters.

and their students included scripts, student and teacher guides,

OnStage magazine, and “Backstage at the Goodman” DvD

documentaries. Supplementing these materials were seminars

for teachers featuring pre-show dialogues with artists from the

production along with a preview performance; discussions

with cast members following each matinee; and classroom

visits by cast members. Parents were offered free tickets to

evening performances so that they could share the experi-

ence with their children.

in addition to these activities, the Goodman offered several

special programs for Chicago public high school teachers,

During the 2005/2006 Season, Goodman Theatre’s internship

Program provided career training for 35 qualified undergrad-

uate and graduate students and early-career professionals in

a variety of areas. each year the Goodman welcomes interns

to work in every area of theater, from artistic administration,

education and technical production to stage management,

marketing and fundraising. Chosen from a highly competitive

pool of applicants, interns receive a small stipend for their

work and qualified participants may be eligible to receive

college credit and/or equity membership points.

an adjunct to this program, the maggio Directing Fellowship

provides an early-career, Chicago-based director with a

season-long experience at the Goodman. Created to honor

the memory of former associate artistic Director michael

maggio—who was a dynamic educator and mentor to young

directors—the fellowship provides its recipient a stipend,

the opportunity to assist a Goodman director on a produc-

tion, and a variety of additional experiences as part of the

Goodman’s artistic staff. The 2005/2006 maggio Fellow

was Dado, a director and an actor in Chicago for more than

10 years. She is the director of education for emerald City

The Stage Door Series is designed to provide an insider’s

view of the world of theater through lectures, discussions and

performances that focus on selected Goodman productions.

Presented under the auspices of Goodman’s Theatre arts

Committee, Stage Door presentations in 2005/2006 included:

THE HEALING POWER OF LAUGHTER

in The Clean House, playwright Sarah ruhl tackles two

subjects that are rarely found in the same sentence: comedy

and cancer. This discussion explored why those two topics do

belong together, addressing research and anecdotal evidence

about the healing power of laughter. Speakers included Dr. ed

Dunkenblau, past president of the association of applied and

Therapeutic humor, director of the institute for emotionally

intelligent learning and a clinical psychologist in private

practice; Cartoonist nicole hollander, creator of the nation-

ally syndicated comic strip Sylvia; and a representative from

Gilda’s Club, a national network of support communities for

men, women and children living with cancer named for the

late comedienne Gilda radner.

THE LEGACy OF MADAME C.J. WALkER

in The Dreams of Sarah Breedlove, playwright and director

regina Taylor chronicles the story of america’s first self-made

female millionaire, madame C.J. Walker. The daughter of

slaves, Walker (née Breedlove) built an empire by manufac-

turing and selling hair goods and preparations. She went on

to become an important philanthropist and tireless advocate

for civil rights. This discussion focused on madame Walker’s

legacy as a powerful role model for women and african

americans, gathering together some of Chicago’s top female

and african american entrepreneurs to reflect on her example,

and to assess what progress has been made since her time

and what obstacles to success continue to exist.

THE CROSSING: READING AND PANEL DISCUSSION

as part of the 2006 latino Theatre Festival, resident artistic

associate and Festival Curator henry Godinez directed a staged

reading of hugo Salcedo’s provocative and timely play The

Crossing, dealing with the tragic deaths of eighteen mexican

workers attempting entry into the united States. This perfor-

mance was followed by a discussion of the many controversies

surrounding current american immigration policies led by

antonio mora, anchorman for CBS-2’s nightly newscast. The

panel included u.S. representative Jesse Jackson, Jr.; play-

wright luis alfaro; Susan Gzesh, Senior lecturer and Director

of the human rights Program at the university of Chicago; Fr.

Bruce Willems of holy Cross/immaculate heart of mary Par-

ish in the Back of the yards neighborhood; and Jose artemio

arreola, local community activist and co-leader of Chicago’s

historic immigration demonstration on march 10, 2006.

nOOn SalOnS aT The GOODman

each season, the Goodman provides the noon Salon series,

noontime discussions of selected Goodman productions. hosted

by members of the artistic staff and featuring guest scholars

(in partnership with the Graham School of Continuing education

at the university of Chicago), these events provide historical

and literary background for the production, while also provid-

ing a forum for the discussion of artistic, social and political

issues surrounding the play.

The Goodman is pleased to recognize the following donors who have provided significant support to our education and Community programs during the 2005/2006 Season:
