The Fear the Turtle campaign was launched in the Fall of 2003 with the goal of raising $1.2M to annually fund scholarships for the eight men’s teams at the University of Maryland that do not have the maximum number of scholarship allowed by the NCAA. These men’s sports – Baseball, Cross Country, Golf, Swimming, Tennis, Indoor Track and Field, Outdoor Track and Field, and Wrestling – need additional scholarships in order to recruit talented student-athletes to compete for the Terrapins.

Maryland Athletics and the wrestling coaching staff would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all letter winners and friends of the program who have contributed to the Fear the Turtle campaign. Your generosity has provided Maryland Wrestling with 4 additional scholarships, bringing our current total to 9 full scholarships!

Our success is directly related to your support. Together, we are returning Maryland Wrestling to national prominence and causing all of our opponents to Fear the Turtle!

Pat Santoro, a two-time NCAA national champion and four-t ime All-American, returns for his second season at the helm of the Maryland program. Santoro has already created a buzz around the Terrapin program after attracting a nationally-ranked recruiting class after just one season in College Park.

Top-notch recruits are attracted to the program because of Santoro’s proven track record of success. In his nine seasons as an

assistant coach at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., he helped the Mountain Hawks ascend on the national scene. In 2003, Santoro’s last season with the program, Lehigh finished fourth in the team standings at the 2003 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and Santoro was named the national Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Lehigh had national top-10 finishes in three of the past four seasons and has finished either first or second in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association seven times in the last eight years, including four team championships. Santoro has also served as an assistant coach at Duquesne (1993-94) and Penn State (1991-93).

In his first season in College Park, the Terps were 4-9 in dual meet action. At the ACC Tournament, though, Maryland’s Jason Kiessling (157) and Barry Stein (HWT) advanced to the finals and were named to the ACC All-Tournament team. This season, the Terps will look to infuse new talent with the experience gained in 2003-04.

Santoro brings to Maryland credentials that include national success as both a coach and as a student-athlete. Santoro was an All-American wrestler at the University of Pittsburgh, earning that status each season from 1986 through 1989. He won NCAA Division I individual national championships at 142 pounds in 1988 and 1989, and was a three-time individual champion in the Eastern Wrestling League. He was the recipient of Pittsburgh’s Golden Panther Award in 1989, recognizing the outstanding athlete of the year.

Following his success as a collegiate wrestler, Santoro went on to a stellar international career, being ranked among the nation’s top wrestlers for more than a decade. He was a member of the U.S. National Team in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999, serving as an alternate for the 1996 Olympic Team and the 1999 World Team. He placed fourth at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, third at the 1992 Trials and was runner-up at the U.S. Open Freestyle competition in 1992.

“I’m extremely happy to have an opportunity to serve as a head coach at a university with such great tradition as Maryland,” said Santoro, 38, on the day of his hiring. “Athletically and academically, Maryland fits extremely well with what I’d like to accomplish as a head coach. The school has produced a number of outstanding individuals who have gone on to successful careers. After so many years as an

assistant coach, I’m grateful and excited about having the opportunity to become a head coach.”

Santoro graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Pittsburgh in 1992. While there he was a two-time team captain and a member of Athletes in Action and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is a member of the EWL and District XI Wrestling halls of fame.

Coaching Staff

Brad Dillon, an All-American on the mat and in the classroom at Lehigh, begins his first season as an assistant coach University of Maryland this fall. Dillon wrestled and flourished under head coach Pat Santoro’s direction while at Lehigh.

A four-year starter for the Mountain Hawks, Dillon finished fourth at the NCAA Tournament as a senior and fifth as a junior at 174 pounds to earn All-America honors. In addition, he was a two-time team captain and captured a pair Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) titles. He finished his career with

over 100 victories and set school records for career dual meet victories (67), season dual meet victories (24) and most takedowns in a season (145).

ASSISTANT COACH BRAD DILLON1st season at Maryland • Lehigh 2004

Off the mat, Dillon was named an Academic All-American and was a recipient of the Lehigh University Scholar Athlete Award as a senior.

“I am excited for the opportunity to work with Pat,” Dillon commented when he was hired. “He was instrumental in my accomplishments and I am familiar with his coaching system and philosophies. I am very confident in my ability to help the student-athletes at Maryland become better wrestlers and well-balanced individuals.”

“I am extremely excited to have Brad join our staff,” Santoro said. “He is an excellent technician and is committed to the development of our student-athletes on and off the mat. Brad’s intensity will have an immediate impact in building our program.”

ASSISTANT COACH SHANE MACK2nd season at Maryland • Maryland 1998

Shane Mack, a former member of the Terrapin wrestling team, returns to his alma mater for his second season as an assistant coach.

As a student-athlete at Maryland, Mack obtained accolades on and off the mat. As a three-time NCAA qualifier (1996-1998), Mack received the Unsung Hero Award as a junior, and was designated a captain his senior year, a season in which Mack was ranked in the top 10 nationally by Amateur Wrestling News.

Impressively, Mack’s wrestling accomplishments mirrored the honors he accumulated in the classroom. Graduating with a degree in Social Studies Education, Mack was a scholar athlete during his tenure in College Park.

In the five years since he graduated, Mack has continued to pursue his interests in both wrestling and education.

After serving as assistant wrestling coach at Solanco High School (Penn.), Mack garnered his first head coaching position at Ithaca High School (N.Y.), where he remained for two seasons.

In 2002, Mack entered the Division I coaching ranks, as the Assistant Head Coach at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Overall, he was involved in the day-to-day operations of running a Division I wrestling program. Responsibilities at Greensboro included recruiting prospective student-athletes, leading practices, implementing a strength training program and monitoring the academic progress of the athletes.

Furthermore, Mack has also been a full-time history teacher for both middle and high school students at each of his stops on the road back to College Park.

His blend of academics and athletics fits nicely with the Terrapins’ repertoire of flourishing student-athletes.

KEVIN KEARNSAdministrative Assistant28th season at Maryland • Maryland 1975

Former Terrapin letterwinner Kevin Kearns enters his 28th season on the Maryland staff, his first as an administrative assistant after spending the previous 27 years as an assistant coach. In 1970, while a captain of the wrestling team, Kearns was drafted into the United States Army. He served with the 101st Airborne Division in a Recon Team in Vietnam in 1971 and 1972.

Upon his completion of military duty, Kearns returned to the Maryland wrestling program in

1972-73 and assisted Coach McHugh and the team. Wrestling during this time for the Baltimore Central YMCA, Kearns won the national YMCA Greco championship, the prestigious New York Athletic Club Greco championship and two South Atlantic AAU freestyle championships.

After receiving his degree, he moved to Minnesota to train and wrestle for the United States Greco Roman team. Returning to Maryland in 1976, Kearns was named head coach at Dulaney High School in Timonium, Md. In 1977, he was selected to take the head coaching position at Johns Hopkins University, but returned to Maryland in 1980, where he has served as an assistant coach for 27 years before moving to an administrative position in 2004.

JASON NAGLEVolunteer Assistant Coach1st season at MarylandPennsykvania 2000

Jason Nagle enters his first year at the University of Maryland as a volunteer assistant coach.

A native Marylander, Nagle attended Centennial High School in Ellicott City where he was a state finalist. In college, Nagle was a four-year starter, wrestling at Penn State University before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn, he advanced to the finals of the EIWA tournament two times, winning the tournament once.

After graduating in 2000 with a degree in Biology, Nagle worked as an equity and index options trader

before returning to the classroom in the fall of 2004. He is currently a first year student at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

SEASON OUTLOOKYoung ... Talented ... Improving

In any sport at the Division I level, it is difficult to win with a young squad. Whether it is adjusting to the speed of the sport, the demanding schedule or simply gaining experience at a higher level of competition, the only consistency from a young squad is inconsistency. In Pat Santoro’s second season at the helm of the Maryland program, the team will be young, but the team will be talented and will show improvement from the beginning of the season to the end.

The projected starting lineup features just one senior, so junior co-captains Adam James (157) and Jason Gribschaw (141) will be counted on for leadership as well as wins in the middle of the lineup.

“They’re both juniors with a lot of experience and we are looking for them to bring the team together,” Santoro says. “They have been around the program and have been through the coaching transition, and we are counting on Adam and Jason to bring team unity and help lead our team’s level.

“A young team improves greatly throughout the season,” Santoro adds. “We should have a team that is better in March than it is in November. I expect the team to battle every minute of every match, and when you keep wrestling good things happen. I want them to go out there to be tenacious and look to score points from every position.”

Santoro will mix the leadership and the aggressive attitude with the improved level of talent he has recruited in just one year. Although some of the nationally-ranked recruits will redshirt this season, the competition and depth in the wrestling room are the trademarks of a program on the rise.

“Steel sharpens steel,” Santoro says. “We have good depth in the room and we need to continue to build on that to ensure the success of our team. With each incoming recruiting class our team will continue to benefit from better competition at every weight. This will help our wrestlers reach their goals of becoming All-Americans and national champions.”

“Anyone that steps into the lineup is going to be prepared to wrestle,” he adds. “We are preparing them to go out and battle and compete with the best in the country. We teach high-percentage technique and train at the highest level because we are working to the elite level. We have to do that now to help our team in March, to help our team next year and years to follow. The expectation level has risen, the attitude has changed and the team is working hard to achieve their goals.”

In order to stimulate improvement on his young team, Santoro has scheduled ambitiously in the first part of the season so that his team will go up against some of the nation’s best at early season tournaments. This will provide the Terps with the chance to see not only how the stack up against the elite, but also what they need to improve on in order to compete at that level.

“The first part of the year is really about individual development,” Santoro says. “We want to win as many duals as we can, but we are training for the NCAAs in March. The tournaments are like NCAAs, we will have several matches a day against top-level competition. We are going to see many top programs and highly ranked individuals.”

125 – True freshman Kevin Vinh and redshirt freshman Jeff Oldham will compete for the starting spot at 125. Vinh has caught the attention of the coaches in a short amount of time and has them believing he can compete right away at the collegiate level. Oldham is a hard worker who took advantage of his redshirt year and is able to step up this year.

133 – Sean Carr and Ryan Brown are the top contenders for the 133 spot. Brown redshirted a season ago while Carr comes to Maryland after a successful career at Whitehall High in the competitive Lehigh Valley.

The two wrestlers in each of the first two weight classes are expected to push and make each other better, and the coaching staff will look to the youth in those spots to bring a spark at the top of the lineup.

141 – The deepest weight class for Maryland, eight wrestlers were competing for time as of late October. Co-captain Jason Gribschaw had the most wins of any returning starter a season ago (17), and will likely be counted on again this season. However, he will be pushed by Charlie Pinto, who saw time in the lineup as a freshman and will again be competing to see action. Andrew Schlaffer has been wrestling well in the preseason and Brian Rizzo is up from 133 and could make a push. Kyle Harger, a nationally-ranked recruit, will redshirt this season.

149 – Jared Villecco won 11 matches as a freshman and will likely return to the lineup after recovering from knee surgery. Villecco contributed three wins and three pins and will be a strong part of the lineup with his experience. Keith Bernard and Spencer Holliworth have surprised the coaches so far with their work ethic.

157 – Co-captain Adam James benefited from a redshirt season last year and is primed for a big year as a redshirt junior. James will be counted on as an anchor in the middle of the lineup to tally wins and consistent performances. The coaches feel James has the skill and commitment to compete among the nation’s best in one of the toughest weight classes in the country. Freshman Ryan Kennett will redshirt this season.

“Adam really took advantage of his redshirt year,” Santoro says. “He really bought into what we are doing and halfway through last season, he went to a different level.”

165 – Jason Kiessling, who finished second at the ACC Tournament at 157 last season, will look to build off that performance this season.

“Jason has all the tools,” Santoro says. “He’s good enough to be an All-American this year and he’s good enough to be in the national championship hunt. That’s going to be up to Jason and if he can believe in himself. He can wrestle, and he’s fun to watch when he’s rolling.”

Senior John Antonelli, who was the team’s regular starter at 165 a season ago, provides the Terps with two talented options at this weight. Antonelli went 13-13 last season, including a 5-5 mark in duals. Luke Stauffer redshirted last season and has missed preseason action with a knee injury. Rob Parker is a freshman out of New York who has great potential but needs to add technique to his aggressive and scrappy style.

174 – Sophomore Mike Maceroli will step into the lineup at 174 after spending two seasons at Lehigh. Freshman Yony Noy will likely redshirt the season, allowing Sean Fehn to compete for time behind Maceroli. Fehn has missed some time in the preseason with injury and has not had the opportunity to compete for the spot against Maceroli as of early November. The Terps will redshirt two-time Maryland state champ Eli Black.

184 – One of the nation’s top recruits, Josh Haines, will redshirt the season to gain experience at the collegiate level. Pat Cissne, who wrestled at 174 last season, will compete with Mark Eberstein for the starting spot. Cissne had a solid 10-11 season last year, including four wins in dual action. Eberstein, who was at Idaho last year which didn’t have wrestling, was the state runner-up in New Jersey at the 215 weight class as a high school senior.

197 – Sophomore Jerry Afari, who picked up 10 wins as a freshman, has added improved technique and positioning to his exceptional stamina for this season. Afari is able to wrestle the entire seven minutes, and if he can limit miscues in the first half of the match, he should be able to wear down his opponents in the third period. Dan Gargas is expected to back up Afari.

HWT – Barry Stein, the lineup’s lone senior, was an All-ACC Tournament selection after finishing second at the tournament last season. Stein had a team-high six falls last season and has added 10 pounds for his junior campaign. Sophomore David Blais gives Maryland depth at this weight.

2003-04 SEASON RECAPTerps Begin New Era Under Pat Santoro

The Maryland wrestling program started a new era in 2003-04 as Pat Santoro took over the reins as head coach. While Santoro is attempting to build a nationally-competitive program from scratch, the Terps experienced some growing pains in Santoro’s first season but also showed the improvement throughout the season that the program will try to emulate in upcoming years.

Senior 125-pounder Matt Pandullo was one of Maryland’s most consistent performers on the season, notching a team-high 20 victories, including an 11-2 dual record. Jason Kiessling came on strong towards the end of the season and earned All-ACC Tournament honors after advancing to the finals in the 157-pound weight class. Barry Stein also earned All-ACC Tournament honors by powering his way to the finals at heavyweight. Six of Stein’s 10 victories came by way of fall, a team-high.

Junior Jason Gribschaw emerged as a tough competitor at 141 pounds, picking up 17 wins for the Terps. Jerad Villecco was a stalwart in the Terrapin lineup, getting 11 wins on the season and seeing action all 13 dual matches.

The Terps opened the year at several early season tournaments, garnering some success before they headed into the dual-match portion of the schedule. Kiessling finished fifth at the Body Bar Invitational, and he and Pandullo won their weight classes in helping Maryland to a second-place finish at the Hitchcock Classic.

Maryland gave Santoro his first victory as a head coach in dramatic fashion in the season-opener in Pittsburgh, Pa., over Slippery Rock. Trailing 22-6 with three matches to go, Maryland’s Dan Scheets started the rally with a late pin of Jeremiah Frederick at 6:27. Jerry Afari kept the Terps’ hopes alive with another fall, this one coming at 5:57 in the match, to cut the score to 22-18. Needing a fall or a five-point technical fall to give Maryland the win, Stein took care of Marcus Bartley, pinning him in just 1:29 to give the Terps the 24-22 victory.

Maryland would drop its next four duals, including losses to national powers Navy and NC State, as well as a narrow loss to ACC rival North Carolina. The Terps snapped their four-match skid by pounding American, 32-3. The 32 dual points were a season-high for Maryland, as Mike Lupa recorded a fall and Pandullo and John Antonelli each recorded major decisions in the victory.

After that win, Maryland would again go on a four-match losing streak, falling to VMI, Duke, Rutgers and UNC-Greensboro. The Terps got back in the win column against Old Dominion, where the Terps and Monarchs traded victories in the first five matches. However, Maryland won four of the last five, including a pair of major decisions by Gribschaw and Villecco, to earn a 22-14 win.

The Terps took an early 12-9 lead over Virginia, but could only pick up one win in the last five bouts, as they fell to the Cavaliers. Maryland ended the dual season on a positive note, though, edging George Mason, 20-19. Pandullo notched a pin for the Terps, while Afari and Antonelli provided bonus points via major decisions for Maryland.

Maryland closed the season with a fifth-place finish at the ACC Tournament with 32 points. In addition to runner-up performances from Kiessling and Stein, Antonelli and Patrick Cissne finished third to help pace the Terps.

The Terps finished 2003-04 with a 4-9 dual record, but Santoro was able to get the Terps to wrestle hard from start to finish – which is the start of a nationally-prominent program.

COMCAST CENTER

Maryland’s new student activities building and home of Maryland Athletics was completed in fall 2002. Comcast Center’s main arena provides a seating capacity of 17,950 fans for basketball, and will serve as a campus site for university special events and select community events.

An additional 1,500-seat gym serves as home to the Terps’ wrestling, gymnastics and volleyball teams, and the Nextel Heritage Hall multi-purpose room (capacity 400) is equipped to host banquets, press conferences, large meetings and serve as a pre-game restaurant suite overlooking the competition arena.

The Comcast Center also houses the university’s athletics administration offices and includes a 7,000-square-foot Academic Support Center, providing an enhanced study atmosphere for the school’s nearly-700 student-athletes on 27 teams.

The Terrapins’ first public event for basketball was its annual Midnight Madness celebration. Both basketball teams have state-of-the-art facilities at their fingertips including locker room and lounge areas, training areas complete with jacuzzis, and outstanding weight training facilities.

Twenty suites provide enhanced viewing and entertainment capabilities for Maryland fans. Maryland’s student seating capacity accommodates 4,000, with students ringing the first 10 rows around the floor and a majority of seats on the arena’s west wall.

Comcast Center is an excellent place for alumni and fans to enjoy their favorite sports and share their common Terrapin spirit. Visitors will learn about the men and women who have made Maryland Athletics great as they stroll through the dramatic Terrapin Walk of Fame and History. And the Terrapin Team Store, located just off the soaring three-level atrium lobby, allows visitors to outfit their pride. Maryland has once again reclaimed the status of having the best student activities center and athletics home in the country.

“STRIVE FOR CLARITY, BUT ACCEPTAND UNDERSTAND AMBIGUITY."

That phrase captures one way in which an educated person approaches the world and its challenges. Students who graduate from the University of Maryland have been exposed to the tools that allow

them to put that perspective to work. Imparting such a perspective may be an ambitious project for undergraduate education, but to aim for anything less would be unworthy of a great university’s goals

for its students. Thirteen years ago, Promises to Keep, a plan for undergraduate education at Maryland, articulated those goals so eloquently we repeat them here.

Undergraduate education at Maryland “aims to provide students with a sense of identity and purpose, a concern for others, a sense of responsibility for the quality of life around them, a continuing eagerness for

knowledge and understanding, and a foundation for a lifetime of personal enrichment.”

As we learn with and from one another, we try to “develop human values,” “celebrate tolerance and fairness,” “contribute to the social conscience,” “monitor and assess private and collective assumptions,” and “recognize the glory, tragedy and humor of the human condition.”

Your years at the University of Maryland can provide you with all the tools you need to accomplish these goals. Students here are “educated to be able to read with perception and pleasure, write and speak with clarity and

verve, handle numbers and computation proficiently, reason mathematically, generate clear questions and find probable arguments, reach substantiated conclusions and accept ambiguity.”

AND WE ALSO HOPE YOU ENJOY THE JOURNEY.

The CampusBy virtually every measure of quality, the University of Maryland has gained

national recognition as one of the fastest-rising comprehensive research institutions in the country. The momentum of recent years has poised the university to move it into the top ranks of higher education and take leadership in shaping the research university of the 21st century.

The university has enjoyed a decade of momentum in all of the areas that affect quality. The average high school GPA of entering students has zoomed from 3.01 to nearly 3.90, and the average SATs are now more than 1270. The student body is a model of diversity, with minorities making up more than 32 percent of all students, and at least one graduate and undergraduate student from every state in the nation.

The university has 67 graduate and undergraduate programs ranked in the Top 25 by U.S. News and World Report, up from just one program in 1991.

Sponsored research and outreach has nearly tripled in the same 10-year period, exceeding $350 million last year. Private giving also has increased, and the university last year concluded its first campaign by topping its $350 million goal by more than $100 million. Alumni Association membership has been growing at an average rate of 10 percent a year since 1992.

One of the largest research universities in the United States, Fall 2002 enrollment was 25,240 undergraduate and 9,561 graduate students. There are 94 undergraduate programs, 89 master’s programs, 70 doctoral programs and one first professional degree program. More than 100 centers and institutes are engaged in research and outreach.

Faculty at the University of Maryland, in all fields of knowledge, are engaged at the highest levels of national and international concern. The university’s location near the center of federal policy-making and international political and economic activity enables it to play an active role in research and analysis of public policy.

Maryland is one of 30 public universities in the prestigious 63-member Association of American Universities and the only public institution in the Maryland-D.C. area with membership in the nation’s most distinguished honor society, Phi Beta Kappa.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLANDDR. C.D. MOTEUniversity PresidentCalifornia ‘59Seventh Year

As the 19th president of the University of Maryland, C. D. “Dan” Mote Jr. has presided since 1998 over a university that is claiming a well-earned position in the top echelon of research universities in the nation. An internationally-respected researcher

and member of the National Academy of Engineering, Dr. Mote is Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering. He serves on the Technology Council of Maryland, is co-chair of the Potomac Conference of the Greater Washington Board of Trade and heads its Technology Transfer Committee.

Under President Mote’s leadership, Maryland has received national and international notice for innovative undergraduate education opportunities, high-impact research and academic programs, outstanding performing arts, and athletes and athletic teams competitive with the best in the nation.

“The future of the state depends on this university,” says Mote. “It is the State of Maryland’s most important asset.” As president, Dan Mote has been determined to make that asset even greater by nourishing a culture of excellence and civility across the campus, strengthening the university’s connections with its various stakeholders, building partnerships with State and national corporations and federal agencies and achieving distinction as an institution where discovery takes place every day and everywhere. The university’s progress can be seen in all areas, from its nationally-ranked programs to its success in building external partnerships to its state-of-the-art facilities.

Quality ProgramsOver the past decade, the quality of Maryland’s programs and reputation has

climbed steadily. In 2003, the University of Maryland moved up to 17th place among public universities in U.S. News & World Report rankings, up from 30th in 1998. We currently have 44 graduate and undergraduate programs and units ranked in the top 15 by U.S. News & World Report, up from 5 in 1995.

While our academic successes have spread across the board, the university has emerged as a true powerhouse in business, computer science, earth sciences, engineering, environmental policy, education and journalism. Maryland is one of only 10 public and private universities that have their programs in computer science, mathematics, physics, and engineering each ranked in the top 20. Our College of Education is ranked in the top 20 nationally and 5 of its programs are in the top 10.

Athletic ExcellenceMote sees athletics as an integral part of the university experience. Indeed

athletic success more often than not reflects academic success, he notes. For example, all four of the teams that played in the 2002 NCAA basketball Final Four, including Maryland, are members of the prestigious Association of American Universities, the organization that comprises the leading research and academic universities in North America. “That’s no accident,” Mote says. “Institutions that are committed to excellence tend to be excellent in every endeavor. Our successes in football, basketball, lacrosse and other sports reflects our culture of quality as much as our successes in engineering, business, education and journalism.”

Faculty Stature

Dr. Mote believes a university’s quality is built by its faculty, and under his leadership, Maryland continues to attract the best faculty available. The university recruited a Nobel Laureate in Physics in 2001 and three more Pulitzer Prize winners (to join three already on the faculty). More than 30 of our faculty are members of the national academies, the highest professional recognition attainable.

DID YOU KNOW?In 1991, Maryland had one program listed among Top 25 entrants in the U.S. News & World Report Rankings. Maryland now has 67 programs ranked among the nation’s elite, and the university is ranked 18th nationally among public universities.

A report card published in Technology Review rated the top U.S. universities in their quest for intellectual property, commercial partners and profits. Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland (28th) were the Mid-Atlantic (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia) schools to make the “campus patenting” top 50 list.

Black Issues In Higher Education ranked the university fourth nationally in bachelor’s degrees earned by African-American students at traditionally white schools. Maryland ranks first in African-American undergraduate degrees in social sciences and history.

The Wall Street Journal ranked the Robert H. Smith School of Business No. 16 among the world’s business schools. Maryland is the top-ranked school in the Mid-Atlantic region (Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia). The Financial Times of London ranked the Robert H. Smith School of Business No. 8 in information technology, No. 6 in faculty research and No. 7 in entrepreneurship.

In the only undergraduate program rankings released by U.S. News & World Report–business and engineering–both the Robert H. Smith School of Business (No. 18) and A. James Clark School of Engineering (No. 24) were ranked among the top 25. The university also ranked in the top 25 for its learning communities (3rd), first-year experience (12th) and service learning programs (24th).

Deborah A. Yow is in the 11th year of her outstanding tenure as director of athletics at the University of Maryland, a tenure that has seen unprecedented success and achievement in Maryland athletics. Each year has brought about continued improvement and accomplishment in Terrapin athletics. In Yow’s 10 years at Maryland, the Terrapins have won a remarkable nine NCAA national championships and graduated its student athletes at an enviable rate as Maryland

athletics has soared to sustained new heights. The comprehensive success of Terrapin athletics under Debbie Yow’s leadership

is a clear and compelling testimony of her values of excellence, teamwork and accountability.

Likewise, her election to the presidency of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics four years ago is an indication of the wide respect with which she is regarded among its 6,100 members representing 1,600 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. She was singled out by Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal as one of the leading administrators in the U.S. and she received the Carl Maddox Sport Management Award presented by the United States Sports Academy for excellence in athletics administration. Yow was selected to serve on the U.S. Department of Education’s Commission on Opportunities in Athletics to review the status of Federal Title IX regulations. She has served as the chair of the Atlantic Coast Conference Committee on Television for 2003 through 2004. The committee, comprised of the ACC’s athletics directors, is charged with overseeing the league’s TV contracts and dealing with issues related to television. Yow led the committee during the recent, very successful renegotiation of comprehensive, multiyear ACC football and basketball contracts with ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and syndication entities. Additionally, she has represented intercollegiate athletics with presentations in a number of prominent settings such as the Harvard University School of Law conference on “Shaping the Future of Collegiate Athletics” and the Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal “National Forum on the Direction of

Intercollegiate Athletics.” She was also recently inducted into the State of Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame.

Yow, who has served on the NCAA Management Council and the NCAA Division I Budget Committee, is a strong and steady voice on behalf of intercollegiate athletics in America.

Since taking over as AD at Maryland in 1994, she and her staff have:• Transformed Terrapin athletics into a responsive, goal-oriented

organization.• Balanced all 10 of the department’s annual budgets (the first balanced

budgets in the 10 years prior to her arrival). The budget has now reached $43 million annually and the multi-million dollar accumulated operating debt which her administration inherited has been eradicated.

• Greatly enhanced the academic support services provided for student-athletes, with an enviable exhausted eligibility graduation rate of approximately 85 percent for student athletes at Maryland.

• Led the Terrapins to a national all-sports ranking in the upper 10 percent of all NCAA Division I institutions.

• Significantly expanded marketing and fund-raising efforts on behalf of Terrapin athletics. As a result, private gifts to athletics have increased over 350 percent and corporate sponsorship revenues have increased by over 300 percent during her tenure at Maryland.

• Continued to dramatically improve venues and facilities for the department’s 27 teams. The Comcast Center for men’s and women’s basketball and other sports that use the facility is a prime example of the dramatic upgrade of athletic facilities.

• Implemented a strategic management model.• Developed a comprehensive Internet strategy with management, marketing

and fund-raising applications.• Significantly improved customer care in every area of Maryland athletics.

The most recent achievements of Maryland athletics are exceptional:• Maryland was selected by U.S. News & World Report as one of the Top 20

athletic programs in the nation (for overall quality and competitive excellence).• In men’s basketball, the Terps won the Atlantic Coast Conference title over Duke in the championship game in 2004 and won the NCAA National Championship in 2002. Under Coach Gary Williams, the men’s basketball team has appeared in the last 11 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, one of only five programs to do so.• Women’s basketball also won its way to the NCAA Tournament in 2004, advancing to the Second Round.• In football , the Terps won the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference championship and played in the 2002 Orange Bowl, and followed with an 11-win season and a 30-3 victory over the University of Tennessee in the Peach Bowl, again followed by a 10-win season and a 41-7 win over West Virginia in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day 2004.

Additionally, Maryland is one of only six universities to win a National Championship in both basketball and football (UCLA, Michigan, Michigan State, Syracuse, Ohio State and Maryland).

• Maryland was selected as the sixth-finest athletic program in the nation by the Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics, based on criteria such as graduation rates, financial efficiency, equity effectiveness and competitive excellence.

• Hired the Associated Press National Coach of the Year, Brenda Frese, as the new women’s basketball coach. In her second season at the helm, her team drew 13,250 to a regular-season game and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

• Hired Dave Cottle, the third-winningest active men’s lacrosse coach in the U.S., who guided his team to the NCAA Final Four in his second year.

• Field Hockey played for the National Championship in 2001 and continues to be a Final Four team.

• Women’s Lacrosse has continued its winning ways with seven national championships from 1995-2001, with additional Final Four appearances.

• Football facilities have been significantly enhanced with team house, stadium and practice field upgrades.

• The Terrapins moved into the new $125 million Comcast Center, housing athletic department offices and seating for 18,000 fans for basketball and other events.

• In 2003-04, 12 Maryland teams competed in NCAA postseason play, which earned Maryland a place in the Top 25 national rankings in the USSA Directors’ Cup for competitive excellence.

• The productivity, morale, and the competitive and academic achievement of Terrapin athletics are exceptional and continue to gain momentum.

Regarding the many achievements of Terrapin athletics over the past 10 years, Yow says, “We are pleased, but we are not satisfied… our vision is to be one of the Top 5 programs in the nation consistently… we see no reason to settle for less.”

Yow is known for her goal-oriented and proactive management style. She consistently inspires and challenges those around her to “raise our sights and sharpen our tools… to work hard and smart… to recognize that our only limitations are those that we place upon ourselves.”

As a manager and a leader, she clearly models these principles. She is the only known current AD in NCAA Division I who has hired both the National Coach of the Year in football (while at Maryland) and the National Coach of the Year in men’s basketball (while at Saint Louis University). Yow is known as “a coach’s AD,” while also being highly organized and a strategic and proactive leader and administrator. Quite simply, Debbie Yow personifies the relational and management dynamics that are necessary to be an excellent administrator.

A successful former coach at the University of Kentucky and University of Florida, she moved into athletics administration at the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, followed by a successful tenure as AD at Saint Louis University.

She has authored numerous articles and books on athletics management and human behavior, and is a respected leader in intercollegiate athletics in the United States.

Reflecting on the status of the Terrapin men’s basketball program, Maryland’s Director of Athletics points out, “Our men’s basketball team has become one of America’s premier collegiate programs under the leadership of Coach Gary Williams and his staff. We are one of only five institutions to advance to the NCAA postseason tournament in each of the last 11

years, and the only team in the ACC to do so.” Summing up the entire athletics program, our athletics director recently stated,

“We have the finest student-athletes, coaches, support staff and administrative team in America. It is because of their courage, hard work and cooperative spirit that we now have a strong, viable athletic program. I am immensely proud of each of them. I am equally proud of our Terrapin fans who buy tickets, our Terrapin Club members who faithfully support the Maryland athletic program with their donations for scholarships, and the M Club members who serve and give liberally. We are also blessed with a terrific President, Dr. Dan Mote, who has fostered a mindset of excellence across our institution. He is a strong and balanced advocate for what he calls“‘the three A’s of the University ——Academics, the Arts and Athletics’. We have a great Terrapin family. That’s the foundation for all of our success… and the basis for our bright future. It’s a great time to be a Terp.”

ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The University of Maryland is committed to providing the highest quality education to all of its students. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics strives to provide student-athletes excellent opportunities to participate in an intercollegiate athletics program of the highest quality, with the result that their athletics participation becomes an integral and valued component of their total educational experience at the university.

Terrapin student-athletes will find that the same hard work and discipline that has earned them success in athletics competition is also required in the classroom. Balancing the significant time demands and responsibilities required to be a successful student-athlete at the highest collegiate level is no small task. Therefore, as a result of their commitment to representing the university through athletics, Terrapin student-athletes are able to utilize support programs designed to meet their specific needs.

Led by assistant athletics director Anton Goff, the mission of the Academic Support and Career Development Unit (ASCDU) is to provide quality developmental programs and need-based services that will enhance academic progress, facilitate career development, and encourage the psychosocial growth of all UM student-athletes. Don Pearman (right) works with the wrestling team.

The Gossett Academic Support and Career Development Center for Terrapin student-athletes, named for long-time Terp supporters Barry and Mary Gossett, is located in the Comcast Center. It features a study center that includes 25 desktop computers, a tutoring center, a classroom, a CHAMPS/Life Skills resource room and individual offices for six professional academic counselors, a director of ILP programs, an assistant program coordinator and two graduate assistants. In addition, a new academic wing was added to the Gossett football team house last Fall. It features offices for two counselors, three learning specialist, and a graduate assistant; as well as a quiet study area, 29-desk computer lab, classroom, tutor rooms and classroom/lab for the individualized learning program.

Academic courses, programs and services offered by ASCDU include the following:

• Student-athlete orientation• Academic counseling• NCAA academic eligibility monitoring• Academic enrichment and career development presentations and workshops• Accredited tutorial support• Individualized learning program• EDCP 108-K (College learning strategies and skills)• EDCP 108-M (Math learning strategies and skills)• UNIV 100 (First-year transitions to the university)

Maryland GameplanThe Maryland Gameplan is intended to assist

graduating Terrapin student-athletes as they begin the job search process. It is distributed to more than 500 corporations and businesses across the country, in addition to being featured on the M Club website. Prospective employers are introduced to our graduating student-athletes with resume information relative to academic, career and personal achievements. The Maryland Gameplan directory is produced annually in collaboration with the M Club.

Career Networking NightBecause career development is an ongoing process, ASCDU provides a variety of

programs for student-athletes throughout the year. Professional assistance with resume- writing, interviewing skills, graduate school search and job search is readily available to all student-athletes. During the spring semester ASCDU hosts the Career Networking Night, where student-athletes can learn about career interests and career planning. Unlike typical “job fairs,” the purpose of this program is to allow student-athletes to explore multiple career opportunities by speaking directly to individuals in their chosen areas of interest. Employers at the Career Networking Night recognize the marketable qualities student-athletes have gained through athletic participation. Student-athletes learn about opportunities for internships and full-time jobs.

Student-Athlete Advisory CouncilThe Student-Athlete Advisory Council (S.A.A.C.) plays an important role in the

Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. It consists of two representatives from each varsity sport and meets on a regular basis with representatives from the athletic administration. The S.A.A.C. mission is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by developing leadership skills, promoting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image on the Maryland campus, local area and nationally.

CHAMPS/Life Skills ProgramsASCDU houses the NCAA’s (National Collegiate

Athletic Association) Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success (C.H.A.M.P.S.) Life Skills Program. The ASCDU staff, in collaboration with various other Department of Intercollegiate Athletics’ units and campus resources, strives to provide a systematic personal development program designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs. The focus of the program is on the individual academically, athletically and emotionally, and on the changing needs and skills of that individual in the years during college and after graduation. The menu of presentations, workshops and seminars is a comprehensive and balanced system of “life learning” programs promoted for use by each varsity sport team.

Highlights of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Programs:• Support efforts of every student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation• Use athletics as preparation for success in life• Meet the changing needs of student-athletes• Promote respect for diversity among student-athletes• Enhance interpersonal relationships in the lives of student-athletes• Assist student-athletes in building positive self-esteem• Enable student-athletes to make meaningful contributions to their communities• Promote ownership by the student-athletes of their academic, athletic, personal and social

responsibilities• Enhance partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions and their communities for

the purpose of education• Encourage the development of leadership skills

CHAMPS/Life Skills Programs Commitment Statements

Commitment to Personal Development To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills.

Commitment to Career Development To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.

Commitment to Service To engage student-athletes in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities.

Academic Support For Returning Athletes Program

The Academic Support for Returning Athletes Program was created in 1986 to support the academic efforts of former varsity student-athletes at the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1989, ASRAP was assigned by the President’s Office to the Academic Achievements Program and enrolled 40 students that year. As a member of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), the University of Maryland is committed to assisting its former athletes with degree completion. A key component of the program is community outreach. Each returning student completes a “workship” that allows the cost of tuition and fees to be exchanged for community services with youth. In 2002, ASRAP moved into the ASCDU.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCEThe Tradition

Consistency. It’s the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so

competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency.Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 52nd year of

competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it.

Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 91 national champion-ships, including 47 in women’s competition and 44 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 116 times in men’s competition and 57 in women’s action.

If success is best measured in terms of wins and losses, then the ACC is unrivaled in NCAA annals. With Maryland’s victory over Indiana in the 2002 NCAA title game, ACC teams have captured nine NCAA basketball championships, including five over the last 14 years.

No conference has posted a better NCAA Tournament record than the ACC since the NCAA’s inaugural tournament in 1938. The 11 current conference members have posted an NCAA Tournament-best mark of 315-164 for a sterling .647 winning percentage against the nation’s toughest competition.

A year ago, the ACC had two teams - Georgia Tech and Duke - in the Final Four for the second time in four years and fifth time overall. In the 20 years of the 64-team field, the ACC has produced 20 Final Four teams, an average of one per year and seven more than any other conference.

Since 1985, when the NCAA Tournament was expanded to 64 teams, ACC teams have been even more impressive compiling a 203-96 (.679) NCAA record, including 56 “Sweet 16” appearances and 20 Final Four berths. Since 1985, 56 of the 102 ACC teams receiving NCAA berths have won at least two NCAA Tournament games.

Since 1990, the ACC - with a 181-173 record - is the only conference with a winning record against ranked non-conference foes.

North Carolina and Duke lead all ACC schools with three NCAA championships each. NC State has two national titles to its credit and Maryland one. The Tar Heels captured NCAA titles in 1957, 1982 and 1993 while the Blue Devils won their third title in 2001, following back-to-back championships in 1991 and 1992. The Wolfpack walked away with the coveted crown in 1974 and 1983 while the Terps claimed the 2002 national title.

The stature of ACC basketball is no where more clearly defined than by its regional and national television exposure as an all-time high 172 televised games involving ACC teams headline the league’s 2004-05 schedule, including a record-setting 261 appearances. ACC teams are slated to make 132 appearances on national television networks and 79 of the league’s 88 regular season conference games, including 36 on national television networks are scheduled to be televised.

This past year the ACC posted a 14-6 mark in NCAA Tournament play with the six losses by a total of 21 points. For the second time in league history, eight ACC teams took part in post-season play and six of the nine league teams were ranked in the final AP and coaches’ polls. League teams were 107-24 (.816) against non-conference opponents, 13-12 versus ranked teams, including a 3-0 mark against No. 1 ranked teams. The ACC finished the 2003-04 season with the highest regular season RPI rating ever accorded a conference.

2003-04 in ReviewThe 2003-04 academic year concluded

with the league pocketing three more national team titles and six individual NCAA crowns. In all, the ACC has won 48 national team titles over the last 14 years.

The ACC’s 2003-04 national champions were Wake Forest in field hockey, North Carolina in women’s soccer and Virginia in women’s lacrosse. Overall, 66 ACC teams took part in post-season play compiling a 101-66-4 (.596) record.

A total of 169 student-athletes from the ACC earned first, second or third-team All-America honors this past year. In addition, the ACC produced nine national Players of the Year, two national Rookies of the Year and three national Coaches of the Year recipients.

The ACC placed at least one team in the top 10 nationally in 17 sports. In all, 31 ACC teams finished their season with a top 10 ranking.

The ChampionshipsThe conference will conduct championship competition in 25 sports during the 2004-05

academic year - 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954. The conference

did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year. The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor

and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981.

Women’s sports were initiated in 1977 with the first championship meet being held in tennis at Wake Forest University.

Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing.

A HistoryThe Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn

near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws.

The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid

South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline.

Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses.

On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation.

The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964.

The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University.

The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting with the 2005-06 academic year.
