ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MARK POPE

Mark Pope was named IPFW’s director of athletics in July 2001 as the university wastransitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I. That transition was completed on Sept. 1,2002, as IPFW earned NCAA Division I certification — on schedule and on budget.

Since that initial year, Pope has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthyof the name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments are the following:t The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing 11,500 fans in 2003 and

15,000 fans in 2004t Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highest percentage

increase of all Division I institutions in 2003–2004t Women’s volleyball attendance tripled from 2002 to 2003t Men’s volleyball attendance was third nationally in 2004t Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2001 to 2003t The Gates Center and baseball field have undergone significant renovationst Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sportst In cooperation with the IPFW Alumni and Student Government Associations, IPFW’s

Homecoming tradition was createdt The IPFW Stomp Band was organized

Despite these successes, Pope has always focused on the student component of the IPFW student-athlete. Last year Pope’s departmentalgoal of a 3.0 grade-point average was realized, as IPFW student-athletes achieved a 3.01 GPA. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country, andtrack teams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athletics graduates its student-athletes at a rate thatis double that of the IPFW all-campus rate.

Pope holds a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been a member of the Bar of the State of Indiana for27 years. Pope and his wife, Julie, are the proud parents of two sons, Brent and Brad.

Assistant Coach Mark Franke

Assistant Coach Dennis Johnson

Mark Franke has been involved with the IPFW men’s volleyball team in official andunofficial capacities since the team’s formation in 1981. Since 1989, Franke has been avolunteer assistant coach with the team and has been part of all four of IPFW’s NCAAFinal Four appearances. He has no volleyball experience or background, having learnedthe sport on the IPFW bench, and takes pride in being known as the most volleyball-ignorant coach in the NCAA. Still, Franke is an integral part of IPFW’s winning strategybecause of his unique ability to record and analyze an opponent’s tendencies throughoutthe course of a match, and then predicting the next play they will run.

He is well-loved by the players but only because he carries the team’s meal money on the road. Most importantly, he is the host of Channel 56’s Arnie Ball Show, widely

acclaimed as the most unprofessional sports show on Fort Wayne’s cable system.

A 1973 graduate of IPFW with a major in economics, Franke has beenemployed at IPFW for the past 27 years. He currently serves the universityas assistant comptroller, director of financial aid, and student informationsystem director. Franke has also earned two master’s degrees in businessat IPFW.

Coach Franke met and married his wife Tommy while they wereundergraduates at IPFW. Tommy holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees ineducation from IPFW. She is principal and a 7th–8th grade teacher atAscension Lutheran School and serves as official scorekeeper for both themen’s and women’s volleyball teams.

Dennis Johnson has been involved with IPFW volleyball since 1988. From 1988 to 1992,Johnson served as an assistant coach and helped the team to two NCAA Final Fourappearances. After the 1992 season, Johnson left the team to pursue other avenues. In1998, Johnson returned to help the team in an informal capacity and then became anassistant coach again in 1999 and helped the team to another NCAA Final Fourappearance.

Before coming to IPFW, Johnson coached the New Haven (Ind.) high school boys’ andgirls’ volleyball teams from 1977 to 1988. In 1981, his boys’ team posted a 15-5 recordand finished second in the state. From 1981 to 1988, his girls’ teams had an overall record of 150-50, winning the

sectional title once and the conference crown twice. He also receivedCoach of the Year honors once.

At Ball State, hewas a three-year letter winner and a two-time All-Conference selection.Johnson also served as co-captain during the 1968 campaign when theCardinals finished 33-3.

Ryan Perrotte returns as the assistant coach of the IPFW men’s volleyball team. He isoriginally from Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

A former four-year starter for the Mastodons, Perrotte presently holds the block assistrecord at IPFW with 429. He is also the current record holder for highest hittingpercentage in a match (.850 vs. Ohio State, 1999).

Perrotte played an integral role for the team that won the MIVA championship andparticipated in the 1999 NCAA Final Four at UCLA. That same year, he was selected MIVAAll-Conference Second Team. In his four-year playing career for IPFW, Perrotte helped theMastodons amass a 67-33 record.

Since 1999, Perrotte has been a broadcaster with College Access Channel56, providing outstanding play-by-play and insightful color commentary forvarious IPFW athletic events. Perrotte received a bachelor’s degree inbusiness accounting and just recently completed a master’s degree incommunication.

atience is the buzzword for the IPFW men’svolleyball team in the 2005 season. The

Mastodons are coming off a 14-11 season, which sawthem go 12-4 in the MidwestIntercollegiate Volleyball Association, which was good enough for a three-waytie for second place. But IPFW suffered adisappointing loss in the first round ofthe conference tournament.

Gone from this year’s team are seniorsIsaac White and Dustin Sherman. Alsogone, unexpectedly from the team, arethree-year letter winner and startingsetter Dennis Santiago, and sophomoreoutside hitter Christiano Moriera.Santiago made the decision to forego hissenior season to play professionally inhis native Puerto Rico, while Moriera returned to Brazil.

“With Dennis leaving us at a late date, it is going to put us inthe dilemma of who is going to be our setter,” said IPFW headcoach Arnie Ball. “We’ve got three guys who are all trying tobe that guy, but we don’t know what is going to happen comeJanuary.”

Those three guys are junior Mike Randolph, who seems tohave a leg up in the competition. But he will also be pushedby freshmen Dan McNerney and Steve Rogers.

After a couple ofexhibition matches withUC Santa Barbara, it isclear that passing willbe one of the biggestchallenges for IPFW toovercome in 2005. “I’mnot sure I have ananswer for how to fixthat,” Ball said.“Patience is going to bea great virtue for Coach(Ryan) Perrotte,” hejoked.

Along with finding a setter, IPFW will need to make a decisionon who will play the outside opposite of All-American rightside Matt Zbyszewski. “We’ve got a whole bunch of guyscompeting for that outside position but no one who is reallystanding out as a great passer,” Ball noted. “We’ve got some

guys who can bang the ball, we’ve got some guys that canserve the ball, but we don’t have anyone who is trulyoutstanding. So from that standpoint, it is really a very

healthy situation because they arecompeting, but what we need is forsomeone to step forward and reallymake it happen.”

That person could be sophomore JoshCollins. Collins split time last seasonwith Moriera and senior Mitch Dreisbachopposite Zbyszewski in 2004. Collinsaveraged just under two kills per gamewhile digging up 1.20 balls per game.“He’s got the best arm out there, andhe’s really working hard on his passing,”Ball said. “So we hope that he willcontinue to improve as the season goes

along. He’s got a really great attitude about trying to getbetter.”

Dreisbach, who had very similar numbers to Collins lastseason (2.10 kills/1.08 digs per game) will also have a shot towin the outside starting spot. Junior redshirt Nick Belmanshould also see some playing time on the outside along withsophomore Jarrod Quillen and freshman Jason Hemphill.

While there may be some uncertainty about the setterposition and ball handling, the Mastodons have some greatstrengths entering this season. As mentioned, IPFW returnsFirst Team All-American Matt Zbyszewski. Zbyszewski led thenation in kills per game (5.57) and points per game (6.65).But according to Coach Ball, Zbyszewski will have to bepatient and not get frustrated while the younger players growinto their roles. “That will be one of our greatest challenges, because it has showed up already this fall. I know he isfrustrated, as we are, but in the same token, he’s been herelong enough that he has to show the leadership skills and thepatience because it is a long, long season. Lots of greatthings can happen if he is a major contributor. Whether it bewith his serve, or blocking, or whatever, I truly think that thelevel of this team will grow somewhat dramatically or staysomewhat stagnant depending on his approach.”

IPFW will also return three of four players ranked in theblocking category in the MIVA. Junior Serdar Sikca was topsin the league at 1.66 blocks per game. Also ranked werejunior Mike Daiga, Santiago, and Zbyszewski. You might justsee an IPFW freshman on that list this year. “We’ve had areally nice surprise in Josh Stewart,” Ball said. The 6′8″

freshman has impressed Ball so much, that he might justcrack the starting lineup, which could prove interesting atother positions.

“Stewart is going to be areally good blocker. Onceagain, we have to bepatient with him, butSerdar has been reallygood about working withhim and teaching him. Hecatches on quickly, andhe’s a really hard worker. We might move Daiga tothe outside if that positioncontinues to be an issue, sowe think that the blockingpart of our game is goingto get even better.”

Freshman Mike Morici looks to be a lock at libero, but BrockUllrich may also see some action there. Morici, however, is anatural libero. “He’s got a wonderful, wonderful attitude, andthat is what you need at that position. He’s not like someother guys we’ve bounced around saying…‘we need youhere,’ ‘now we need you there.’ Mike has zeroed in on thatposition, and he has worked his tail off.”

The goal Coach Ball (who is two wins shy of 400 for a career)sets every year is to win the NCAA Championship. To do that, the Dons must first win the MIVA. According to Ball, theconference should be wide open this year. “If our guys arepatient, and we get the kind of leadership we need fromMatty (Zbyszewski), we are going to be right in the hunt.Everyone has had some turnover, (and Lewis has beenbanned from post-season play for two years) so with ournucleus of Matty, Serdar, Mike, and Josh, I think we should beright in the middle of the thing.”

Putting the Studentin Student-Athlete

and in 1996, a grade-point average andtest-score sliding index went into effectfor Division I. This scale allows student-athletes with higher grades to qualify withlower test scores and vice versa.

Wanna Play? Know the RulesAny high-school student who is inter-

ested in playing sports at the NCAADivision I or II level should learn aboutthe standards as early as possible. Inaddition, high-school student-athletesshould talk to their guidance counselorsand coaches to learn more.

High-school students can also call theNCAA’s Eligibility Hotline, 800/638-3731.This number features recordings withinformation on a number of freshman eli-gibility topics, including accommoda-tions for students with learning disabili-ties. Students can also order a free copyof the “Guide for the College-BoundStudent-Athlete” by calling the hotlineand following the prompts. Informationabout the recruiting process and aboutinitial-eligibility requirements is availableonline at NCAA Online (www.ncaa.org).

The NCAA’s Initial-Eligibility Clearing-house ensures that student-athletes havemet the academic requirements and cer-tifies their eligibility to play sports asfreshmen. High-school student-athletesaspiring to play Division I or II athletics

should register with the clearinghouseafter completing their junior year.

Clearinghouse information and regis-tration forms are available from high-school guidance counselors; from theNCAA Eligibility Hotline (800/638-3731)or from the NCAA Clearinghouse, P.O.Box 4044, Iowa City, IA 52243-4044, tele-phone 319/337-1492. The clearinghousekeeps registered student-athletesinformed about the qualifications theyhave and have not met concerning fresh-men eligibility.

Once student-athletes are enrolled incollege, there are more academic stan-dards to be met. Student-athletes mustshow continuing progress toward adegree each year, including a minimumnumber of credits passed. From thejunior year on, these standards placegreat emphasis on progress madetoward a specific degree program andensure that student-athletes don’t accu-mulate large numbers of credits thatwon’t help them earn a specific degree.

The NCAA also has established vari-ous scholarship and grant programs toencourage student-athletes to pursuetheir undergraduate and postgraduatedegrees. The Degree-Completion Grantprogram assists those who haveexhausted their eligibility for institutionalfinancial aid. There are also Women’s andEthnic Minority Enhancement programsand several postgraduate scholarshipopportunities.

The end result? Student-athletes arenow more likely than ever to enter theircollegiate programs prepared and readyto succeed athletically and academically.

Over the last few years, the NCAAand its member colleges and uni-

versities have worked hard to emphasizethe student in the term student-athlete.Academic standards and rules have beendeveloped and changed to ensure thatstudent-athletes can excel in the class-room as they do in their sports. The resultof these reforms has been that student-athletes are more likely than ever beforeto succeed in the collegiate environment.

The CHAMPS/Life Skills program wasdeveloped by the NCAA to help preparestudent-athletes for the challenges of lifebeyond the playing field. The focus of theprogram is on commitments viewed ascritical to personal growth: academicexcellence, personal development, ser-vice and career development. In addition,NCAA schools work hard to offer furtheracademic support programs to help stu-dent-athletes prosper. These programsoffer access to study facilities and tutorsas well as monitor student-athleteprogress.

One result of these programs is thatNCAA Division I student-athletes havebeen consistently graduating at a ratehigher than the rest of the student body. For the class entering college in 1990, 56percent of the overall student body atNCAA Division I institutions graduated, while Division I student-athletes graduat-ed at a rate of 58 percent. The rate doesnot include student-athletes who transferto and graduate from another institution.

Minimum academic requirementsthat student-athletes must meet to playsports as freshmen in college are onereason for the higher graduation rates. In1982, a group of college presidents, spon-sored by the American Council onEducation, proposed a set of minimumacademic standards to determine fresh-man athletics eligibility. The first set ofstandards was implemented in 1986.They required that freshmen graduatehigh school with a minimum grade-pointaverage of 2.000 in 11 core academiccourses and a minimum standardizedtest score of 700 on the SAT or 15 on theACT to be eligible to play sports andreceive an athletics scholarship.

Five years ago, the number of requiredcore academic courses was raised to 13
