A b o u t t h e C o n d u c t o rLaura Sindberg is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Education at DePaul University, and Ph.D. candidate at Northwestern University, where she is pursuing a Doctorate in Music Education. Her research interests include comprehensive musicianship, conducting, gender and the music experience, philosophy, assessment, and professional development.

Prior to embarking on her studies at Northwestern, Laura Sindberg taught public school music in Milwaukee (her beloved hometown) and Waukesha, Wisconsin. Most recently, she was the Director of Bands at Central Middle School in Waukesha. She also served as an adjunct faculty member at Carroll College, also in Waukesha.

During her tenure at Central, Ms. Sindberg initiated the Central Bands Commissioning Project. The Project lasted over six years, and provided new works for young band students as well as opportunities for students to better understand the process of composing through meeting composers. Each spring, a new work for young band was premiered by the Central students. Commissioned composers include Pierre LaPlante, Rick Kirby, Hugo Hartig, Jack Stamp, and Timothy Broege.

In addition to working as an adjudicator, clinician and presenter in Wisconsin and around the Midwest, Ms. Sindberg served on the Wisconsin Music Educators Association Council as Public Relations Chair. She has been appointed to the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship through Performances (CMP) Steering Committee (where she continues to serve) and the Arts Propel Leadership Academy of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Ms. Sindberg serves on the Advisory Board of Band Quest, of the American Composers Forum, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has written for Music Educators Journal, Teaching Music, and the Wisconsin School Musician.

Scott Hagen was appointed director of The Concordia College Band in 2004, the seventh conductor in the organization’s 105-year history. In addition to guiding the band program at Concordia, Hagen teaches conducting and trumpet, and serves as the primary mentor for future band directors in Concordia’s music education program. Prior to his position at Concordia, Hagen served as Director of Bands at the University of Utah, where he was named the university's Teacher of the Year in 1995 and awarded the College of Fine Arts Student’s Choice Teaching Award in 2004. He led the Wind Ensemble to national prominence and also directed the marching band and the official Olympic Spirit Band for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Hagen is a national leader in wind band conducting, having premiered and/or recorded works by John Corigliano, Eric Whitacre, Frank Ticheli, and Kenneth Hesketh, among other notable composers. A member of the College Band Directors National Association, MENC and the Minnesota Music Educators Association, he is an active guest clinician and a strong advocate for band programs regionally and nationally. Hagen received his Bachelor of Music degree from Concordia College and his Master of Music degree from the University of Minnesota. His conducting teachers have included J. Robert Hanson, Frank Bencriscutto, and Paul J. Christiansen.

M e s s a g e f r o m t h e M B D A P r e s i d e n t On behalf of the members of the Minnesota Band Directors Association, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2005 MBDA Honor Bands Concert. I am pleased that you are present to witness the accomplishments of these outstanding young musicians. MBDA is gratefully indebted to many individuals for making the 2005 Honor Bands weekend an overwhelming success: guest conductors Laura Sindberg and Scott Hagen for guiding, shaping, and inspiring the Honor Band musicians; Hopkins High School students, staff, faculty, and administration for hosting this event; Hopkins faculty Bill Bell, Nora Tycast and Sandy Merry for coordinating the facilities and resources here at Hopkins High School; Honor Band adjudicators and section coaches for their invaluable expertise and guidance; Minnesota Music Educators Association office staff for coordinating the audition materials; Schmitt Music and Pepper of Minneapolis for donating the music performed by the honor bands; Honor Band Audition Chair Karen Frawley and Honor Band Event Chair David Haaversen for coordinating this entire event; the band directors of Honor Band members for recommending and preparing their students for this event; parents of Honor Band members for encouraging, supporting, and nurturing a love of music in these young musicians; Honor Band members for their interest, passion, and commitment to excellence in music making. This afternoon’s concert allows us the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of these Honor Band musicians, and also to affirm the critical role that the Arts play in the education of all students throughout the state. The Arts are essential to education in Minnesota! Dr. Scott A. Jones - President, Minnesota Band Directors Association
