A renewed level of excitement was evident aroundthe boathouse this fall. The men's crew showed signs ofreturning to pre-2005 levels of performance. Althoughto most schools a 4th place finish at the 2005 Dad VailRegatta would be a thrill—to Temple it represented a bigletdown. It was the first time in 22 years that the Owlshad not finished either 1st or 2nd in the men's VarsityHeavyweight Eight. This was obviously unacceptable toveteran coach Gavin White as well as his student-athletes.

The Owls are excited to add University ofPittsburgh transfer Chris Thomas to their roster. "Hisspeed and strength are impressive and his presence isnoticed," said White. Graduate student Peter Gostlingcomes to Temple after spending several years strokingthe British National 23 and under Eight. Gostling is athree time Henley champion who stroked the BritishNational Team Four with coxswain at the WorldChampionships in Barcelona Spain in 2004.

White anticipates strong leadership making a hugedifference for the team this year. Senior co-captains TJBurke and Mike Shisler are determined to leave the pro-gram on top. They have not been shy about expressingtheir displeasure when the effort has fallen off.

Temple has a promising sophomore class. Thesophomore quartet of Bill Gennaro, Tom Haubrich,Bob Proesto and James Harding won the IRA Regatta inthe Freshman 4 last season. The foursome has had anoutstanding fall season, placing first at the FrostbiteRegatta and second at the Braxton Regatta in the Varsity8 race. Other outstanding fall performances have also

been turned in by sophomores Don Powers and JoeWelsh, juniors Chris Bushek and Dante Cammarata, andsenior Andy Mantzoukas. Bushek is described by hiscoach as having "a heart as big as his body", whileCammarata is consistently among the top performers onthe ergometer.

Temple is fortunate to also have a very young butaccomplished group of coxswains this season. Bothsophomore Rory Roberts and freshman Tom Goldnerare newcomers and have been neck and neck for a seatin the varsity eight."The athletes have been an absolutepleasure to work with as they are pushing themselvesever harder each week. The staff can feel it, the athletescan feel it, and come spring the parents, friends, andalums will see it," said White.

The Varsity Eight finished 4th at fall 2005's NavyDay, improving on its 10th place finish during the 2004-05 season. The Owls finished 3rd among collegiateeights at the Head of the Schuylkill, trailing behind thefirst place finisher by only one-half second. The V8improved to 15th place at the Princeton Chase, improv-ing on its 22nd place finish last year. The Varsity Eightwon the Frostbite Regatta over Marietta. The Owls'schedule is challenging with trips to the San Diego CrewClassic and Melbourne FL for the Keuper Cup, theMurphy and Knecht Cups locally, and dual meets withboth Georgetown (DC) and Syracuse (Phila)."Obviously, we still have a ways to go but progress hasdefinitely been evident," says White.

2005 FALL RESULTS

The Temple University crews have the honor ofhaving the Schuylkill River as their home course. TheSchuylkill, esteemed as one of the elite centers of row-ing in the United States and an ideal training venue, provides the Temple crews the opportunity of trainingand racing with and against some of the finest rowersin the world. The Schuylkill is set aside exclusively forrowing.

The Schuylkill has been Temple men’s crew homecourse since the University initiated the varsity rowingprogram in 1966, and the women’s crew home since1988. Owl rowers, as well as Olympic level and highschool rowers, train on the Schuylkill year-round, with-out interruptions from high-powered boats. As one ofthe most prestigious centers of rowing in the United

States, the Schuylkill has been the home to manyOlympic champions, including John B. Kelly Sr., andJr., respectively.

The Temple boat house and the PhiladelphiaCanoe Club were built in the 1920s to serve as theOlympic training camp. It is purposely situated at themidpoint of the Schuylkill’s 2000-meter race course. The Schuylkill flows through one of Philadelphia’smost picturesque areas. The highly acclaimed setting isnothing short of spectacular at night, with the famed“boathouse row” outlined and lit up in white lights.

The Schuylkill is home of the largest collegiateregatta in the world, the Dad Vail Regatta, as well asthe largest scholastic regatta in the world, theStotesbury Cup.
