The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, founded in 1885, has a proud heritage of excellence in preparinggraduates to serve as leaders in the professions of engineering and science. South Dakota School of Mines was recently named one of America's100 Best College Buys for the 8th consecutive year. Costs to attendare approximately $8,373 for tuition, fees, room and board for SouthDakota residents and approximately $11,000 for all out-of-state resi-dents. Tech's 2003-04 graduates averaged starting salaries of morethan $48,000. Job placement for graduates in their career fields or |$pursuing graduate or professional degrees is 90%.

Each year over 100 companies visit the Tech campus to employ itsgraduates and to offer attractive co-operative (co-op) and internshipopportunities to juniors and seniors. Approximately 81% of eachyear's senior class participate in co-op/internship programs. This fallthe annual career fair attracted over 1,000 students who visited with 84company representatives from 26 states.

SDSM&T is located in Rapid City which lies between the mysterious South Dakota Badlands and the magnificent beau-ty of the Black Hills. Only a short distance from the campus is the majestic Mt. Rushmore and the emerging Crazy HorseMonument. With 56,000 residents Rapid City offers many diverse and interesting attractions for college students.Protection from the adjacent mountains produces unexpectedly mild winters, when it is common for temperatures torisen into the 50's and 60's. The Black Hills offer Tech students such activities as hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding,camping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and mountain climbing.

PresidentDR. CHARLES RUCH

Dr. Charles P. Ruch became the 17th President of the South Dakota Schoolof Mines and Technology on July 1, 2003.

Ruch holds master's and doctorate degrees in education from NorthwesternUniversity and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from The College of Wooster(Ohio). Before joining South Dakota Tech, Dr. Ruch served as President atBoise State University for 10 years. Previously, Dr. Ruch spent 19 years atVirginia Commonwealth University, first as an associate dean and dean, andas provost and vice president. His first university assignment came at theUniversity of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair.

An active participant in higher education organizations, Dr. Ruch has chairedthe Urban and Metropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges andUniversities. He also has served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athleticconferences, and as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.

Dr. Ruch's professional activities also include participation in the American Council on Education, theAmerican Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of State Universities andLand Grant Colleges, and the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education. Dr. Ruch has writtenand edited numerous articles, book reviews, and book chapters, and has delivered Congressional testimony.

In every community he has joined, Dr. Ruch has been active in organizations and efforts to make those com-munities better places to live. He has continued that effort in Rapid City, especially when it comes to econom-ic development. In that critical area, he has prioritized using campus expertise to build an even brighterregional economic future. Since joining Tech, Dr. Ruch also has opened lines of communication with the com-munity through a bi-weekly e-letter, begun a strategic planning process, and created numerous partnershipsto improve Tech, the community, the state, and the region.

Dr. Ruch credits his success to the ongoing support from his wife, Sally, their four grown children, and threegrandchildren.

Athletic DirectorHUGH WELSH

Hugh Welsh retired after the 2005 season as head basketball coach at SouthDakota Tech but continued his duties as athletic director. He oversees an 11sport program that has approximately 150 athletes competing. One of the chal-lenges is the future of the DAC Conference and Welsh has worked with fellowDAC athletic directors this year on what changes may lie ahead.

A graduate of Valley City State, he earned his masters degree at theUniversity of Mary. He joined the Tech staff in 1986 and ended a 33 year coach-ing career with 545 wins. His wife Heidi is the head volleyball coach at RapidCity Central. He has one son, Sean, who is 19 and is a budding sports journal-ist, having covered games and written feature stories for the Rapid City Journal.

Head CoachBARB FELDERMAN

Barb Felderman enters her25th season as LadyHardrocker basketballcoach. She has guidedteams to berths in the NAIANational Tournament in eightof the last 11 years, includ-ing appearances in the FinalFour in 1998 and 1999.Felderman has coached

Tech to a 353-292 (.547)overall record, and to ateam record 28 wins duringthe 1997-98 season. Shehas coached seven SDICChampionship teams and

added DAC-10 titles in 2002 and 2005.A native of Doland, SD, and a graduate of Northern State

University, Felderman spent eight years coaching and teach-ing at Kadoka and Pierre High Schools. She served as headsoftball coach at Ball State prior to coming to Tech in 1981.She was the Hardrocker volleyball coach until 1993 and wonseven SDIC titles. While earning her Masters at the Universityof Wyoming, Felderman served as assistant basketball andsoftball coach.

Barb and her Lady Hardrocker basketball team have heldnumerous clinics and camps to teach young boys and girls thefundamentals of basketball and teach them the true spirit ofcompetition.

Felderman was honored as South Dakota College Coach-of-the-Year by sportswriters in 1991 and 1998 and has beennamed SDIC Basketball Coach-of-the Year three times. TheLady Hardrockers have been named South Dakota Women'sCollege team of the year on two occasions by the SouthDakota Sportswriters Association.

Assistant CoachTOM MAHON

Tom Mahon begins his fifthseason assisting CoachFelderman with the LadyHardrocker basketball pro-gram. Tom has a wealth ofsuccessful coaching experi-ence, most recently at Ft.Hays State in Kansas.Mahon coached seven con-secutive winning seasonsand compiled an overallrecord of 137-87 with theLady Tigers. He won twoRocky Mountain AthleticConference Championshipsand his 1994-95 team fin-

ished with the second best record in school history (23-6).Prior to coaching Ft. Hays, Mahon was head coach for twoseasons at Eastern Montana. He is married to the former PatGarber, who is School of Mines Vice President and Dean ofStudents.

Assistant CoachLORI COBLE

Lori Coble has been avaluable member of theHardrocker athletic programfor the last 23 years as thewomen's assistant basketballcoach. Her dedication to theLady Hardrocker teams andhelpful coaching insightshave been a big part ofTech's success over theyears.

A native of Presho, SD,Coble graduated fromDakota State where sheplayed four years for theLady Trojans and wasrecently inducted into the DSU athletic Hall of Fame. Shecoached at Plankinton for one season before moving to RapidCity. Coble is a member of the SDSM&T faculty as a biologyinstructor.

Assistant CoachMARIA CADWALLADER

Maria (Possum)Cadwallader returns to theSchool of Mines as an assis-tant coach for the LadyHardrocker basketball pro-gram. A 1996 Tech graduatein industrial engineering,Maria brings a wealth ofexperience as a former LadyHardrocker player along withher knowledge of the school.

She was the point guardand leader of Tech's firstever NAIA NationalTournament team in 1994.She achieved NAIAHonorable Mention All-American status, was the SDICConference Most Valuable Player her senior year and holdsschool records for assists in a season (217) and in a game(19).

Following graduation she worked in the construction divi-sions as District Sales Manager for Ingersoll Rand (1996-2000)and as Sales Manager for Herc-U-Lift, Inc (2000-2005).Maria and husband Ryan, (a 1996 Tech civil engineering grad-uate and former football player with receiving records at Tech),relocated to Rapid City from Minneapolis with their two yearold son Jakob.

SCHOLARS AWARDThe South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is the

recipient of the Dakota Athletic Conference Scholars Award.The Scholars Award goes to the school with the highest per-centage of athletes honored as DAC Scholars. The Hardrockersplaced 38% of their athletes on the academic honors list. As awhole, the DAC Conference had 628 of its athletes on thehonor list. Student-athletes must earn a grade point average of3.25 or better to earn the conference academic recognition.

Melanie received Honorable Mention All- DAC10 and was named the distinctive Dakota 10 " Freshman of the Year" award. Her passion shows through her every move. Shelead the team in many categories. A definite 'spark plug' and her best basketball is yet to be played. Mel's sister Stacie was anNAIA Ail-American.
