April 6 marks the beginning of spring football for theWarriors and the beginning of what Head Coach JuneJones hopes to be one of the most productive seasonsin recent years.

This spring, Jones hopes to get a glimpse of whatthe future holds for a Warrior offense with great poten-tial.

“We’re going to use the spring to refine and finetune some things on offense,” Jones said. “I think offen-sively this year we have a chance to be better thanwe’ve ever been.”

All but one starter returns on offense, includingall-WAC quarterback Timmy Chang who takes aim atbecoming the nation’s all-time leading passer. Changneeds 2,218 yards to surpass Ty Detmer’s NCAA passingrecord of 15,031 yards and is on pace to do it on oraround the sixth game of the season.

“We’ve got pretty much everybody back exceptfor (wide receiver) Jeremiah (Cockheran) so we feel likewe ought to be pretty good,” Jones said. “So we’ll takemore of a look at some other players and hold somekey guys out in order to give the other guys someopportunities.”

Chang’s chances are promising since the entireoffensive line returns along with a corps of seasonedreceivers, including all-WAC performer Chad Owens, wholed the WAC in both receptions per game (7.72, 2ndnationally) and receiving yards per game (103.1, 8thnationally) last season.

“We had a young offensive line last season andnow they’re all back with experience, so I think it couldbe one of the best we’ve had as a group overall,” Jonessaid. “Our receivers are all back as well, except forJeremiah, but we have Nate Ilaoa back from injury andwe’ll try some different things with some of the otherplayers. Between the guys this spring along with thenew guys in the fall, we’ll to try and find a replace-ment for Jeremiah.”

Britton Komine, Gerald Welch, Nate Ilaoa andJason Rivers also return with a host of playing experi-ence.

Komine played in all but one game and finishedthird on the team with 53 catches for 602 yards andfive touchdowns. He also ranked eighth in the WACaveraging 4.08 catches per game. Welch stepped intothe starting role after Ilaoa went down with a kneeinjury and started 13 games at “Y” receiver. He finishedwith 43 catches for 462 yards and four touchdowns, two in a win over Rice (Sept. 27). Ilaoa is back fromrehab after suffering a knee injury in the season openeragainst Appalachian State. Ilaoa had a stellar season asa freshman in 2002 catching 46 passes for 532 yardsin 12 games. Rivers returns to build on a standoutrookie season appearing in 12 games as a true fresh-man. He finished with 48 catches for 594 yards andfive touchdowns and capped off the season with sevencatches for a career-high 143 yards and three touch-downs in a win against Houston in the Sheraton Hawai‘iBowl (Dec. 25).

On defense, Jones plans to utilize a host of play-ers with limited game experience to fill the void left bykey players, nine to be exact, lost to graduation.

Gone are four first-team all-WAC performers, including WAC Defensive Player of the Year Travis LaBoy,tackle Isaac Sopoaga, cornerback Kelvin Millhouse andsafety Hyrum Peters.

Five other starters, including tackle LanceSamuseva, linebackers Keani Alapa and Chad Kalilimoku, and safety David Gilmore, have also departed leavinghuge gaps to fill in the Warrior defense. According toJones, there are a wealth of players who have beenwaiting for their chance at playing time.

“We’ve had guys redshirting and waiting for theirchance, and they’ll get their chance,” Jones said. “I don’tthink we can replace Travis and Isaac right off the bat,but I do know that we have guys with the potential tobe better but are unproven on game day. We have afew tackles that are going to be very good.”

One of those tackles is Lui Fuga who is awaitinga medical hardship waiver. Fuga amassed 21 tackles, including four for-a-loss (-15) and two sacks (-11) in asupporting role. Abu Ma‘afala also has a year of playingtime under his belt and recorded 10 tackles, includingfour for-a-loss (-14) and two sacks (-11).

On the outside, Mel Purcell returns to better hissteady play a year ago. Purcell played in 11 games andfinished with 40 tackles (23 solo), including five tacklesfor-a-loss (-24) and 3.5 sacks (-22). He was also secondon the team with nine quarterback hurries in a sup-porting role.

Darrell Tautofi, Karl Noa, Tony Akpan, KilaKamakawiwo‘ole and Ikaika Alama-Francis are all also inthe mix coming off the edge. All have been in the sys-tem, but have no significant playing time.

Ikaika Curnan is the sole returning starter atlinebacker and has moved to the middle to serve asthe heart of the defense. Curnan, an honorable mentionall-WAC performer, led the team in tackles with 121(71 solo), tied for second on the squad in tackles-for-loss with 12 (-45) and sacks with 4.0 (-24). He wasseventh in the WAC in tackles per game (8.6) and post-ed a career-high 15 tackles, including one sack (-4) ina win over Alabama (Nov. 29) as a sophomore on theweakside.

Returning part-timers Lincoln Manutai and ChadKapanui will fill the voids on the strong and weak sidespots. Manutai is awaiting a medical hardship waiverafter recording 22 tackles in limited action last season.Kapanui, a full-timer on special teams, amassed 17 tack-les in limited action on defense.

The defensive secondary is anchored by the mostunderrated player in the league in Abraham Elimimian. The three-year starter at corner was named honorablemention all-WAC and co-led the team with four inter-ceptions. He also had 10 pass break ups and finishedfifth on the team in tackles with 78 (59 solo).

“I think Abraham Elimimian is one of the bestcorners I’ve ever had,” Jones said. “As the scouts beginto look at his jtape, I think he’ll be rated very highwithin the next year. He has a chance to be a verygood player.”

On the flip side, Jones said filling the shoes ofKelvin MIllhouse will be tough.

“We need to replace Kelvin who has started forus for a few years,” Jones said. “But this is an opportu-nity for the other guys to take their shot.”

Kenny Patton, also awaiting a medial hardshipwaiver, returns after recording 10 tackles as a truefreshman in 2002, while Omega Hogan takes his shot atplaying time after compiling 11 tackles as a force onspecial teams.

Leonard Peters used his playing time last seasonto learn the quickness of the college game and returnsto free safety. Peters appeared in 13 games and fin-ished with 66 tackles (40 solo), five PBUs, one fumblerecovery and one blocked kick. He finished the seasonwith a career-high 12 tackles against Houston in theSheraton Hawai‘i Bowl (Dec. 25).

Matt Manuma will also see time this spring atfree safety after serving as a full-timer on specialteams.

The task of replacing the all-WAC and all-purposeHyrum Peters at strong safety is in the hands of LonoManners this spring. Manners is a full-timer on specialteams who recorded nine tackles in limited action.

The Warriors don’t plan on spending too muchtime on special teams this spring. Both place-kickersJustin Ayat and Nolan Miranda return. Ayat served asthe starting place-kicker through the first 10 games andconverted 14-of-22 field goal attempts (64 percent) and30-of-38 PAT attempts. He has become the second-all-time leading scorer at UH with 284 points in 40games, trailing all-time leader Jason Elam by 111points. Miranda inherited the starting job towards theend of the year and was 3-of-5 on field goal attemptsand converted 21-of-22 PAT attempts.

Kurt Milne and Tim Wright also return at punter.Milne recorded 63 punts for an average of 39.7 yardsand placed 19 kicks inside the 20-yard line. Wrightpunted twice and averaged 36.5 yards per punt.

The 2004 schedule, at first glance, looks like aneasier task than last year’s. The Warriors travel to fourgames rather than the six a year ago. However, two ofthose road games are in the toughest WAC stadiums, including Fresno State and Boise State.

“It’s always tough to play at Fresno,” Jones said.“And I think they’ll be better this year because theirquarterback is healthy and they are very well-coached.And we haven’t proven we can beat Boise State sinceI’ve been here so that is a challenge as well.”

Jones and the Warriors begin with Florida Atlantic,a team that will participate for the first time at theNCAA Division I-A level. But Jones said it could bedeceiving.

“There’s a big uncertainty in our first gamebecause Florida Atlantic is a lot better than everyonethinks they are,” Jones said. “And then we have to turnaround and face the wishbone against Rice after that sothere’s two unknowns there, but I think if we can getby and survive the first three games, I think we canhave a chance to hit our stride.

SPRING PROSPECTUS 6 2004 WARRIOR FOOTBALL

Hawai‘i head coach June Jonesis entering his sixth season atthe helm of the Warrior foot-ball program and owns a 40-25 overall, 24-15 WesternAthletic Conference (WAC)record, and led the Warriors totheir third bowl game in five

seasons in the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl last December. His leadership at UH has elevated the football

program on a national scale. In his first season, Jonesled the Warriors to the biggest turnaround in NCAA his-tory and guided the Warriors to their first WAC titlesince 1992, breaking a 24-game WAC road losing streakspanning seven years.

Jones and the Warriors also earned an invitationto the Jeep Oahu Bowl where they defeated highly-tout-ed Oregon State, 23-17, for the program's first bowl vic-tory since 1992.

The 2000 Warriors finished with a 3-9 overallrecord and 2-6 WAC record, good enough to tie forsixth-place.

On Feb. 22, 2001, Jones was involved in a nearfatal car accident that kept him off the field untilAugust 2001. The Warriors were off to a slow start in2001, but rebounded to win eight of their last ninegames and finish 9-3.

Jones' run-and-shoot offense has led the WAC inpassing offense and fin-ished in the Top 5 inthe nation the last fourseasons under Jones. In1999, the Warriors ledthe WAC in both passingoffense and totaloffense.

Jones has pro-duced a train of NFLprospects in just threeshort years at the colle-giate football level. Atotal of eight Warriorshave been drafted byNFL teams and at leastone in each of Jones'five seasons at UH. Mostnotably, wide receiverAshley Lelie was chosenin the first round bythe Denver Broncos inthe 2002 NFL Draft, theschool's highest pickever. Another handful ofplayers are also expect-ed to be chosen in this

year's NFL Draft. Jones has coached five All-Americansand 62 all-conference players.

Jones' coaching career began in 1983 as quarter-backs coach at Hawai‘i after a six-year professionalplaying career in the NFL and Canadian Football League(CFL). After a year under then Hawai‘i head coach DickTomey, Jones moved on to coach the wide receivers forthe USFL's Houston Gamblers. His first job as an offen-sive coordinator came a year later, 1985, with theDenver Gold of the World Football League.

In 1987, Jones got his first break at coaching inthe NFL as quarterbacks coach with the Houston Oilers. He went on to gain experience as an assistant coachwith the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons over the nextfive years.

It was in 1994 when Jones got his first shot as ahead coach when the Falcons offered him the top job.As head man in Atlanta, Jones guided the Falcons tothe playoffs in 1995 when they posted a 9-7 recordand quarterback Jeff George passed for a franchiserecord 4,143 yards.

After three seasons as head coach in Atlanta,Jones moved to San Diego where he took on the dutiesas the Chargers' quarterbacks coach under KevinGilbride. A short time later, Jones was named interimhead coach of the Chargers where he stayed untilreturning to Hawai‘i in December 1998.

GAME 2 • SEPT. 13, 2003LOS ANGELES MEMORIAL COLISEUM (73,654)

1 2 3 4 OT FinalHawai‘i 3 3 7 19 – 32USC 3 28 21 9 – 61

LOS ANGELES – The University of Hawai‘i Warrior football team suffered it first loss of the season toNo. 4 USC, 61-32, Sept. 13 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. USC scored 42 unanswered points inthe second and third quarters and capitalized on various Warrior miscues in the runaway.

The crowd of 73,654 marked only the third time the Warriors have ever played in front ofmore than 70,000 in the program's history and was the second largest in school history.

The Trojan defense, known as the "Wild Bunch II," got the rally started when cornerbackRonald Nunn picked up a UH fumble and returned it 38 yards for the game's first touchdown earlyin the second quarter. The pass looked to be incomplete from Warrior quarterback Timmy Chang toGerald Welch, but officials ruled it a fumble, and seemingly sparked the Trojan attack.

Three more Trojan touchdowns followed in the second quarter, including one on a 33-yardcatch and run from wide receiver Mike Williams. USC held a 31-6 lead at the half and came out ofthe locker room with three straight scores to lead by as many as 46 points.

The USC offense gained 418 total yards, 164 rushing and 264 passing, and kept the Warrioroffense out of the end zone for close to three quarters. UH ended with 462 yards, 44 more thanUSC, and also held a 26-21 first down edge, but most of those numbers came after the game waswell in hand for the Trojans.

Hawai‘i’s Justin Ayat kicked two field goals in the first half. The Warriors finally got in theendzone at the 1:25 mark in the third quarter with the game out of reach. Chang capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 5-yard pass to Chad Owens, his first of the 2003 season.

1 2 3 4 OT FinalHawai‘i 7 7 8 0 – 22UNLV 7 17 9 0 – 33

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The University of Hawai‘i Warrior football team found little luck in Las Vegas witha 33-22 loss to UNLV Sept. 19 at Sam Boyd Stadium. The third largest home crowd in UNLV footballhistory (34,287), about 8,500 of them in UH green, saw a mistake-prone Warrior squad drop theirsecond straight road game.

Despite out-gaining the Rebels 417-296 for the game, Hawai‘i sealed its fate with sixturnovers, which included three first-half fumbles and three second-half interceptions.

Timmy Chang, who finished 37-of-61 for 363 yards, was hot early. The junior quarterbackthrew two touchdowns, one a 38-yard bomb to Britton Komine and the other an 8-yard strike toChad Owens, to give UH a 14-7 lead five minutes into the second quarter.

But UH turnovers and penalties began to build up. The Rebels took advantage of a myriad ofWarrior miscues and parlayed them into 17 points. A mishandled snap on a punt in the first quarterand two Warrior fumbles in the second quarter resulted in two Rebel touchdowns and a field goal.UNLV took a 21-14 lead when tailback Dominique Dorsey broke free for a 36-yards touchdown run.A UH fumble late in the first half set up the Rebels for a 20-yard field goal and a 24-14 lead atthe break.

UNLV added a field goal out of the locker room, but Hawai‘i struck back with a quarterbackshuffle. Chang took the Warriors down the field and See Poumele handled the red zone duties.Poumele found a seam on the left side and scored his first career touchdown on a 7-yard run. UNLVblocked the PAT attempt but backup quarterback Jason Whieldon snagged the pigskin and took itinto the endzone to cut the Rebel lead to 27-22.

UH, however couldn’t capitalize on their new-found momentum. UNLV took a 33-22 lead intothe fourth quarter on 45- and 43-yard field goals by Pieffer. The Warrior defense stepped up with abatted ball by Isaac Sopoaga that landed in the arms of defensive tackle Lui Fuga, giving Hawai‘i theball at the Rebel 21-yard line. But the Warriors came up empty when Justin Ayat missed a 35-yardfield goal wide left. Despite playing brilliantly for much of the game, Chang was unable to lead acomeback, as three drives were stalled by Rebel interceptions.

RENO, NEV. – The Warriors arrived with hopes sealing an invitation to the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl andsecuring a Western Athletic Conference championship showdown against Boise State, but left 24-14 vic-tims to Nevada in a WAC contest Nov. 15 at Mackay Stadium.

A crowd of 15,268, including a small Hawai‘i contingent, braved light rains and sub-40 tem-peratures to watch the Warriors score 14 points in the third, but go scoreless in the remaining threequarters of play and snap a four-game win streak that began Oct. 11 against Fresno State.

Hawai‘i squandered several scoring opportunities in the first half when the offense managed todrive the ball inside the Wolf Pack 32-yard line three times, but came away empty on two missedfield goals and a failed fourth down attempt. The play was indicative of the game as the Warrioroffense struggled throughout, managing just 16 first downs and a season-low 358 total yards.

Nevada took a 6-0 halftime lead on two field goals (28 and 42) by Damon Fine. The Warrior defense came out of the locker room ready to play. Abrahamn Elimimian inter-

cepted Nevada quarterback Andy Heiser to give the Warriors the ball. One play later Hawai‘i took itsfirst lead (7-6) on a 39-yard pass from Timmy Chang to a wide-open Chad Owens at the 10:48mark in the third quarter.

One play after that, Heiser fumbled the ball and Warrior defensive end Travis LaBoy picked itup and jaunted 16-yards to the "house" to put the Warriors up, 14-6.

The Wolf Pack answered by scoring 15 straight points, nine off Warrior turnovers with touch-downs by running back Chance Kretschmer and defensive tackle Derek Kennard on an 11-yard inter-ception return.

Fine added two more fiewld goals before Chang tossed his second interception of the game onHawai‘i’s next possession to give Nevada the ball in Warrior territory, but the defense came to therescue, a sack by safety David Gilmore pushed the Wolf Pack back and forced Fine to miss his firstfield goal on the day, a 47-yard attempt.

Hawai‘i had two more possessions, but the drives fell short, the last on a completion to ChadOwens to tie his career-high and school record 12 catches. Owens caught for 164 yards, his secondconsecutive 100-yard game and third of the season, and added 16 yards on punt returns.

The Warrior defense held Nevada to 143 yards rushing, and 312 yards of total offense, closeto 100 yards below the Wolf Pack average.
