A Newsletter from Mind Body & Spirit Hi Everyone, Our Expo was great! We had many new faces stop by and it was great meeting you all. Thanks to all who attended and helped make it a glorious day! Hey, has everybody seen the latest billboard on division? If you come in and tell us what was on the billboard, and where exactly you saw it, we have a small gift for you. Bonus: Tell us what “Kerfuffle” means and where the word originated and get 5% off a single item purchased that day. This time around we are sharing the billboard with “The Great Times Bistro”. Don’t forget to stop by the Bistro after or before a visit to MBS and pick up a great smoothie or coffee or perhaps stay for a wonderful meal. Come on in and see what’s new. As always we have gotten some new things and replenished the favorites. Our cold cast bronze fairies are on their way! They are beautiful! Also, we have some very nice magnetic bracelets and necklaces that have an abundance of uses. They have no latches and can be used by all, including the elderly and those with arthri- tis. They can be used as decoration on hats, altars, vehicles, etc. The magnetic parts are magnetic hematite. Come and use your imagination on a truly unique item. Made for adults, but inexpensive enough for kids. There are so many holidays coming up we want to remind everyone about the wish box. It’s simple and it’s a great way to get a gift that will be both appreciated and loved (and no need to stand in lines for returning). It works just like a “low-tech” registry, you or a loved one puts their name in the box with what they would like from MBS, the buyer then looks to see what they want. Any questions just be sure and ask us. It’s that time of year again and Merri and I, along with our families, will be taking a break between Dec. 25th and Jan 3rd. The shop will be closed but we will still check our messages and email in case there is something urgent for us. When we come back we will be refreshed and ready to make 2005 another year to learn in, laugh in, and love in. Check out our Wish Box! Great Idea for Holiday

Birthdays, and other Special Occasions

hint!

Totem

Animals

Many have heard about the totems that stand upright, carved with many heads of gods, goddesses, birds, animals, etc. So, what are animal totems? “A totem is

any natural object, being, or animal with which we feel closely associated and whose phenom-ena and energy are related to our life in some way”. This quote came from a book called “Animal Speak Workbook” by Ted Andrews. We have this book on hand and it is not only simple and informational but is also a work-book that helps one find their own totem ani-mals. Sometimes animals come into our lives only briefly but still have a powerful message for us. Others are with us as quiet guardians or mystics throughout all of our lives. This book explains the five basic categories of totems and how they fit into our life. One chapter is devoted to understanding messages from the animal kingdom and your own per-sonal totems, while others speak of feather magic, shapeshifting and animal communica-tion. Learn the power of domestic animals, and find out how to make your own Spirit Mask and Medicine Shield that represents your own to-tem. Other books that compliment this one are Animal-Speak and Animal-Wise, also by Ted Andrews. These books take a look at each ani-mal and explains the lessons and messages that they may have for you if they have come into your life. Good Reading!!

Jaspers This is an article originally printed in the Sept/Oct 2003 newsletter with a new ending included that has a list of our new Jaspers. Jasper is a patterned form of chalcedony that is found in al-most all colors. It is known as the “supreme nurturer” as it will con-nect one with earth’s protective energies. It is also a sustaining stone used on long fasts to keep energy high or given to one on an extended hospital stay. It helps to relieve stress and pain while bal-ancing yin-yang energy. This stone helps to reduce fear and guilt, and was worn by Shaman to help with their magic. Jaspers are ex-ceptional stones for protection during travel, especially those with yellow in the coloring. Red Jasper has traditionally been used for re-birth and health, and it’s energy helps one to understand that all choice is singularly ones responsibility. Jasper with blue in the stone connects one with the “after” worlds. All Jaspers are protective and supportive during all travel, in-cluding astral journeying. It is placed over the heart and sacral chakras just prior to astral travel. Three Jaspers that are particularly beautiful are Picture Jasper, Dalmation Jasper, and Wonderstone. Picture Jasper exhibits messages and/or “pictures” from the past and enables understanding of “unknown” advanced civilizations. Wonderstone is helpful in eliminating worries, and reinforcing a state of tranquility. Dalmation Jasper is a calming stone for animals. Jasper is an amazing stone and there are many kinds. Come in and check out our variety. (Information on stones received from “Sheryl’s Guide to Stone En-ergies” by Sheryl Fisher and “Love is in the Earth” by Melody.) Here is a list of other beautiful Jaspers we have available at MBS: Biggs, Imperial, Leopardskin, Ocean, Rainforest, Red, Yel-low, Spaghetti, Spiderweb, Butterfly Wing, Mimbres Valley Picture, Larsonite, and a new, highly calming one called Moody Green. Now you ask, “Just what is the difference?” The vibrations are close but still a little different in each and they are all combinations of differ-ent and wonderful colors. People often ask how to pick out a stone for themselves or someone they care about. The very best way to pick out the “right” stone is to do it intuitively. The stone you need will draw you to it. Then you might want to read about the qualities and attributes of the stone that chose you and where it came from originally, etc. The beautiful thing about stones is that you can do no harm in choosing the “wrong” stone. There is always a reason why a stone goes home with you whether that reason is clear today, tomorrow, or never. So choose a stone that makes you smile, makes you go “Awwww”, feels good to the touch, or has no affect whatsoever but just needs to go home with you. This is the “right” way to welcome a new stone into your life.

Calico Balls- Sparkling colour combinations dance across the surface of our

handblown Calico Ball. Each ball has a tag identi-fying it as a friendship token, including a story

comparing the uniqueness of each friend. A Calico Ball is the perfect all occasion gift.

Just like friends-no two are alike!

Fairy Orbs– The Kitra’s Fairy Orb plays on folklore en-

couraging you to open your mind to the magic of another

reality. The irregular shape and fanciful splashes of colour are testament to the lamp’s hand-made character. The interior

threads add visual interest and a sense of cobwebs enhance the mystery. Hang this ornament in a sunny window to enhance the positive ambiance of your home as you imagine fairies

dancing among the colours. Open your mind to the magic of another

reality.

Olde English Witch Balls– Strands of glass within our Witch Ball make it fascinating to look at while reviving a custom that dates back to 18th century England. The story on the tag explains that the strands capture evil

spirits, making this ball a fun conversation piece. Hanging these decorative balls in the window is thought to tantalize evil spirits which may be threatening

a home’s tranquility.

Rainbow Connections

We are often asked why we have a rainbow on our billboards and also why we have a lot of rainbow things in our shop. We chose rainbow colors because of the human energy centers called Chakras which are of the same colors as the rainbow and the rainbow to us is everything we stand for, multicultural diversity and acceptance of all cultures, spirituality, and ways of life. What follows are some other reasons why one may choose to use a rainbow as a décor of any kind: There are things about the rainbow that are widely known such as the saying, “there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” and most of us at one time or another have sung or whistled “Somewhere over the Rainbow” but there is so much more to these won-derful colors, even though being a symbol of good fortune and reminding us there is no place like home should be enough. As a child I was told the story of Noah’s Ark and how at the end of those horrible 40 long days of rain God made a rainbow as a promise that there would never again be such a flood. What a wonderful story of how important and beautiful a prom-ise is. To this day I run out when I see it raining and the sun is peeking through the clouds because I know there is a chance that the sky is going to be lit up with fabulous color and I am reminded once again how my word to another is so very important. (Please read on for more compiled information on rainbows). From Spirit Rain’s rainbow information: “There exists in Buddhism the concept of a rainbow body. The ‘rainbow body’ is the ultimate transitional state of meditation in which matter begins to be transformed into pure light. It is said, the rainbow body signifies the awakening of the inner self to the complete reservoir of terrestrial knowledge that it is possible to access before stepping over the threshold to the state of Nirvana.” (For more on the Rainbow Body, read Richard Gerber’s “Vibrational Medicine”). Rainbows seem to be equated primarily with three concepts: promises, creation, and bridges. Promises made, kept, or desired. Creation of individuals and the universe. Bridges between us and somewhere else. Many myths, traditions, and beliefs use the Rainbow bridge to span heaven and earth; the physical world with the non-physical world. In the Golden Age the way between the heavens and earth was supposedly open to all. (A look at past astronomi-cal/astrological alignments might indicate the Age of Gemini being that time.) Since then, of course, man has lost the way to ascend to the sky realm. Enter the Rainbow as the symbol of that path, or a treaty between sky and earth. Even the proverbial "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow leads us to wishes, hopes, and promises. To Oriental sages, the Rainbow signified a union between male and female principles. In many cultures the rainbow is linked to sexuality, beginnings, and birth. Ganesha, the elephant headed god impregnated the Virgin Goddess Maya, who subsequently gave birth to Buddha. The white elephant god impregnated her by surrounding her with a magic rainbow as she walked near a river. According to one source I found, the Rainbow is a symbol of Goddess in general. In several cultures, the Rainbow has symbolized, or had connections with a Goddess of Creation. Among Australian Aborigines, she is called the Rainbow Serpent Mother. They say she "made the world and gave birth to its people." A similar Rainbow Goddess appears to be widely found throughout Africa. Her Yoruban name is Oya, and under that appellation, she is said to have first created the elements of the universe. She journeyed to the western hemisphere with the African slaves where she became the Rainbow Goddess: (Olla of Cuba & Puerto Rico, Yansa of Brazil, Maman Brigette or Damballah of Haitian voodoo.) The Polynesian Rainbow Serpent is also called the Celestial Serpent and "is of great importance in the myths. It is the Water Spirit who gave the people the first water. In Australia "The Rainbow Serpent is a creator, a sky hero, associated with the Dream Journey and Dream Time cere-monies. It varies in different parts of Australia, being either bi-sexual, masculine, or the Old Woman. Norse These myths also consider the Rainbow as a heavenly bridge called Bifrost. It was also known as Brisingamen, the jeweled necklace of Freya. Babylonian or Egyptian In Babylon the Rainbow was the necklace of Ishtar, although sometimes seen as her seven different-colored veils. The colored veils of the rainbow were also called the Seven Stoles of Isis. According to Tom Chetwynd, well-known artist, the Rainbow is a symbol of "Imagination itself “. So, does the rainbow symbolize our efforts to bridge and unite the left and right hemispheres of the brain? Or might it serve as a connection with our subconscious? Chakras and the colors associated with each of them: Red --- Base/Root, Orange --- Navel, Yellow --- Solar Plexus, Green --- Heart, Blue --- Throat, Indigo --- Third Eye, Violet --- Crown There is also a poem (author unknown) that is seen at many Veterinary Hospitals and Humane Societies called “The Rainbow Bridge” which tells of where a pet goes after they die and how they are reunited with their human companion on the bridge. The rainbow flag has become the easily-recognized colors of pride for the gay community, first used in 1978. The mul-ticultural symbolism of the rainbow is nothing new -- Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition also embraces the rainbow as a symbol of the political movement of acceptance of all race, religions, etc. The rainbow also plays a part in many myths and stories related to gender and sexuality issues in Greek, Native American, African, and other cultures. So, the rainbow has been with us since time began, it has been worshipped along with deities, and it has been held in awe because of it’s beauty. Again, the rainbow to us is everything we stand for, multicultural diversity and acceptance of all cultures and ways of life. It is beauty, and history, Gods and Goddesses, it is everyone, and everyone loves a rainbow.
