2004/05 brought a number of challenges and accomplishments to
Canuck Place Children Hospice, in addition to ushering in the
10th Anniversary of the opening of North America’s first free
standing children’s hospice, Canuck Place.
In an effort to improve efficiency, communication, and adherence
to a refined governance model, the previous two Boards [the
Foundation Board and the Hospice Board] were merged into one
unified body. The single board governance structure will now allow
the newly formed and smaller Foundation Board to focus on
overseeing the building of an endowment and long-term operating
funding, while working hand-in-hand with the Hospice, which will
continue to provide governance to the general hospice operations
and annual fund program.
Thanks to the generous support of numerous donors [individuals,
corporations, and foundations], the organization was able to
continue to respond to the needs of children and families, despite
the uncertain challenges brought on by the loss of an NHL season.
A renewed focus on the development and maintenance of alternate
strategies to access funding aided in moving us closer to our goal of
achieving financial stability. Strategies such as revamped branding
and marketing programs, grant applications, annual giving program
and special events were put in place and are already showing positive
returns.
As a priority to map out the future direction, the charity initiated a
review of its Strategic Plan during 2004/05. Families were asked to
participate in focus groups, interviews and surveys where their
input and suggestions were obtained and used to chart the new
direction of the hospice. Also as part of the strategic planning
process, staff, volunteers, donors and other stakeholder voices were
heard. As the process nears completion, a clear and focused vision
for the organization is emerging. The new strategic plan will not
only provide direction for the hospice for the next three to five
years, but it will also help to identify priorities and necessary
resources needed to accomplish the goals.
Our staff and volunteers are the cornerstone of Canuck Place and in
this past year they have not only provided stellar care to children and
families but also have made significant contributions to advancing the
body of knowledge and skills in the field of pediatric palliative care.
With the security of being financially stable and a clear direction for
the future, the board, staff and volunteers will continue to serve with
unwavering commitment, British Columbia’s children with life-
threatening illnesses and their families. Canuck Place is positioned to
achieve and celebrate many more milestones in the years to come.
At the core of our achievements over this past year are all the
courageous children and their families who teach us every day
that anything can be accomplished with great love and
determination.
Wayne Duzita, Hospice Board Chair
Filomena Nalewajek, Executive Director
Canuck Place is a story of courage and vision, and a shining example of the good that comes from individuals and organizations
seeing a need in their community and working together to fill it. In this case, there was a need to provide another care
option for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families – an option that would give families the
added flexibility to access hospice care when hospital or home care could no longer meet their needs.
Message from Wayne Duzita, HospiceBoard Chair & Filomena Nalewajek,Executive Director
