EARLY HISTORYSouth Dakota State University, the state's

land grant institution, was authorized in 1881by the Territorial Legislative Assembly.Territorial council member John O'BrienScobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary forBrookings, managed to secure DakotaAgricultural College for his city.

Although allocations fell short of theactual cost, the school was able to open in thefall of 1884 because the president, GeorgeLilley, was willing to advance $500 (one thirdof his salary) to finish three rooms in the newCentral building. "Old Central" was soonjoined by South (1885) and North (1887),forming the nucleus of campus activities for adecade and a half.

During the first year of operation, onlypreparatory classes were held. College classesstarted in 1885 with 5 teachers and 17freshman and 61 preparatory students. Growthwas slow and erratic for many years, but by theturn of the century there were 242 students. By1990 SDSU had an enrollment of over 9,000students with nearly 8,100 at the Brookingscampus. It has granted over 46,500 degreessince the college was chartered in 1881.

The structure of the college became morecomplex as enrollments increased. The firstnine chairs of instruction established in 1884included agriculture, science, mathematics,English, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, politicaland domestic economy, and music.

By 1907, the year the name of theinstitution was changed to South Dakota StateCollege of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22 departments on campus.Reorganization into the five divisions whichformed the basis for the designation of

colleges was completed under PresidentCharles W. Pugsley in 1923.

In 1964, when "State College" wasrenamed South Dakota State University, therewere six colleges - Arts and Science,Agricultural and Biological Sciences, HomeEconomics, Engineering, Nursing, andPharmacy and a Graduate Division. A seventh,General Registration, was added later. In 1975the Division of Education was created, whichbecame the College of Education andCounseling in 1991.

Today, degrees are offered through theseeight colleges:

Agricultural and Biological Sciences Arts and Science Education and Counseling, Engineering Family and Consumer Sciences General Registration Nursing Pharmacy Graduate School South Dakota State University is

accredited by the North Central Association ofColleges and Secondary Schools.

JACKS RETURN VETERAN TEAM

1996-97-98-02 NCC CHAMPIONS PAGE – 5

For the third straight season, SouthDakota State returns a veteran team.

Last year, the Jacks returned all fivestarters from a 22-7 team.

This year, there are four starters from lastyear’s 24-6.

Sooner or later, those people have tobecome seniors. That’s this year.

SDSU enters the season with six seniors. And the Jacks not only return quantity, butquality.

Austin Hansen, 6-1, 185, has started all

but one game over the past three seasons.Already a two-time all-conference selection,he enters his senior year 14th on the SDSUall-time scoring list.

Derrick Schantz, 6-6, 195, like Hansen, has played in 88 games. He’s started 59. Hewas an honorable mention all-NCC selectionlast year and was named to the North CentralRegional all-tournament team.

Chris Stoebner 6-3, 205, is the teamhandiman. He has been in and out of thestarting lineup, but has appeared in 81 games

with 21 starts.Josh Cerveny, 6-8, 285, was a first-team

all-conference selection in 2001, had aninjury riddled season and started just fivegames. Nonetheless, he earned a spot on theall-tourney team at the regional. He hasplayed in 71 games with 30 starts andaveraged 14.4 points with 6.8 rebounds pergame two years ago.

Adam Robinson, 6-10, 215, has been aback-up post player at SDSU sincetransferring from Northwestern (Big Ten) twoyears ago.He has played in 53 games withthree starts.

And then there’s Sonny Walker, 6-3, 200,who attended Division I Chicago State out ofhigh school. He enrolled at SDSU last year, but was injured in the pre-season and did notplay. He’ll have one year of eligibilityremaining.

Not all of the quality is among theseniors.

Matt Jones, 6-6, 210, was the NCCfreshman of the year last season when heaveraged 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds pergame while finishing fith in Division II in fieldgoal shooting. He was also a first team all-conference selection and was also voted tothe Wells Fargo Finals all-tourney team.

Andy Moeller, 6-1, 185, who started all30 games last year at guard, was anhonorable mention all-conference selectionfor the regular season, then joined AustinHansen on the Wells Fargo Finals all-tourneyteam.

That accounts for seven lettermen. Thereare four more - junior forward Jared Gass, 6-5, 200, sophomore guard Luke Geiver, 6-2,190, sophomore guard Brady Hokenson, 6-0,165, and sophomore post Jared DeJong. At6-11, DeJong is the tallest of the Jackrabbits.

And with ten lettermen including fourstarters returning, the Jacks still expectimmediate help from junior college transferMarquise Richardson, a point guard. FromDecatur, IL, he earned all-region honors atPark Land CC.

There’s another transfer on the roster, 6-7-, 240 Calvin Melaney, a military veteranwho graduated from high school in 1994,making him the oldest member of the team.

And the Jacks have one redshirtfreshman, 6-8 John Orsillo.

There are two freshmen on the roster, all-starter Andy Kleinjan, a 6-3 guard, fromSioux Valley High School, and 6-5guard/forward Blake Erwin, from Dixon, NE.

After Scott Nagy’s first year as head coachat South Dakota State University, it was easy toask, “What can he do for an encore?”

After all, he inherited a 17-10 team whichwas picked sixth in the North CentralConference pre-season poll and marched to anoutright league championship.

In his first season as head coach at anylevel, Nagy was not only named NCC Coach ofthe Year, but picked as Division II Coach of theyear by Basketball Times.

Now, after seven seasons, expectationshave changed.

SDSU is 159-45 during Nagy’s seasonsand no longer an underdog.

The Jacks won four NCC titles, 1996-97-98 and 2002, and have been second in theleague twice. They have qualified for the NCAADivision II playoffs six times including fourappearances in the NCAA Division II NorthCentral Regional championship game, advancing to the Elite Eight in 1997.

Nagy has been NCC Coach of the Yearfour times, including last year.

And Nagy’s style of play brought out thefans – SDSU has led the nation (Division II) inattendance each of the first three seasonsbefore finishing second in 1999, thenregaining the top spot in 2000 and 2002.

Adam Thaler, in the Sioux Falls ArgusLeader, wrote: “If only coaching were as easyas Scott Nagy makes it seem.”

The team wasn’t completely foreign to theleague’s youngest coach when he took over. Hehad recruited a number of the players duringhis stay as an assistant coach before he movedto Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

Still, when he said “We can win theconference,” some wondered. They are nowbelievers.

“I like this level,” Nagy said. “I played atthis level. It’s a level I know well. It’s a chancefor the athlete to play good basketball.”

Nagy says, “There are two greatmotivators, love and fear. The most importantthing I can do is let the players know I careabout them.”

Nagy is from Champaign, Ill., where hisfather, Dick, was a long-time assistant coach atthe University of Illinois. Nagy attended DeltaState and was a four-year starter at pointguard. He played on a team that defeated NCCchampion St. Cloud State in the NCAA

Division II quarterfinals in 1987.Nagy was named Gulf South Conference

“Athlete of the Year” in 1988 and is still theDelta State all-time leader in assists. For hisefforts, Nagy has been named to the DeltaState Hall of Fame.

Academically, Nagy was a GTE-CoSidaAcademic All-American and was named to theGulf South academic all-conference team threestraight years.

Although just 29 when he became headcoach at SDSU, Nagy had not only grown upin a basketball setting, but had seven seasonsexperience as an assistant coach. He was agraduate assistant for two seasons undercoach Lou Henson, helping guide the FightingIllini to two trips to the NCAA tournament. Hewas with the Illinois team which qualified forthe Final Four in 1989. Nagy was an assistantat SDSU under head coach Jim Thorson from1990-93. During that tenture, the Jacksclaimed the NCC title in 1992 and the NCCpost-season tournament crown in 1991,playing in the NCAA tournament each year.

For two seasons before becoming headcoach at SDSU, Nagy was assistant coach atSIU-E.

Nagy and his wife, Jamie, have threesons, Nick (7) and Tyler (6) and Anthony (2year) and one daughter, Natalie (1).

The last time a North Central Conference basketball team won theNCAA Division II championship game, Sid Bostic ended it with a 40-foot shot at the buzzer.

That gave South Dakota State a 44-42 victory over Eldon Miller'sWittenburg Tigers in the 1963 title showdown.

Twenty-one consecutive tournaments passed without one NCCteam in the title game ... until March of 1985. Then, guess whoreturned – the Yellow and Blue.

In a storybook year for the Jackrabbits, there was no storybookending to that one. Jacksonville State rallied from a 71-64 deficit with2:14 to play to defeat SDSU 74-73 in an exciting championship gameat the Division II Final Four in Springfield, Mass.

Losing in the finals of the national tournament didn't alter what the1985 Jackrabbit team accomplished. Rather, it just added anotherchapter to the tradition-rich history of SDSU basketball. The word "winning" and "basketball" have become synonymous atSDSU.

In 1992, the Jackrabbits went back to Springfield for the Elite Eightafter winning their seventh regional championship.

In 1993, the Jacks added another milestone, becoming just theeighth team in NCAA Division II history to win 1,000 or more games.SDSU achieved its 1,000th victory by defeating Nebraska-Omaha 69-67at Omaha.

In 1997, the Jacks claimed their eighth regional championship andadvanced to the Elite Eight, this time in Louisville, KY.

SDSU leads in North Central Conference championships, 20.SDSU has more NCAA post-season tournament appearances, 22,

than any other NCC team.Only three teams in the country have been in the NCAA playoffs

more often than SDSU.SDSU won more NCC holiday tournament titles than any other

team, five. SDSU's holiday tournament championships were in 1968,1969, 1973, 1977 and 1979. In addition, SDSU won the NCCtournament played in Sioux City in 1950.

SDSU has also had more individuals win the league's MostValuable Player Award, twelve, than any other league member. JasonSempsrott captured the honor in 1997 .

In 1979-80, SDSU became the first, and only, team to win the NCC"Triple Crown", claiming championships in the holiday tournament, regular season and post-season tournament. SDSU hosted, and won,the NCAA Division II North Central regional that year, advancing to thequarter-finals of the national tournament.

In 1985, SDSU not only hosted and won the North Centralregional, but became the first team in South Dakota to host an NCAAquarterfinal-round game.On March 16, 1985, a Frost Arena and NCAADivision II playoff record 9,339 fans watched the Jacks defeat CaliforniaState-Hayward 62-58, giving SDSU a berth in the NCAA Final Four.

SDSU has won regional crowns in 1959, 1961, 1963, 1970,1980,1985, 1992 and 1997, and has also participated in nationalplayoffs (which started in 1957) in 1960, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1973,1978, 1984, 1988, 1991, 1996 and 1998.

SDSU is one of two North Central Conference teams which canboast of winning a national championship. The 1963 team, coached by

Jim Iverson and featuring All-America center Tom Black, went 22-5 forthe season, and won the title on the dramatic shot by Bostic.

SDSU has had three players earn the Outstanding Player award atthe national finals – Don Jacobsen, when State finished third in 1961;Wayne Rasmussen, in 1963; and Mark Tetzlaff, in 1985. And, typicalof South Dakota State's tradition of winning with small town home-grown talent, Jacobsen was from Lake Norden, Rasmussen fromHoward and Tetzlaff from Hayti.

Eight Jackrabbit players of recent history have had tryouts with proteams in this country.

In 1980, Steve Lingenfelter was the 44th player picked in the NBAdraft, selected by the Washington Bullets. In 1980-81, he passed upthe opportunity to play in the NBA, choosing instead to spend a seasonin Italy. But he made the Bullet roster at the start of the 1983 season. In 1984, he played in the Continental League, and had a ten-daycontract with the San Antonio Spurs.

Black played with the Phillips 66 Oilers of the old AAU league, thenspent the 1970-71 season with Seattle and Cincinnati of the NBA.

South Dakota State University plays its home games inFrost Arena, named after former SDSU coach and athleticdirector R.B. "Jack" Frost.

The facility, which is part of the Stanley J. Marshall HPERCenter, now seats 9,000 fans for basketball. The SDSU-Augustana game on February 11, 1989, attracted an arena record9,456 fans, a record which may never be broken since the newchair-back courtside seating, added before the 1992-93 season, eliminated nearly 500 seats from the arena total.

The improved seating is just the one in a series of changeswhich have included adding scoreboards at each end of thefloor to complement the main scoreboard hanging over mid-court, incorporating a colorful scorer's bench at courtside, repainting the floor, and adding an $80,000 sound system to thearena.

Bids totaling $3,374,115 were let for the facility following legislative approval of the project with the bill signed by Governor Frank Farrar February14, 1970. Ground was broken Sept. 22, 1970. The cornerstone was placed by Governor Richard Kneip Oct. 2, 1971. Final cost of the building was$3,685,000, with the difference made up by gifts and items donated later.

The first game played at the Arena was on February 2, 1973. In 1994, the one-millionth fan passed through the Frost Arena turnstiles.Reuben B. (Jack) Frost was born in Sheyenne, North Dakota, April 26, 1907, and graduated from Spring Grove, Minn.,

High School in 1923. He attend Luther College (Iowa) from 1924 to 1928, and received his PhD in Physical Education from theUniversity of Oregon in 1958.

He was named Athletic Director, and professor and head of the Department of Physical Education in June 1947, andserved until assuming a distinguished professorship at Springfield (Mass.) College in 1960. At Springfield, he occupied the onlyendowed chair for physical education in the nation.

His coaching career began in 1928 at Glenwood, Minn., High School and later at Fergus Falls, Minn. In 1935, he becameathletic director and coach at Bemidji State College.

In 1951, Dr. Frost established the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Graduate program here.He was an international leader in recreation, health and physical education. Among other international assignments, he

was this nation's representative at the Fifth Session of the International Olympic Academy at Greece in 1965.An author, teacher, coach and administrator, Dr. Frost's influence on this university remains today. He was mentor to Dr. Stanley Marshall, in whose

Page 36: 2003 - South Dakota State University

South Dakota State University is a chartermember of the North Central IntercollegiateConference, better known as the North CentralConference or NCC.

The league was formed in the fall of 1921when representatives of colleges anduniversities from South Dakota, North Dakota,Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska met in Chicago toconsider the formation of a conference. The firstofficial competition had teams from South DakotaState, University of South Dakota, North DakotaState, University of North Dakota, NebraskaWesleyan, Morningside, Creighton University,College of St. Thomas and Des MoinesUniversity.

Early competition involved just three sports:football, basketball and track. The NCC nowdetermines championships in ten sports for menand ten for women. Men's championships aredetermined in football, cross country and golf inthe fall; basketball, wrestling, swimming andindoor track in the winter; plus baseball, tennisand outdoor track in the spring.

The league has been a model for otherNCAA Division II conferences around the nation, not only competitively but also from anadministrative standpoint.

Athletically, the conference annuallyproduces national champions, both as teams andindividually.

The league has had numerous changes inmembership over the years, and more changeshave come about in the past year.

First, charter member Morningsidewithdrew, joining the NAIA Great Plains AthleticConference, effective with the current school year(2002-03).

`Then Northern Colorado notified the leagueit would leaving to pursue membership in NCAADivision I. That makes this UNC’s final season ofNCC competition.

North Dakota State has also notified theleague it will be leaving to pursue Division Istatus after the 2003-04 season.

And South Dakota State is also studying amove to Division I, but has not at this pointnotified the conference of its intentions.

To compensate for the loss of UNC andMorningside, the league has admittedMinnesota-Duluth, effective with the 2003-04season.

During the spring and summer of 1981,Mankato State, a league member from 1968through 1977, was re-admitted at the spring

meeting. Then at thesummer meeting, St.Cloud State's applicationfor admission wasapproved. The Universityof Northern Colorado atGreeley was added to theleague in 1979. UNCcompetes in the NCC inall sports except baseball, where the Bears havemaintained a Division Iprogram.

Also in the league is Augustana College ofSouth Dakota, admitted in 1941; and theUniversity of Nebraska-Omaha, added in 1976.UNO was actually in the league from 1935-43when it was OmahaUniversity --before theuniversity became part ofthe Nebraska state system.

Des Moines Universitywas the first of the chartermembers to leave theleague, withdrawing in1926. That university laterceased operations.

Nebraska Wesleyanwithdrew following the 1927 football season. St.Thomas and Creighton severed ties in 1928.

The University of Northern Iowa joined theleague in 1936 and withdrew in 1978.

Michael J. Marcil was named the sixth NCCcommissioner in October, 1997, succeeding Noel

Olson, who retired. Olson is now the NCC’sSupervisor of Officials. Melanie Heitman-Nelsonjoined the conference office as assistantcommissioner in the spring of 1992, and Jon J.Martin was named NCC Director of MediaRelations in July 1998.

Olson served as commissioner from 1984until October, 1997. Previous comcommissionerswere Jack McClelland (1968-70), Dr. RichardKoppenhaver (1970-77), R.D. "Dewey" Halford(1977-84) and Noel Olson (1984-97).
