HARDROCKER FOOTBALLProfile,

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, founded in 1885, has been a national leader in preparing world-class engineers and scientists. Our graduates design, construct, and operate modern technology to meet complex chal-lenges such as global warming, health care delivery, energy resource development, mineral extraction and processing, environment quality, futuristic transportation, and national defense. Our alumni are held in the highest regard by their fel-low leaders in industry, consulting, government, health and education.

Tech had diversified to meet the needs of the engineering and science throughout the world. SOuth Dakota Tech'sintellectual environment was shaped a century ago by the ingenuity and rugged individualism of pioneers in sci-ence and technology. Tech's present day pioneers provide inspiration and remain on the cutting edge in the fields of

engineering and the sciences.

ACCREDITATIONThe South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges andSecondary Schools, the recognized accrediting agency for the north central states. In addition, the curriculum inChemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology(ABET), which is the recognized accrediting agency for engineering, has also accredited all the undergraduate curriculafor all SDSM&T engineering programs with the exception of Environmental Engineering which is a new program. Theprogram in Computer Science is accredited by the Computer Science Commission (CSAC) of the Computer SciencesAccreditation Board (CSAB), a special accreditation body recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation(COPA) and the U.S. Department of Education.

ACADEMIC ORGANIZATIONAcademic organization of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology centers around four colleges and thir-teen departments. Colleges are organized to promote interdisciplinary interaction between the sciences and engineeringand to provide leadership for strong undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Facuity of the colleges work closely together to support and develop:quality undergraduate educational opportunities;focused quality graduate education; research and other scholarly activities in support ofeducational opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels;service programs for the people of the state of South Dakota, the region and the nation.

Academic departments at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology are organized in colleges as follows:College of Earth Systems College of Materials Sciences and EngineeringAtmosphere Sciences Chemistry and Chemical EngineeringCivil and Environmental Engineering Materials and Metallurgical EngineeringGeology and Geological Engineering Physics

South, Dakota, Tech/ WetcoMtes Dr. Charles ftjucJk/

T'he South Dakota School of Mines and Technology welcomed Dr. Charles Ruchto campus as the university's 17tn president. He comes to South Dakota Techafter serving as president of Boise State University in Boise, Idaho.

"I'm glad to be here," Ruch said. "I'm excited to work with everyone on campus totake this wonderful university to a new level of excellence. I also look forward toworking with my colleagues at other universities to find ways to enhance the educa-tional opportunities available to students, and with community organizations andagencies that want to join with us to make Rapid City and the Black Hills even betterplaces to live."

Dr. Charles Ruck*President ofSt>SM& T

Ruch succeeds Dr. Richard Gowen, who left campus June 30, 2003 after 16 years as Tech's president. SouthDakota Gov. Mike Rounds appointed Gowen director of the Homestake Laboratory Conversion Project.

Ruch had been president of Boise State University for 10 years. Under his leadership, the school grewinto Idaho's largest university, serving 17,000 students in a rapidly growing metropolitan area. The uni-rversity's research and development budget grew to $20 million during Ruch's tenure.

Among many other issues, Ruch will direct his attention toward economic development. "I was very interestedin the work under way here in South Dakota to link higher education and economic development," he said."Public higher education has much to offer by way of its research capacity and faculty expertise to SouthDakota's economic development resources."

Ruch will also focus on new ways to collaborate with Tech's sister institution at Black Hills State University."South Dakota Tech and Black Hills State have complementary missions," Regents President Harvey C.Jewett said. "We are anxious to put Dr. Ruch's leadership, in concert with Black Hills State President TomFlickema, to work in this area."

Ruch has doctorate and master's degrees in education from Northwestern University, and a bachelor'sdegree in chemistry from The College of Wooster in Ohio. Prior to his time at Boise State, Ruch served11 years at Virginia Commonwealth University — first as an associate dean and dean, and for the

remaining six years as provost and vice president for academic affairs. His first university assignments cameat the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair.

An active participant in regional and national higher education organizations, Ruch has chaired the Urban andMetropolitan Universities Committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He hasalso served on the presidents' councils of the Big Sky, Big West, and Western Athletic conferences and cur-rently serves as chair of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.

He was actively involved in the Boise community, where he has chaired the United Way board and the FutureFoundation of Boise and has served on the chamber of commerce board. He and his wife, Sally, have fourgrown children.
