History of the World Cup

The FIFA World Cup started in the year 1930. Every 4 years they hold the matches. The only time they haven’t had a World Cup was 1942 and 1946, because of World War II.8

The FIFA world competition I chose to research is the FIFA 2002 World Cup. It was held on the 31st of May 2002 to the 30th of June 2002. It was held in South Korea and

Japan. 1

This was the first World Cup, and still the only World Cup, to be hosted by two different

countries.2

Ronaldo scored the 2 goals.

Ronaldo’s full name is Ronaldo Lu`is Naz`ario de Lima. He was born on the 18th of September 1976. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ronaldo is one of footballs most famous players. He has played in many different teams, like14:

1993: Cruzeio1994-1996: PSV Eindhoven1996-1997: Barcelona 14

And so on. He has also participated in severalWorld Cup competitions, including:14

1998 World Cup2002 World Cup2006 World Cup 14

In the scoring sequence, Ronaldo scored both goals in the tournament to make his team win the World Cup.9

The goal that took my attention is the wining goal for the Brazilian team. That happened

when Rivaldo took the ball from a square ball pass that Kl`eberson did and then gave it to Ronaldo. Ronaldo then took the ball to the

edge of the box and scored a goal from there.9

12

A square ball pass is a parallel pass through the

middle of the field. The pass

goes to the player on the

other side. 15

The defending team could have marked players on the other team, that way it would be harder for the attacking team to shoot a goal.

13

Marking players is when players on the other team try to stop the player that they have

been assigned and take the ball away from them during the whole game.

Brazil’s winning strategy was when the 2 players were attacking, on the right or left wing, some of the other good players were behind them in case they could not pass the other teams defense. That way they had to backup and then turn around and pass it to the player behind them. That would then keep the other team from trying to get the ball from the wrong person.

There were no “off the ball” movements in the game to help get the goal.

Off the Ball means when a player on a team does actions when

he does not have the ball and his actions help the person with

the ball.
