Youth Computer Training Program– Coordinators

Jongy Howard Calvert – Administrative Coordinator Zack Garbow – Technical Director 5 Instructors and a host of classroom helpers (IBM & MAYO)

– Scope of Activities1. Rochester Independent School District-535 Accredited Computer Science

Classroom Sessions (Academic Credit)– One semester (December thru May)– One 3 hour session per Saturday at Century HS – Equivalent to 3 ISD-535 Class Period sessions– 49 Students Registered for 2008/2009– Average attendance to date is 41 students per Saturday session– ISD-535 would have to pay about $19,100 to sponsor a course of this magnitude – Randy Nelson, ISD 535 - Director of Curriculum and Instruction, estimates that

a one class period, one semester, accredited course taught by ISD-535 costs about $6,700 per semester

Youth Computer Training Program Demographics based on 49 Registered Students By Grade

– 30.6% are in Middle School - 7th and 8th – 69.4% are in High School – 9th through 12th graders

By Gender – 36.7% are Female– 63.3% are Male

Nationality – 63.3% are Somali – 36.7% are a mixture of (African American, Asian-Indian,

Caucasian, Pakistani and Ghanaian) School District

– 89.8% are enrolled in Rochester ISD-535– 10.2% are enrolled in Rochester but Outside the District

Youth Computer Training Program1. 2008 - National High School Computer Competition &

Youth Technology Camp• 18 Students attended Technology conference in Atlanta, GA • 5 students participated in the National High School Computer

Competition (HSCC)• 13 Students participated in the Youth Technology Camp (YTC)

2. National High School Computer Competition Winners– BDPA Southern MN Team Won 1st Place

• Completed the programming competition in record time • Earned a perfect score in the programming component for 2nd

year in a row

Youth Computer Training Program

5. Prototype Mobile Computer Lab at Century(Laptops/Printers Donated by IBM)

• BDPA, Southern MN has established a process for utilizing laptops and classrooms as Computer Labs versus desktops and static computer labs.

• Working in partnership with IBM, ISD 535 and Century, our Youth Computer Training can now be held anywhere within Century. We sometimes use the classroom adjacent to the Computer Lab when overflow conditions exist.
