    Cooling Fans - 170 Chassis

    MODEL IDENTIFICATION

    MODEL IDENTIFICATION

    DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Vehicles are equipped with a cooling fan module mounted to the radiator. Cooling fan assembly includes anelectric motor and one-piece fan shroud. The cooling fan assembly is attached to radiator by screws andretaining clips. Cooling fan operation is controlled by an input signal from Powertrain Control Module (PCM).PCM enables cooling fan through the engine/climate control fan module via DATA-bus communication system. In addition, A/C control module can request that PCM activate cooling fan control circuit, when A/C high sidepressure reaches a specified level.

    TROUBLE SHOOTING

    PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

Verify customer complaint by operating system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electricaldamage. Check generator belt tension and condition. Ensure that battery voltage is within specifications. Inspectfor blown fuses and damaged relays. For fuse and/or relay identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS.

Verify ground connection integrity between engine, body, battery and generator. Check for damaged wiring

harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could causesystem malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure anyaftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found, check for conditions that might cause an intermittent situation.

    ELECTRIC RADIATOR FAN

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Beforeattempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel orrelated components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS (or AIR BAG SAFETY

PRECAUTIONS) and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM inappropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

NOTE: When the battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory system maylose data. Driveability problems may exist unt il computer systems havecompleted a relearn cycle.

Disconnect harness plug connector from cooling fan. Spin fan blade by hand several times and check for

imbalance or grinding noises, if imbalance or grinding noise is found, replace cooling fan motor. SeeELECTRIC COOLING FAN ASSEMBLYunder REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

ELECTRIC RADIATOR FAN DOES NOT RUN

Some possible causes of radiator fan not running include, faulty fan motor, fan relay, PCM, engine coolanttemperature sensor, A/C pressure transducer, fuse or wiring faults.

    SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

    BATTERY DISCONNECT/CONNECT

    Disconnect/Connect Procedures

    1. Turn off ignition. Open engine hood. After opening vehicle wait at least 4 minutes before disconnectingbattery or alarm will be triggered.

    2. Connect quiescent current retention unit, if necessary.

    3. Disconnect negative battery cable (1) and insulate cable lug to prevent unwanted contact with groundpoint (W16/4). See Fig. 1.

    4. To connect, reverse disconnect procedure. If quiescent current retention unit was not used, perform basicprogramming. See BASIC PROGRAMMING. After repairs, read DTC memory and erase trouble

codes from memory. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODESunder SELF-DIAGNOSTICS.

NOTE: Numbers and letters in text refer to numbers and letters in f igures.

    BASIC PROGRAMMING

    1. Set time on instrument cluster. Pull out knob at lower right of speedometer. To adjust hour, turn to right.

To adjust minute, turn to left.2. If necessary, set time at stationary heater timer.

    3. Start engine and run at idle. Turn steering wheel from one lock position to the other to activate steeringangle sensor. Center steering wheel. Malfunction indicator lamp should go out.

    4. Code radio. See CODING RADIO.

    Coding Radio

    1. Turn ignition on. CODE will appear on radio display. Enter first code number with station button. Forexample, station button 1 is number 1.

    2. After entering first number, CODE will disappear and first number entered will appear followed by 4dashes. The next character to be entered flashes.

    3. After entering all 5 numbers the first character starts flashing again. If an input error has occurred it can

be corrected at this time by reentering the complete correct code.

    4. Press TUNE, AUTO/SEEK or SC button. If code is correct, radio automatically switches on and indicatesthe station or frequency stored with station button 1. If an incorrect code number has been entered, CODEappears again on display. If an incorrect code is entered 3 times, WAIT appears on display and radiolocks up for approximately 10 minutes. If an incorrect code is entered 3 times again, radio locks up forapproximately 10 additional minutes. After 9 incorrect attempts, lock time increases to 60 minutes.Another 3 incorrect entries locks up radio for another 60 minutes. Radio must remain switched on duringlock up time.

    SELF-DIAGNOSTICS

SLK models are equipped with a Cooling Fan With Integrated Control Unit. Cooling fan control module isintegral to cooling fan motor and mounted to radiator fan shroud. Fan control module is OBD II capable, andwill set a DTC in memory if a fault is detected. Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) faults are alsomonitored by the ECM and will set a DTC.

To check for and erase stored DTCs with scan tool. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

and CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES. After repairs are completed check for and erase anyDTCs stored in (ME-SFI) system. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINEPERFORMANCE. For more information on the self-diagnostic system, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICSarticle in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

    RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

For retrieving diagnostic trouble codes, see Fig. 2 .
