Mars, the “Red Planet”, is visible to the naked eye. Known even by the Egyptian astronomers since 1534 B.C., it has always called us from among the stars, awakening our desire to visit.In fact, when the telescope became available, the first step towards the knowledge of Mars was made in 1672 by Giovanni Domenico Cassini, an Italian/French mathematician, astronomer, astrologer and engineer, who succeeded in measuring the diurnal parallax of Mars, to determine the Sun-Earth dis-tance. His observations and astronomical discoveries were so remarkable that recently his name has been given to the asteroid “(24101) Cassini”, to Lunar and Martian craters, and to the Cassini–Huygens probe.Mars thus started to be considered as a “terrestri-al planet” with valleys, deserts and polar ice caps wrapped inside a thin atmosphere, and a rotational period with seasonal cycles similar to Earth.The second step towards discovering more about the Red Planet was made in Milan, on 6th February 1760, by two Jesuits who were teaching to the clergy and nobles classical and scientific studies at the Brera University. Despite being professors of philosophy, they were astronomy fans and discovered a comet with their naked eye, following its passage with their telescope. At this news, the Milanese were really excited and convinced the University to build a proper astronom-ic observatory, calling on Milan Giuseppe Lodovico Lagrangia, a famous Jesuit astronomer at that time working in Marseilles.The “Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera” was then built in 1764 in collaboration with a further fourth Jesuit, Ruggero Boscovich (born in Croatian - Ruđer Josip Bošković), a typical eighteenth-century figure of cosmopolitan intellect who was a physicist, astrono-mer, mathematician, philosopher, diplomat, poet and theologian.His father, a Ragusan merchant, died when he was a child so his Italian mother sent him in Italy. Here he studied, lived and worked for most of his life, exclud-ing a period of 10 years in France, and some works carried out in various capitals, including Warsaw, London, Vienna and Constantinople. To build the Observatory, he modified the Brera Pal-ace adding a tower with a terraced roof with four small conical domes to accommodate observational instruments. The considerable cost was funded by the University, by the scientific patronage of volunteers, including several Jesuits, and partly by Boscovich himself.Following the suppression of the Jesuit order (see our Hello Milano issue on May 2017, http://www.

hellomilano.it/hm/visit-brera-strolling-through-the-centuries/), Brera Palace passed to the rulers of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty who continued to sustain the Observatory.After the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, on 17 March 1861, the Astronomical Observatory of Brera was given new life under the great work held by Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli. He studied at the University of Turin, and later at Berlin Observatory, under Johann Franz Encke. He then worked in the Pulkovo Observatory near St. Petersburg, and finally arrived in Milan in 1882, where for over forty years, he was the director of the Brera Observatory. Here in Milan he had at his disposal a quite good Merz telescope produced in Germany, but Schiapa-relli strongly requested the purchase of one of the largest and most powerful telescope in Europe, the Merz-Repsold.The huge investment of 250,000 lire (more than 1 million € today) was approved despite the country’s economic difficulties due to the recent reunification, but made the Milan Observatory one of the most ad-vanced in the world to deepen Mars studies.Constructed by Merz (the optical part) and Repsold (the structure), had an objective lens of 49 centime-ters in diameter (no longer present), a focal length of 7 meters, a support column of about 5 meters high, and a total weight of around 7 tons.This instrument granted a precise and detailed ob-servation of the sky, marking a turning point in the study of planets. It allowed Schiaparelli to design several Mars maps showing the presence of “chan-nels”, which gave rise to a heated debate among scientists on the existence of water, vegetation and even intelligent life on the planet. While Schiaparelli remained cautious in hypothesiz-ing what could have been Mars nature, other astron-omers engaged in debates which went far beyond the scientific sphere to invade sociology and cos-tume, indissolubly linked to the myth of the Martians and the new lucky science fiction!Only many years later, scientists realized that the de-tails of the Mars surface were the result of an optical illusion. Schiaparelli was in fact a victim of a well-known perceptual phenomenon according to which the human brain tends to give a geometric structure to details grabbed by the eye in a vague and indis-tinct way.

Schiapparelli died in 1910, in 1936, the telescope was transferred to the new and more modern Observatory in Merate, and then sadly dismantled in the early 1960s. But on the occasion of the centenary of Schiapa-relli’s death, the Astronomical Observatory of Brera launched a project for its restoration, made possible by a funding approved by the Chamber of Deputies, and further supported by contributions from other public and private sources.Its complex restoration was worked out by the volun-taries of the Association for the Restoration of the An-cient Scientific Instruments Onlus. After an research, they have reproduced the missing parts in agreement with the Metropolitan City of Milan’s Superintendence of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape.Born to a new life, the telescope is now part of the highlights kept inside the Space and Astronomy sec-tor of the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tec-nologia in Milan, in addition to the important collec-tion present at the Museum since 1961 when, follow-ing the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Schi-aparelli’s death, some of the most valuable historical Brera instruments were donated to the Museum.Let us end this article recalling the NASA Mariner Program conducted from 1962 to 1973 to investigate Mars, Venus and Mercury. It was the starting point for many subsequent NASA/JPL, such as the Voyager, or the Viking, Mariner-based spacecraft included the Magellan probe, the Galileo probe, and the Cassini–Huygens probe.After so many centuries, now we are quite sure that Mars is really different from Earth, non-existent Mar-

Lago MaggioreIt is the second largest lake in It-aly, extended for about 65 kilome-tres (40 miles). The climate is mild both in sum-mer and winter, producing Medi-terranean vege-tation, with many gardens growing

rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Borromean and Brissago Islands, the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. “A Friend in Milan” will take you there by car or by train. If you want to do it yourself, take a train from the Stazi-one Stazione Centrale or Stazione Porta Garibaldi to Stresa www.lenord.it. • Driving, parkingWhenever you leave your car unattended, make sure that there are no bags, cameras, wallets etc. in sight inside. To enter the city centre (the area within the socalled “Cerchia dei Bastioni”, a circular area which, to give you an idea, starts from Porta Venezia on one side, Piazza XXIV Maggio on the other), you have to pay a tariff in the Area C system, about €5 per entrance. The Area C system operates Mon-Fri, 7.30-19.30. For further information, click on the Area C banner on the website www.comune.milano.it. Petrol stations in the city close for lunch, Saturday after-noons and Sunday. There are a few self-service pumps in the city. Motorway service stations are open 24 hrs a day. To park in the streetside areas marked by blue lines, you need to buy a SostaMilano card, on sale at the “ATM Point” in the Duomo metro station (open Mon-Sat 7.45-20.15), and in Cadorna, Centrale F.S., Loreto and Romolo metro stations, as well as in many bars and tobacconists. The cards are also sold directly by the attendants near the parking areas (they have uniforms and ID cards). You mark the start of stay on the card by scratching the year, month, day, and time. Various privately-run carparks also exist (blue P sign). If you are driving into Milan, you can use the multistorey car parks at the Metro stations Cascina Gobba, Famagosta, Bisceglie, Molino Dorino and Lampugnano, open 6.00-01.00, the cheapest parking in the city. Don’t leave your car in areas marked by the tow-away symbol, or in areas marked by yellow lines (areas reserved for residents). If your car should be clamped or towed away, you will have to contact the Polizia Locale (traffic wardens), whose offices are in Piazza Beccaria 19 (MM1/3 Duomo), tel. 02.02.08. Keep dipped headlights on during the daytime.

• Personal identityIt is a good idea to have your passport or ID card with you at all times, as you may be asked for it in the most surpris-ing of situations (using a library, Internet café, etc.)

• PostagePost offices are marked with a yellow “PT” sign. The central post office for letters, parcels etc. is in Via Cordusio 4, open Mon-Fri 8.00-19.00; Sat 8.30-12.00, Sun closed. The post office is for postal account payments, money changing etc. Most other post offices are open in the morning only, Mon-Fri 8.00-14.00, Sat 9.30-13.00. Stamps are also available at tobacconists (T sign). Italian first day covers and other philatelic products are sold at Via Cordusio 4. Post informa-tion, tel. 803160, Mon-Sat, 8.00-20.00, www.poste.it.

• Public transportATM. Runs metro, buses and trams. Ordinary tickets cost €1.50 and can be obtained in Metro stations (newsagents, automatic machines, ticket offices in some stations), and from bars displaying the green and orange ATM sticker on the window. Weekly, monthly or yearly season tickets are available. ATM Infopoint are in Duomo, Cadorna, Centrale, Lo-reto and Romolo Metro stations, open Mon-Sat 7.45-19.00. The ordinary ticket should be franked using the machine as soon as you get on a bus or tram, or go through the Met-ro turnstiles, or before getting on an FNM train. The same ticket can be used for 90 minutes from the time franked on the ticket, with any combination of buses and trams.The magnetic ticket should be franked on every journey. The one-day ticket (abbonamento giornaliero, €4.50) and the two-day ticket (abbonamento bigiornaliero, €8.25) last 24/48 hours respectively from the first franking: frank the magnetic ticket on every journey. The Metro system consists of 5 lines, number 1 (red), 2 (green), 3 (yellow), 5 (lilac) and the “Passante Ferroviario” (S trains). Metro trains run from around 6.15 until 00.30, except on Saturday nights when trains run till about 02.00. During the night there is a replacement bus service for parts of lines 1 and 3. There are large interchange car parks at the stations Lampugnano, Bisceglie (M1), Cascina Gobba, Famagosta (M2), open 7.00-01.00 (overnight parking possible). To get to the Rho Fiera trade fair district during fairs you can buy a return ticket at €5 (Andata/ritorno Rho Fiera) or a day ticket (Giornaliero fiera) €7. The normal one or two day ticket is not valid for getting to Rho Fiera. For public transport info, toll-free info at 800.808181 (7.30-19.30), www.atm-mi.it. Radiobus service, operating from 20.00 to 02.00, is like a collective taxi service. A very comfortable air-conditioned minicoach picks you up and takes you where you want to go. You have to book by phone at 02.4803.4803, prefer-ably well in advance – say a few hours – or even just before your trip, but in this case you run the risk of not getting a place as well as spending ages listening to a recorded message. Cost €4 if you pay on the bus, less if you buy the ticket (ordinary ATM ticket + Radiobus ticket, total €3.50) in advance. This service may seem complicated, but it is so convenient and comfortable that it’s well worth the effort.

• RailwaysFS (Ferrovie dello Stato). Train information can be obtained from the information of-fice at the Central Station (Stazione Centrale), or by phone, 892021, or best of all by Internet (www. trenitalia.com). Remember that open date train tickets should be franked using the yellow machines situated at the near end of the platforms, just before boarding the train. A return ticket should be franked again before the return journey. If you forget, you will be fined! If you do forget, try the option to write date and time of your journey in a corner of the ticket, using a pen. If you booked a seat, on your ticket the date is already printed, so it is not necessery to franke it.For many trains, seat booking is obligatory. In any case it is a good idea to buy your ticket early (at least the day before) and book your seat (small extra charge). Saves frustration queuing while your train is about to depart. Be sure to claim your booked seat within ten minutes after departure. For the differently abled and people with sight problems, there is a phone number for the whole of Italy: 199.30.30.60, operating every day, 7.00-21.00.

FNM (Ferrovie Nord) Is the privately-run train service running from Stazione Nord in Piazza Cadorna. An info office is in the Cadorna sta-tion, open 7.00 to 20.00 every day. www.lenord.it Ferrovie Nord trains leave from Cadorna and run to various locations north of Milan, including the lakes and Malpensa airport. • Safety and securityIn Milan, like most large cities, there is a problem of small time theft. Take care of personal possessions at all times! Don’t leave your bags unattended even for a moment, particularly in crowded locations like Piazza Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Also take care in and around the Central Station, and when on trams and metro dur-ing the rush hour. If, at the station or airport, someone approaches you and offers you a taxi, this is not the nor-mal taxi and it will cost much more. This is happening particularly at Linate airport, the taxi turns out to be a chauffeur-driven car with a bill to match. Beware of buying fake merchandise on the street, it will be low quality and it’s also against the law. People selling roses in restaurants have nothing to do with the restaurant, just say no (unless you want one, of course!). If you give money to the many beggars in the city and on the Metro trains you are financ-ing organized crime.

• TaxisIt is almost impossible to stop a taxi on the street in Milan: you have to locate one of the taxi-ranks (see map pages), or call one of the radio taxi firms (02.4040, 02.8585, 02.4000, 02.6969). A few taxis accept credit cards. If in doubt about price, ask the driver for an estimate before setting off. On-line estimates at www.milanotaxi.it

• TelephonesThe 02 dialling code for Milan is incorporated into phone numbers. If you are calling Italy from abroad, you have to include the “0” of this prefix, ie +39.02.(number). Num-bers starting 339, 347, 348 etc. are for mobile phones, these calls cost more. Numbers starting with 0 are for fixed phones, 1 for public utilities (police etc.), 3 for mobiles, 8 for toll-free numbers.

Admission €3/8Throughout 2017, the museum is calling into ac-tion all those willing to share impressions with their “friends”, and post photos or video on Facebook, Twit-ter, Instagram, Youtube, connecting via the hashtag #Museoscienza, to socialize and propagate culture in an innovative way.

• Every Saturday to Sunday. With a ticket for the mu-seum, visitors can participate in guided tours, in Italian with a translation on request, of the Galleria Leonardo and also of the collections of trains, ships and planes in the Transport section. There are currently three unique automobiles on display: Bianchi 8HP, Alfa Romeo Zagato 8C and Bisiluro DaMolNar, symbols of the tradition that has made the Italian car into a world famous icon.

• Permanent exhibition. “Extreme”, in partnership with CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research and INFN National Institute of Nuclear Physics, is a fasci-nating research area, to explore matter in its most infini-tesimal components. The exhibition reveals what goes on inside the laboratories of two of the largest research institutions that carry out experiments related to particle physics.• New permanent exhibition. “The Merz-Repsold tel-escope”, see first page article.

• Inside the Aero-Naval Pavillion. “Luna Rossa,” the rigid wing catamaran AC72 which was a finalist in the selection regattas for the 34th America’s Cup challenge (San Francisco 2013).

• Until 22 October. “Resonances II” promoted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s science and knowledge service, which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy. The exhibition is part of the 60th anniversary celebration program for the Treaty of Rome, signed on 25 March 1957, to estab-lish the European Economic Community (TEEC). The ex-hibited works were made by artists and scientists, from 10 different European countries, who worked together on the concept of “Fairness”, one of the European Com-mission most important issues. • Until 25 February. “Ambienti/Environments” on show 10 environments created by Lucio Fontana be-tween 1949 and 1968 for Italian and international institutions and museums; works of crucial impor-tance highlighting the innovative and precursor force of this great 20th-century master. The spaces, rooms and corridors conceived and designed since the late 1940s, and almost always destroyed at the end of the exhibition, are the most experimental and lesser-known works by Fontana, just because of their ephemeral nature. For this reason, some of those ex-hibited have been rebuilt for the first time since the artist’s demise.

• From 5 to 14 October. “La Grande Occasione” (The Great Opportunity), a special edition of Video Sound Art Festival, in collaboration with the Institut Français Milano, presents a solo show by the French artist Hoël Duret. The complex site specific installa-tion “NFT pH <7” -with video, painting, a green-house and its irrigation system- recalls, through the reconstruction of a fake natural home system, the pictorial tradition of the landscape. As a lively and mechanical organism, NFT pH <7 is a neutral soil: neither too basic nor too acidic. A video performance shows the awakening of a nymph who passes through this scene inside a crowd of an electronic music festival.
