CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
When one looks at our industry it is certainly one which combines many talents of individuals to produce a cast part. The meeting this month represents a change from the normal format of a general appeal topic to one which is directed at a select group of individuals within our industry. The ability to perform a chemical analysis of our product fits the phase "we have come a long way baby". The movement from a wet chemical labo-ratory performing selective analysis to a hand held unit giving more information than we really need to know represents this transition. Please pass information on this meeting to your technical individuals so that they can take advantage of the opportunity of seeing where the industry stands now.

Government is Shaping Your Industry's Future —Are You?
Everyday policymakers in Washington are in-volved in decisions that impact your business' bottom line. Each new initiative in DC including foreign trade, environmental issues and defense spending has the potential to either be a boon for your company or bust it. Recently, the Occupational Safety and Health Ad-ministration (OSHA) proposed a draft rule to drastically change how your company monitors your employees' exposure to crystalline silica. If allowed to go through, as is, it could devastate the foundry industry. Foreign trade and the loss of domestic manufac-turing remain strong topics of conversation in DC. Many think this is all cyclical and if left alone manufacturing will rebound. Can your company afford to just sit back and wait for a possible re-bound?
This is an election year. Now is not the time to be silent. Join us in DC to tell your elected gov-ernment officials what is happening to your busi-ness. Plan to attend the 2004 AFS Metalcasting Industry Government Affairs Conference, March 21-23, 2004.
We need your voice in Washington. It is criti-cal for our industry's survival. Highlights of this year's conference will include the signing of a cooperative ageement between OSHA, the Department of Labor and AFS; Mor-ton Kondracke will be the keynote speaker at the Monday luncheon and Joe Bogosian, assistant secretary of Commerce will address the admini-stration's manufacturing initiative. Other speakers will include Donald Manzullo, US Representative from Illinois; Paul Ruesch from the EPA Region V; Stephen Gold from the National Manufacturing Association and Paul Freedenberg from Ad-vanced Manufacturing Technology.
For more information or to register for the 2004 AFS Metalcasting Industry Government Affairs Conference, contact AFS at 800/537-4237 or visit our website at www.afsinc.oLg.

The Brass Monkey
In the heyday of sailing ships, all military ships and many freight carrying vessels were outfit-ted with cannons. Of course, these cannons fired round iron cannon balls. For obvious rea-sons it was necessary to keep a good supply of balls near the cannon. But the great sailor's dilemma - how to prevent them from rolling about and damaging the deck?
The best storage method devised was a square based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon.
There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from un-der the others. The solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey" with 16 round indentations. If this plate were made of iron (and naturally exposed to salt water), the iron balls would quickly rust to it, making it exceedingly diffi-cult to load the cannon. The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Mon-keys." -
Few landlubbers realize that brass, when chilled, contracts much more and a whole lot faster than iron. Consequently, when the tem-perature dropped too far too fast, the brass in-dentations would shrink so much so that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a Brass Mon-key!"

Casting for Hollywood Driving past the city of Philadelphia you can't help notice the
massive William Penn statue perched on City Hall. The 28 ton bronze statue was cast and assembled in 1891 by the Tacony Iron and Steel Company, which was near what is now the base of the Tacony Bridge on the Delaware River. The statue con-sisted of over forty individual castings and would be assembled to 37' in height. In addition to the "Billy Penn" statute, Tacony Iron and Steel manufactured the entire iron framework and the dozens of ornamental castings that adorn City Hall.
The Tacony Iron and Steel Company was so well recognized in the field of casting and fabrication that a feature article about the company appeared in the October 1892 issue of Scientific America. Even after such fame and notoriety, the company fell into dire financial circumstances and closed it's doors for good in 1910.
The foundry claimed it's final fame when Siegmund "Pop" Lubin (a celebrated film producer in the early 1900's) decided to use the abandoned site in 1914 for his epic film "Gods of Fate". In the final scene, the small, controlled fire staged to rescue the stars from certain death, quickly got out of control - that was the real end for Tacony Iron and Steel and possibly an omen for the Lubin Company whose main film storage warehouse burned to the ground that same year, jettisoning the company to a quick end.
The building remained a skeletal, scorched pile of rubble, until the Dodge Steel Company was started on the site in 1919. Dur-ing 30's and 40's, Dodge Steel became one of the most techni-cally advanced and well-known steel foundries in the country. Eventually the Dodge Steel Company occupied 100,000 square feet of buildings at this location.
Soon to come, the site at the Tacony Bridge would again be idolized by the film industry. Two days after Pearl Harbor, foun-dry worker Albert Schmid left his family and job at Dodge Steel to join the Marines. In August 1942, Schmid was manning a machine-gun emplacement on the Tenaru River at Guadalcanal with orders "to hold at all costs" this important post protecting Henderson Airfield. Although a grenade injured Schmid and killed his partner, he single-handedly held his position and fought the Japanese for over four hours. Of the nearly 1,200 Japanese soldiers who reportedly tried to cross the Tenaru River that night, eighteen were wounded, two captured, and the rest killed.
Hollywood soon picked up the story. A feature film titled "Pride of the Marines" was released in the mid-1940's starring John Garfield as Al Schmid and Eleanor Parker as Ruth Hart-ley, Schmid's girlfriend and eventual wife. Parts of the movie were filmed at Schmid's home and Dodge Steel.
That was the beginning of the end, by the 1960's and 1970's; the only headlines made by the Dodge Steel Company were those of labor unrest. Striking union employees were now the only people making it to the TV screens. Mounting cash flow problems, caused by decreasing demand, remote management and out of control wage increases led to the ultimate closure in 1986. For six years, the site became the dumping grounds of choice for everything from tires to waste oil.
In 1992, as a final tribute to the once mammoth industrial site with a 100-year history of foundry excellence, local artist Brian C. Moss chose the abandoned foundry site as the subject of a nationally recognized photographic exposé 'What Helps Dodge Helps You."
In 1994, the federal and city government razed the site, what's left is a barren concrete slab the only remnant of this once proud industrial center. To this day, the site remains eerily vacant.
