Nelson’s big building boom probably a bit more confidence in the mar-ket place. We’ve been terribly quiet and there was limited commer-cial work around town but now we’ve got plen-ty of work and we’ve been advertising for more staff.”Quest Serviced Apart-ments were granted re-source consent earlier this month to build a five storey complex on Collingwood St. May-

oral candidate Rachel Reese says the devel-opment is great for the CBD. “The answer to a vibrant CBD is people. What better than an in-ternational high profile accommodation pro-vider right in the heart of the city?”The development at Quarantine Rd, next to Mitre 10 Mega, dubbed Nelson Junction aims to bring 30 retailers to the site with construc-tion due to start in the middle of next year.

something he even admits himself. “Some people say ‘oh I’d love to be a fo-rensic photographer’ but in reality they probably wouldn’t,” says Rob. “Homi-cides can be quite horrific but it’s not just the scene but the mortuary process afterwards, photographing the entire procedure. If they’ve got a lot of inju-ries, well you have to photograph all of them. But you can’t take it home, you have to be able to let it go and you can’t be emotionally involved.”The job of a forensic photographer in-volves recording a scene as accurately as possible through his Canon 1D, or in Rob’s words “collecting evidence for the court”. Which could be why his hobby photography is more about positivity, creativity and things with much hap-

pier emotions. “With your own stuff you have license to do whatever you want. But with the police you must re-cord everything as it is. It doesn’t matter if it’s a crash scene in the middle of the country and in the middle of the night and it’s pouring with rain, you have to record everything.” Rob lists plane crashes as the worst scenes to attend, explaining the process of getting there often involves sitting in a helicopter with its doors removed. “You’re flying into an area where you know an aircraft has gone down but you don’t know why and it messes with your mind. It’s crashed and burned and now you’re flying in to the same area with no doors on.”He attends around 1300 jobs a year, ranging from graffiti to murders, but says the hardest one to forget was a

home invasion where the victim was stabbed 12 times but still survived. “There was blood everywhere, he ran through the home trying to get away from his attackers and there was just massive, massive amounts of blood. I went to see him two days later and he was up in bed talking, and two days af-ter that I saw him walking in the street. I have been to jobs where people have died from one stab wound and here he was stabbed numerous times and being up and about.”But it’s not just the images he sees and the things he smells which make being a forensic photographer a difficult job to stomach, the hours can be extremely long. While people might call it one of those jobs that ‘someone has to do’, Rob couldn’t think of doing anything else. “But it’s not everybody’s cup of tea.”

Zerlina Kohu, Tahuna.

“Make parking cheaper be-cause it is way too expensive at the moment.”

Kevin Hedge, Stoke.

“Create a designated place for teenagers to go to hangout, be safe and have fun without the temptation of breaking rules.”

Ruth Adams, Nelson.

“I love Nelson but as an idea, closing Trafalgar St between Bridge and Hardy to traffic, with food carts and seating to create a more vibrant centre.”

Louis Hornell, Nelson.

“Fix the drainage problems. There are obviously major issues especially in residential areas.”

Years of work is about to pay off big for Stoke with the con-struction of a new $1.2 million facility to be put in the council’s draft annual plan. The proposed building on the edge of Greenmeadows sports field could house clubrooms for the Stoke Tennis Club, Stoke Rugby Club and other community groups, like the Stoke Social Seniors.Nelson Cricket has also thrown its support behind the idea and Stoke Rugby club captain Mal Lowrie says it could be just the beginning. “We see this as a community thing, a hub for Stoke. Stoke needs something like this and while the rugby club will help drive it, it’s really for the people of Stoke.”Earlier this year Nelson Weekly reported that Stoke Rugby Club was selling its Songer St club-rooms in the hope that it would help fund the new clubrooms. After that article Mal says Nel-son mayor Aldo Miccio got in touch to help bring it to real-ity and he says support from

councillors has also been good. “We’ve had meetings with Pete Rainey and now Rachel Reese is saying she’s supportive as well, which is great. We aren’t worried about politics, we see how much this would mean to Stoke and want to do what we can to make it happen.”The proposed facility would be two-storied and have a viewing platform over the tennis courts and another over the rugby field. Mal says the rugby club would move its main ground to be right in front of the new facility. Nelson Cricket Association president Dave Leonard says cricket is played at venues across Nelson and Greenmead-ows in particular is used exten-sively by junior teams. He says the association would support

the building because it could be used by teams on Saturday mornings in the summer and perhaps for a business-house cricket competition on a week night in the summer months. Stoke Cricket Club plays its games at Marsden Rec and is understood to be happy where it is and would be unlikely to want to move.Aldo says a new facility would mean a great deal to the village.“We’ve been working for sev-eral months with the rugby club and council staff and it’s been coming together really well. With all the different us-ers from seniors to youth it will create a real hub for Stoke.”Mal says if the project gets the go ahead at the next annual plan process it could be built by 2015.

Nelson’s newest social housing develop-ment will set the benchmark for future projects in the region says Nelson Tas-man Housing Trustee Doug McClearie. At the official opening of Waimarama Crescent, in the Brook Valley on Friday Doug said there is a lot of satisfaction in seeing the eco-friendly homes, that will be rented to low to mid income local families, finished. “It has been a long time coming and it has involved a lot of work by a lot of peo-ple, but it has really been a worthwhile exercise.”He says the success of the development, built by Hybrid Homes on land gifted to the trust by the Nelson City Coun-cil, showed that “high quality, low price housing” was the way forward for “effi-cient” community housing. With half the project funding coming from Housing New Zealand Corpora-tion in the form of a $1.3m loan from their Housing Innovation Fund, Hous-ing Minister and Nelson MP Nick Smith says further projects would continue to require “a broad partnership” and he ac-knowledged the Nelson City Council for coming on board and allowing the land to be used. “The solution is going to be house by house, community by community, get-

ting on top of the affordability issue. It’s the land part of the cost that’s doing the most damage, and it is really important that both government and local authori-ties are shaking the tin and saying where have we got a bit of land that we could better utilize.”

Local retired woman Helen Lynch who will be one of the first tenants at the new development says she loves the idea of living “green” and as a pensioner didn't believe she would be able to afford to live anywhere else. “The rent’s cheaper, and the bills will be cheaper, it's great.”

Pet cat loses leg in illegal trapA disgusting act of animal cruelty has left someone’s pet cat with only three legs, as it crawled for shelter with an illegal gin trap clamped through its front left paw.The neutered male tabby cat was discovered at the edge of the Hope School field last month and Nelson SPCA animal welfare officer Andy Rolfe admits there was a chance the animal could have been put down, before the final decision was made to amputate the leg instead. “It’s dragged itself towards the building because animals tend to go for cover when they’re injured,” says Andy. “It was obviously really bad in its leg. We had two choices really; either the cat was going to be put to sleep or there was going to be an amputation, and we’ve taken a decision as a society to help the animal.”Andy says the gin traps are illegal and shouldn’t be used at all, and the location of the trap, which was near a school, was concerning to the SPCA. “It’s twofold really. The fact that people are still using illegal traps because potentially they can cause all sorts of damage to animals and there are plenty of people who walk dogs along that area. There’s always a chance a child could come across it and get damaged. It is my belief that the person who has set this type of trap has acted with complete disregard for safety of animals and has certainly acted illegally by setting the trap.”

The owner of the cat and the owner of the trap are yet to be identified and Andy was hoping to hear from both parties, although that task can be difficult. “We’re doing everything we can to find the owner. We’ve probably drawn a blank on [the owner of the trap] and we’re interested to hear if any others have been trapped in this vicinity.” The cat is currently housed at Halifax Veterinary Centre and will be taken to the SPCA this week while the search for the owner continues. It has to learn to walk again and has broken teeth from trying to chew its way out of the trap.

Let the race beginFour in for mayor, 34 to stand for council Thirty four nominees will campaign for just 12 positions at this year’s Nelson City Council elections, while four will contest the mayoralty.Nominations for the council elections closed on Friday and there were no late surprises with the field for mayor still at just four.Aldo Miccio, Rachel Reese, Brian McGurk and Richard Osmaston will battle for the mayoral chains but with Richard using the election as a platform for his views on a money-less society, it will essentially be three-horse race. Brian, a former police chief, is also standing for council and even if he is unsuccessful in the mayoral race, he will benefit from the added exposure it will give him and could be expected to poll well for a seat around the council table. The two favourites without doubt are the incumbent Aldo Miccio and former deputy mayor and current councillor Rachel Reese. The two were also part of the field during the local body elections in 2010 where Aldo pipped Rachel to the top job. Expect this year’s race to be brutal with both candidates desperate for the job and with what appears to be a deep dislike for each other. There are 12 seats available at the council elections and with four of the current councillors not seeking re-election there is some serious room for a bolter to make an impression during

the campaign. Among the 34-strong nominee list is a mix of current councillors, those involved in various community groups and even media personalities.Other names will be familiar to many Nelsonians, Lee Corlett is well known for his work with keeping children active, Trudie Brand is the manager for the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge and Derek Nees is the president of the RSA in the top of the south. The full list of nominees for Nelson City Council is; Luke Acland, John Armstrong, Ian Barker, Cindy Batt, Trudie Brand, Hugh Briggs, Ruth Copeland, Lee Corlett, Rosina Cornelissen, Eric Davy, Jean Edwards, Kate Fulton, Kevin Gardener, Carl Horn, Owen Houliston, Matt Lawrey, Colleen Marshall, Paul Matheson, Brian McGurk, Rob McKegney, Derek Nees, Gaile Noonan, Graeme O’Brien, Brent Pahl, Pete Rainey, Colin Robertson, Kent Robertson, Joy Shackleton, Derek Shaw, Rober Siataga/Kavanagh, Tim Skinner, Gaire Thompson, John Walker and Mike Ward.

If all goes according to plan, Easter’s message of death and resurrection will never have more meaning than in 2014 for one Stoke church.Work has begun on a new $1.5 million church on Main Rd Stoke and its completion date is marked down for April 18, Good Friday. That means it could do its Good Friday ser-vice in its current, aging facility and its Easter Sunday service in its new building.Elim Church pastor Richard Batchelar isn’t counting his chickens though and says what-ever date they get in will be ex-citing. “The church is rapt, we’ve got some great momentum and it’s really exciting.”Elim Church announced plans for the new church last Septem-ber and work began this month.

When the new building is up the old one will be pulled down and turned into a car park. It will give the church a modern facility for its services and other programmes it organises like its holiday programme and af-

ter school programme. Richard says other community groups will also make use of it. “We want to be in the commu-nity and we are, so it fits really well with what we want to do. It’s an exciting time.”

Cannabis on main cycle trackAn Enner Glyn cyclist has been left with a “hard-case” story to tell after coming across a cultivated cannabis plant on a main cycle trail.Sheila Scott was cycling with some friends from Richmond to Stoke last week when she saw what looked like a healthy cannabis plant, fresh out of its pot and with a water gauge still stuck in the dirt around the plant. She says she couldn’t believe it.“At the time we thought ‘we should take a photo of this because it’s just unbelievable’. You don’t just go out for a ride and come across that on the cycleway.”She says the plant was around a metre high and half as wide. She says she recognised it straight away after her years working as a police officer. “My first thought was just disbelief really. I was 99 per cent sure it was what I thought it was so we called the police.”The plant most likely rolled off a

trailer and down the bank next to the trail says Sheila. It was around 50 metres past Lockwood Homes, on the Richmond Deviation. “You could tell it had been in a pot because the potting mix was root-bound and it had the water meter still in the base of it.”When the police picked it up they confirmed it was indeed a cannabis plant and destroyed it. “I’m sure someone will be pissed off because they’re missing it but we just couldn’t leave it there,” she says.Finding a plant while cycling wasn’t a huge surprise to Sheila, but finding one on the main highway certainly was. “You’d expect it if you were biking up in the mountains and saw one but you don’t expect it on Nelson’s main cycleway do you? And especially one that size.”

A wild pig ran amok around Richmond last week, racing into a construction site and charging at workers before it was caught by police at Washbourn Gardens.Estimated to weigh around 30 kilograms, the wild pig was being followed down Oxford St before darting into a Coman Construction site. Foreman Kris Renwick says it came onto the property at about midday. “I turned around and there was a pig just standing there,” he says. “It must

have been running down the footpath but it came on site and next minute it started having a go at one of the guys who had to jump over it.”Kris says the pig’s next move involved jumping over foundations, running at another worker who was holding a wheel barrow. From there it ran towards Washbourn Gardens where it was eventually stopped in its tracks by members of the public and police.

John Bergman, a contracted animal controller for the Tasman District Council, confirmed the incident and says the pig was tied up and put in the back of his truck before being taken to the pound. “Reports were coming in from Richmond

where people had been seeing it and then the police got involved at Washbourn Gardens,” he says.John also says there had been a sighting in William St last week and it was realistic to believe it could be the same pig.He says it is common for hunters to keep hold of pigs until they are grown up, if the mother had been killed. If the pig is not claimed it would be sold at auction.

Nelson lose cup finalNelson College has missed its best chance in years to win back the Press Cup, suffering a 15-11 loss to Marlborough Boys’ College at a sodden Lansdowne Park on Saturday.Having spent the first 60 minutes of the final without the ball in their hands, Nelson finally awoke in the dying stages of the game and sniffed what would have been a remarkable comeback when halfback Reece Fuller dove over to score. The conversion was missed, however, meaning Nelson had to score a try in the final two minutes to win.Nelson College coach Bill Liddell refused to use the weather as an excuse but says “all of the stars aligned” for Marlborough, whose forward pack was well suited to the conditions. “It might have been different on a firm, dry track but it was played in rain and wind and all credit to them, they deserved to win.”

Students to strut their stuff for schoolThe Nelson College for Girls school hall will be transformed next week for the Spring Fashion Fling. The event was held for the first time last year as a fundraiser for the college's PTA. It attracted a sell-out audience and was such a success that the college is at it again, preparing for this year's spring fling on August 31 at the college. The Spring Fashion Fling involves students and some teachers model-ling clothing from local fashion stores. There will also be a silent auction, enter-tainment and raffles. Organiser Brenda Holdaway says the event is shaping up to be another huge success. "We've al-ready sold a lot of the tables and the girls are excited to get out there and do the college proud."There are still some tickets available for the fling. They can be bought from the college's reception. For more informa-tion call Nelson College for Girls on 548 3104.

Tahunanui protest heard loud and clearConcerned Tahunanui residents have won the fight to have their voices heard, after a protest around safety concerns on the communi-ty's main street resulted in droves of supporters showing up to a pub-lic forum last week.Mike Thomas, chair of the Ta-hunanui Business Association, says after initially wondering how many people would front to the fo-rum, he was pleased with the turn-out which included eight council-lors, mayor Aldo Miccio, business owners and concerned citizens.“I think it showed the support of the community. We weren’t quite sure how many people were going to turn up, but we had 100 chairs out and we had just over 100 peo-ple turn up. We talked about the issues, and it was a really lively dis-cussion all round.”The association has been lobbying for NZTA to listen to their ideas and worries about State Highway 6, and in particular a busy inter-section which passes through the centre of the Tahunanui commu-nity. Mike says the ideal outcome would be to remove the clearways, put back the parking and improve the safety of the intersection in question, which controls traffic travelling on or turning off, the main road. “There were a couple of accidents here last Monday, a car accident and someone actually got hit, a pedestrian was hurt. We’ve got to improve the safety aspects all round. The trouble you’ve got is that it is a very, very busy intersec-tion.” He says the main issue to tackle

is the fact that the community doesn’t want to see that road get-ting busier. "We’d like to see the road go back to a single lane, and to keep within our village layout, and stay a seaside village com-munity. Which is very hard when NZTA want to keep putting heavy traffic through it all the time.”The strong representation from Nelson City Council at the meet-ing did not go unnoticed, and the support was appreciated. “It’s one of those things, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, you’ve got to make a bit of noise.”Aldo Miccio says he was pleased communication was open with the people of Tahunanui, and he has always been on board with their concerns. He shares the group's safety concerns over the intersec-tion and believes keeping the car-parks and making the road one lane will make it "incredibly" safer. "Community has got to be a factor for NZTA. I know their job is to move traffic as fast as they can all around the country, but you have to take into consideration the local community." Aldo also says a proposed shop-ping development by the Wakatu Incorporation to take over the Ocean Lodge site and the news that Marist Rugby Club could be looking to move their clubrooms to the Tahunanui domain is also great for ongoing community de-velopment.

Birthday celebration cut down by thief

Hair Craft owner Dianne MacMorland is angered by a recent break in that left her salon stripped of her hair styling tools. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Dianne MacMorland should be celebrating 14 years of success at her local hair salon, but instead she is spending the anniversary adding up just how much she’s lost to thieves who targeted the salon last Thursday night.Hair Craft, on Tahunanui’s main road, had its back window smashed in and was burgled, with the culprits making off with more than $4000 worth of equipment. Saddened and angry at the thoughtless crime, Dianne is appealing for anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward with the information. Items that were stolen include hair straightners, clippers, products,

money, even the stylist’s scissors. All of which were a shock to find missing when she arrived at work the next day. “The till was all over the floor, they’d taken the float and five minutes later we realised they had taken all of the equipment.” She says it isn’t the first time local businesses have been broken into, with the bead studio next door being burgled just two weeks ago. “I don’t think they understand that excess on commercial insurance is $1000. That’s fine for the big businesses, but it makes it very hard for small businesses.”Any information on the burglary should be given to the Nelson police.

They say the way to our hearts is definitely through our stomachs and that couldn’t be more true for Nelsonians says Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq who has been overwhelmed at the response to the mall’s recipe search. She says the amount of nostalgia, sentiment and great photos that have accompanied recipe entries into the 40th anniversary celebration book has been

amazing and proves that family and food go hand in hand. While the search is on for all recipes, Belinda says it could almost be the search for Nelson’s sweetest tooth with the amount of entries into desserts, sweets and party food but there has been a great mix of mains, sauces and drinks too. “The response has been amazing, and we encourage the public to keep them

coming.” Any entry handed in before next Friday will also go in the draw to win a food processor, which has been kindly donated by Farmers Richmond. To submit your favourite recipe for consideration for the cookbook, which will be distributed free to every home in the region, pick up an entry form from the customer service desk at the mall. A conversation over the garden fence has resulted in serious savings for some local neighbours, who have collectively taken the power back from their elec-tricity providers.Six Nelson households are reaping the rewards of bulk buying their way into solar energy, and Maitai Valley home-owner Peter Hulland says more peo-ple should consider group negotiat-ing when it comes to connecting their homes.Tired of rising power bills, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect for Peter when he started talking to neigh-bour Keith Preston about the benefits of solar energy. “I discovered that my neighbour had been thinking about it as well, and he passed it onto some of his acquaintances. Lots of people had been thinking about it you see and so it snowballed from there.”After a bit of researching Peter found a local company who would cut the fami-lies a deal if they installed solar tech-nology onto their homes. “They were quite keen to come around and have a look and get everybody on board. We got quite a good deal out of it, it was certainly a lot cheaper than it

would have been if any one of us had gone in individually.”Peter estimates each family saved around $4000 on the initial installation price, and says they are already sav-ing money on their power bill just 18 months later. The technology involved means the solar system generates more than enough power for his home, with any surplus being fed back to the elec-tricity grid which is then credited to his account by his electricity supplier.

“The beauty of it is when you generate too much, you just sell the electricity back to the electricity company, and when you need it you buy it back off them. You actually get the benefit of all that excess that you produce during the summer months.”Peter says anyone thinking about switching to solar energy should se-riously consider forming a cluster to boost buying power. "I would definitely recommend it.”

Quake zone affects 1100 homes

Family bulk buy solar savingsUpdated information means 730 Nelson families will no longer live on the fault hazard overlay that runs through the Wood, but 1100 properties re-main on it.Nelson City Council will update its overlay, nar-rowing it in most places, which means hundreds of properties will soon sit outside the zone. Sixty seven properties have been added however. The overlay imposes controls on building and sub-division on the properties within the overlay to manage risk from ground ruptures along the fault line in an earthquake. The council has sent a letter to each home affected by the change and Nelson City Council’s Martin Workman says some landowners didn’t even know they were on the overlay.

Life writer a great idea:Dorothy wrote my father’s biogra-phy 12 years ago. We appreciated

this so much and we are lucky as a com-munity to have someone like Dorothy who cares so much. It would have been my fa-ther’s birthday today so this reminder is a lovely present. Thank you Dorothy. Lianne (via www.nelsonweekly.co.nz).

What an amazing idea and lovely lady. Lauren Saunders.

One way door policy for our bars:It would be a good thing but how about they start it at 3am and run it

through till 6am. Clinton Harvey.

Yes it is a good idea Nelson is a hor-rid place to be Friday and Saturday

nights. Simon Scowen.

If the bar owners etc, reject the al-cohol plan, then perhaps they too

should come up with ways to combat the aftermath of potential alcohol fueled beatings, vandalism, etc etc...work with their community not against it. Bar owners/manag-ers want to keep the money rolling in, while parents want their kids home unharmed and safe. Busi-ness owners want their doorways clear of vomit and urine, cars un-damaged, the list goes on. Just say-ing... Sharon May Patterson.

No. Nelson is a tourist town heaps of tourists and

visitors come to Nelson to party every year. The tourists don’t un-derstand these rule. Bars and res-taurants are a business why should we let stupid young idiots with no respect or self control ruin it for everyone else? The current prob-lem all over NZ is caused by 18-25 year olds still living at home with mum and dad not paying a cent for anything or lifting a finger to do anything and spending up large on alcohol and drugs while their parents are stupidly financially as-

sisting them (by paying for everything) so they can continue to do so.... Come on par-ents wake up stop babying them and think about it... has a light gone on yet? 21st birthday cut them loose and cut them off financially bye bye time to go flatting time to be an adult. Louise Armstrong.

Rubbish a problem:This morning I was walking along the railway reserve in Stoke. I was

appalled to see the rubbish dumped in the creek, including a bag of mussels. And empty bottles and rubbish along the re-serve. Keeping NZ clean is not someone else’s responsibility. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us. Di Chandler.

Help for our elders:Question to our mature council representatives, what have they

done to further the needs of our elders? A Council of Elders Trust would provide a consultative mechanism to the NCC for the ageing community and its service sec-tors partners. Your Community Newspaper Weekly

Elected trust members would include agencies such as MSD, Sports Tas-man, Greypower, Age Concern, the NM-DHB, and the Positively Aging Forum. The trust would consult on policies such as car parking, public transport, sports and rec-reation facilities and festivals. An old idea but a good one. Phil Thompson.

Love your location,

but tired of your house?

• And so the potato saga continues. Well it has to because I have a juicy piece of news for you. A lady told me how her dad used to grow his potato crop many years ago. He had a large family to provide for, and potatoes loomed large in the vege garden and on the daily menu. He first made a trench. This was cov-ered with several layers of news-paper. She said the paper was dry, but I have a problem with this, as dry paper stays very dry indeed. So I would suggest moist newspa-per. The paper was then covered with straw, and then it was the turn of the potatoes. These are covered with more newspaper, more straw, and finally a thin layer of soil. If the potato shoots should come through while the weather was still cold, he would add another layer of straw. And now, here comes the best bit. At harvest time the potatoes were clean! The other good thing was, if early potatoes were required be-fore the crop was ready for harvest, he simply rolled back the layers, took what was needed, and rolled the layers back in place to carry on growing. I certainly think this is worth a try, don’t you?• Maybe at this stage I should pre-sent my credentials to you. Well the truth is, I don’t have any! There are no fancy letters to fit behind my name. Apart from wife, mother, homemaker. The very first plant that I cultivated turned out to be a weed! Someone had given me a plant which had obviously died, and a weed grew vigorously in its place [as they do!] I’m sure you will know the one. The foliage looks a bit like a foxglove and it sends up a tall stem. Very wishy-washy, tawny flowers, and the seeds! Oh dear, at the slightest breeze they erupt into a cascade of seeds that I swear all germinate. One day I proudly said to my mother “Look at my cosmos, it’s doing well isn’t it?” To which she replied “It’s a weed you silly girl!” • And then we bought a small farm, with a shockingly dilapidated

house on it. And something hap-pened. I remember the “click” of gardening interest one day. It came out of the blue and has remained with me ever since. To feed my in-terest, I haunted the local library and came home laden with garden-ing books. Not necessarily “how to” books. Gardening can be achieved with common sense. I wanted to learn about plant varieties, their growing requirements, flowering seasons. I learnt about seasonal col-ours, the beauty of winter, the ex-citement of spring, later flowering plants in summer, and autumn col-ours. Some of my favourite authors include Margery Fish with her huge knowledge of perennials. She tells about her failures as well as her successes. Beth Chatto who deals with natural gardens including us-ing various grasses. Vita Sackville-West, who created the garden of Sissinghurst Castle. She is a must for plant knowledge, and I must mention Stephen Lacey. He is so passionate about plants and chang-ing colours through the seasons. It is not advisable to read his book in bed. He writes so well, you will be tossing about in anticipation of getting out there and getting stuck in regardless of day or night. Bed mates may not be happy. And so my farm garden grew, just like Topsy. I will refrain from telling you more of my gardening attempts, except to say that eventually, with the help of our adult daughter Marie, we start-ed a small plant nursery attached to my garden where folk could see the plants growing and gain experience from that. From those small begin-nings a much larger garden centre was born, and then another has been added as well. Well there are my credentials such as they are.• To close here is another tip. To prevent your broad beans from growing too tall, pinch out the tips at the top of the stems. They will stop reaching for the skies and will create more side branches, hence more beans!

Ask An ExpErt Should I use Xero accounting software?Yes. My reasons are:1. As an accountant I can see your accounting records anytime, and can help you plan for tax payments, review profits, check GST, and provide business advice on a timely manner rather than at year end.2. Accounting records are accessed from any computer at anytime, Xero is based in the cloud, hence why it is called cloud accounting. 3. If your main computer gets a virus or no backups are kept, your accounting records are safe, they are stored and backed in the cloud, away from your hard drive.Should I have my payroll with cloud accounting? Yes, I recommend SmartPayroll, a system stored in the cloud and accessible from any computer. Your payroll updates automatically with law changes, staff holiday and sick pay calculated accurately, even email payslips to staff. Very easy to use.Come along to my free seminar on 22nd August where I will be covering these topics.

Ask An ExpErt What is happening in the Nelson residential Real Estate market?Steady to strong sales through the winter months with first home buyers leading the way, many of those eager to purchase before any potential changes to deposit ratio’s. We still have many Cantabrians moving to Nelson, with some Red zoners still being paid out and saying they are fed up with traffic problems e.t.c. so moving up here to sunny Nelson! There are also a few investors about but they tend to be only searching for bargains. So all in all plenty of action in the market, but with a very informed buyer with access to recent sales statistics we are not seeing rampant price inflation but definitely upward pressure on prices and good sales. For sure a “sellers” market that looks likely to continue for some time. What can Simon offer you when selling your home?Simon has consistently been a top selling local Nelson agent for several years and has built a great reputation and referral network. Simon can offer you a fair and reasonable commission rate so you can maximize your profit, combined with a professional marketing package utilizing a sought-after professional photographer, all major websites, and the Property Press.

Why do I need specialist services when it comes to subdividing? Subdividing is a surprisingly long and complex process. What is done now will have an impact long into the future. Legally, you are required to use a Licensed Surveyor to produce the plans required for subdivision. This ensures your titles/ boundaries are government guaranteed. We cover all aspects of subdivision from feasibility to creating the new titles. This gives us a unique advantage in managing the subdivision process.Do I need a surveyor for an easement or a boundary adjustment? Yes. In most cases a surveyor will need to create a plan for an easement. A boundary adjustment requires a full resource consent and new legal plan. Again, a Surveyor can guide you through the process. What makes Jones & Associates the best choice for expert advice when it comes to subdividing? We have a team of friendly, trained, experienced professionals. Come and see either Andrew Stanger or Simon Jones for a free initial consultation and find out what we can do for you.

Why get a pre purchase inspection?Your lending institute or insurance company may require one or you for your own peace of mind. A good report should identify areas of risk, moisture problems, rot and borer, structural defects and areas due for maintenance. These issues can help you with what additional costs you may incur immediately or in the near future and may affect the agreed purchase price.Who can do an inspection? The current Sales and Purchase agreement form requires a Suitably Qualified building inspector. However anyone can carry out an inspection. We recommend you use someone experienced in building inspections, who follows the New Zealand Standard NZS 4306:2005 for residential Property inspection, who has the correct tools for the job and with appropriate professional indemnity insurance. Why use ASAP building inspections?Because we have 14 years inspection experience and many years’ experience in the building industry, work to New Zealand Standard NZS 4306:2005, have moisture meters, a thermal camera and other tools to assist us identify faults, have professional indemnity insurance, and have a proven reputation for providing quality reports.

I gave a tenant a 90-day notice to vacate and the tenant acknowledged it. I would like to show the property to prospective tenants with a view to re-let but the current tenant refuses to allow viewings. Can I legally request to be let in for that purpose before the termination date, and if so from what date can I start showing the property to others?Your rights are detailed in the Residential Tenancies Act 1986. Section 48(3)(a) states that “With the prior consent of the tenant the landlord may enter the premises at any reasonable time for the purposes of showing the premises to prospective tenants”. That means that you must have the tenant’s consent first. However, subsection (3A) goes on to state that “the tenant may not withhold his or her consent unreasonably”. To back this up, subsection (4) makes the tenant’s failure to allow the landlord access for this purpose, without reasonable excuse, an “unlawful act”. There is no mention of the amount that a tenant can be fined; presumably that is a matter for the Tenancy Tribunal to work out in the particular circumstances. www.quinovic.co.nz

SPORTNelson's top young tennis talent had to battle with plenty of out-of-towners in the Nelson Junior Winter Open over the weekend.More than a third of the players were from out of Nelson, giving our local talent a run for their money. Luke Innes-Walker stepped up to the play joining his brother Sam in the 10 boys, giving a brave performance as the only eight boys entry. Sam Innes-Walker played the tournament of his life beating top seed Liam Adams in the quarters and winning the final against Finlay Emslie-Rob-son from Canterbury. Marshall Hore, number 2 seed, played solid and well controlled tennis getting through to the play off for 3rd and 4th losing to Oliver Molloy. It was a Nelson final in the 10 year girls, with Far-rah Richards beating Olivia Yankov-Reid. Despite

second place, Olivia showed amazing form in her first ever tennis tournament. Ryan Mairs of Upper Moutere went down to the top seen in the first round then fought back, win-ing all his remaining games to take the 10 boys plate final. His sister Nicole met Holly Mace in a hard hitting 14/16 girls final, both girls playing great tennis. Holly has gone from strength to strength over the past months. The 12 boys competition was dominated by out of towners, with the strongest local contestant being Corbin McFadyen who lost to the winner in the quarter finals. Jordan Berry, seeded 6th in the 12 girls, finished 4th. She had a wonderful weekend playing great competitive tennis. Local boy Oscar Symons won the 14 boys plate final.

TSB Bank was set up in 1850 on the principles of self-reliance and independence. And 160 years on, those principles are still true today.

It has grown into New Zealand’s largest and strongest independent bank. It’s been a great success story, but not one without its challenges.

Back in 1985 the government proposed to merge all of New Zealand’s twelve independent banks into one big one. They delivered an ultimatum – get in line or be doomed.

TSB Bank decided they didn’t want to throw away 130 years of independence. They knew it wouldn’t be in the best interests of their customers. The pressure to merge was intense – from the other banks, and the government.

TSB Bank stood firm.

The merger went ahead without them. But within a few years it faltered and was sold off to a big Aussie bank.

How did it work out for TSB Bank?

They went from strength to strength – with customers from Cape Reinga to Bluff, to all corners of the world.

They’re still making their own decisions. Still giving customers the kind of care and attention they’ve always been known for.Putting customers first is as important to them today as it was nearly 28 years ago. As far as they’re concerned, it’s just a better way to bank.

100% New Zealand ownedNot having overseas owners means that they can make decisions based on what’s best for their customers. So if they want to NOT charge you cheque, ATM1 or EFTPOS transaction fees, it’s up to them. Having real people on the other end of the phone when you call? That’s their choice too.

Customer first philosopyTSB Bank has been rated highest for customer satisfaction in the banking category over and over again. Most recenty they were awarded Canstar Blue’s 2013 ‘Most Satisfied Customers in Banking’ award which questions Kiwis on their satisfaction with their Bank across seven categories. It’s hardly surprising when you consider their amazing customer service record. So what’s their secret?

TSB Bank’s Managing Director/CEO Kevin Murphy says:

“We are guided by one key thought: what would we expect if we were the customer?”

Strong financial performanceTSB Bank has just reported an impressive 10.6% increase in pre-tax profit for the last financial year. Their Capital Adequacy Ratio (an industry measure of financial strength), at 14.56% continues to be one of the strongest of all banks in New Zealand.

Kevin says “We’re totally New Zealand owned and all of our funding is obtained from within New Zealand – we rely wholly on the deposit support of our customers.”

Convenient banking Wherever you are in New Zealand, or the world, banking with TSB Bank is easy. There’s an office right here in Nelson, on the corner of Bridge and Trafalgar Streets.

If you can’t make it to TSB Bank’s offices, HomeBank is their Internet, phone and text banking service – you can access your accounts, make payments, review transactions and transfer money.

[my]bank2, the Bank’s mobile banking

app, lets you open, close and even personalise how your accounts look.

You can also sort your day to day needs through the TSB Bank Direct call centre. Their friendly staff can answer all your queries in person Monday to Friday, 8.30am until 7pm. They’re so helpful in fact, they won the 2010 CRM Contact Centre Award.

Fees? What fees?TSB Bank have a philosophy of low or no fees. There are no cheque, EFTPOS or bank owned ATM* fees, on any of their accounts. So how exactly do TSB Bank make their money? The old-fashioned way – they earn it.

Where does your money go?TSB Bank’s investment strategy has always been somewhat conservative, and largely home loan focused. As Kevin Murphy explains:“Most of our investments, up to 70% of our assets in fact, go into providing home loans for everyday New Zealand families. This has been our investment mainstay for over 100 years now, and it will continue to be so.”

Full range of accounts on offerTSB Bank offers a rewarding range of personal cheque, transactional, savings and investment accounts. Whatever you want to do with your savings, TSB Bank has an option to suit.

Taking care of all your banking needsIt’s not just savings that TSB Bank does well. If you’re in the market for a home loan, TSB Bank takes a flexible approach - you can mix and match from a range of options to suit your finances and lifestyle.

Bank’s customer first focus brings better banking to Nelson

Nelson College for Girls 9A played exceptional netball in their Collegiate 1 game against Waimea College 9B at Saxton Courts on Saturday.Indications were the game could be expected to be tight with Waimea winning the first encounter of the season by two and Nelson taking the second game by five. The blue team hit the ground run-ning and were firing on all cylinders as they had great flow through court to feed their tall timber in the form of goal shoot, Tali Uia. Nelson played an impressive attacking game with some nice straight line play with Caroline Schurrman providing the pivotal link through court to be in front 16-7 at the major break. Nelson coach, Shar Lowe said she was more than happy with her girls – particularly with Tali who had been “converted” from a goal keep this season. Tali returned the astonishing statistics of converting all 23 of her team’s goals, missing only three for an average of 88 per cent. Goal defence Tui Kinita also came in for praise as she picked up a number of well timed intercepts in the 23-15 win.Premier grade preview: The final round will begin with a top of the table game between Jacks OPD and Waimea College. Both are assured a top three finish however the winner will take the direct route to the champi-onship final. Jacks are hitting their straps with a resounding 73-43 win over Richmond on Sumday.

Both teams have strength through the court and on their bench. The game will be well worth a trip to the Alison McAlpine Health & Fitness Centre. At 7pm Richmond will play Prices Black and on present form Richmond should take maximum points however one can never discount Prices depending on the personnel available. A win will give Richmond a semi final berth, however a loss without a bonus point will mean a nervous wait for the result of the final game between Stoke NBS and Prices Pharmacy A.Prices have bragging rights with two wins this sea-son however Stoke NBS are keen to turn the tables. On paper, Stoke’s offensive record should get them over the line however they are guilty of let-ting too many goals in at the defensive end so it would be fair to say the outcome is literally up in the air! There are a whole lot of “ifs” – if Richmond lose they need Stoke to beat Prices as they will go through to the semi final on a superior goal dif-ferential. For Prices A to make the semi they must rely on their clubmates to defeat Richmond and then beat Stoke themselves.

Off road is where it’s at, that’s the opinion of 249 trail runners and walkers who have entered this Saturday’s Haven Realty Sanctuary Run.Last year 116 turned up, but over double that and more will get their taste of Nelson’s ‘back-woods and beyond’ territory that will more than challenge some, especially over the 25km (long) course.Ninety travel from outside the region, a healthy response to a Nelson Events marketing and pro-motion initiative assisted by the Nelson City Council and it’s Nelson Events Marketing and Development Programme which was set up to encourage visitors to travel here in the shoulder and winter period. Before all get to foot it into the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary confines the course takes them along Codgers Track and up the Dun Mountain ‘Rail Trail’. At Four Corners those in the long course will head skywards to Fringed Hill and through to Third House via Black Diamond Ridge. From there they descend to complete their testing circuit in the Waterworks Reserve, created back in 1865 to serve the increasing water needs of the city. The short (14km) coursers are spared the stretch to Nelson’s skyline and instead are first to hear the ever increasing birdsong returning to our hinter-land, helped by the sanctuary trust’s volunteers and pest eradication programme. Both events will start at the OK Corral in Brook Street with registration, gear checks etc. com-mencing at 7.30am. The first finishers in the short course are expected at the Sanctuary finish line at approximately 10.00am with the leaders of the long course reaching ‘home’ just over an hour later.
