Anytime for emergencies. Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a mes- sage of calm. "Peace be with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the begin- ning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nos- trils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the longawaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant. In the pairing of these two readingsthe Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an in- dwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?

CATHOLIC CHARITIES SECOND APPEAL! This weekend we will participate in an important Fol-

lowUp Appeal for Catholic Charities. This is not a spe-

cial collection; rather it is a chance for all Catholics to

make a commitment to transform lives and communities

by sharing with others the gifts which God has given you.

Double your impact! All new, increased and additional

gifts returned in the InPew envelopes this weekend or

online at www.CatholicCommunity.org/Challenge will be

matched up to $100,000. Please check out this weekend’s

bulletin insert for more information.!

Dear Parishioners, !We celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost this weekend which marks the official ending of the Easter Season. The Greek word for Pentecost means “fiftieth,” and in early Christianity it referred to the entire fifty days of Easter. The roots of Pentecost can be found in the Jewish festival of Weeks (also known as Shavuot), the fiftyday celebration following Passover (Exodus 23:16). In Jew-ish tradition, Pentecost was a harvest festival in which the first fruits were offered to God in gratitude for God’s blessings. Over time, this feast became associated with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. Early Christians reinterpreted the Jewish festival as a commemoration of the coming of the Holy Spirit, since the Acts of the Apos-tles records that the Holy Spirit came to the disciples when the festival of Pentecost was fulfilled (Acts 2:111). The liturgical color for this feast is red, the color of the Holy Spirit (think tongues of fire!).!!

The survey regarding Mass times at Saint Mary and Our Lady of Hope will be in the pews and by the church doors again this weekend. All registered parishioners should fill out a survey and place it in the survey box in each vestibule or bring it to the office no later than Mon-day, May 21st. If you don’t know whether you are a reg-istered parishioner, please either call the office or put your telephone number and address on the parish survey so we can contact you if you aren’t a parishioner. We should have the results of this survey by the weekend of June 3rd. On Monday, May 21st, I will be traveling to Columbus to see my brother’s family and my mother who will be visiting from Illinois. My mom will proba-bly be moving to Columbus later this year. I will then drive my mom back to Illinois, and I will also visit my dad. I will be back for Masses on Memorial Day Week-end. !!

Have a blessed week. !Father Joe!

Farewell to Julie Barchanowicz, !Secretary of Saint Mary Parish!

! Julie Barchanowicz has been the secretary of Saint Mary Parish for the last 3.5 years. After much discern-ment, she has decided to leave her positon as secretary to pursue other interests. Her last day will be May 31st. Many parishioners at Our Lady of Hope have gotten to know her over the years when she comes to Mass and OLH events. The friendships that she has forged will not end as she plans on continued involvement in the Catholic Community of Bedford. There will be a farewell recep-tion after the 4:30pm Vigil Mass at Saint Mary on Satur-day, May 26th. If you are able, please stop by to wish her well on all her future endeavors. !Peace, Father Joe!
