The landscapes of the Comunidad de Madrid

Natural landscapes

The Comunidad de Madrid has got a number of ecologicallyimportant areas because of their natural landscape, animal life, plant life and other characteristics.

Mountain landscapes.

–  Alpine grasslands. We find this landscape in high mountainareas. It consists mostly of grasslands and shrublands.

– Mountain pine forest. There are natural Scots pine forests onthe slopes of mountains.

– Deciduous oak, ash and beech forests. We find these forests infoothills and on the lower slopes of mountains.

Riparian forests. These forests grow near rivers and onfloodplains. The trees in these forests include willows, poplars andash trees.

Mediterranean forests. These forests contain mostly holm oak trees. They predominate in flat plains and also form woodedpasturelands, or dehesas , in areas like the Cofio and Albercheriver valleys.

Humanized landscapes

We can find several types of humanized landscape in theComunidad de Madrid:

Rural landscapes. These consist of towns found in two areas:

– There are towns in the Sierra Norte with less populationbecause of their proximity to the mountains.

– There are towns in the southeast, in the plains and valleys ofthe Rivers Tajo, Tajuña and Jarama. These areas are mostlydedicated to agriculture.

Urban landscapes. These landscapes include the following areas:

– Madrid, where we find the main political and economicinstitutions.

– The metropolitan area, which surrounds the city and includesvarious municipalities. Nowadays, many companies are foundin this area, in both industrial estates and technology parks.

– Areas of recent urban expansion, which have grown aroundmotorways, such as Valdemoro and Collado-Villalba.
