    The traditions are breaking down.

The line between Druid and Wizard, between Summoner and Cleric, Bard and Witch andSorcerer has blurred, wiped away like dust on achalkboard. With the old divisions of magic lost andforgotten all that’s left is the power, the power tosummon demons, to heal the injured, to stop time orburn down a skyscraper with little more than athought, a word and a strange gesture.

The Modern Spellcaster is a new basic classfor D20 Modern, which draws heavily from thePathfinder Roleplaying Game’s much moreexpansive magic system. The Modern Spellcasterprovides a way for D20 Modern characters to castany spell in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, up toand including world-shattering ninth level spells!

The Modern Spellcaster is different thanmost D20 Modern Basic Classes- the class has notalents. Instead, the Modern Spellcaster has spells.Lots and lots of cool spells- why bother to learn tosneak around when you can just divine the truth of amatter with some tea leaves and expended mysticenergy? Why learn to fight when you can just blastsomebody with a magic missile or three, or justsummon a golem to beat your enemies to a pulp? The lack of talents marks Modern Spellcasters assomehow different than the regular, workadayworld, a product of a different time, a differentethos. However, the Modern Spellcaster has apretty useful class skill list and decent amount of skillpoints, reflecting their nature as eccentric, welleducated (if self taught) geniuses.

The Modern Spellcaster also makes a greatalternative spellcasting class for PathfinderRoleplaying Game campaigns. It is even more

  • 33333spontaneous than a Sorcerer, and uses a SpellPoint mechanic, which might make the class morepalatable to gamers coming to the PFRPG from aconsole games or non D&D background.Younger and less experienced gamers might findthe Modern Spellcaster more to their liking thanthe more ‘specialized’ spellcasting classes.

The Modern Spellcaster lacks the moreexotic features of the other spellcasting classes-by default, the Modern Spellcaster can’twildshape like a Druid, summon an Eidolon, access Clerical domains or wield channeledenergy, or do anything else. However the ModernSpellcaster can cast spells- lots and lots of spells. The Modern Spellcaster has access to everysingle spell in the game, and has the freedom tocast very high level spells even as a first levelrookie, though doing so carries a major risk to thecharacter. Customization and freedom are theModern Spellcaster’s biggest and moreimpressive advantages.

The following section briefly describeshow the Modern Spellcaster would be integratedinto Otherverse Games’ four D20 Moderncampaign worlds, three of which are distinctlynon-magical by default.

In Black TokyoIn Black TokyoIn Black TokyoIn Black TokyoIn Black TokyoThe Modern Spellcaster was created with

Black Tokyo in mind! I needed a decent modernspellcasting option that offers full 9th level casting(not the nerfed 5th level casting of D20 Modern) forthe upcoming second edition of the Black Tokyocampaign world, and the Modern Spellcaster fillsthat need. Expect this class to be referred to often inthe revised Black Tokyo.

In the world of Black Tokyo, magic iseverywhere, but it is a shadow thing, somethingglimpsed out of the corner of the eye. The ordinary

people of Black Japan might see an oni prowlingalong a trash strewn, neon-lit alleyway, or catch afleeting glimpse of a dragon’s shadow as it soarshigh over the Tokyo streets. When the citizens ofBlack Japan have a problem with gaki or oni, or ifthey are willing to pay the yen for a Coinless Cardor Maiden’s Kimono, there is a whisper network ofreferrals and ‘friend of a friend of a cousin of mine’that will lead them, sooner or later, into the hands ofa Modern Spellcaster.

Modern Spellcasters don’t fit into modernJapan; they cling to its shadows or to their owndreams. Modern Spellcasters are very rarely

  • 44444corporate drones; insteadthey are likely to be cute, traditionalist temple mikowho have kept to the oldways, shut-in otaku whohave somehow mastered afew mystical secrets fromstolen spellbooks, crazyassed old hermits, orsuperstition haunted recentimmigrants from theTatakama. In short, not themost stable of folks. TheJapanese Self Defense Forceand Chrysanthemum Seven(among other factions) keepa few Modern Spellcasterson staff as occult experts anddemon-hunters, but theirwages can’t begin tocompare to what a ModernSpellcaster could makeworking for vile powers likethe Amakaze.

Quite a few modernspellcasting traditions andmages’ academies have beenfounded in Black Japan. TheClovers Academy,Monster’s University and theHanging Academy all teachtheir young students magic ina classroom setting. TheClovers Academy focuseson general magical studies, with an emphasis on transmutation and some decenthealing classes. The Monster’s University focuses onsummoning, strength enhancing and savage combatmagic, while the Hanging Academy’s all-girl studentbody emphasizes necromancy and divination.

Note that all the gory, perverted spells foundin Spells and Gods of the Tatakama (OtherverseGames, 2012) are as common in Black Japan asthey are in the Tatakama themselves.

In Galaxy CommandIn Galaxy CommandIn Galaxy CommandIn Galaxy CommandIn Galaxy CommandModern Spellcaster levels are rarely the

province of human heroes. Instead, these mysterioustalents represent secrets taught only by weird alienmentors hiding out on distant worlds. Human heroeswho become Modern Spellcasters probably hadalien mentors, and are somewhat uncomfortable inthe ‘modern’ 35th Century. They dream of longvanished races, ancient secrets and faiths andpowers long forgotten by the cosmos.

  • 55555In keeping with the less violent nature of the

setting, most of Galaxy Command’s ModernSpellcasters focus on spells that offer enhancedsensory capabilities, travel options like flight orspiderclimb, ability buffs, and defensive magic. While high level combat magic exists, it is usually theprovince of WARSTAR or Space Mafia villains.Heroes usually keep their magical damage dealingoptions slightly below their defense capabilities, favoring low level offensive spells like Magic Missilerather than high level city-killers like MeteorSwarm.

Star Droids and other robotic characterscannot become Modern Spellcasters unless theyselect the True Souled racial trait described inSynthetic Heroes (Otherverse Games, 2011).

In Otherverse AmericaIn Otherverse AmericaIn Otherverse AmericaIn Otherverse AmericaIn Otherverse AmericaModern Spellcasters are treated as living

WMDS, and even the youngest and leastexperienced Modern Spellcaster is kept under highsecurity by her faction. The Modern Spellcasterclass is a relatively new development, onlycoalescing in the wake of War’s End. ModernSpellcasters are a dramatic refinement of earlierObject Philosophy thought tech, which are a set ofhighly specialized feats that grant near-magicalabilities in accordance with the user’s beliefs.

Very few high level Modern Spellcastersexist, and their impressive abilities are at least equalto capstone level Lifechained feats, high HDLifespawn, or high level Powered Heroes. However,Modern Spellcasters have an even greater versatilityand range of effect. Think about it. Once the firstModern Spellcaster, on either side, learns to cast aWish spell, even if it cooks her, the Abortion War isOVER. “I wish that everyone who fought in theChoicer/Lifer military during the War spontaneouslycombusts.” And there are plenty of characters, onboth sides, who have the disposition necessary topull the trigger on a Wish like that.

Each faction will make it an intelligencepriority to keep tabs on rival Modern Spellcasters, targeting high level Modern Spellcasters for

assassination before they crack the secrets of 7thlevel spells or above. Likewise, each faction willrush its own Modern Spellcasters through training tocatch up to a rival spellcaster.

You might want to reskin the ModernSpellcaster’s abilities as psionic rather than magicalin nature. This changes nothing about the charactermechanically, nor how her powers work, merelygiving a Modern Spellcaster in this setting thePsionic subtype at first level.

    In Psi-WatchIn Psi-WatchIn Psi-WatchIn Psi-WatchIn Psi-WatchThe Nineties Comics that inspired Psi-

Watch included a distinct minority of spellcastersand mystical heroes among their cyborgs, psychicmercenaries and charismatic mutants: Spawn,Witchblade, Hellshock, Shadowman and dozensmore are good examples. Modern Spellcasters canbe fit into the Psi-Watch world ‘behind the scenes’.The general public has no idea that magic exists, andeven most special ops teams have neverencountered a spellcaster.

Modern Spellcasters are elite operatives, given the absolute highest security clearancespossible. They are effectively above the law, and cancommand the obedience of most black operators, either by rank or through mind-warping spells.Modern Spellcasters go in and carry out missionsthat even whole fireteams couldn’t accomplish, andoften use their powers to sanitize a mission. Usingtheir spells, they assassinate heads of state withuntraceable strokes, use a faked gas line explosionto burn out a skyscraper, or use fate-warping magicto bring down a jetliner to get a single hard target. You’ve seen the handiwork of elite ModernSpellcaster spies on the news, but you’ve neverrealized what you’ve seen….

By contrast, both the Blooded Ghosts andthe Culture use magic openly, their populations bothaccepting sorcery as every bit a valid a path asscience. Blooded Ghost shamans favor spells thatsummon, deform or draw blood, or spells that healtheir own races’ hurts. Culture Modern Spellcastersfavor spells that force obedience, rearrange matterto their whims or enhance the already impressivetalents of Culture soldiers.

Class SkillsClass SkillsClass SkillsClass SkillsClass SkillsThe Modern Spellcaster’s class skills are as follows.

Bluff (CHA), Computer Use (INT),Concentration (CON), Craft (electronic, visual arts, writing) (INT), Decipher Script (INT), Diplomacy(CHA), Forgery (INT), Gamble (WIS), GatherInformation (CHA), Investigate (WIS), Knowledge(any skill) (INT), Listen (WIS), Perform (any skill)(CHA), Profession (any occult, white collar oracademic) (WIS), Research (INT), Sense Motive(WIS), Spot (WIS), Speak/Read Languages

In PFRPG campaigns, just use Linguisticsinstead of Decipher Script, Forgery and Speak/Read Languages, Spellcraft instead ofConcentration, and Perception instead of Spot andListen. Otherwise everything works fine as written.

Spell PointsSpell PointsSpell PointsSpell PointsSpell PointsBeginning at first level, the Modern

Spellcaster begins accumulating Spell Points. To casta spell, the Modern Spellcaster must expend SpellPoints equal to the spell’s level. Thus, to cast fireball,a 3rd level spell, a Modern Spellcaster would expendthree Spell Points. If the spell is modified byMetamagic feats, the Modern Spellcaster must paySpell Points equal to the spell’s modified level. Thus,if that fireball is Enlarged, the Modern Spellcasterwould pay the modified level cost, or four SpellPoints.

At first level, the Modern Spellcasterreceives Four (4) Spell Points, plus a number ofadditional Spell Points equal to his or her INTbonus. A few starting talents and feats increase theModern Spellcaster’s Spell Point total.

Just based upon the Spell Points providedby the class itself, discounting an INT bonus or featto boost the Spell Point maximum, at 10th level theModern Spellcaster would have 38 Spell Points, and a whopping 123 Spell Points at 20th level!

Armored Spell Failure?Armored Spell Failure?Armored Spell Failure?Armored Spell Failure?Armored Spell Failure?Modern Spellcasters cast spells just like any

other spellcaster. Modern Spellcasters suffer anarcane spell failure chance. One exception to this isLight armor of the Concealable type; these ultralightmodern forms of body armor are designed forcomfort and ease of wear. Modern Spellcasters donot suffer an arcane spell chance when wearing anytype of Light, Concealable body armor.

Note that this might not completely restorethe Modern Spellcaster’s casting capacity if she runsher pool of magical energy down to zero. A fewtalents and feats allow Modern Spellcasters torecover Spell Points at a greater rate or in a differentmanner; these abilities are discussed later in thisPDF.

Action Points & Spell RecoveryAction Points & Spell RecoveryAction Points & Spell RecoveryAction Points & Spell RecoveryAction Points & Spell RecoveryThe Modern Spellcaster can expend an

action point, as a full round action. Doing so allowsher to focus her will and immediately recover 1d6+1Spell Points, up to her maximum. At 10th level, sherecovers 2d6+2 Spell Points.

SpellsSpellsSpellsSpellsSpellsThe Modern Spellcaster uses her INT

modifier to determine bonus Spell Points, and herINT modifier is used to calculate the Save DC of allher spells. The Modern Spellcaster can acquire andcast any spell, from any class list, including botharcane and divine spells!

The Modern Spellcaster can acquire anynumber of spells. Once a spell is learned, theModern Spellcaster can cast it at any time. TheModern Spellcaster must acquire a written or digitalcopy of a spell to learn it; from another mage’s spellbook or book of shadows, from an ancient scroll, ora spell stored on a PDA. Learning the spell requiresthe Modern Spellcaster to spend a number of hoursequal to the spell’s level minus her INT modifier(minimum one hour) studying the spell. At the end ofthis period, the Modern Spellcaster makes aSpellcraft check with a DC equal to 12 + the spell’slevel.

The Modern Spellcaster automaticallysucceeds when learning Zero level spells; she mustmerely expend an hour of study to add this minorspell to her collection.

If the check is successful, the ModernSpellcaster learns the new spell, and adds it to herrepertoire of spells known. Whether or not the spellis successfully learned, it is expended; the writtencopy of the spell either vanishes entirely, consumedin mystic flames, or becomes illegible, writing fading, data becoming corrupt and unreadable, mysticdiagrams shifting and changing into somethinguseless, and so forth.

A Note on Different Spell ListsA Note on Different Spell ListsA Note on Different Spell ListsA Note on Different Spell ListsA Note on Different Spell ListsIf a spell appears on the spell lists of differ-

ent PFRPG classes at different levels (example:Cleric 4, Wizard 5), the Modern Spellcaster gainsthat spell as a spell of the lowest possible level. Inthis example, that would mean the Cleric 4 spellwould become a 4th level spell for the ModernSpellcaster. All spells cast by the ModernSpellcaster are considered to be Arcane spells, regardless of their previous origin.

Safe Casting and OvercastingSafe Casting and OvercastingSafe Casting and OvercastingSafe Casting and OvercastingSafe Casting and OvercastingThe Modern Spellcaster can cast any spell

she desires, at any level, assuming she has enoughSpell Points to power the spell. In someextraordinary circumstances, a first level ModernSpellcaster might even try her luck at casting aneighth or ninth level spell! Possible….but not a verygood idea.

If the Modern Spellcaster attempts to cast aspell of a higher level than she can safely cast(overcasting), she risks potentially fatal backlash. Ifthe Modern Spellcaster makes the attempt, she mustsucceed at a WILL Save, with a DC equal to 15 +the spell’s level. If the Modern Spellcaster makesher save, she casts the higher level spell withoutincident. The Modern Spellcaster casts higher levelspells as if she were a spellcaster of the minimumlevel required to cast the spell.

If she fails her save, then things getinteresting. On a failed save, the Modern Spellcastersuffers 1D10 points of damage per level of theovercast spell. If the Modern Spellcaster fails hersave by five points or worse, in addition to this

  • 99999

damage, she suffers an additional point of damagefor every Spell Point remaining in her pool, expending all these Spell Points (and probablycooking herself from the inside out). In either case, the overcast spell is not cast.

CantripsCantripsCantripsCantripsCantripsEach day, upon recovering spent Spell

Points, the Modern Spellcaster can designate whichzero level spells (called cantrips) she wishes toemphasize that day. The Modern Spellcaster canselect a number of zero level spells equal to 3 + herINT modifier. She can cast these specific zero level

spells as many times as desired that day, without expending Spell Points. If shechooses to modify one of these cantripswith a Metamagic feat, she would spendSpell Points equal to the cantrip’s totalmodified level.

If the Modern Spellcaster wishes tocast a zero level spell beyond thedesignated cantrips, she must expend one(1) Spell Point to do so.

Starting Spells KnownStarting Spells KnownStarting Spells KnownStarting Spells KnownStarting Spells KnownA first level Modern Spellcaster has

somehow acquired a few spells when thecampaign begins.

The Modern Spellcaster beginswith as many cantrips as the gamemasterallows, which is a number equal to theSpellcaster’s INT score at a minimum. Most campaigns will allow the ModernSpellcaster to begin with every zero levelspell in the core rulebook.

The Modern Spellcaster begins witha number of first level spells known equalto her INT modifier, or three (3)whichever is greater.

For the rest of the ModernSpellcaster’s starting spell allotment, roll

randomly on the following chart. Your gamemasterwill tell you what type of campaign you’re running in,which determines what kind of spells you can rollfor. Note that even the lowest power campaignoffers the Modern Spellcaster a chance, albeit asmall one, to start with a 9th level spell. The constanttemptation to cast recklessly, and the risk ofspectacular self immolation, are a big part of thisclass’ mystique.

The Modern Spellcaster can sacrifice thechance to receive any spells of a particular level inorder to receive a +10% bonus on the random rollto determine any spells of the next higher spell level.

Instead of casting spells in person, theModern Spellcaster can instead transmit a spellelectronically. The digital spell takes the form of amystically trapped e-mail message that activateswhen the recipient opens the file.

Prerequisite: Modern Spellcaster levels,Computer Use 5 ranks

Benefit: You can create spells in digitalform, which can be e-mailed, tweeted or sent viatext message, ect. You can create a digital version ofany spell you can safely cast.

Creating a digital spell requires a ComputerUse check (DC 20 + the spell’s level), and at leasttwo hours of work per spell level. First, the magemust successfully store the spell or spell he wishes toattach to the email message. A digital spell must bespecifically targeted at a specific character; the spelldoes not function if any other person opens the e-mail before the intended recipient.

The Modern Spellcaster can collectmundane information about the target by successfulResearch, Gather Information or Computer Usechecks. The more information the Digital Sorcerercan gather, the more effective the digital spellbecomes. Each of the following bits of informationincreases the Virtual Hex’s saving throw DC by +1

    • The Modern Spellcaster has access to thevictim’s online blog, website or similar.

    • The Modern Spellcaster has a recent (within2 weeks) digital photo of the victim.

    • The Modern Spellcaster knows the target’ssocial security number, date of birth, andcredit information.

    • The Modern Spellcaster knows some of thethe victim’s passwords or access codes.

The virtual hex takes effect when the victimopens the trapped e-mail message. If the spell offersa saving throw, the victim saves against the spell atthis point. The victim may attempt to recognize thevirtual hex for the deadly threat that it is by making asuccessful Computer Use (DC 25 + spell level) orKnowledge (arcane lore) or Spell Craft (DC 15 +spell level). If the victim recognizes the email is

trapped, he can simply delete the message withoutopening it or allow someone else to open it,expending the magic. The digital spell remainsfunctional for a number of days equal to the ModernSpellcaster’s INT modifier. If not accessed beforethis time, it degrades into useless data.
