Slots 1-14 are for hot-pluggable service boards.
Slots 1 and 2, slots 3 and 5, slots 4 and 6, slots 7 and 9, slots 8 and 10, slots 11 and 13, and slots 12 and 14 are
slot pairs.
Slots 15 and 20 are for system control, switching, and timing boards.
Slots 26 and 27 are for PIU boards that provide 1+1 hot backup for each other.

Typical Application of RTN 980s - TDMApplication 1: TDM services from BSs are converged and then transmitted to an optical transmission network.
This application pertains to the backhaul of TDM services from BSs. The services from BSs are converged on an RTN 980 on a chain, tree, or ring network. If an NE needs to transmit 16xE1 services, 1+1 HSB protection must be configured for the NE. In addition, this NE provides STM-1/STM-4 optical interfaces in the upstream direction, which is configured into a 1+1 MSP group. RTN 980s connect to a backbone network, and is configured into a ring MSP group with OptiX OSN equipment.Note: 2.5 Gbit/s optical interfaces are not supported in the R3C00 version.

Convergence of multiple types of IF boards
On the access side, TDM and Ethernet services are transmitted to one site and are converged on Hybrid IF boards on the RTN 980. Then, the services are transmitted to optical transmission networks. Specifically, TDM services are transmitted on an SDH network; Ethernet services are transmitted on a GE network.
Application 2: Hybrid services from 2G/3G BSs are converged and then transmitted to an optical transmission network.

Typical Application of RTN 980s - Packet
The RTN 910 receives Packet services from the BS, and the RTN 950 or RTN 980 converges services. The services from the RTN 950 are transmitted to the PTN 3900 through a GE access ring. The RTN 980 converges services from eight microwave directions or more. The RTN 980 provides two GE ports in the upstream direction to connect to the PTN 3900. In this way, microwave equipment and other optical network equipment can be integrated as one. In addition, Nodal microwave equipment instead of stacked devices can be used to receive services from multiple microwave directions.

The CSHN board is the system control, switching, and timing board,
providing 2xSTM-1/2xSTM-4 ports and 2xGE ports.
• Functions and FeaturesSupports 2xSTM-1/2xSTM-4 ports and 2xGE ports, and 14 service slots.
Supports a packet switching capability of 22 Gbit/s.
Supports the TDM switching function, that is, 128x128 VC-4 cross-connections and
lower order cross-connections equivalent to 32x32 VC-4 cross-connections.
Supports one NMS serial port/network port, one NE cascading port for network
management communication, as well as NE management and query.
Provides one external clock port (2048 kbit/s or 2048 kHz, wayside E1 port)

Configuration Principles
CSHN boards are a must for an OptiX RTN 980. If an OptiX RTN 980 needs one CSHN board, install the board in slot 15; if an OptiX RTN 980 needs two CSHN boards, install the boards in slots 15 and 20.

Typical Application of STM-1/STM-4 Compatible Optical Interfaces 1. RTN 980s can be networked with fiber-optic equipment. That is, RTN 980s
can be networked with MSTP equipment to form an STM-4 ring, or can be
networked with MSTP equipment to form an STM-1 ring.
2. If there are two system control, switching, and timing boards, the boards
cannot be configured into STM-1 linear MSP with extended boards.

The ISU2 board is a universal IF board used on the RTN
910/950/980. It provides one IF port for integrated IP microwave.

Introduction to the ML1/MD1 Board
The MD1 board transmits and receives a maximum of 32xE1 signals, and the ML1 board transmits and
receives a maximum of 16xE1 signals. The board supports 75-ohm E1 coaxial cables and 120-ohm E1
twisted pair cables to perform conversion between PDH services and packets (cells). The service types
at each port are agile to process CES and IMA signals. The board supports hot swap.
•Functions IMA:
• The MD1 board supports 32 IMA groups. Each IMA group has a maximum of 16 members. The ML1 board supports 16 IMA groups. Each IMA group has a maximum of 16 members.
• Supports the Fractional mode.
ATM:• The MD1 board supports 512 ATM remote connections. The ML1 board supports 256 ATM
remote connections.• Supports ATM PWE3.• Supports Fractional ATM.
CES:• The ML1 board supports 16xE1 signals, and the MD1 board supports 2x16 E1 signals.• Supports CESoPSN and SAToP.• Supports Fractional CES.

The service bus on backplane communicates signals between the two Ethernet GE ports and the
main and standby boards on the RTN 910, RTN 950, and RTN 980.
