Riverlands man Mark Stead, whose custom-built green pickup truck recently won an award at the CRC Speedshow in Auckland.

Mark, a member of local hot rod club Sun Valley Roadsters and owner of Big Shed Customs, said he worked tirelessly on the vehicle, with the help of colleagues Vaughan Hall and Steve Mitchell, and David Clark at Wadsco Commercial.

first-time councillor Terry Sloan.“And the Mayor gives me a bit of a hard

time about it. It’s tongue in cheek though – I just tell him to look at my campaign material. Not a tie anywhere.”

Terry, the owner of the Criterion Hotel, is at 41 the second youngest of the batch of eight new councillors and has loved the experience. “It was a massive learning curve though. And there’s plenty more still to learn.”

The early days where conflict emerged were, he said “very interesting”.

“I didn’t know if that was normal or not.“But I think conflict is healthy. It made

people ask a lot of questions.”The Sheard report, coming after allegations

of corruption were made, allowed everyone to “have their whinge, to get out their conspiracy theories” he said.

“It helped clear the air.”Now he has worked alongside staff and other

councillors, he realised it ran to the letter of the law, he said. “I’d back anyone on that.”

The Kiwi accent belies his origins – Terry was born in Belfast, so an Irish pub is not a long shot as a career. “But I came here when I was eighteen months old, so I’m almost a local.”

His father was a well known school teacher

at St Mary’s for eighteen years and the family has its fair share of teachers, but he was never tempted by a career in education.

“I did a carpentry apprenticeship, then had my own building and concreting businesses before we took over the Criterion. I was only 31 when we did that, and our children were one, two and three, which tells you about how supportive my wife is.”

In his first year, the business did suffer though. “I couldn’t get enough of council.”

“I had to take a look at things. I realised it was time management.

The former representative sports-man says much council work is about teamwork. “Not every decision goes your way. You just suck it up and back the team.”

He said a couple of councillors had found that difficult. “That’s their right and choice. But it’s not my style.”

Terry highly respects Mayor Alastair Sowman as a leader.

“You won’t find a person more passionate about the position. He puts so much time and effort into it.”

No surprises then to the inevitable question about standing for the mayoralty:

“Now isn’t the time. Quite a few have approached me though.

“Perhaps next time. Provided I get through this round...” Sitting MDC councillor Terry Sloan.

Nominations for the Marlborough District Council elections close at noon on Friday August 16 at 5pm.

The postal voting documents with candidates’ names will be delivered to ratepayers’ homes between September 20-25. Voting can start on the 20th and runs until noon on Saturday October 12.

New Zealand Red Cross is warn-ing the public to be on the lookout for a fake email asking people to donate to Syria.

The email uses the heading “Do-nate to the emergency appeal for Syria”, and uses text identical to that on the New Zealand Red Cross website Syria appeal page.

The email contains a link for people to follow, and most spam filters will block access to this link. However people should not click on the link as the email is not genuine.

New Zealand Red Cross fundrais-ing manager Alice Montague says Red Cross does not send unsolicited emails to members of the public, and also does not ask for people’s bank account numbers by email.

earthquakes have relocated to Blenheim thanks to a Housing New Zealand incentive scheme.

The tenants were among 350 on the Christch-urch state housing waiting list in the wait for 5000 quake-damaged properties to be repaired.

The incentive scheme, which offers rental rebates to those willing to relocate to parts of New Zealand where housing is available, has seen five families move out of caravans, sheds or backpackers and into Blenheim homes. One woman has also relocated to Picton.

“By offering prospective tenants the op-portunity to relocate to another area, we are giving them the chance to get into a warm, dry house really quickly rather than have an indefinite wait for a property in Christchurch,” Housing NZ regional manager for the south island Symon Leggett said.

“It is important to note that we are very care-ful to match prospective tenants to housing that will best suit their needs.

“For example this includes bedroom num-bers, size of the house, as well as whether the location is going to be suitable for them.”

As well as repairing damaged properties, Housing New Zealand is building up to 700 new houses over the next two and a half years, but that doesn’t help the current situa-tion, described as "dire" by area manager for Marlborough Dale Bradley.

“We are trying to be open and honest with our tenants that it is going to be a long wait,” Mr Bradley said.

“Obviously many can’t or don’t want to

relocate, but for those who have been able to, it has been very positive.

“I mean, who wouldn’t want to live in Blenheim?” he laughed.

Quake victims find new homes in Blenheim

dale Bradley from housing new Zealand says his company has helped five Christchurch families find homes in Blenheim.

Marlborough and Seddon con-tinue to rock with more than a dozen earthquakes over 3.3- magnitude on Thursday.

GeoNet recorded a ''moderate'' 4.2-magnitude quake beneath Cook Strait at 5.46am on Thurs-

day at a depth of 25km, 20km east of Seddon.

Then at 11.10am a 4.9-magni-tude quake shook central New Zealand.

GeoNet categorised the earth-quake as "strong".

It was at a depth of 16km beneath the Cook Strait, 30km east of Seddon.

At 11.55am at the same spot an-other 4.2-magnitude aftershock at a depth of 18km.

No damage has been reported.

The earthquakes were felt in Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Kapiti Coast.

The Seddon area has been continually rocked by after-shocks following the July 21st 6.5 earthquake.

with local business Top Town Cinemas to bring a mini-film festival to Blenheim to promote the launch of ticket sales for the 2013 event.

The festival, the twentieth to be held, will screen from August 5-9.

Jeremy Jones, President of Nelmac Garden Marlborough, said the films would appeal to a wide range of viewers.

Screenings will commence at 7pm with a complimentary glass of wine on arrival, and on some nights, ticket holders will enjoy one of the college jazz bands in town for Southern Jam.

A pataka is a Maori hut raised on poles which was used to keep preserved food and treasures.

It was with this vision in mind that Nina Huria-Bryce created her new gourmet food store, Pataka – The Foodstore, near Blenheim.

Pataka offers gourmet share and platter-style foods, such as sauces, jams, dukkah, crackers, lavash, nuts and cheeses. Soon the range will also include cured meats and pates.

Ms Huria-Bryce is a passion-ate foodie who studied food technology and went on to work in food sales in New Zealand and Australia. So she found it difficult to restrain herself when it came to sourcing her own product range.

“I’ve tried to select quality foods for platters and pre-din-ner appetisers, as well as wine related gifts and merchandise,” she said.

“All the foods are New Zea-land-made and we also have a cultural cuisine cluster featur-ing products that have a Maori name or feel, or are made from native ingredients.”

Pataka also offers coffee and Devonshire teas and the staff can put together gift hampers to suit individual style and tastes.

“We will also be doing cor-porate platters that people can

order and collect,” Ms Huria-Bryce said.

Anyone else had over sized power bills this winter compared to any other year in winter? My bill was over 600 and we are only home for dinner usually. Last winter was 800 for 2 months. This month its 600 for 3 weeks. Especially hard when you have a newborn baby. Rather then buying stuff for my baby I’m busy paying for power so she only has a few clothes. Its a shame tiny mighty. Dear Ed,I read a piece out of the paper that

will upset diabetic people. It seems the Govt have changed diabetic equipment in March to save $10 million. This effects 150,000 diabetic across the country those ones who have to test their blood glucose regularly.

Diabeties liasion officer said he had heard concerns about the new Korean made Care Sens meter from more than 100 people over the past few months. Making people suffer to save money just isn't good enough.

Frugal folly

Dear Ed,I was dismayed at the lack of

consideration of drivers when approaching a pedestrian crossing.

This has been discussed time and time again, but I feel I need to air my opinion!

I waited patiently with my young child in the cold weather at a High Street crossing and I watched as a total of seven cars looked at us but carried on driving.

Most of them were elderly driv-ers, who I thought would have been

more understanding!So finally a very kind courier

van driver stopped for me as my daughter and I crossed, I gave him a thumbs up and very nearly a mid-dle finger to the car approaching the opposite side who nearly run us over.

Have some consideration people. You are warm and comfortable in your cars while we are outside in the cold weather trying to safely cross with our children!

Maria Zydenbos is often described as being an "inspiration, amazing and motivational", but for this breast cancer survivor life is something to be lived and enjoyed to its fullest.

At the age of 75 years "young" Maria is very physically active, swimming 100 lengths three days a week, regularly biking long dis-tances and a very loyal member (and the oldest) of the Simply the Breast Marlborough Dragon Boat Team.

"I have 11 very fit grandchildren who I need to keep up with," she laughed.

Originally from Holland Maria has lived in New Zealand for 50 years, most of which has been in Blenheim.

She has been a member of this team for five years, joining a year after being diagnosed with a large cancerous lump in one of her breasts. She opted for a mastectomy.

Surviving breast cancer gave Maria the motivation to join the dragon boat team which she has since dedi-

cated herself as a paddler, fundraiser and source of spirited humour to the team.

Simply the Breast chairperson Coralie Holdaway said it was people like Maria who make dragon boating worthwhile.

"Seeing how motivated, positive and physical Maria is at her age is an inspiration to our other members.

"She has been so dedicated to the team, never missing a practice and is always doing good deeds for individual members, we all think she is just amazing," she said.

She also knits slippers and beanies and sells them to help the team.

"I love the company of the team, we have a lot of fun and I have no plans to retire from dragon boating... unless they kick me out," she joked.

Federated Farmers is applaud-ing, Stop Stock Theft, New Zealand’s first ever online map designed to report and track suspected stock theft. This joint initiative between Crimestop-pers NZ, NZX-Agri and the Police will be welcomed by all farmers.

“While shoplifting costs New Zealand some $730 million each year, stock theft is report-edly costing the country a further $120 million,” says Katie Milne, Federated Farmers rural security spokesperson.

“These are massive sums for red meat farmers who are struggling against a backdrop of the New Zealand dollar and difficult market conditions.

“Stock theft, also known as rustling, is a low blow because once you lose stock you cannot replace them. They are gone

and it robs your farm business of vital income.

“While the Police do take theft seriously the new website, ‘Stop Stock Theft,’ allows victims to report things anonymously. This is about building up intel-ligence on when and where the theft took place and what was taken.

has told the Sun the Marlborough Airport does not need 24-7 fire coverage in the wake of downsizing its fire service at Woodbourne.

As reported in Wednesday’s Sun, the airport’s fire service was re-cently downgraded from 24-7 to a Monday –Friday operation, meaning volunteer firefighters from Blenheim and Renwick will now respond to airport fires and aviation emergencies at night and on weekends.

“The RNZAF reviewed the pro-vision of Crash Fire Services at Woodbourne and determined that it can reduce the hours of service and still meet the necessary require-ments,” the RNZAF said in a written statement.

“The NZFS (New Zealand Fire Service) will respond to all after-hours airport emergencies. A duty RNZAF senior fire fighter will attend all fires at RNZAF Base Woodbourne.

“There is no requirement un-

der Civil Aviation Authority for Marlborough Airport to have 24/7 crash fire coverage.

“The number of f lights into Marlborough Airport does not meet the threshold for full time fire cover-age, as is the case for many airports of similar size around New Zealand.”

The RNZAF also denied staff had been laid off.

The move has drawn criticism from airport chief executive Dean Heiford who said he wasn’t happy with the reduction of service.

‘Airport doesn’t need 24-7 fire coverage’

Marlborough Roads is asking Blenheim motorists to observe the traffic signs around the demolition site of the old Po-dium Building on the corner of Market and Wynen Streets.

The demolition team will be at the site for approximately six weeks.

Changes to pedestr ian and traffic flows have been necessary to ensure public safety in the area while the work is going on, says Frank Porter, Highway Manager (Marlborough Roads.)

The one-way flow on Market Street remains unchanged but it is no longer possible to turn into Wynen Street from Market Street to access the Wynen Street carpark from this direction.

The section of Wynen Street between Market Street and the Wynen Street Car Park entrance has been reduced to one way only, enabling drivers to exit the car park and get back through Market Square.

Mr Porter said there may be some inconvenience in having this short section of Wynen Street reduced to one-way but it was the option that created

least disruption to traffic flow.“Most people realise that

both Market Street and Wynen Streets are very narrow and that our priority must be public

safety. However a few drivers seem to be deliberately and foolishly ignoring the signs which are there for the safety of everyone,” he said.

The cowbells will be clanking furiously when the Chiefs and the Brumbies contest the Super Rugby final in Hamilton tomorrow evening.

As far as I’m concerned, and per-haps since I come from Crusaders country it could be deemed sour grapes, but I think both teams can consider themselves as being fortu-nate to be in the final – extremely fortunate.

No doubt the old cliche will be trotted out. “Yes, but the Chiefs and the Brumbies took their chances and we didn’t take ours… etc, etc.”

To some extent it’s true, but two incidents have stuck in my mind during the past week; two incidents which shot the Chiefs and Brumb-

ies into the final.Firstly, let’s take the Bulls-

Brumbies semi-final in Pretoria: There are three minutes on the clock, your team leads narrowly; you have the ball, you could retain it, run down the clock to the final whistle. But Bulls first-five, Morne Steyn, has other ideas. What does he do?

He opts to kick the ball to the Brumbies who grab it like a pre-cious pearl.

It seems a no brainer that the opposition cannot score if they do not have the ball. Some-one needs to tell Steyn that. Anyway, probably not believing their luck, The Brumbies, having gained pos-session, end up scoring. The whistle

blows: Brumbies 26, Bulls 23. Exit the Bulls.

And now we come to the Chiefs-Crusaders match. Not having played the weekend before, the Chiefs appear fresher and display more vigour.

Notwithstanding this, the Crusad-ers exert control; Dan Carter is off with his kicking and in the end will make two ‘too-soon’ drop goal at-tempts but it is not this that rankles.

It is the action of the Crusaders centre Ryan Crotty. It’s in the second half; the Crusaders attack from near the centre of the field. Crotty has the ball; he cannot see the opposition; he has his back to them. But what does he do?

He flings out a wide pass meant

for lock Sam Whitelock which sails with the speed and trajectory of a slow, fat duck. It is plucked from the air by the little poacher himself, Aaron Cruden, who sprints unchallenged to score which, with the conversion, shoots the Chiefs out to an 11 point lead.

The Crusaders come back, but it’s not enough. Chiefs 20, Crusaders 19. Exit the Crusaders.

Highlighting these two incidents from tight, intense matches could be considered unfair but these guys are professional rugby players; too often this sort of poor play is shoved under the carpet and forgotten.

Losing is more palatable when the direct cause comes via an act of supreme skill, not the bungling

and family that hard work pays off after winning a number of medals and trophies at competitions in the past two weeks.

Tyler competed at the Top of the South Gymnastics Competition in Nelson two weeks ago and made the final eight last weekend at the Christchurch School of Gymnastics Classic Competition.

There she was joined by fellow Blenheim gymnasts Milly Burfoot and Isabel Cowlishaw in the Step Five level.

Tyler was the only Blenheim competitor who made it to Sunday’s final eight where she placed third in the overs and fifth overall out of 28 competitors.

In the Nelson event Tyler won four gold and one bronze

medals.The 12-year-old who is coached by Erica Ticehurst at

the Blenheim Gymnastics Club now has a total of 19 medals and one trophy since starting gymnastics over two years ago.

Practicing on her beam from home, Tyler was proud of her medal haul and said gymnastics was “my life”.

“She lives and breathes gymnastics,” said Tyler’s mother Lianne Budny.

With the top of the south competitions behind her, Tyler is now looking to the National competition set for October.

To enter Tyler must be accepted which she hopes to find out about in the near future.
