SMITH Selah Sound e Selah High School girls bowling team is getting pretty comfortable with the idea of competing at the state tourna- ment in University Place. For the second consecutive season, the Vikings captured a 3A/2A district championship securing them a spot at the state tournament conducted earlier this month. Aer beating Kennewick by 94 pins to win the district title, Selah made a trip to the state tournament and ended the com- petition in eighth place. Selah Head Coach William Foster said that since Selah was the only 2A school at the state meet, the nish was pretty im- pressive. ere were some pretty good teams there, stronger than some 4A teams. We were just happy to be able to get eighth,” Foster said. e Vikings ended the regular season with a 5-5 record, com- peting in a league that Foster called very steady. He added every team in the league was evenly matched and the last three Selah losses were aer 2-2 splits and the tie break- er going to total pin fall. “It’s been a pretty challenging season and we ended up being district champions when no one expected us to,” he said. In the district  victory, Selah was sparked by senior Taylor Jones who had a 524 series and  junior Emily Imbrey who ended with a 505 series. While the squad will return Imbrey as a top returner, Foster said the team is going to be very young and inexperienced. He is hoping that more bowl- ers turn out next season because the past few years the program has been graduating players and not getting much replacement. Foster said this could be be- cause there is no bowling center in Selah, or that many people consider bowling to not be a sport. To counter that idea Foster said that according to the Unit- ed States Bowling Congress, bowling is the most participated sport in the world. “I’m hoping to get some more out for the te am, ” he said. Foster added there is the potential for bowling to be a lifelong sport and there are college scholar- ship opportuni- ties available at the one of the roughly 160 colleges that have bowling as a varsity sport. He said he is currently work- ing with a former Viking bowler to help her get a scholarship at a school in Tennessee. Other members of the team included Kayla Peterson, Leala Mangano, Ceci Estela, Kaiti Dell, Allie Evans, Mikayla Bell, Sara McDowell, Ashley Baugh- man and Hannah Peters.
