e Selah High School girlsbowling team is getting pretty comfortable with the idea of competing at the state tourna-ment in University Place.
For the second consecutiveseason, the Vikings captured a
3A/2A district championshipsecuring them a spot at the statetournament conducted earlierthis month.
Aer beating Kennewick by 94 pins to win the district title,Selah made a trip to the statetournament and ended the com-petition in eighth place.
Selah Head Coach WilliamFoster said that since Selah wasthe only 2A school at the statemeet, the nish was pretty im-pressive.
“ere were some pretty goodteams there, stronger than some4A teams. We were just happy to be able to get eighth,” Fostersaid.
e Vikings ended the regularseason with a 5-5 record, com-
peting in a league that Fostercalled very steady.
He added every team in theleague was evenly matched andthe last three Selah losses wereaer 2-2 splits and the tie break-er going to total pin fall.
“It’s been a pretty challengingseason and we ended up beingdistrict champions when no one
expected us to,”he said.In the district
victory, Selahwas sparked by senior TaylorJones who hada 524 series and
junior Emily Imbrey who endedwith a 505 series.
While the squad will returnImbrey as a top returner, Fostersaid the team is going to be very young and inexperienced.
He is hoping that more bowl-ers turn out next season becausethe past few years the programhas been graduating players andnot getting much replacement.
Foster said this could be be-cause there is no bowling center
in Selah, or that many peopleconsider bowling to not be asport.
To counter that idea Fostersaid that according to the Unit-ed States Bowling Congress,bowling is the most participatedsport in the world.
“I’m hoping to get some moreout for the te am,” he said.
Foster addedthere is thepotential forbowling to bea lifelong sportand there arecollege scholar-ship opportuni-
ties available at the one of theroughly 160 colleges that havebowling as a varsity sport.
He said he is currently work-ing with a former Viking bowlerto help her get a scholarship at aschool in Tennessee.
Other members of the teamincluded Kayla Peterson, LealaMangano, Ceci Estela, KaitiDell, Allie Evans, Mikayla Bell,Sara McDowell, Ashley Baugh-man and Hannah Peters.
