Haskap orHoneyberries

by Christine

It has been proven that there are several health benefits for those who consume this berry. Haskap ber-ries are high in vitamin C and a great source of antioxidants. They need a pollinator to complete fruit produc-tion. You need one pollinator for 5 plants and they need to be close to one another. Appropriate pollinator varieties are required. This chart will make your decisions easier. All are available at Parkland Garden Center.

Haskap Berry Growing TipsHaskap grow best in well drained soil which is higher in high organic matter. They need lots of sunlight for optimum productivity. More than one cultivar is needed for good fruit production. These berries will look ripe 1-2 weeks before they are truly ready to be eaten. If the berries are green inside, they are not ripe; they should be a deep purple red inside when fully ripened.

The Symbol of Beauty and Love

by Christine

The Greeks and Romans linked the lily with the queen of the gods of women and marriage, called Hera by the Greeks and Juno by the Romans. The lily was also one of the symbols of the Roman goddess Venus who is the god-dess of beauty and love. Venus was jealous of the beauty of the lily and put pistils in the center of the flower so the lily would not be as beautiful as she.

Tiny Poems Lily the NEW 2016 Growing Colors Introduc-tion is pictured here. This must-have compact variety produces black centered blooms in a trumpet shaped flower with hot pink tips. The flowers are excellent for cutting in early summer and make an excellent mass border planting. They are about 14” tall and the spread is 12” and they produce 5 to 7 flowers per stem which makes them excellent for cut flow-ers. They require a well drained sunny location for optimal growth. These lilies are known to attract hummingbirds and are very fragrant.

Tiny Poems is a beautiful lily that is fragrant. Blooms late summer, likes full sun and average soil at 25-30cm tall and wide. It will not require staking.

2016: YEAR OF THE RAINBOW CARROTCarrots now come in many colors, which hold their color when cooked, so they look great on the plate as well as being tasty and nutritious. They are best seeded direct in your garden or raised bed. They require full sun, deep soil and seeds should be covered only ½ cm deep for good germi-nation. Keep soil moist until they are all up, for good success. They are best seeded in late April to late May and may be reseeded regularly until mid July. Drop in and see our seed selection!

Pepper: “Thunderbolt” Unique new 32cm long (13 inches)

And for those who want the biggest tomato try “Porterhouse”,

“Foodie” Fun in 2016 by Alfred

In recent years we have experienced a shift to edible gardening as opposed to ornamental gardening. We feel there are ways to combine the best of both worlds. Foodies looking for fresh edibles can now grow their own even if they have only limited space in which to do so. New to our line-up this year are the fol-lowing—all great for patio pot production.

THE LOWLY LOVELY SPUD

by Alfred Prins

“Grow your own & save $”Potatoes have been grown for centuries and are still one of the most common vegetables grown today. A member of the same plant family as: tomatoes, pep-pers, eggplant, tobacco, datura, petunias, goji berries and more, potato tubers contain all the nutrients re-quired in a healthy diet. They can be grown in any sun-ny garden with a well drained loam of average nutrient value. They grow equally well in raised beds, large pots or in our potato bags. They do not like shady spots, hot dry locations or heavy, soggy soil.“Netted Gems” (now known as “Russett Burbank”), “Norland”, and Warba were the only varieties available in days gone by but now there are so many better and more exciting varieties to grow. At Parkland Nurser-ies & Garden Centre we will have over 30 varieties to choose from. They come with russet, red, white, yel-low or purple skins and inside they range from white through buttery yellow to red and blue. Recently introduced is Alta Blush, developed right in Central Alberta. It has pink skin and creamy flesh. Heavy yields are harvested in mid to late summer. We have several new gourmet varieties of “spuds” to treat the palate of potato “aficionados” this summer. Potatoes can be planted as early as mid April but are best planted in early to mid May. Early maturing po-tatoes such as Warba, planted in mid April, can some-times yield “new” potatoes by late June, while pota-toes planted as late as early to mid July can yield the same tasty treats in mid September. Our potatoes at Parkland Nurseries & Garden Centre arrive in early April. Come in and check them out!

STORY BEHIND THE ROSE

Fragrance TypesEnglish Roses can be grouped into five fragrance types, although there is much interplay between them.

- Myrrh has aromatic, licorice warmth of sweet anise. Amongst roses, it is now almost exclusively confined to the English Roses, although it can be found in other plants, such as Lilac and Hawthorn. Best: Strawberry Hill.

- Fruity – the rose is related to many fruits, including apples, pears, raspberries and apricots. Best: ‘Lady of Shalot’.

- Musk – Even a small amount of the romantic musk rose scent will perfume the air. The source of the scent is frequently the stamens. Best: ‘Wedgewood’.

- Old Rose – David Austin’s favorite rose fragrance is the classic old rose, which he believes is the most alluring of all the rose fragrances. Best: ‘Gertrude Jekyll’.

- Tea Rose – often compared to opening a packet of fresh China Tea – most frequently appears in the yel-lows and apricots. Best: ‘Heathcliff’.

Gertrude Jekyll

David Austin’s English Roses are not like other roses. These roses quickly form magnificent shrubs, with the proper care which make great impact in the garden. They are reliable and easy to grow, with a vigor which contrasts with the delicate charm and beauty of their many petalled, scented blooms.

Magnificent Garden Shrubs- English roses form shapely shrubs with bushy growth

and stunning multi-petalled blooms.- Unlike old roses, the English Roses are available in

many different colours.

Wonderfully Fragrant- Renowned for their strong and diverse fragrances.- Fragrances include old rose, tea, myrrh, fruity and

musk.

Repeat-Flowering- Provide blooms over a long season.

Beautiful Fragrant Climbers- English Roses are some of the best climbing plants,

flowering down to the base.- Train against pillars, obelisks, walls, arches, pergolas,

trellises and post and rail fences.

Highly Versatile- Ideal for mixed flower beds, traditional rose borders,

fragrant hedges, large pots and containers, for cutting or landscaping.

- Perform well in partial shade.- Grow well in a wide variety of climates.

Health- Bred for vigor and superb garden

performance with outstanding disease resistance.

- Tested under rigorous conditions for eight years.

- With a little extra care & protection, these roses will do well in our area.

Sea BuckthornSea buckthorn - has attractive grayish green foliage which emerges silver in spring. It features an abundance of orange berries from fall right through the winter, which are excellent for making jams and jellies. The plant grows in most conditions and gets up to 20 feet tall by 20 feet wide and can be trained into a multi-stemmed tree. It is drought tolerant and extremely hardy!

Did you know?

by Francois Michaud

- Sea buckthorn is one of the few natural sources of the rare Omega-7 fatty acid, which has been found to aid weight loss, help prevent type 2 diabetes and improve the look and feel of skin

- It’s impact on skin health has led it to be used as an effective treatment for burns and dermatitis, as well the anti-aging power will transform your skin (Parkland Garden Centre carries “Bee By the Sea” Sea buckthorn face and body creams).

- Contains over 190 different nutrients, including the full spectrum of vitamins

- Enhances immunity, lowers cholesterol and boosts heart and vascular health

Sea Buckthorn SmoothieThey mix well with any berry smoothie recipe but I like its unique taste so instead of losing it’s flavor, I opted here to enhance it instead:

1 inch ginger

1 tablespoon maple syrup (Parkland Garden Centre car-ries Francois maple syrup)

1 banana

1 cup coconut water

What’s New In Garden Seedsby Alfred

At Parkland Garden Centre we take pride in carrying the most complete selection of garden seeds suitable for growing in our area, available in Central Alberta. While we retain the tried and reliable favorite varieties carried by many companies, we recognize the in-creasing demand for the heritage, heirloom and non-GMO varieties. To that end we will again carry a wide selection of choices for our customers.

This year, however we are delighted to be the exclusive outlet in Central Alberta for a new line of non-hybrid, non-GMO seeds grown right here in Alberta! This new company produces over 160 varieties of easy to grow Vegetables & Flower Seeds and we are proud to have them at Parkland Garden Centre!

We carry a good selection of seed tapes and we also have a full se-lection of pelletized seed, called “Sow Easy”, for seeding made easy!

If you’re looking for your old favourite stand bys, or for something “NEW” we have them all – drop in and check them out.
