United Way 2-1-1
What is 2-1-1? There is a long history of information and referral in our community. In 1974, the Suburban Women’s Club conducted a community needs assessment that identified the need to have one phone number citizens could call to find help. The community service, Ask Us, was developed to address this need and was initially housed in the basement of City Hall. Today, through the leadership of United Way of the Bluegrass and its community partners, this long tradition of information and referral continues through the national initiative, 2-1-1. This easy to remember, three digit number, provides access to health and human service and volunteer information and referral (I&R).
Benefits to Users • 2-1-1 is an easy way to find or give help in
your community.
• 24-hour/7-day a week availability; 2-1-1 is always there for you.
• One call gives you easy access to re-sources across your community. 2-1-1 is efficient, fast and easy to use.
• No more wrong numbers; no more wasted time trying to find the right resource(s).
• 2-1-1 is a confidential call.
Examples of I & R provided by 2-1-1 • Resources for basic human needs • Resources for physical and mental
health • Support for employment • Support for elderly and disabled • Support for children and families • Volunteer opportunities and donations

2-1-1 is a Community Resource
Benefits as a Crisis Tool 2-1-1 is a critical information system during and after a community crisis such as an attack, flood, ice
storm, fire, or other local or national tragedy. Prior to a community crisis, it is critical that an information system be in place that will respond to the crisis in a moment’s notice.
2-1-1 responds immediately during times of crisis to field calls regarding the crisis and to direct callers to services most appropriate for their needs.
2-1-1 maintains a permanent presence in the community. As a result, people can find the help they need whether their needs arise a week or several years after the crisis event.
Community Benefits 2-1-1 touches the lives of every person in the community. Whether you are in a situation where you
need help or are able to give help, 2-1-1 is always there for you.
2-1-1 strengthens the community by uniting the people in your area who want to help with those who need help.
2-1-1 maintains the integrity of the 9-1-1 system, saving that vital community resource for life-and-death emergencies.
There are more than one million nonprofit organizations in the United States. People have trouble navigating a complicated web of health and human services providers. Likewise, people who want to help often do not know where to begin.
2-1-1 is a useful planning tool. Based on aggregate data about the types of calls that the 2-1-1 center receives, communities are in a better position to anticipate demand for services and mobilize resources to meet changing needs.
