It has certainly been a challenging year for us all. Thankfully, however, due to the hard work of so many industry bodies, the breeding season was successfully completed and flat racing, having been suspended initially, resumed behind closed doors. Prior to the pandemic, the Cheltenham Festival proved to be a tremendously special occasion for the Thompson family, where the red, white and blue colours of Cheveley Park Stud were carried to Grade 1 success by Ferny Hollow in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper and of course by the superstar Envoi Allen, in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. The smile on Patricia Thompson’s face as she led in Envoi Allen said it all.

Cheveley Park Stud has had a solid year on the flat, with 45% winners to runners. Regal Reality put his best foot forward to win the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury. Last year’s Group 1 Falmouth Stakes winner Veracious, got her season off to a great start when winning the Dick Hern Stakes before finishing fifth in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Vivionn was bridesmaid in Stakes company when finishing second in the Group 2 Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes at Doncaster and third in the Group 3 Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock Park. Cabaletta won the Listed Aphrodite Stakes, before finishing second in both the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes and the Group 3 March Stakes at Goodwood. Sacred gave us a great thrill when second at Royal Ascot in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes and followed this up by being runner up in both the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York and the Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster.

The stallions at Cheveley Park Stud have had another excellent year. TWILIGHT SON had his first runners, producing 17 individual winners and two Stakes horses to date, including the Group 3 and Listed winner and Group 2 placed Aria Importante. TWILIGHT SON improved with age himself and we feel we can look forward to seeing his progeny achieving even greater things in 2021.

MAYSON remains a remarkably consistent, commercial sire, who continues to punch well above his weight, having this year sired Oxted, winner of the Group 1 Darley July Cup Stakes at Newmarket.

ULYSSES, a dual Group 1 winner by Galileo, had his first yearlings presented at the sales this autumn, where they were extremely well received, making up to 320,000 guineas. We look forward to seeing them on the racecourse next year.

The “Mighty” PIVOTAL has had another stellar year at the highest level, with multiple international Group 1 winner Addeybb winning the Group 1 QIPCO Champion Stakes and Glen Shiel and Brando being first and second in the Group 1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint at Ascot.

DUTCH ART continues to enjoy his partial retirement and what a year he has had with the Group 3 winners Brad The Brief and Bowerman, and the Stakes winners Starman and the Cheveley Park Stud bred Exceptional flying the flag for him.

The Group 1 Prix Morny winner UNFORTUNATELY proved popular at Springfield House Stud this spring and we are most encouraged by his first foals who, like him, look sharp early types.

Thank you for your support in these trying and challenging times. Stay safe and we will be in touch to discuss your mating plans for 2021.

Chris Richardson – Managing Director
