Decision Support Systems to assist engineering design

WHAT IS A DSS?
DSS: Decision Support Systems
A Decision Support System (DSS) is a computer-based
information system that supports decision-making
activities.
DSSs serve the management, operations, and planning
levels of an operation and help people make decisions
about problems that may be rapidly changing and not
easily specified in advance.
Examples:
• Risk prevention and emergency management in floods.
• Monitoring and management of marine dumping.
• Structural evaluation of buildings.
• Services network design in residential areas.
• Municipal energetic management.
Decision Making
In general, we can say that a DSS is a computersystem used to provide support, rather thanautomate the process of decision making
DSS Concept
Supporting a decision means helping people workingalone or in groups to gather intelligence, generatealternatives and make decisions.
"An information system based on an interactive computer, flexible and adaptable, specially developed to support thesolution of a management problem not structured to improvedecision-making. It uses data, provides a friendly interface andallows decision-making in the own analysis of the situation "
DSS Concept
DSS Characteristics
Dynamic, flexible and interactive reports,
so that the user does not adhere to the predefined lists that were set at the time of implantation, and do not always respond to their real questions.
The database management system stores information fromvarious sources, may come from data repositories of atraditional organization, from external sources (like theInternet), or staff (of ideas and experiences of individualusers).
DSS Characteristics
Data integration involves combining data residingin different sources and providing users with aunified view of these data. This process is veryimportant in the development of DSS.
DSS Characteristics
Fast response time. The underlying database isusually a huge data. Such databases are optimizedfor analyzing large volumes of information.
DSS Characteristics
No technical knowledge required. A non-technical usercan create new charts and reports and navigate betweenthem by drag & drop or drill through. Therefore to examinethe information available or create new metrics is notimperative to seek help in the computer sciencedepartment.
DSS Characteristics
Each user has adequate information to theirprofile. It is not that everyone has access to all theinformation, but you have access to the informationyou need to make your work as efficient as possible.
DSS Characteristics
The development of a DSS should use a very iterative approach. Thiswill allow the application to be changed and redesigned at variousintervals. The initial problem is used to design the system and then itis tested and reviewed to ensure that the desired result is achieved.
• DSSs are introduced after having implemented the transactional systems.
• The information generated provides support for middle managementand senior management in decision-making.
• Systems are often interactive and user-friendly information with highstandards of graphic and visual design, are directed to the end user
DSS Development
DSS specific
Actual application that will be used by the user. This isthe part of the application that allows makingdecisions in a particular problem. The user can act onthis particular problem.
Types of DSS
DSS generator
This level contains hardware and softwareenvironment that allows people to easily developspecific DSS applications. This level makes use ofCASE tools. It also includes special programminglanguages, function libraries and linked modules.
Types of DSS
Historical DSS
In these systems it is on the agenda comparecurrent data with information from other historicalperiods of the company, in order to analyze trends, setting the evolution of business parameters ... etc.

DSS TECHNOLOGIES
DSS: Decision Support Systems
Decision Support Systems can be either fullycomputerized, human-powered or a combination ofboth and often include the integration of softwaretechnologies such as Sensor Networks, GIS, DataMining, Numerical Analysis and Artificial Intelligence.
Sensor Networks
Sensors work with each other tosense some physical phenomenonand then the information gathered isprocessed to get relevant results.
• Wireless Sensor Networks arenetworks that consists of sensorswhich are distributed in an ad hocmanner.
• Wireless sensor networks consists ofprotocols and algorithms with self-organizing capabilities.

Numerical Analysis
Artificial Intelligence is the part of science
that deals with the design of systems of
intelligent computing, ie, systems that exhibit
the characteristics we associate with
intelligence in human behavior that refers to
language comprehension, learning,
reasoning, problem solving, among others.
Artificial Intelligence is a science that tries to
create programs for machines that mimic
human behavior and understanding.
Artificial Inteligence
• Neuronal Networks
• Smart Agents
• Data Mining
• Machine Learning
OLAP tools enable users to analyze multidimensional datainteractively from multiple perspectives. OLAP consists of threebasic analytical operations: consolidation (roll-up), drill-down,and slicing and dicing. Consolidation involves the aggregation ofdata that can be accumulated and computed in one or moredimensions.

Weather Stations and buoy system combined with GIS technology (Geographic Information System) for application to control and real time monitoring of geographical, meteorological, environmental, healthcare and tourism data, with particular attention to the dissemination of environmental alerts (eg. jellyfish , discharges, temporary, ..).
Maritime DSS platforms with AIS technology : AIDMAR y MaTCO
Monitoring and control maritime vessels: system alerts and reports against ILLEGAL, SPILL, bank MEDUSAS and
