1. SUJ.lMARY

During the first 10 days of this period this battalion remained in Bivouac about 5 miles north of Hongchon, conducting training exercises, and motorized security patrols throughout the Regimental Sector of res~onsibilit7. One officer and 65 enlisted marines were rotated to the United States and 3 officers and 94 enlisted were joined from the 12th replacement draft on September 5th and 6th. On 11 September the be.ttalion moved to a regimental aasembl7 area to the north and during the night of 12-13 September relieved the :hird Battalion, Seventh ~!arines north of the Hays line. Intermediate objectives on the a~proaches to Regimental objective BOGER >:ere attacked and seized on 13 and 14 September. The attack was ordered held up at these points, and on 16 September the Second and Third Bat~alions, Fifth !c!arinea plus one comnany of Korean Marines relieved the units of this battalion on ~osition. Returning to an assembly area the battalion less one company which was attached to the Second Battalion reverted to Division reserve until the night of 19 September. On 20 September, the battalion moved back into the lines to relieve two regiments and two battalions of the Eighth ROK Division. The following day "H" Company attacked and seized the remainder of tho enemy held ground along the proposed regimental defense line. For the remainder of the period, the battalion organized defenses and fortified positions Plong this line 1 ooncluctod limited reconnaisance patrolst and directod supporting ueaponn fire on enemy targets to the front.

Division rental Clinic. The assicned petrel de~arted at 0800K and returned at

At OSOOI a. telephone message was received from Regimental S-3 warning that the Battalion would move on 11 September to an assembly area, prepared for employment in the Division Zone of action. At lOOOI an advance element of the :Battalion departed for the assembly area to make preparations for the move. The entire Battalion had closed the assembly area in DT 3139 by 12301 anr, the C? opened in DT 313963. Local sec\trity was established, and ac the day closed the Battalion remained in tho assembly area awaiting further orders.

Extreoely heavy friernly artillery fire was placed around the :position, including 1259 rounds fired during n single one hour period for the company. "G" company received a light :;:>robing attack at o441I which wao quickly repulsed by e.rtillery fire. At 06151 "G" compaey observed an estimated 50 enemy troo:os in the open on a ridge in DT 2544IllSX.

ded one marine with a hand grenade before being killed. At 02301 "G" compan7

had a short fire fight as an~ number of enem7 attempted to infiltrate

their lines. Enemy casualties from the previous two days activities totalled

159 counted KIA, 150 estimated KU, 225 estimated nA and 29 prisonors. Pris

ners stated that there had been 500 enemy troops on the hill, adding that it

was the heaviest concentration of YK troops th57 had seen in one sector for

many months. Their defenses were heavily :fortified and amply su~?lied with

ammunition, During the day the battalion lines were consolidated and ~efen

Nearly all of the prisoners taken by this battalion durine the past few days

a few bunkers on the lower approached to Hill 302, and many bunkers near the

top of Rill S02. Hissions fired on that general area by mcrtars ana. artillery

caused an unknown number of eztomy casual ties. An air strike of four planes was

directed Against the area at about 16001, resulting in at least 3 enemy counted

Accomplished assigned patrol this date as ordered, None of the civilians questioned on the patrol route reported enemy act! vi ty.. The _:f'1elds under cultivation apprea.red w•ll cared for. The gold mine at the patrol objective did not appear to be in operation. There were evidence~ nf use of some of its buildings for l1voua.cs by troops some time ago. There were no reports of sickness in the area, There were fresh jeep tracks on the road from the MBR all the way to the patrol objective.

Squad size motorized patrol departed 3rd Bn, area at 0800K thi a de.te, travelled no~th on the MBR to DS 1390M, then east a.long the Hougchon-Gang to DB 1590V. This route did not appear to be passable to 2t ton trucks, eo patrol returned to MSR and continued north to DS l492H, At this point they again turned east and proceeded to DS l893N, This route was not passable te 2! ton trucks beyond this point, so patrol debarded and continued on foot, Due to insufficient time for extensive foot patrol this date, the patrol turned back at 1130K at a.pproaimately DS 2191H and returned to base. No enemy or unusual civilian activity was observed within the area covered, Patrol returned to base at approximately 1250K.

A reinforced squad size patrol from George Company departed in 1 2l ton truck at 0700k via route indicated in battalion Frag Order 071900K, At Chang-mal, DS 2581, the projected route was found to be impassable to the truck, Also in this vicinity communication via radio with the base was lost, and since the radio jeep was a hindrance in stream crossing, it was returned to base. The patrol continued on a new route as indicated on the attached overlay. Road
