L.C. Greenwood was born in Canton, Mississippi on September 8, 1946. Mr. Greenwood graduated from Arkansas AM&N, where he was named the 1968 Ebony All-American defensive lineman in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Steelers drafted Mr. Greenwood in 1969 in the 10th round. His first two years as a Steeler saw him play as a fifth defensive lineman. By 1971, he had worked his way to being the regular defensive

left end and a crucial member of the Steelers’ famed “Steel Curtain.”

Mr. Greenwood played for the Steelers his entire career, retiring in 1981. He is a four time Super Bowl Champion, as well as being named an All-Pro in 1974 and 1975 and All-AFC five times, appearing in six Pro Bowls in a seven-year stretch from 1973-1979. Mr. Greenwood has also been named to the Super Bowl Silver Anniversary Team and the Steelers All-Time Team.

Mr. Greenwood still resides in Pittsburgh today; he is the owner of Greenwood Enterprises, a coal and gas company he started in 1978.

Healthy Start, Inc. Pittsburgh/Allegheny CountyThe Pittsburgh/Allegheny County Healthy Start program is designed as an intensive community-based effort to eliminate perinatal health disparities. Since beginning operation in 1991, Healthy Start continues to address the significant disparities that exist with regard to infant mortality, incidence of low weight births, preterm delivery, access to early prenatal care and the need for

on-going community involvement. Despite the progress made over the last 20 years in addressing perinatal health, women residing in the target areas continue to encounter numerous logistical and psychosocial barriers to prenatal care: high poverty, high rates of inadequate health insurance, and health care provider shortages, as well as health and human services systems that are inadequate to the myriad needs of the poor and low-income.

Page 11: 1st Annual Tee Up for Babies Booklet

Healthy Start, Inc. Fayette/Westmoreland CountiesIn 1999 Healthy Start, Inc. expanded into rural Fayette County with the award of federal dollars. And since 2000 Healthy Start, Inc. has served more than 25,000 women and children. The Fayette County project is located in the county seat of Uniontown, PA. In 2000, the project aimed to reduce rates of infant death and low weight births by improving access to medical care in the rural county designated as a medically underserved area. The project utilizes outreach workers, nurses and social workers to provide case management, health education, medical assessments and counseling along with depression screening and referral to meet the needs of families. As a result, rates of

positive birth and other health outcomes have improved. In fact, 9 out of 10 children born to women receiving Healthy Start services

are full term, at a normal weight and have no birth defects. To expand the successes of the project, in 2009 the

project expanded in and now services a portion of Westmoreland County where similar

needs of families are present. While infant mortality is still a significant problem adversely

affecting Southwestern PA communities, Healthy Start, Inc.

and the federal initiative focus on the elimination of health disparities

afflicting women, fathers and children. This includes lack of adequate health care,

uneven rates of chronic disease, and exposure to environmental hazards to name a few.
