    Midtest Teaching and Learning Strategies

    1. think back to the time when you were at senior high school. Describe the taeching and

    learning of English at the time, what was the method(s) used? Describe the application of

    the 12 teaching principles in the teaching and learning of English at the time?!

    I was gradueted from SMA N 1 Curup. I want to describe my language (English) teaching

    and learning when I was in first year in senior high school. My school is SBM (SekolahBerbasis Mandiri), in every subjects we had 2 teachers who taught us. At th time, in

    English class, my teachers taught with interesting method. We were free to express our

    speaking skill in the classroom. My teachers forced us to speak English every meeting and

    made us become confident with our English. Since not all of us can speak English very

    well and some of us not really had good skill in English so they made atmosphere in the

    class like informal situation, we might use English and mixed it with Bahasa Indonesia

    and they also mixed the languages, so it made us absorb the lesson faster . In tecahing

    learning activities speaking skill more used than the other skills. When we spoke English

    was not really as a big problem about our grammar, because the important thing is we

    must speak English but, my teacher direct us what the right form must used. And then, we

    also free to arranged our materials, my teacher only gave us the outline of the materials

    and we understood the materials by ownself with our own way (actually they also guide us

    to do the excercise). Sometimes we used group working or pair working and sometimes

    we used individual skill. For example, when we studied about procedure text, my teacher

    only gave us the line of the material and we must practice that, usually we divided into

    some groups, and then every group must discussed about the material until everyone

    understand it, and we presented our case in front of the class, sometimes when the

    materials needed a practice so we must practice it in front of the class with our ownway,

    for example like become a presenter TV, or short conversation, and at the end of the

    meeting, my teachers gave us more explanation about the materials and make it clearly.

    For the writting skill we focused on grammatical, we wrote some sentences based on the

    form, like tenses or conditional tense. In reading skill we focused on find the new words

    and how to translate the text.

    Based on description above, I think, the method(s) used were the grammar translation

    method and the direct method, as we know that grammatical trasnlation method describe

    about : classes are taught in the mother tongue, with little active use of thr target language,

    grammar provides the rules for putting words together, and instruction often focuses on

    the form and inflection of words, and little attention is paid to the content of texts, which

    are treated as excercises in grammatical analisys. And about direct method, tell us : oral

    communication skills were built up in carefully traded progression organized around

    question-and-answer exchages between tecahers and students in small, intensive class,

    new teaching points were taught through modeling and practice, both speech and listening

    comprehension were taught.

    The aplication of 12 princilples when I was in first grade were autonomy and willingness

    to communicate, because autonomy tell about gain confidence and be able to experiment

    with language, it means that, with every meeting we speak English automatically our

    confidence growh up. Pair and work activity, it make us become cooperative with the

    other, and then we become creative with our ownself by doing the task. Actually

    aotonomy and willingness to communicate have similar implementation, they force the

    learners become creative and brave to take a risk on teaching learning activities, like speak

    English in classroom at the English class whatever about the grammar and the correct

    answers, the important thing that students must speak English.

    2. in your opinion, what is an effective language teacher? Describe tha factors which can

    prevent a teacher from being a good language teacher and how to solve those problems.

    The effective teacher is teacher who master what or how the language which will be given

    to learners is, not only that, language teacher also must love and interesting to the

    language. Beside that he/she also must understand about learners condition, because not

    all of learners can absorb the materials by once explanation and they also have different

    ability to get the materials (as we know English is foreign language in Indonesia).

    Language teacher must have tricks to make the learners interested to the materials and

    make them able to received the material very well, teacher also can manage the classroom

    and create the atmosphere of the class suitable with the instructional goals. And then theteacher also must be able to make the learners use the language (speak) at least at the

    teaching learning activity. And the important thing that, language teacher must understand

    that English in Indonesia as a foreign language and learners do not use English in their

    daily activitiy, they only learn english because English is one of subjects in the school not

    as a necessary things.

    Factors which prevent the teacher become a good langage teacher.

    Factors internal:

    Teacher self.1. Less confident : sometimes, teachers think that they do not have enough confident to

    teach about language especially English.

    2. Less dedication to the job : as a teacher you are the educator that has responsibelity toyour leaners and yourself. You are also the expectation of society on build up the

    great future in the world, but sometimes teachers think that teaching is a job not as a

    duty.

    Factors eksternal :

    1. Facilities of the school, not all of the schools have same facilties, for exmple, schoolin the city and in the country, it have different facilities, like no language laboratoryat the school in country.

    2. Learneres conditions, everyone have different necessity and different ability, it meansthat not all learners can follow your class veru well

    3. Mother tongue, as we know, English is a foreign language for us, we have mothertongue that is our traditional language, and our Nation language is Bahasa Indonesia,

    indirectly we must learn 2 languages to masters bahasa Indonesia first, and then the

    next one is English, So thats why so difficult for us to undrestand or speak English

    like native speakers.

    4. Curriculum, in Indonesia curriculum design by ministry so as a teacher you onlyarranged the material in order the material can receive by your students. But

    sometimes curriculum is not suitable with condition of the learners and the school.

    5. Learners awareness, english is not our second language and some learners think thatEnglish just a formaly and they do not use English in daily activity, so they not really

    want to learn more about English

    6. Learners enviorenment, as a teacher (also language teacher) not only placed in thecity, but also in the country, it means that you have different situations, when you

    teach in the city it so easy to you to teach yuor students because they have awareness

    to learn language although the language is not use in daily, but if you teach in country

    is so hard to you to teach the language to your students, because in their opinion

    english is not important for them, english is useless because there is no situation to

    speak english.

    Problem solves

    1. Teacher selfLess confident and less dedication, as a teacher you are the guide of your learners to

    get the future, so there is no reason for you to do not do the best for your students and

    yourself, you must kill your unconfident by doing something great, before you be a

    teacher you have so many learning and training, so build up your confidence with

    your experience.

    2. School facilities, when in your school has problem with teaching learning activitiesbecause the facilities are not available you must be creative teacher, you create your

    own media (easy media) to deliver your material to your learner, like picture, etc

    3. Learner condition, as a teacher you must know chacracteristic of your leaner, and youmust position yourself as comfort a possible you can around your learners

    4. Curriculum, this situation forced you become a creative and innovative teacher,sometimes the material so hard to absorb by the learner, so that you must create and

    arranged the material become interesting case and the learneres can get the point of

    your material.

    5. Mother tongue, is so hard to us to remove or ignore this case, because as indonesianEnglish as a foreign language, alhtough we cant speak like native speakers but we

    may can speak as well as we can, and you can train your English On daily activity,

    everyday you speak English it can makes your English better than before.

    6. Learners awareness and learners enviorenment have similar problem, in this cases as ateacher you need to give the explanation to your learners, how important English in

    the world today. You can share about any ideas to build up the awarness of your

    learners, you change their mind with some picture or story about English, and make

    them love English

    3. find one example of group work activity for language learning. Describe the procedures of

    how to do the activity; describe the strength and weaknesses of that activity for language

    teaching and learning.

    I think discussion like presentation the material is a good gorup work activity for language

    learning. For more effective work, its good if in one group have 4-5 members, it make all

    of the members become active and master the material, and then we also make the rules

    for the groups. For example, we give the material to them, (is better if we give different

    materials to them) the material maybe 1 chapter or one case. And then we ask them to find

    the cases on the chapter and solves the problems based on their opinion, after that we ask

    them to make a presentation about the cases in front of the class in order the other groups

    also follow the discussion. In presentation we make rules for them, like every groups must

    have 1 moderator, 1 or 2 presenter, and 1 or 2 people to answer the questions, and every

    group msut have at least 2 questions to give to the presenter. So that, All members of the

    group become active.

    The strength of this method

    1. Learners become active in teaching and learning activity2.

    Teacher can evaluate and give assessment on learners activty

    3. Give chance to learners to use their ability on solving the problem and discussionabout one case.

    4. Learners become cooperative each other5. Learners use they own opinion to discuss somethingThe weaknesses

    1. Sometimes only learners that have high confident which active in discussion2. Success or not this strategy depend on the learners
