Music All Night Long L ve Bands

GORDON WEBSTER FEAT. STEVEN MITCHELL (USA)

Pianist Gordon Webster’s tremendous musician-ship and passion have inspired Lindy Hoppers at hundreds of dance events worldwide. Drawing on influences as diverse as Fats Waller, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson and Gene Harris, Webster serves up a smorgasbord of styles unified by one charac-teristic: irresistible danceability. The combined en-ergy of Gordon and his featured guest singer Ste-ven Mitchell will create an exuberant atmosphere.

NP Big Band (Italy)

With their powerful sound, this 17-piece big band plays the great music of the famous Swing orches-tras of the 30s and 40s. Original arrangements as well as rarities from Artie Shaw, Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and many others enthuse dancers and music fans alike.

Gentlemen & gangsters (Sweden)

Gentlemen & Gangsters play hot jazz with all the flair and sophistication of true gentlemen, coupled with the ruthless brutality of hardened gangsters. Like a devious conspiracy from a bygone era, this shady syndicate of jazz kingpins plot for world domination, spreading infectious jazz music.

Ray Collins’ Hot-Club (Germany)

With a huge number of original songs like “Bare-foot” or “Bye Bye Paris” Ray Collins’ Hot-Club gets everyone to stomp their feet and clap their hands to their rocking beats. For many years they are the number one band to represent the authentic feel of the 40’s and 50’s Jump Blues, Swing, Jive and Rock’n’Roll. Hot, hotter, Ray Collins’ Hot-Club!

Si Cranstoun (England)

Si Cranstoun has been honing his vocal talent for many years. He has created a series of un-believably catchy songs which really emphasise Si Cranstoun’s foot tapping expertise as well as most importantly a voice that literally stops you in your tracks. Si’s distinctive northern soul voice has seen him compared with legends such as Sam Cooke winning a huge number of fans and a ma-jor record label deal with Warner Music.

Jackson Sloan & the Rhythmtones (England)

The 8-piece band captures the vintage groove like back in the heydays of Fats Domino, Little Richard, or Ruth Brown. With 3 saxophones in the horn section and an incredible gifted singer the band brings back 1950s Rhythm’n’Blues, Jump Blues and 50s style New Orleans R&B.

Ray Collins’ Hot-Club

“Shake The Lake” Boogie Woogie Session (Austria/Germany)

Richie Loidl and Clemens Vogler, two fa-mous Boogie Woogie pianists and the orga-nizers of the Shake The Lake Festival, team up with Albert Koch on the howling har-monica, Franz Trattner on drums and James Hornsby on bass to create this outstanding Boogie Woogie session.

Laney & the snappy Rhythm gang (Germany)

The lovely singer Laney and her cheery gang of magnificent jazz musicians journey through the golden Swing era’s 30s and 40s and impress with their variety of sound and inspiration in interpreting the classics.

FUnTasten (Germany)

With a hot mixture of Boogie Woogie, Blues, Rock’n’Roll and acrobatics this remarkable duo ensures fun and exceptional energy whenever they perform on their pianos.

The Nine Pennies (Italy)

The Nine Pennies bring back the sound of the era of the greatest dance orchestras and revive such stars like Beiderbecke, Whiteman, Tum-bauer. A great group for a great music!

Rockin’ Midgets (Germany)

Cool sounds, hot rhythms, sweeping vocals, great performance and an amazing music col-lection of rousing music from the 50s to the 60s is their recipe for success.

Swing Lyons (Germany)

With virtuoso Gipsy sounds in the style of Django Reinhardt, this Franco-German band transports the audience straight back into the atmosphere of a Swing era night club.

Souvenirs (Germany)

What would Rock That Swing be without the Souvenirs? This extremely popular small band presents Swing and Jazz in a fun and humor-ous way, bringing Louis Armstrong and Marilyn Monroe back to life.

and Rock’n’Roll era at Rock That Swing. As in the Savoy Ballroom the competitors will strive to impress the audience aiming for the loudest cheers in order to win the battle for the greatest honors and best prizes.

Indiegogo Crowd Funding Meet T e Legends

rockthatswing.com/Meet-The-Legends

Unfortunately we can’t afford to bring in more than two legends for financial reasons, as the costs for RTSF have gone through the roof and we already struggle to keep this big event going.

Therefore we decided to start a crowd funding campaign to bring more of the original danc-ers and legends to Munich. How many of these great people will come to Munich is up to you. If each of the about 2,000 participants of the Rock that Swing Festival sponsors only 10 Euros, we’ll be able to invite all of the above-mentioned legends. The money will be used exclusively for bringing in the legends. The more money is allocated, the more legends we can invite.

There are many sponsorship options, starting from 10 Euros (for which you will get a signed digital group picture of the legends) to up to 2,500 Euro for a Super Sponsorship (for which you get to choose a legend, sit at the honory table together with all the legends and receive a back stage pass for the evenings at the Deutsches Theater, have a personal photo shooting and much more). We created a few very valuable packages. If you can’t join the festival, we can still offer you great tailor-made sponsoring packages.

Go to rockthatswing.com/meet-the-legends to get more information and join the good cause. The crowd funding site will be live until the beginning of January. We hope many of you will support this project and make a dream come true.

So spread the word and meet the legends in Munich (#MeetTheLegends).

Marcus & Bärbl

During the last years we’ve had the fortune and pleasure to get to know and work with many of the greatest and most inspiring Swing dancers of the 30s to the 50s. The creativity of these people forms the basis for what we all love: Swing dancing. They have influenced generations of Swing dancers to this day and have made today’s Swing scene possible in the first place. All of the contemporary top dancers and teachers have watched their movies or developed their skills thanks to the knowledge they passed on. They touched the lives of countless dancers.

Sadly we have lost many of these amazing people in recent years. It is only a matter of a few years until all of them will have left us. Therefore it is our aim for this Rock That Swing Festival to invite as many of the original dancers and legends as possible to Munich. We want to cherish what they have done for the dance scene and give more dancers the chance to meet their idols —as long as it is still possible—and experience the dance and the history first hand.

The legends Norma Miller and Steven Mitchell have already confirmed their participation for the 10th anniversary of RTSF. We also contacted legends like Jean Veloz (“Swing Fever”, “Groovy Movie”), Chazz Young (son of Frankie Manning, “Cotton Club”), Ray Hirsch (“Blondie Meets The Boss“, „Mad Youth“), Sugar Sullivan (“Spirit Moves”, “Sonny Allen and The Rock-ets”), and Barbara Billups (“Sonny Allen and The Rockets”, “Harvest Moonball Winner”). They would all love to join the Rock That Swing Festival and share their passion with all of you.

With her amazing dancing in the breathtak-ing routine from the movie “Hellzapoppin’”, Norma Miller became a living legend and role model for the entire Swing dance communi-ty. Although she was actually too young to enter the Savoy Ballroom, she participated in the contests and won over fa-mous Whitey, who managed the best Lindy Hoppers of the Savoy Ballroom. Her pres-ence, rhythmical playful-ness and comical style won her the prestigious spot on

Whitey’s team, even though she was still too young to enter the Savoy. After a lifetime in show business as a dancer, singer and come-dian (e.g. Bill Cosby Show, Las Vegas), Norma Miller has enriched our lives with several bi-

ographies. With her recounts of the Swing era she continues to touch the

hearts of modern Swing danc-ers. At the Rock That Swing

Festival you will have the opportunity to meet her in person and hear her sto-ries first hand.

Steven Mitchell started his dance career by studying Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Ballroom and Hip Hop in both Los Angeles and New York. Steven is not only a truly outstanding dancer and choreographer, but also an out-standing singer and songwriter. He started Lindy Hoppin’ around 1978 together with his partner Erin Stevens. They worked with Al Minns in New York 1982 and brought Frankie Manning out of retirement in 1986 by work-ing together with him. Steven has helped tremendously to bring back Lindy Hop to the

forefront of social dancing. He has taught all over the world for the past 25 years, inspir-ing a whole generation of Lindy Hoppers with his incredible versatility, energy and style. Among his many other credits, Steven has appeared on National TV dancing at the White House for Bill and Hillary Clinton. Ste-ven’s first teaching event in Munich was in 1992, which was also Frankie Manning’s first year in Munich. We are glad to welcome him back as a special guest and singer for the 10th anniversary of Rock That Swing.
