Theory of Operation
Electro-Optical Fire Detectors sense the radiated
Electromagnetic Fire energy in the Ultraviolet and Infrared
wavelengths.

Advantages of Electro-Optical Fire Detectors: Fast - detects Electromagnetic Radiant Energy
from the fire(Moves at the Speed of Light 300,000 km/sec)
Fast - detects fire in the early stages
Area Coverage, not a point detector. Does not have to be located directly at the fire event

Conventional IR3 Detectors
Competitions: Narrow Band 4.3 micron Pyroelectric IR sensors, combined with 2 guard
bands (3.8 & 5.1)
Disadvantages:• Respond to clean-burning hydrocarbon fires only
• Totally blinded by water on the lens, fog, rain, smoke
• Max. operating temperatures: 75ºC
• Respond only to hot, carbon-based fires
• Respond best to change in incident radiant energy
• Respond best to mechanically shuttered fires
• Do not respond to slow growing fires
Advantage:• Easy to design and manufacture
![Page 13: 1HONEYWELL - CONFIDENTIAL 1 An Introduction to FIRE SENTRY C 0 R P O R A T I O N Electro-Optical Fire Detection](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022052603/56649db05503460f94a9e546/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
13 HONEYWELL - CONFIDENTIAL 13
FS24X WideBand IR3 Detector
FSX Technology: WideBand IR, WideBand 4.3 micron & Quantum sensors
Advantages:• Respond to hydrocarbon & non-hydrocarbon fires
• Not blinded by water on the lens, fog, rain, smoke
• Higher operating temperatures: 85ºC (standard) & 110ºC (extended)
• Quantum sensors respond to black body radiation and growing fires
• Can detect pure and hot flames’ sooty and dirty fires as well as cooler carbon dioxide fires (Isopropyl alcohol)
Disadvantage:• Extremely difficult to design
